McCartney Luck is thrilled to be a seventh year which means nonstop parties and minimal studying. Lily Potter is harboring a Scorpius Malfoy-sized secret. Maxima Brankovitch wishes to continue her reign of terror as Queen Bee of Hogwarts.
So when a Beauxbatons student starts dismantling everything they have built, it brings about a call to arms. And no one is going to make it out unscathed.
"You know I'm old in some ways-in others-well, I'm just a little girl. I like sunshine and pretty things and cheerfulness-and I dread responsibility."
-F. Scott Fitzgerald, This Side of Paradise
“I didn’t forget,” I said dryly. “I didn’t tell her, because I knew that she would bring a negative aura.” I motioned around me as I tried to explain an aura, but I probably just looked like I was swimming or swatting flies or something equally awkward.
“You’re not a hippie, dear, normal people don’t have an “aura.” My mother sighed...
"When one is in love, one always begins by deceiving one's self, and one always ends by deceiving others. This is what the world calls a romance."
-Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
“You’re just in denial because you don’t want anyone else touching your boyfriend,” I teased.
“You’re just mad because I’ve never gone for you,” Troy shot me a smirk that mirrored my own.
“Whatever helps you sleep at night Clearwater,” I threw my hair off my shoulder in fake nonchalance.
"Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go."
-Oscar Wilde, The Duchess of Padua
“I’ve always wanted to come to Hogwarts since I’ve heard such wonderful things…”
Gag me with a spoon. Gouge out my eyes with rusty scissors. Let a Bludger smack me in the head. Just make it end for the sake of my sanity! I unceremoniously banged my head on the table and moaned pitifully.
“Alright, it’s official. I really am swan-diving off the Astronomy Tower.”
“Dude, Mick you didn’t tell me your sister was that hot!"
"Just be patient. Let the game come to you. Don't rush. Be quick, but don't hurry."
I didn’t listen at all to Teddy’s inspirational/motivational locker-room speech and didn’t listen when Coach Jarvis Appleby (the Flight Instructor/Quidditch Referee) did the whole captains thing. The only time I listened was when they blew the whistle to start the game...
"Louis Weasley’s got the Quaffle and he’s streaking toward the goals!”
"There is nothing like puking with somebody to make you into old friends."
-Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar
“Don’t you dare say it.” I guzzled down a gulp. “I told you, no.”
“But it sounded like one of those where you actually want me to talk you out of saying no and basically force you to do it, so then reach further enlightenment and happiness like that wonky Buddha dude you told me about.”
I gave him an exasperated look, but Troy was right unfortunately. I really wanted him to talk me into it.
"Man is not what he thinks he is, he is what he hides."
“Alright, who’s going to offer to play Seeker for me?” Wood asked. “Roxanne?” Fred looked like he didn’t like that idea any more than Roxanne did.
“Wood, you know I’m a Chaser, not a Seeker. I won’t last against Aleksander Krum, he’s a beast. A scary, Bulgarian beast. He’s like…”
“The Terminator of Seeking. The Goliath of Seeking. The Big Brother of Seeking. The Pennywise the clown of Seeking.”
“Thank you, McCartney, for those motivational allusions.”
“With a secret like that, at some point the secret itself becomes irrelevant. The fact that you kept it does not.”
― Sara Gruen, Water for Elephants
I blushed, but smiled back before looking away. We played that game all night. He’d look at me and we’d exchange smiles before looking away. Then I’d look at him and we’d exchange smiles before looking away again. It was like a game of tag that we were both losing.
"Why can't people have what they want? The things were all there to content everybody; yet everybody has the wrong thing."
-Ford Made Ford, The Good Soldier
I felt numb as I tapped James on the shoulder. He turned and looked up. “Hey buddy,” I began. “What are you doing?” I asked. Humor was always my default reaction to anything painful.
James’ eyes widened. “McCartney?” He looked back at the other girl. “But I thought you were—! What in Merlin’s name?” He ruffled his hair in nervousness and rubbed his eyes.
"No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true."
-Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter
“What are you two doing?” Teddy stood in front of us with his hands on his hips. We remained silent, looking at the floor. “Take off your masks.”
Scorpius immediately took off his mask while I weighed my options. The only problem was there were no options. I was too young to Apparate and if I tried to run past Teddy he’d stop me. I didn’t have my wand either.
“Giving someone the benefit of the doubt is not so simple as it sounds. What it means, in fact, is being charitable--which, as the vicar is fond of pointing out, is the most difficult of the graces to master. Faith and hope are a piece of cake but charity is a Pandora's box: the monster in the cistern which, when the lid is opened, comes swarming out to seize you by the throat.”
― Alan Bradley, Thrice the Brinded Cat Hath Mew'd
I think I just made a deal with the Devil and sold my soul to ruin my sister’s life. Wow, I should win a Nobel Peace Prize...
