I was going to KILL James Potter. How, I don’t know. And, I don’t necessarily condone killing, but mess with my friends and I will hurt you. I guess I got some of that Hufflepuff loyalty from my mother. Lily was still sobbing as I pulled her into the Prefect’s compartment.
There were a couple young Prefects- a Gryffindor girl that I hadn’t seen before, which probably meant she was an incoming Fifth year Prefect, and a Sixth year Hufflepuff boy- sitting in the corner of the compartment talking when we walked in. I grumbled.
“Would you guys mind giving us an hour or so?” I asked as nicely as I could manage.
“The meeting w-will happen a-at one o-o’clock sharp,” Lily hiccupped.
They looked hesitant. Screw this. “Look, guys,” I said, looking back and forth between the two of them. “Seventh year Ravenclaw prefect myself and this here is your Head Girl-”
“Present,” Lily muttered and I rolled my eyes. Brilliant, Lily.
They nodded slowly. “Like a bride on her wedding day, you’re going to make sure she gets everything she wants, okay? Lucky for you two all that means at the moment is an empty compartment. So if you could leave for a bit, that would be absolutely splendid. Take a walk, go make out, do whatever it is you youngins do these days.”
They scrambled off the bench seat and out of the compartment quickly, the girl looking quite scared. Brilliant job, Samantha, already scaring some Fifth years. I walked Lily to where they’d been sitting and helped her down onto the bench.
“Now Lily,” I said in a quiet voice and she looked up at me through red, glossy eyes. Shit. First day of school and our Head Girl looks as if she’s on drugs or drunk. “I’m going to get you a wet towel and then we’ll have a nice, calm conversation, okay?” I smiled at her and she nodded.
I slid out of the compartment and locked it with my wand before turning around and running into someone… literally. I fell onto the ground and let out a loud, involuntary grunt.
“Oh Merlin, I’m sorry!” a deep voice said and after blinking a couple times I realized there was a hand in front of my face, offering me help off the ground.
I placed my hand in theirs and as I was lifted up, I looked up to see none other than Remus Lupin looking down at me, appearing to be concerned. Way to go, Sam. Always the epitome of grace.
“Are you okay?” he asked quietly and I realized that although he’d already pulled me up to my feet, my hand was still in his. I pulled it away and nodded, hoping my face wasn’t turning as red as I currently believed it to be.
“I’m fine,” I said, my voice coming out a mere squeak. Damn it, brain! C’mon, you can’t manage to answer in a normal voice? I cleared my throat, “I’m fine.” I managed to get out. Nailed it.
“Great,” he said, beaming that straight, white-toothed smile of his. His smile fell suddenly and he cleared his throat, suddenly looking awkward. “Hey, I know this may be too much to ask,” he started and my heart leapt into my throat. Calm your shit, Samantha. “Too much to ask of anyone, especially for James and Sirius, but they’ve had a rough summer.”
“Umm-” I began but he shook his head slightly.
“Please, let me finish?” he said and I shut my mouth, nodding. “I’m sorry, I just need to get this out so you don’t smack Sirius within the first ten minutes of term, not that he doesn’t deserve it sometimes,” he muttered and I stifled a giggle.
“Okay, here’s the thing- Sirius has always had a pretty rough time with his parents, his dad was fairly abusive, both verbally and physically, and with Regulus being the Golden Boy and Sirius being the Black Sheep of the family, even his biggest accomplishments were seen as failures in his parents’ eyes. He’s fought back for a while, but he had the last straw this summer when he mentioned wanting to be an Auror and they told him what a waste of space he was,” Remus began and I couldn’t help but gape at him. I had no idea Sirius’ home life was so bad, he’d always been so arrogant and confident around everyone while he was at school.
“Well, he finally stood up for himself, and in doing so, walked out on his family. He packed what little he had there and asked James if he could stay for the night. James’ parents being the incredible people they are told him he could stay as long as he needed and he’s basically become a part of their family now, but what I’m trying to say is that he’s given up a lot this summer and he’s really grown up, but that also means bouts of acting out because he, deep down, is upset that he’s lost his family and I’m sure being around Regulus now that we’re at school won’t help,” he added.
“As you well know, Sirius and James play off each other so with Sirius acting out, it means James will be as well. Especially with them having spent every moment of the summer together. Just promise me that you won’t tell them I said anything, the pride between the two of them surpasses that of all the students of Hogwarts and then some. And I’m not trying to make excuses for them either, I just wanted to let you know why they might be worse than usual… if that’s possible.”
“Oh,” was all I could manage. DAMN IT, BRAIN! “Oh, Umm… Alrighty then.” My brilliance seems to be wavering in his presence, it makes me wonder if the Sorting Hat made a mistake with the whole sorting me into Ravenclaw thing. SNAP OUT OF IT, YA LITTLE SHIT! He gave me a sad smile and put his hand on my shoulder. Bloody hell. Remus Lupin was touching me… again. For the SECOND TIME in a matter of minutes!
“I knew I could count on you, Sam. You’ll keep Mary and Lily in check, right? Without really saying anything?” he asked, his blue eyes searching mine and full of hope.
“Of course,” I said breathlessly. You know, with all the books I’ve read I had always imagined the whole not being able to breathe around people they fancied thing to be exaggerated, but given my current state- SHUT UP, BRAIN, I DO NOT FANCY REMUS!
“Thank you,” he said and walked past me with a smile.
“Anytime, porcupine!” I said in a chipper voice. WHERE IN MERLIN’S NAME DID THAT COME FROM? I heard Remus chuckle from behind me as the compartment door slid shut. I could feel my face heat up instantly and I took off towards the bathroom, dodging several students who were giving me odd looks.
After slipping in, I grabbed a towel from the rack, marveling, as usual, when another took its place. I turned the faucet on and splashed my face a few times, trying to calm my nerves. One would think that given my group of friends, talking to one of the Marauders wouldn’t faze me. But this is Remus. Kind, gentle, smart Remus. He- NO! STOP IT, YOUNG LADY!
YOUNG LADY?! WHY AM I SUDDENLY A YOUNG LADY?!
… Not that I’m not- Oh, shut up.
Sometimes I worry about my sanity.
I placed my hands on the sink and closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. Once I felt sufficiently calm, only a few breaths later, I wet the towel with cold water and rung out the excess before heading back to the Prefect’s Compartment.
Glancing both ways, I unlocked the compartment, slipped in and locked it behind me before making my way over to Lily. “How’re you holding up, love?”
She shrugged as I sat next to her and pressed the cold towel to her forehead. Her eyes shut and she leaned into me, allowing me for one of the first times ever, to feel like I was being helpful.
“I’m better,” her voice was barely audible. “This is just going to be a tough year. But really, I think part of why I was so stressed and just snapped was that I hadn’t told you guys what was going on yet.”
“I know it’ll be a rough one, but it’ll also be a lot of fun,” I sighed and she grabbed my hand. “We’ll make it through all of this, okay? You, Me, and Mary.”
She nodded and managed a small smile, “Thanks, Sammy. I love you guys to death.”
“The feeling’s mutual,” I said softly and her smile widened.
“Now there’s that smile I love so much,” a familiar voice said and I froze, wondering who I was going to have to kill.
I stood up, “POTTER! WHAT IN MERLIN’S NAME ARE YOU DOING HERE?!” I screamed, my temper flaring faster than usual. “HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GET PAST MARY?”
“My, my. And I thought Lily had a temper,” James muttered, which only served to make me even more angry. “Relax, Sammy,” Woah there, what gives you the right to call me that? he said with a laugh, “Sirius began flirting with her, as usual, and Remus left a few minutes ago, something about patrolling the train. What with Dumbledore appointing him as an extra Prefect, something about needing more leadership in these troubled times. Whatever that means,” he muttered. “Anyways, with all that happening, it was easy for me to slip out unnoticed.”
“Oi! Potter! Shut up, will you? How did you get in here? I locked the door!” I cried, not wanting to upset Lily after I’d finally got her calm. She sat next to be, stiff as a board.
“You do realize that I too have a wand, right? For a Ravenclaw, you haven’t thought things through much, have you?” he asked with a chuckle.
“I bloody well have thought things through! I just figured that most people, you know, those with common courtesy, would at least have the decency to knock before entering a locked room!” I said, my voice rising in pitch.
“Oh, was I interrupting something?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. “By all means, do continue.”
“Well yes, we-” I cut off, realizing what he had meant. “Pervert.”
“Look, Samantha, joking aside, I did come in here for something. I know that I was being rude and I apologize for my teenage boy-ish behavior. Would you mind if I talked to Lily for a moment?” he asked, his voice bordering on what actually sounding like sincerity. “Alone,” he added quickly.
Then it hit me- James Potter, prat extraordinaire had just admitted that he, was in fact, being a prat. And not only that, he had actually apologized for it. I sat there in stunned silence for a few moments before Lily finally spoke.
“Sure,” her voice was quiet. I looked at her in shock, my mouth hanging open slightly. She nodded at me, “It’s fine, Sam. I’m a big girl.” When she winked afterwards, I realized that she was genuinely okay with this. With being alone with Potter in a room. What the bloody hell was happening?
“I- Umm… I’ll go patrol then,” I said, realizing for the first time what Potter had said earlier, Remus was a Prefect now! As I walked out, I saw James looking as shocked as I was that Lily actually said it was okay, clearly he hadn’t been expecting that. “I’ll kill you if you upset her,” I whispered.
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” he said breathlessly as I slipped out into the corridor, the door closing behind me.
And here we are, about to start the meeting with the Prefects and James and Lily are alone together. Bum bum bummmmm! Reviews? Pretty please?
