There was nothing to recommend a great friendship between Merritt Lewis and Sirius Black. There was also nothing to recommend that Sirius Black and Merritt Lewis be mortal enemies. In truth, there was very little about either character that seemed at all out of the ordinary way of aquaintances. Which is, of course, why it came as such a great surprise when they fell in love.
