The story begins with Voldemort deciding to simply cast aside Lily, rather than killing her. Without his mother's protective charm, baby Harry dies. Lily now has to pick up the pieces after losing her husband and child. Dumbledore, for his own purposes, offers Lily a job at Hogwarts, and it is there that she meets an old acquaintance.
