Life. Or Something Like It…

A/N Let’s just pretend the Heads are assigned to keep a journal. Some will be from Lily’s POV, some will be from James’s POV, and some will be regular POV.
Disclaimer: Yada yada yada. I own nothing. Sad, isn’t it?

Lily’s POV

September 1, 1977
The Hogwarts Express.

Today is the last train ride. I’m sad that I won’t be coming back next year. But it’s OK because it’s going to be a good year. My friends are wonderful. I know what I want to do with my life. I’m the New Head Girl. There is only one drawback to this good school year of mine: James Potter is the Head Boy. What Dumbledore was thinking, I don’t know. Potter is an arrogant, Quidditch playing, idiotic jerk. Even worse, this arrogant, Quidditch playing idiotic jerk has a crush on me. He wouldn’t be so bad if he weren’t so full of himself. I realize Snape provoked him that day in fifth year, but still. There was no need to go to that extreme. OK, now I’m rambling. So I’m stuck with Potter in a private dormitory all year. And here he is, checking in, 15 minutes late. I’d better go and lecture him about the importance of punctuality.

The Head’s Common Room

Potter isn’t AS bad as I thought he was. He seemed to be sincerely enjoying spending time with me this afternoon on the train. Enjoying it so much I had to tell him off for staring at me and not paying any attention. He didn’t complain about all the patrolling and was actually pretty funny. My suspicion is that he read a ‘How To Win That Girl’ book or something. Anyway, before we went off to find our own friends, his hand touched mine, just for a second, and I felt that we really made a connection. It was weird.
Whoa it’s already 9:15. The first day of lessons is tomorrow and I want to be well rested.

The courtyard, break

The Headmaster is plotting something. Potter has been in all of my classes so far. He always has been, but I swear, the Marauders get more immature every year. Professor McGonagall put them all in detention for showering Mariah Sanders with lavender toothpicks. But what was really unfair is that McGonagall looked at me like it was my fault. I have worked hard since I came to Hogwarts to become Head Girl and Potter ruins it. He was chosen by Dumbledore, not me. I can’t control him. Anyway, besides that little incident in Transfiguration, it’s been an OK day so far. Charms was a lot of fun. We spent the entire lesson blowing large emerald green bubbles out of our wands because Flitwick didn’t want to teach. Potter made a little fairy hanging from the chandelier zoom around the classroom. Potions, however, was dismal. Potter and Black were assigned to the table next to my friend Rory Lockhart and I. They spent the whole hour levitating various potion ingredients over Frank Longbottom’s head. The professor gave an assignment to brew and went back to her copy of Witch Weekly. I’m going to stop now because Rory and my other friend Crystal Valentine are coming to talk.

The Head’s Common Room

Well it’s been an interesting day so far. I came down this morning and Potter was sitting on the couch, deeply absorbed in a book. No one knows how odd it is to see Potter thinking, let alone reading. Then I realized it was my journal! He looked up and saw me standing there with this look on my face like I was going to kill him. “POTTER!” I shouted. He got up and ran like his life depended on it (which it did). I don’t think he actually read anything, though. Lessons have been pretty good so far though. Professor Flitwick taught us to perform illusioning charms. And in Transfiguration Peter Pettigrew blew up McGonagall’s desk. Got the spells mixed up. Meant to turn it into a rabbit. In Arithmancy we were assigned an essay that’s going to be a piece of cake for me. Tonight is the first Prefect Meeting. Potter and I are going to introduce the idea of a Halloween carnival to them. We have enough extra money. Professor Dumbledore approved it yesterday. I think it’ll be a hit.
Lily

Dinner

People are looking at me weird because I’m writing instead of talking like everyone else. The Prefect meeting was a huge success. Every single one of them was interested in the Halloween carnival. We even came up with a list of ideas.

Ideas
--------
Games
Dunk-A-Teacher
Scavenger Hunt
Haunted House

Guess who came up with the haunted house idea? Potter. It was brilliant. When he was suggesting it, everyone was listening to him. And again, his hand brushed against mine. It was so warm. And I felt like nothing could go wrong. I think I’m seeing him in a different light or something because I had this dream last night that I was crying and he was just holding me and telling me everything would be all right. What is going on? I am so confused.
Lily

James’s POV

September 4, 1977
The Lake

Wow it’s beautiful outside. I love it here at the lake at night because I can sit and reflect on everything that’s happened recently. I found Lily’s diary thingy on the coffee table and I became deeply interested in it. I only got to read the first three entries before she found me reading it. I liked the second one because, according to her, I am not as bad as she thought I was. Which shows that the Muggle book I read over the summer ‘How To Win That Girl’ came in handy. I wish I thought to write a note in it and ask her to meet me out here. I think she’s coming around, though. We had a Prefect Meeting and I came up with a haunted house idea for a carnival we’re planning. She was totally impressed and when we were cleaning up she smiled at me. I want to tell her how I feel, but I’m afraid of scaring her away. I need some sort of plan of action. Oh, great. I’m late for patrol duty. Evans is going to kill me. Damn.
James

September 5, 1977
Potions

Evans didn’t kill me. She was barely there herself. Like she was off in some fantasyland. She just went, “Oh, it’s OK, James.” She called me James. It’s the first time she ever did that. It nearly made me drop my book in surprise. I asked her if she was feeling OK and she didn’t answer. But she laughed at all of my stupid jokes, just like one of those blonde groupies. (A/N No offense to all you blondes out there. I’m blonde myself.) I still have no idea what was going on. I have my plan all figured out.

My Room

OK, some people have been asking me why I’ve been carrying my notebook everywhere. We (Lily and I) were told in our letters that announced us Heads that we were supposed to keep a journal for the school year. We’re not supposed to turn it in or anything, but it’s supposed to make us remember things about our last year. I guess it’s a pretty good idea. It’s going to be my year with Lily I just know it. I’m not going to forget one minute of it. So my plan is really quite a good one. Thank God for Sirius Black, the brother I never had. We were talking last night and I remember our exact conversation. It goes like this:
Sirius: So Jimmy have you asked the lovely Lily out yet?
Me: No. And don’t call me Jimmy.
Sirius: Dude, Lily is very attractive. If you don’t ask her out soon, she’s going to be snatched up.
Me: Need I remind you that I have done that countless times before and all she does is reject me?
Sirius: It’ll be different this time.
Me: How do you know?
Sirius: Just listen to me.
Me: OK.
Sirius: Just show her you care. Be her friend first. That way, when you ask her, she’ll already know you care.
Me: It just might work.
I hope it will.
James

Lily’s POV

The Library

I am really trying hard to do my Arithmancy essay. I just can’t concentrate. Potter is sitting at the table next to me, drawing I think. I should just go back to the West Tower and do my homework at my desk. But for some reason, my legs just won’t work.

The Head’s Common Room

I just got back from the second Prefect Meeting. Again, another success. Dumbledore is going to conjure the game booths, so that will be taken care of. Professor Flitwick volunteered for the Dunk-A-teacher. Hagrid’s hut will be the Haunted House. Sir Nicholas and The Bloody Baron agreed to help out with the Haunted House as well. This is the list of games we came up with.

Games
--------
Ball Toss through mini Quidditch hoops (Sprout)
Balloon Pop (McGonagall)
Squirt Gun Challenge (5th year Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff prefects)
Fortune Telling Booth (Brazzle) (A/N Trelawney’s predecessor. She was accurate)
Guess How Many Every Flavor Beans in a large jar (6th year Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff prefects)

The other prefects are doing the Haunted House

Haunted House ideas
--------
Ghosts (SN BB)
Zombies (7th year Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff prefects) (A/N costumes of course)
Scary noises (ghoul in Defense Against the Dark Arts room)
Boggart* (If OK 5th year Gryffindor and Slytherin prefects)

*Ask Professor Dumbledore

Of course there will be the usual Halloween feast. The carnival will be announced on Friday. Well, I’ve got Arithmancy homework to attend to, so I’d better go.
Lily

James’s POV

September 8, 1977
Detention

This is the first detention I’ve ever gotten that I didn’t deserve. I had no part in the prank Sirius and Peter pulled on Malfoy. McGonagall knew that, too. I swear there are some people who should just drop dead. (A/N Cough *Kristen Kreuk* Cough) Anyway something is up with Lily and Rory and Crystal. Those three were hanging around all day. They sat with us at lunch and Rory and Crystal kept talking to Sirius and Remus. Lily seemed to be ignoring me, a sure sign that she is interested according to the almighty ‘How To Win That Girl’ book. I have a plan though. It is foolproof. (A/N that means he definitely will mess it up LOL) So my foolproof plan is this: I’m going to buy her a little heart-shaped box I saw her looking at in a magazine and put a little note inside. See, girls like Lily love little romantic things like that. It’s going to win her heart I just know it. Or at the very least, it will move me up to friend status. And it can only get better. Seriously. After 6 years of being at the bottom of the dating chain (I’ve had offers to go out from practically every girl in the year but the only one I wanted was Lily) I will be slightly happier being her friend than an enemy. See, in Hogwarts, the social hierarchy goes like this. I have made a handy guide.

Popular (Quidditch players, Marauders)
Intellects (Lily, Rory, Crystal, prefects)
Normal (Frank Longbottom, Alice Prewett, entire Hufflepuff House)
Slytherins (Malfoy, Snape, Narcissa Black) (There are seven Quidditch players, but as they’re Slytherins, most are generally unliked by people outside of their house)

Then there’s the whole dating thing. Generally, the higher you are, the more people you can go out with that are socially acceptable. If you’re popular, you could go out with anyone and it would be considered cool. The Slytherins, of course, are on the bottom, and are left to find a girl/boy friend within the house. Why I’m bothering to write this all down, I don’t know. Maybe if I have a kid I’ll use my guide to explain things to him. (Of course, if it’s my kid, he or she will be popular automatically and will have to memorize all the secret passageways out of the castle before he’s five.)

Arithmancy
I ordered the box today by owl messenger. 10 Galleons, but it’s totally worth it. The box is silver and covered with some sparkly material. It also has a mirror on the inside of the lid. The rest of it is lined with lavender velvet. I plan to put her favorite flower inside, along with a note to meet me at the lake. Wow, is she gorgeous. Lily, I mean. By some miracle or another, I ended up sitting behind her in Arithmancy and next to her in Potions. I’d better go now, as the teacher is assigning homework.
James

Lily’s POV

September 12, 1977
The Library

Potter keeps staring at me. I wish he would stop. He’s really distracting. I found him reading my journal again yesterday. I was then forced to give him lecture numbers 5 and 6: Personal Privacy and Respecting Other People’s Property. I know he has something up his sleeve. Typical Potter. I know he thinks that I think he’s cool; what with him going around suggesting Haunted Houses and all. I also think he bought that box that I want. Well it’s going to take more than a few presents to win my heart. He’s a lot different than I thought he was. I’ve seen him going out to the lake. I think he really likes me. I’m just waiting for him to ask me to Hogsmeade. I am full ready to accept his invitation this time.

My Room

The weirdest thing happened today. Potter insisted on walking me to every class. He walked next to me and kept talking about the weather. He made a few comments on some Slytherins going by and it totally made me laugh. It was like I had never hated him and we had always been friends. I realize that I was the one who was missing out all those years when I hated him. He always said that I would fall for him, and I guess I did.
Lily

James’s POV

September 15, 1977
Detention

This time I deserved the detention, but as Brazzle’s in charge, all we have to do is show up. OK, Sirius, Peter and I turned Snape and Malfoy into bunnies. Pink bunnies. Talk about embarrassing. McGonagall had to hide her laughter. Even Lily (who has never appreciated my pranks before) cracked a smile. Things have been improving with her on their own. Which is good because she’ll be more likely to come out to the lake. I secretly talked to Rory and Crystal and they said she thought the lake was romantic. She hasn’t been around with those sarcastic comments as much either. And detention is over now, so I’m outta here!
James

The Head’s Common Room

I got the package today. My plan is almost complete. Now I just have to find out what her favorite flower is and track one down.
James

My Room

Rory says Lily’s favorite flowers are what else, lilies. I know Hagrid keeps some in the school garden; I just have to get one from him. Gotta go!
James

September 19, 1977
The Library

I actually got some studying done for the first time all year. Hagrid said that he would let me get some of those lilies at around six, so it’s all going according to plan. I’ve shown her how I really am. I am not that spoiled arrogant Quidditch player she thought I was. So tomorrow morning, I will leave the box on her bed, complete with the lily and note to meet me by the lake. For the love of the little sanity I have left, I hope she comes.
James

Lily’s POV

September 20, 1977
My Room

OK, I just woke up, and what do I find? That exact same little box that I wanted. I know that Potter bought it for me. It’s just so cute, him thinking he can go around buying me little trinkets and all. But it was sweet, too. In a weird way. I just opened it, and there is a lily inside. I must be really important to him. He does the job really well. He looked at the box I wanted, he asked one of my friends (I am assuming) what my favorite flower was. I know just how to thank him, too.
Lily

James’s POV

September 20, 1977
The Head’s Common Room

I couldn’t bring myself to put that note inside. I just couldn’t. I am only just becoming her friend; I don’t want to mess it up by asking her out right away. And here she comes now.
James

September 21, 1977
My Room

All is well in my little world. There was no time to write last night, so here’s what happened yesterday. When Lily came downstairs, she was smiling. “Thank you for the box,” she said. Then she kissed me on the cheek. I’m sure my mouth hung open for at least twenty minutes. She kissed me! Lily. The one I think of night and day. I haven’t got detention in 6 days, the girl I like is beginning to like me, my friends are great, I’m Head Boy. Who has a better life then me? I rule! (For now.)
James

Lily’s POV

September 24, 1977
The Library

OK, sorry it’s been so long. It’s only the first month of the first term so why these teachers are laying us down with work I don’t know. The last few days have been odd. Something possessed me to kiss Potter (Or do I call him James?). I’m not getting too attached to him. He’s a male; who knows what goes on in his head. I don’t think that he’s going to hurt me, but I’m being wary for my own sake. And here’s Rory to work on an essay with me, so I’m going.
Lily

September 27, 1977
The Room of Requirement

Everyone in my life seems to feel the need to bug me, so I’m hiding out in here. It’s very nice, I must say. There’s a fire, some squashy sofas, and a bowl of Chocolate Frogs. Time is going by so fast; it’s nearly October. Things are going really well. Everything seems to be coming together. My friends Rory and Crystal seem to have merged with the Marauders. And being the good friend that I am, I have decided to go with them. They’re good friends, though I could do without Peter. I realized something. Me, Rory, and Crystal are each exactly like one of the three main Marauders. Remus and I are the smart ones. Rory and Sirius are the goof-offs. (I totally mean that in a good way). Crystal and James are the Quidditch players and purebloods. Just my thoughts on it.
Lily

The Head’s Common Room

The last day of September. Soon the Halloween carnival will be here. Then there’s the feast and the Hogsmeade visit. No word on the whole James thing. Oh well.
