“It feels weird, doesn’t it?” Louis asked as he tore his eyes away from his little girl to look at Freya, who was watching him through blood shot and tired eyes. She nodded at his words and he noticed that she was on the verge of tears; Louis stood up from his seat and placed his daughter down in the cot that had been brought into the room earlier, before taking a seat on the edge of Freya’s bed and grabbing for her hand.
“What’s wrong?” he asked her gently, raising his free hand to brush away one of her fallen tears.
Freya shook her head as she sat up, letting go of Louis’s hands so that she could bury her face in her own. Louis pulled her into a hug without a second thought and Freya wrapped her arms around him tightly as she sobbed into his shoulder.
“I didn’t think it would be this painful,” Freya told him through her tears. Louis rubbed his hand on her back comfortingly.
“Did you want me to ask the nurse if you can have more pain relief potion?” Louis asked her softly, not sure what else he was able to do.
“It’s not just that,” Freya told him with a sniff, “I didn’t think it would hurt this much that my parents didn’t come to see me.”
“Maybe they didn’t get the message?” Louis suggested to her as he placed a kiss on the top of her head, “Or maybe they’re waiting until tomorrow to come and see you because they know how tired you’d be.”
“Maybe,” Freya said as she sniffed again.
“I can send them another owl if you want?” Louis said and Freya nodded at his words.
“Thank you, Louis. You’ve been so great; I don’t know what I would do without you.”
“I’m always here for you Freya; it’ll be us two and Samantha for always.”
Freya nodded slowly as she pulled away from Louis and wiped her eyes with her hands as she tried to stop her tears.
“I’m feeling quite tired,” Freya stated to him as she lay back down on her bed and looked at him. “I wish you could stay here with me.”
“I wish I could too,” Louis told her honestly, “But I think I’m already pushing my luck with the Healers by staying past visiting hours. Besides you need your rest, you’ve been through so much.”
Louis stood up and leant down to kiss Freya on the lips, lingering for a moment as neither of them wanted Louis to go.
“I’ll be back up as soon as I can in the morning, well, in a few hours actually.” Louis told her as he moved away from her and over to his daughter, who was wrapped up in the yellow blanket that Molly had made, Samantha was still sleeping and Louis touched her face gently with his fingers, still amazed that she was actually here.
“You be good for your mummy, she’s very tired and needs her rest.” Louis said to her, Samantha made no movement from her slumber to show that she had heard him.
He turned to look at Freya, who already had her eyes closed; he smiled before slipping quietly out of the room and making his way down the corridor.
Just as he was wondering whether to use the Floo network to get home or send a message for someone in his family to come and apparate him, Horatio appeared from the waiting room that Louis passed on his way out. Louis looked at him in surprise as Horatio walked next to him with a smile.
“How’s it going, daddy?” Horatio asked as he threw an arm around Louis’s shoulders as they walked, giving him a half hug.
“It’s going great, what are you doing here? Don’t you want to get home?” Louis asked him as they walked down towards the lift so that they could go down to the ground floor, shrugging Horatrio’s arm off of him.
“Nah, I took Molly home and came back to make sure you got home, I told your family not to worry and get some sleep and I’d bring you home.”
“You’re a good friend.”
“I think you’ll find I’m the best friend you could have.” Horatio stated smugly, “besides, now that Freya is staying in the hospital overnight I can finally stay at yours again, it’s been too long since we had a sleepover.”
“Probably shouldn’t call it a sleepover,” Louis stated with a laugh as they entered the empty lift and pressed the button for the ground floor.
“Yeah, we don’t do much sleeping do we?” Horatio laughed as he nudged Louis, who rolled his eyes.
“Seriously though, I miss having you around,” Horatio admitted, “for a long time I’ve had you in the same dormitory as me, it gets a bit lonely when you’re not around for me to talk to.”
“I am your only friend,” Louis stated, agreeing with Horatio’s words, he did miss Horatio being around too, but that would change as soon as they go back to Hogwarts, but he didn’t want to think about leaving Samantha, it was going to be hard come September.
“That is true, but I’ve got no need for other friends. Plus, I have a girlfriend now.” Horatio said with a smile as the lift let out a ‘ping’ and the doors opened; they stepped out into the entrance hall that only held a few people with various ailments affecting them. But they walked passed them and made their way out of the hospital so that Horatio could apparate them back to Louis’s house.
“No one thought that that would ever happen,” Louis said with a laugh.
“Neither did I Louis, neither did I.” Horatio grabbed for Louis’s arm once they were in a safe clearing for them to disapparate. “You ready?”
Louis nodded and Horatio turned on the spot.

Louis’s father was still awake when he arrived back home, giving him the news that he had sent another message to Freya’s parents to let them know that they were grandparents. Louis was thankful that he had sent the message and that he had waited up to tell him, that was another thing that Louis didn’t have to worry about. Bill hugged his son Goodnight and ruffled Horatio’s hair as he left them both in the kitchen and went off up to bed.
Louis rummaged around the cupboards for some food as he realised that he wouldn’t be going to sleep tonight at all, he was too worked up and excited to even think of sleeping and as he looked up at Horatio, who was eating a packet of crisps and dancing slightly on the spot that he was standing on, he realised that Horatio wouldn’t be sleeping either.
“Let’s grab some food and go upstairs. I don’t want to disturb anyone by talking loudly down here.”” Louis suggested to Horatio, who nodded and grabbed for a large bottle of drink and two glasses and Louis grabbed for some crisps, biscuits and anything else he could get his hands on.
"So, do you feel any different?" Horatio asked Louis.
Louis stared up at the ceiling as he thought about his answer.
"I'm not sure, it doesn't really feel real, and it feels a bit like I'm dreaming." Louis told him. He turned to look at Horatio, who was lying next to him on the bed also looking up at the ceiling.
“I wish I could be there with Freya,” Louis stated.
“You could always break in,” Horatio suggested.
“Not sure I want to spend my daughter’s first night in this world, being escorted off of the hospital premises.”
“Yeah, you should probably hold off for a few days before going back to your criminal ways.”
Louis scoffed at Horatrio’s words, “I think I’m the more responsible out of the two of us.”
Horatio let out a laugh. “Yeah, that’s a good one. If getting your girlfriend knocked up at the tender age of sixteen isn’t responsible, I don’t know what is.”
“Hey, I’ll have you know I’m nearly seventeen,” Louis said in defence, “in less than two weeks.”
“I can’t believe that you’re nearly seventeen and you have a daughter. I’m already seventeen and I can barely stop myself from eating dessert instead of dinner.” Horatio said as he shook his head, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to look after a kid so young.
“Well, you’re seventeen and you have a girlfriend. Speaking of which, when did you ask her out?”
“Actually, she asked me.”
“When?” Louis asked in shock, he was sure that Molly wouldn’t be brave enough to ask Horatio out, but she had surprised him.
“When I found out Freya was in labour, I rushed over to Molly’s. When I got there she interrupted what I was going to tell her by saying that if she didn’t ask me out now, she’d lose the courage to do so.”
“I assume that you said yes,” Louis said with a smile.
“Of course I did. Although I’ve got to say you having a baby kind of stole the attention away from it all. You may have stolen our thunder a bit.”
“I apologise for our selfishness.” Louis laughed.
“At least I’ll always know how long I’ve been going out with Molly for, if I forget I’ll just think of how old Samantha is and it’ll basically be the same amount of time.”
“I like that you’ll remember your Goddaughters age, but not how long you’ve been dating my cousin.”
Horatio smiled at Louis. Before they looked at the ceiling again in silence, Horatio grabbed for a cookie and bit into it.
“Do you feel like a dad yet?” Horatio asked Louis after he had swallowed his mouthful of food.
“I’m not sure, how do you think I should feel?”
Horatio shrugged, “Do you have any sudden need to tell corny and cheesy jokes? A need to dance weirdly and embarrassing, or wear a cardigan?”
“How many dads do you know that wear cardigans?”
“Well, not your dad, of course, because he’s cool enough to wear a leather jacket. Maybe that’s what you should do whilst you’re waiting for visiting hours, trying to decide what kind of dad you’ll be.”
“I was hoping to just go with the flow really; I’m not sure what kind of dad I want to be.” Louis told him, realising that he probably should have put some thought into this, he didn’t want to turn out to be a horrible dad.
“I’ve already decided that I’m going to be a cool uncle. You know, buy her lots of toys, and give her lots of sweets.” Horatio told him, interrupting Louis’s thoughts about how he was clearly going to be failing as a dad.
“I’m not sure I approve of the sweets part.”
“Ah, so you’re going to be one of those parents.”
“You mean a parent that’s thinking of the wellbeing of her teeth.”
“See, you’ll be a good dad,” Horatio told him as he yawned.
“I really hope so.” Louis said as he yawned as well.
Louis waited agitatedly in the waiting room of the hospital, looking at his watch and counting down the minutes until he could visit Freya and Samantha. He cursed himself for missing the first visiting hours; both Horatio and he had fallen asleep and he had woken up about an hour ago. Louis rushed up here as soon as he could, with the help of Horatio, and was now sitting here with guilt filling him. He couldn’t believe that he had overslept and missed the first visiting hours, he hoped that someone had come to see Freya and she hadn’t been alone.
When the Healer had come to let Louis know that visiting hours had begun, a bit early Louis noted, but he figured she felt sorry for him, he rushed to the room that the Healer had said that Freya had been moved to.
When he entered the room, he noticed that it was a ward filled with other mothers and their babies, he looked around the room and noticed Freya instantly, he rushed over to her and saw that she was smiling at him. He partially closed the curtain around Freya’s bed to give them some privacy from the other people who were staring at them, it made Louis feel slightly uncomfortable.
“I am so sorry that I didn’t come earlier, I fell asleep,” he said after going over to Freya and kissing her. “How are you?”
“That’s fine, Louis. I’m alright, still in pain and I feel like I can’t stop crying, but the Healer said that was normal.” Freya told him, Louis nodded before going over to the cot that his daughter was in, she was awake and looking around. Louis picked her up gently, terrified that he was going to drop her and slowly took a seat in the free chair next to Freya’s bed.
“Did you not want to hold her?” Louis asked Freya, who was watching him. She gave a small shrug before answering him.
“I didn’t want to disturb her, she seemed quite happy. Besides, I was too worried to start picking her up; I didn’t want to hurt her.” Freya told him.
“I have that feeling too; she’s so tiny I’m worried that I’ll break her or something.” Louis stated, “Did you want to hold her for a while?”
Freya shook her head, “No, it’s alright, she’s seems quite happy with her daddy.”
Louis grinned as he looked down at his daughter; she was blinking up at him and Louis could see her beautiful brown eyes staring up at him. “Did the Healers say when you could go home?” Louis asked Freya.
“They want to do a few more tests on Samantha because she was early, but if they come back fine, we should be able to go home at some point tonight.” Freya told him softly, “I can’t wait to get out of here.”
“Are the other mums nice?” Louis asked, wondering if the other mums had spoken to Freya at all, maybe kept her company when Louis couldn’t be here earlier, after all they were all in the same boat with their newborn babies.
“Not really, they all look at me weirdly and I can tell that they’re judging me for being so young.”
“Don’t listen to them; they don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s not like you’re alone doing this, you’re going to be a better mum than any of them put together.”
Freya gave a small smile at his words, “You have to say that,” she told him.
“And I mean it.” Louis told her.
Freya grabbed for a cup on the side and took a sip from it, before offering it to Louis who took it gratefully; careful to make sure Samantha wasn’t going to fall as he had a drink himself.
“My dad said that he sent your parents another letter last night,” Louis told her as he handed the cup back to her, Freya put it back on the side.
“I know. They came up this morning to see me.” Freya told him.
“That’s great,” Louis stated, genuinely happy, he knew that the fact that Freya’s parents had made an effort to come and see her could mean the start of them accepting this. “What did they say?”
Freya gave another shrug, “Just asked how I was really, and had a hug with Samantha, we had a small talk about getting back into contact and sorting things out.”
“I knew that they would come around eventually, that’s really great Freya, we could really use their support and help with this, and it’s not going to be easy.” Louis said looking back down at Samantha and smiling at her. “Your nanny and granddad obviously couldn’t resist a face this cute.” He raised his arms up so that he could place a small kiss on his daughter's head.
Louis didn’t notice the look that crossed Freya’s face that told him there was more to the story and that she was holding something back from him. She made to open her mouth after deliberating about something, but Louis turned to look at her again with a wide smile and it stopped her short.
“I can’t believe she’s got so much hair already,” Louis told her as he nodded down at Samantha, Freya looked down at Samantha and the blonde hair that was on her head, and she gave a smile. “And it’s blonde, not ginger. Just like her daddy and mummy when she’s not been changing her hair colour.”
“Hey,” Freya said, hitting him lightly on the shoulder. “I haven’t changed the colour of my hair since I found out I was pregnant.”
“Did you see that Samantha? You need to protect your daddy.” Louis stage whispered to his daughter, who was still looking up at him, opening and closing her mouth before looking around. “But once mummy’s not in the room I’ll tell you all of her secrets.”
“And I shall be telling her about you and Uncle Horatio’s special friendship.” Freya said with a smile at him.
Louis pretended to gulp and look scared. “Maybe we’ll keep Mummy’s secrets a secret for a while longer.”
