The Malfoys were once a rich family, but a wizard thief by the name of Matthew Longbottom, had stolen their family fortune from Gringotts, (full details inside Chapter 2) Matthew disguised himself as Jacob Jelicks, (Jacobs vault is next to the Malfoys)
and angrying a few dragons to scare off the goblins. A few dragons could send any amount of midgety wart-faced goblins running. Matthew then used a spell and sent all the treasure out the vault and down the nearest cliff.
