(Sirius! Image by me!)
I stood in the corridor for several moments, wondering what the bloody hell I was going to do now that I had nowhere to go. My two best friends were off with boys and I was stuck out here in a bloody hallway.
“Well… Oookay then,” I mumbled to myself, still facing the door James had just slid into place.
“Okay what?” someone said from behind me. I turned around and Remus was standing there, a goofy smile on his face, something I didn’t see often from him.
I opened my mouth to answer but my brain seemed to have other plans. “Why the bloody hell did you let James out?” I shrieked, suddenly angry once more. This was just a fantastic way to start the year off.
Remus raised an eyebrow, but his smile made him appear amused. “You make it sound like I let a pet on the loose. Don’t feed the James! Though, I suppose that’s rather fitting. But you know as well as I do that telling Mary to keep us all in the compartment would have never worked. Even Peter left to go talk to some Hufflepuff girl he likes, apparently.”
“Poor girl,” I muttered before I could stop myself. Oops.
Remus laughed, a huge, booming laugh. “I would have to agree with you on that one, he’s a great friend and he’s smarter than he looks, but when it comes to talking to girls, it’s ridiculously painful to witness.”
“Maybe he just needs some practice,” I said with a shrug.
“So what you’re saying is that I should lock you two in a room together and make him talk to you for hours on end,” he said with a laugh. “Are you telling me that you’re volunteering?”
I narrowed my eyes and tried my best to glare. “You wouldn’t dare,” I said, hoping my voice at least sounded intimidating.
He shrugged, “We’ll see.” I gave him a playful shove and he started laughing.
“OH!” I said suddenly and he seemed to freeze, looking worried. “Congratulations on becoming a Prefect!” I said and hugged him. Ugh. He always smells so good. Like salt and something sweet like burnt sugar and a clean scent like soap. I still remember the first time I hugged him and the shock of how he was one of the few guys I knew who didn’t smell like, well, boy.
I pulled back he smiled at me, his cheeks now pink. Why is he blushing? “Thanks, but I’m really just a backup.”
“Nah, you’ll be a natural, I’m sure of it! I always wondered why Dumbledore had made James a Prefect and not you. I mean, you seemed to be the obvious choice to me,” the words kept coming out and I shut my mouth quickly, hoping that I wasn’t rambling too badly. You seemed to be the obvious choice to me. C’mon brain, now you’re the one being obvious. If he hadn’t figured out that I liked him by now- HEY. I never said anything about liking him.
He gave me a crooked smile, his cheeks were now full-on red. Seriously, why was he blushing? “You actually think so?”
I nodded, trying to think my words through before I spoke. Okay, Sam. You’ve got this. Just say something… charming. “Well, yeah. I mean, you’re charming, you’re great and speaking to people, you always make people feel comfortable, you’re the least annoying of your lot, and from what I can tell with your friends, you’re fair when there are disputes, plus you’re attractive and that seems to help when you’re a leader. I mean, people listen to those who are attractive, right?” I said then suddenly realized what I’d said. Well, shit. My face felt as if it was on fire and I looked down at my feet, not wanting to see his reaction.
“I didn’t know you that thought so highly of me,” he said quietly.
“Well, how could I not?” I asked, finally raising my eyes to meet his. His eyes were flicking back and forth, seeming to search my own for something, which I could only assume was doubt. I could tell that he really didn’t know how I could see any good in him. How could he think so little of himself?
“I just…” he shook his head and seemed to hesitate. “Aside from my friends- James and Sirius and Peter- no one’s really paid attention to me. I really don’t think, however, that I’m as good a person as you seem to think I am,” he said, his voice edged with something hard.
“I’ve paid attention,” I blurted out. Shit.
“Sam,” he said slowly and my heart stopped beating. DON’T YOU DIE ON ME NOW, DAMN IT!
“Remus!” someone called and I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. My heart resumed beating. Oh great, welcome back. Remus opened his mouth, looking as if he were about to say something before the same voice called his name. We both turned and saw Peter making his way over. Of course.
Then it hit me… I WAS JUST FLIRTING WITH REMUS LUPIN. “I’ll talk to you later, Sam?” Remus said, his voice holding something I could have sworn sounded like sadness. I nodded, suddenly very upset that Peter was here. This is just karma for having made fun of him and his ability to talk to girls, isn’t it?
I watched as they walked down the corridor and into our compartment right as Sirius slipped out, looking both ways before sauntering off down the corridor to the back of the train. I rolled my eyes. Probably off to find his latest victim. Sirius had always been awful the first couple days, making his rounds to see who had managed to get hotter over the summer.
I slid open the compartment door and they didn’t stop even then. “Oi! Lovebirds, cool your jets, would you? I’m happy you’re in love or whatever, but you need to be appropriate.” They broke apart and my jaw dropped. It was Mary and Sirius. Bloody pig.
I decided that I would just walk up and down the corridor, glancing into different compartments and trying to do my best to keep my mind off Remus. Like that was going to happen.
Towards the back of the train, I glanced into a compartment window and saw a couple nearly devouring each other on the seat. There’s a time and a place I mean, how far are you going to go in public? Come on, at least have some decency here!
I took a deep breath and opened the compartment door, though even that didn’t break them from their ever-so-passionate embrace. Kill me now. The joys of being a Prefect!
“Oi! Lovebirds! Why don’t we calm ourselves down and be appropriate? Don’t get me wrong, it’s swell that you two are in love or whatever, but at least be decent. This is school, after all and-” I trailed off as the couple broke apart. My jaw dropped and I found myself completely and utterly speechless… It was Mary and Sirius.
Mary immediately turned bright red and jumped up so that she was standing in front of me, pulling her shirt- which had been nearly over her shoulders- down and stared at the ground. Sirius, on the other hand, stood there and smiled.
“MARY ELIZABETH MCKINNON!” I shouted and her face became an even darker shade of red. “What the fuck were you thinking?! SIRIUS?” I shrieked and she opened and closed her mouth, seeming to be unable to speak.
“Oh, come on now. We’re all adults here, aren’t we? Why’re you so upset, Sammy?” Sirius asked in a mocking tone. “I mean, it was only a matter of time, I knew she was bound to give into my advances at some point or another.”
The cocky bastard. I opened my mouth to say something rude when I remembered what Remus had told me. Damn it. He just left his family permanently, the same thing that nearly sent Lily over the edge and I’m going to sit here yelling at him for making out with a girl.
I shut my mouth quickly and Sirius smiled. Remus is lucky that I promised him. Only for Remus would I keep my mouth shut around this asshole.
I took a deep breath and looked at Mary, not wanting to get angrier with Sirius. “Look, I’m sorry I screamed at you, Mary,” she smiled slightly, but remained tomato red. “I guess I’m just surprised is all.”
“Can we talk about this later?” Mary asked quietly before looking at me. I nodded and Sirius made his way towards the door. He turned as he was next to me and bowed slightly.
“It’s been a pleasure, ladies.” He winked at Mary, “Until next time.”
“Mary…” I started, shaking my head.
A tear slid down her cheek, “No, Sam. Just- just don’t, okay? I don’t need the lecture. I know that you mean well, I really do. I just can’t handle hearing what a horrible person I am right now.”
She stalked past me and out the door, walking down the corridor and leaving me feeling like complete and utter shit. Now what?
