Chapter 7: Sleeping Beauty
Hermione woke to see Ron asleep at her bedside. Looking around she had no idea of where she was, but the bed she was laying in was quite comfortable. She was about to sit up to look around but opted against it because the pillow was too soft and inviting. The nightgown she was put in was terribly uncomfortable and so she squirmed trying to find a position that would fix the cloth working it’s way into awkward places.
“Hermione, you’re awake.”
It was Ron. Hermione just looked at him sincerely.
“How are you feeling?” Ron asked now sitting up.
Hermione racked her brain for possible answers, but couldn’t come up with one.
“Please say you can talk. I was – I mean WE were worried so about you Hermione, you wouldn’t believe me if I tried to tell you.”
“Ron – I’m fine, honest.” Hermione started.
“Oh Hermione!” Ron sprang up and took her into his arms and hugged her like there was no tomorrow.
“Ron, Ron, I can hardly breathe.”
“So sorry ‘Mione.” Ron let her go, but continued to stare admiringly at her. “Well I must fetch Professor Dumbledore. He wanted to speak you when you woke up. I’ll be back in a moment.”
Ron left the room and approached the fireplace.
In a moment Dumbledore’s head came into view.
“Mr. Weasley, is Ms. Granger awake?”
“Alright, I’ll be there in a few seconds.”
Just before his face was gone Ron replied again. “Yes sir.”
Ron strided back into the room where Hermione was now sitting up with her legs dangling over the bed’s edge. She was looking off into the distance.
“Are you alright? You’ve got that look in your eyes again.”
Hermione snapped to and her eyes were now glistening. “My parents are d-dead aren’t they Ron?” Her lips were now trembling. Ron nodded gravely at her and she began weeping again. Ron went to her side and wrapped his arms around her again. “Ron, I watched them kill my parents. They were so helpless. I tried to protect them but they pushed me out the door and made me run. A-a-and I-I tried, I-I just wasn’t f-fast e-e-enough.” And she cried harder.
Dumbledore appeared solemn in the door and cleared his throat.
“Ms. Granger, I need to ask you to tell me what exactly happened.”
Hermione nodded and took a deep breath. “We were all sitting at the table eating dinner when we heard several popping noises and my dad went to see what the noise was a-and we – my mom and I – we heard him yell for us to run and then we heard a thump of something hitting the floor and my mother began ushering me out the back door and she went back inside and locked me out after telling me to run. At first I pounded my fists on the door, but then I heard her scream and so I ran. Oh I ran as fast as I could, but it wasn’t fast enough and one of them caught up with me and stunned me I think. But then I don’t remember the rest and now I am here.”
Dumbledore was nodding gravely and rubbing his chin thoughtfully.
“It is very possible that you have had a very powerful memory charm put on you and that a lot more than that has happened. You have been missing for approximately five days.”
“Five days?!” Hermione nearly yelled. “And I can’t remember any of what happened.”
Ron was now debating telling them about how he saw while painting the room with Ginny.
“Were they after me and my family because I am a muggle born? Or is it because of whom I’m friends with?” Hermione asked aloud more to herself than anyone in the room.
“That is possible. They kept you alive for a reason, so the latter motivation is more likely.” Dumbledore said, also thinking out loud.
“And did you escape or did they let you go?” Ron speculated.
“Well I hope I escaped. I’d like to think I was smart enough to escape those dumb deatheaters.”
Dumbledore chuckled because Hermione was now cursing under her breath and clenching her fists. “Now that you’re safe, we need to see to where you will be staying.”
“Can’t she stay with my family?” Ron asked.
Hermione put on the most pathetic look and beamed up at Dumbledore.
“Yes, yes, well I suppose that could work. After all Mr. Potter will be staying with you as well.”
For the first time since Hermione was found you could see a smile on both Ron and Hermione’s faces. Hermione looked like she was going to hug her headmaster, but was trying her best to stay put.
“I expect you to have your work done, and oh here is your letter – we can’t have our head girl with out supplies now.” Dumbledore handed her a yellowish envelope with the green Hogwarts crest on it.
All that held Hermione back from hugging Dumbledore vanished because she was now dangling from his neck.
“Oh thank you – that you professor!” Hermione squealed now giggling. “But whose head boy professor?”
“Well, Mr. Weasley of course.” Dumbledore gestured towards a blushing Ron.
It was now Ron’s turn to be hugged by Hermione.
“Oh Ron we’ll be the best head boy and girl Hogwarts had ever seen!” Hermione was now glowing and just stared into his eyes smiling brightly.
“I’m sure we will ‘Mione.” Ron said blushing even more.
“So where’s Harry?” Hermione asked looking around the room. “He was here when I first started remembering stuff.”
“I think he’s in the lobby sleeping now.”
Hermione giggled. “Alright well I am beat and I’m going to have a long day tomorrow if I have to go back to my house to collect my things. I’ll have to face seeing it all again.” Hermione stared down at her bed.
“Harry and I will be with you the whole time. We’ll help you out. I promise.” Ron moved a lock of hair off of her face and then pulled her head into his chest and then kissed the top of her head.
“Oh Ron you’re such a great friend. I don’t know where I’d be with out you – and Harry of course.” Hermione let her eyes leak a few tears as she gazed at Ron. “Could you stay with me while I sleep? I don’t want to be alone yet.”
“Of course ‘Mione.”
“Well I’m going to head back to Hogwarts. I bid you farewell and safe keeping.” Dumbledore left the room and headed for the fireplace.
Hermione crawled back into bed and Ron pulled the covers over her.
“You can sleep up here too – that is if you want to. It’s got to be terribly uncomfortable sleeping in a wooden chair.” Hermione said scooting over for him.
Ron looked thoughtful and nodded. “Thanks.” He didn’t bother pulling the covers off of her and just fell asleep on his side facing Hermione’s back. “Goodnight ‘Mione.”
(A bit touchy feely but hey – we found out what happened to Hermione to a certain extent and it can only get better from here, right? Sorry for the lack of Harry in this chapter, but there will be plenty of Harry action next chapter. Promise. Until then review!!)
