I wasn’t sure how I was meant to feel. Yes, I had been a follower of his, but I had never truly agreed with his actions. I only joined his ranks because he threatened to kill mother and father if I didn’t. He needed someone inside of Hogwarts and I was the perfect choice-who would suspect a 16 year old boy of trying to kill Dumbledore?
It was hard to believe that it was all over now. Potter had defeated the Dark Lord, and I couldn’t help but be impressed with him. I was jealous of him, always had been. Typical Gryffindor, he had shown such bravery in the battle. There aren’t a lot of witches or wizards who would go up against the Dark Lord.
Wait why am I thinking about stupid Potter?
Annoyed with myself, I get up from the table without a word to mother and father. They let me go without arguing. I walk through the empty corridors kicking a bit of rubble and not really thinking about where I was going.
“Owch!” I hear a voice say. My bit of stone has hit someone’s legs.
I look up to see Potter sitting on the floor. He is leaning against a wall with his legs stretched out and holding a golden snitch. He glances at me for less than a second and then looks back down at the snitch.
“Sorry Potter.” I mumble and then regret it.
“Whatever.” He replies.
Unable to resist, I snap at him. “Why are you sitting here? Shouldn’t you be surrounded by fans and signing autographs?”
I expect a clever response from him but instead he sighs heavily and says “piss off Malfoy.”
I look at him curiously and notice that there are tear tracks running down his dust and blood splattered face. He has been crying.
“You’ve been crying.” I say stupidly. It came out softer than I had anticipated.
He looks at me again for longer this time. “What do you want Malfoy?”
“What makes you think I want something?” I said.
“You’re lingering.” Harry answers. “Just go…please.” I noticed his voice breaking on the last word.
I don’t go. Instead I sit down next to him and grab the snitch off him.
“Why do you have this?” I asked.
“It’s the snitch I caught in my first match.”
I laugh, unable to stop myself. “Caught? Don’t you mean nearly swallowed?”
His mouth opens slightly in shock. “You remember?”
“Hard to forget.” I said simply. “I remember being so jealous of how well you could fly considering you hadn’t been on a broomstick much.”
“Who are you and what have you done with Draco Malfoy?”
His use of my full name startled me, a tingle ran down my spine. What was wrong with me?
“I’m too exhausted to be a prat to you.” I joked.
“You and me both.” He replied.
We sat in silence for a while until I couldn’t take it anymore. “Why were you crying?” I couldn’t stop myself from asking.
“Why do you care?”
“I don’t know.” I said honestly.
“Well, if you must know. Ginny broke up with me. She said she couldn’t deal with Fred dying and being the girlfriend of the Chosen One or whatever they’ll be calling me now.”
“Oh.” I said. Why couldn’t I think of something helpful to say?
“Yep. I should have known it was coming. If it wasn’t for those reasons she would have broke up with me for something different. I wasn’t exactly the best boyfriend to her.”
“Come on, Potter, as if there is something you’re not good at. You were probably a better boyfriend to her than I was to Pansy. Not that that relationship ever meant anything.” I said bitterly.
“How come?” He asked.
“It was all for show. Father made me go out with her.”
“Let me guess, because she was a rich pureblood?” Harry asked.
“Not exactly.” I desperately wanted to change the subject now. Why did I have to bring up Pansy? I hadn’t ever told anyone the real reason father wanted me to go out with her.
“Just leave it Potter.”
“Why? Come on, I told you why I was crying.”
“Fine.” Maybe it would feel good to get it off my chest after all these years. “When I was 14 father caught me kissing someone I shouldn’t. He beat me then told me that if he ever caught me with someone who wasn’t suitable then he’d kill me. The week after he had Pansy and her family come for tea and told me I had to ask her out. I was so scared that I did it. I hated being stuck with her.”
“Woah.” It was Harry’s turn to sound stupid. “Who were you kissing? A muggleborn?”
“Worse. A muggle…”
“Seriously?!” Harry sounded shocked.
“…boy. A muggle boy. He lived in the village near the manor.”
Harry’s jaw nearly hit the stone floor. “YOU’RE GAY?!” he yelled. It echoed in the empty corridor like his voice was taunting me.
“Keep it down!” I hissed. “I was. I’m not any more because I’m not allowed to be. Father saw to that.”
“Just because your dad says you can’t be, doesn’t mean you’re not.” Harry said. “Things are changing in the wizarding world now, Draco. You can be whatever you want. I think you know that already because otherwise you wouldn’t be here talking to me.”
“I don’t know why I’m talking to you.” I said defensively. “I just am.”
“I’m glad.” Harry said quietly. “I like talking to you. When you’re not being a prat.”
I laughed and it felt good. “I like talking to you too. I should probably get back to my parents though. They will be wondering where I am.”
“I’m going too. I should go to the Gryffindor common room to see Ron and Hermione.”
I stood up and then held out my hand to pull Harry up from the floor. He kept hold of my hand and my heart began to beat faster.
“Stand up to your father Draco. In spite of everything you’ve done you still deserve to be happy.” Harry said.
“So do you. You’ll find someone who deserves you more than the Weaslette ever did.” I replied.
Suddenly, Harry leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on my lips. He let go of my hand and then began to walk away leaving me frozen on the spot.
“I think I already have. See you around Draco.”
