A Parallel Path

Two figures walk alone in the darkness, in the rain…

Driving rain hides the tears that stream down his face
As the steady pounding drowns the sound of his rushing blood.
The night air is bracing, like a cold slap to the face
And he shivers as he imagines it is her hand that slaps him.

Why does it have to be so wrong?

But in the darkness he imagines she is walking beside him.
He is holding her close, sheltering her from the rain’s assault.
The rain drops on her face, like tears, moisten her sweet lips and brighten her eyes.
Her voice, usually bitter with contempt when she utters his name
Is softened by the darkness, turning it to a gentle caress.

But the sun is rising now and there is no warmth in the sun, not for him.
There is only the harsh light of reality…

Why can’t he be free to love her?

But she looks away when he looks at her, turns away, her eyes indifferent.
And she’ll never know how she plagues his thoughts, haunts his dreams.
She’ll never know how much he loves her—he’ll take that secret to his grave.

* * * * *

Steady rain drops wash the tears from her cheeks
As the bitter chill of the night nips at her skin.
She pulls her robes tightly around her
And she imagines it is his arms that hold her, that warm her.

Why does it have to be so wrong?

But in the darkness she imagines he is walking beside her.
He is holding her close, sheltering her from the rain’s assault.
His eyes, cold and grey as the mid-winter sky, burn with love as he looks at her.
His lips, usually sneering, disdaining to even speak her name
Are teased by the night into a smile as they whisper her name softly.

But the sun is rising now and there is no warmth in the sun, not for her.
There is only the harsh light of reality…

Why can’t she be free to love him?

But he looks away when she looks at him, turns away, his lip curling.
And he’ll never know how he plagues her thoughts, haunts her dreams.
He’ll never know how much she loves him—she’ll take that secret to her grave.

Two figures walk alone as the sun rises,
Each too blinded by tears, too lost in longing to notice that they walk a parallel path…
