“That’s great, Freya.” He told her honestly, “What time are you going to go?”
“In about an hour actually, I’m going to Floo home and see them.” Freya told him.
“Did you want me to get Samantha’s stuff ready so that we can come with you? They can spend some time with her.” Louis stated going to stand up so that he could begin getting their daughters things ready. He thought that it was great that her parents were beginning to come around to the idea of them keeping Samantha.
Freya stopped him, “No, I’m going to go and see them alone.”
Louis seemed a bit stunned at her words, “I can understand that they don’t like me, but they can’t hate me forever. We’re practically family now, we all have to get on with each other so that we can make things work.”
Freya shuffled on the spot as she crossed her arms and looked at him. “I know that, but I don’t want to start arguments today. I just want to have a nice visit with them that isn’t going to end in someone thrown out of the house.”
Louis wasn’t happy about that, but he let it go. He gave a sigh, “Why don’t you want to take Samantha with you? Surely they want to see their Granddaughter.” He tried to keep his anger to himself, but he couldn’t help but be snappish at her.
“You know I don’t trust myself taking her by the Floo network,” Freya told him.
“You need to do it at some point,” Louis told her, “hell, we both need to do it at some point.”
“And I will when she’s older and I trust myself a bit more.” Freya told him, her eyebrows furrowing into a frown. “At the moment I barely trust not falling flat on my face when I go by myself.”
Louis nodded as he sat back down on the edge of the bed. Freya watched him for a moment before coming over to him and running a hand through his messy blonde hair and placing a kiss on the top of his head.
“Don’t be angry at me, Louis.” She said to him softly, worry in her voice at him being mad at her.
“I’m not angry at you, Freya.” Louis said, looking up at her and pulling her gently towards him so that he could kiss her on the lips. “It’s fine. You go and have fun with your parents, you all need to work some things out.”
Freya moved away from him and grabbed for her bag before leaving the room. Louis stood up from the bed and checked that Samantha was still sleeping in the Moses basket, before following Freya out of the room. He made sure to leave the door open so that he could hear Samantha if she began crying.
Freya gave him another kiss on the lips before she used the floo network to leave the house, leaving Louis almost alone in the house.
He gave a loud sigh as he rubbed his hands across his face. He wanted nothing more than to just yell at Freya’s parents that they need to get over everything. That they needed to accept that Samantha was here and wasn’t going anywhere.
Louis wondered if there would ever be a time that he wouldn’t dislike Ted Jackson, who still seemed to be controlling Freya even though she wasn’t living with him.
A knock on the door brought Louis out of his thoughts. He wasn’t surprised when he opened it to find Horatio standing the other side of the door, a wide grin on his face as he lunged forwards and pulled Louis into a tight hug.
“Hey, Horatio.” Louis said, hugging Horatio back before letting him go so that Horatio could come into the house and he could shut the door behind them.
“I felt like I needed to come and keep you company.” Horatio told him honestly as he walked towards the front room, and looking around it. “It was a weird feeling, I thought it was indigestion at first.”
“Indigestion? Well, whatever that feeling was, you have perfect timing, Horatio.” Louis said with a laugh as he followed Horatio, he seemed to realise what Horatio was looking for. “Samantha’s upstairs sleeping, she should wake up in about an hour for some food.”
“Already got her into a routine?” Horatio asked, Louis noticed that he seemed impressed.
“She’s a week old, It’s barely a routine, I just know she wakes up around two for some food.”
“I can’t believe that she’s already a week old, it’s gone really quickly.”
“I know,” Louis admitted, “Before I know it, I’ll be back at work.”
“So where’s Freya? It seems like you’re alone in the house.”
“I am alone, apart from Samantha. Freya’s gone to see her parents.” Louis told him as they walked to the kitchen to get themselves a drink.
“And she didn’t want to take you or Samantha with her?” Horatio asked with a frown.
“Her parents don’t like me,” Louis replied with a shrug. “Well, her father hates me.”
“Understatement of the century. Doesn’t explain why she didn’t take Samantha with her, though.” Horatio said, Louis gave a shrug.
“I asked her and she didn’t seem to want to talk about it. Which is making me a bit worried, she seems different lately.” Louis stated. He had been having thoughts about Freya’s behaviour lately that he was too scared to admit to out loud to anyone, hoping that it would just pass. He knew that he could talk to Horatio about his fears, hoping that Horatio would tell him that he was just imagining it all. “I’ve noticed lately that she doesn’t seem to spend much time with Samantha. She seems to pass her to other people as soon as she can, mainly letting me pick her up or look after her. Should I be worried about this Horatio?”
Horatio thought for a moment at his words. “I think that she just needs time to get used to everything, I think that you should continue being there for you. Maybe she’s worried that she’ll be doing it all herself when the time comes for you to leave for Hogwarts, it’s got to be scary for her. Just keep reassuring her that you’re here for her and maybe ask your family to keep an eye on her when you’re gone.”
Louis nodded at his words, wanting to try anything that would make Freya happier or feel better. He looked up as Samantha let out a small cry from her Moses basket. But before Louis could get off of the bed, Horatio had rolled across the bed and picked up Samantha.
“Someone must have realised that Uncle Horatio was here,” Horatio stated as he began to rock Samantha in his arms.
“That is most peoples reactions to you being around,” Louis said with a smile as he checked the time on his watch. “I normally cry when I see you.”
“You only cry because you’re not me.” Horatio stated with a smile before looking down at Samantha, who was sniffling but had her eyes focused in his direction.
“So, when do you go back to work?” Horatio asked Louis.
“The day after tomorrow, although I’ll be off on my birthday.”
“Yes, the party. I’m excited about it.” Horatio stated, “It’s going to be a good one. I’ll be arriving with Molly at some point. Is it alright if I bring Alyssa? I think that mum and dad will be going out.”
“Yeah, that’s fine.” Louis nodded, he knew that Alyssa would be more than welcome, it was the more the merrier in his grandmother’s eyes. His seventeenth birthday party was going to take place at his grandparents’ house. He had told them that he didn’t need to celebrate it with a party, but none of the adults had listened to him. They had all told him that turning seventeen was a big occasion in a Witch and Wizards life. He knew that it was going to be fun and much more than he deserved when he had already asked so much from them all.
“You’re going to get the best birthday present off of me,” Horatio said happily, his face breaking into an excited grin. Louis was worried about what exactly Horatio would have brought him, his gifts were quite unique. He just hoped that this time it was something that wouldn’t embarrass him in front of his family.
“It’s not you wrapped up as a present is it?” Louis asked him. Horatio shook his head.
“You’re not getting the same gift two years in a row.” Horatio said with a laugh. “This time Alyssa helped me pick it out, so you know it’s going to be good.”
Louis was relieved, as hilarious as it was to get Horatio as a gift, he couldn’t get rid of him for almost two weeks after his birthday.
“So how are things at home?” Louis asked Horatio, wondering how his family was doing. It felt strange that he hadn’t been over at Horatio’s at all this holiday. Normally he would have spent at least one night there by now, but everything had changed since Samantha arrived, now it would be a lot harder for him to leave without her.
“Alyssa is continuing to be amazing, I’ve really liked being around her a lot again, I’ve really missed her.” Horatio beamed proudly, “She got a certificate for being the fastest swimmer the other day. I’m going to frame it and put it on my wall.”
“That’s really good, although I think that Alyssa should be the one who gets to keep the certificate.”
Horatio scoffed, “She can come and look at it.”
Louis shook his head at Horatio before chancing the next question, worried about the answer that he would receive from Horatio. “How’s Nikolos doing?”
Horatio’s face dropped into a scowl instantly. “Terrible, he’s back with Richard, I know he is,”
“How do you know that?”
“His behaviour, he’s becoming withdrawn again, he’s being jumpy...” Horatio faltered off at the end and Louis looked at him wondering why he had stopped talking. He noticed that Horatio seemed to be deliberating whether he should mention what was on his mind.
“The last time he was home...” Horatio faltered again and he seemed entirely focused on looking at Samantha, his eyes tearing up slightly. “... he was acting different. He seemed scared of something, scared that someone was following him. It might have been the drugs talking, I don’t know, but I’ve never seen him so scared of something. He passed out before he could say anything else, but he asked me not to leave him. Louis, I’ve never seen him like this, I’m worried.”
“It sounds like it could be Richard involved, did you talk to him after he woke up?” Louis asked tenderly, putting a hand on Horatio’s arm comfortingly.
“No,” Horatio shook his head, giving a small sniff, still focused entirely on Samantha. “He had gone by the time that I had woken up, I think he was trying to avoid mum and dad. I can’t believe that he’s back on the drugs, he promised me never again.”
“Have you told your parents?”
“No, I don’t know what they would do if they found out, it might be the final straw for them.”
“You can’t just keep this to yourself,” Louis told him.
“I know that, I’m trying to get in touch with him via letter, see if I can meet up with him to talk? I actually wanted to ask your father if Nikolos has been seen at work lately?”
“You can hang around here until he gets back, if you want? I think he had a half day today.” Louis stated, he was worried about his friend and how much pressure he seemed to be under with his brother.
“If that’s alright.” Horatio stated, finally looking away from Samantha and over at Louis.
“Of course it’s alright, you practically live here anyway.” Louis stated with a laugh, nudging Horatio slightly with his shoulder. Horatio gave his own chuckle and Louis was glad to see that his best friend was beginning to snap back to his normal self. Louis didn’t like seeing Horatio seem so down.
Samantha’s cries caused them both to look down at her, Louis quickly looked at the time, she wasn’t due a feed for another half an hour. He knew that they should probably begin to make their way downstairs and prepare her bottle though. Maybe having something to do would help to take Horatio’s mind off of his brother.
“Come on, you can feed your goddaughter.” Louis stated as he stood up, Horatio rose from the bed slowly, Samantha still in his arms.
These words perked Horatio up instantly.
“You can also change her next nappy.” Louis tells him quickly and leaves the room before Horatio could refuse.
“Oh, you also should get all the cuddles in with her now that you can. As soon as dad walks through that door, he’ll be taking her from you.” Louis told Horatio, as they both walked down the stairs. Louis hadn’t seen Horatio take so long to get down them in all the years he’d known him.
“Your dad is going to have a fight on his hands.”
Louis turned to give Horatio an incredulous look, Horatio gave a defeated sigh. “Alright, your dad would so win that fight. But I could glare from across the room.”
Louis laughed, still finding it amazing just how many people loved Samantha and she hadn’t been here for that long. He just wished that Freya’s parents could come around like everyone else had.
Maybe one day.
