Sparks Fly

James stood staring blankly at the large white headstone, his face as emotionless as the stone on which his gaze was upon. His deep hazel eyes took in the curved letters engraved into the front, names so familiar, so meaningful.

He felt empty, couldn’t believe how something that seemed so trivial, could cause him so much pain. Ageing never seemed like a big deal, his parents being older than most never bothered him until now, until this moment when he felt weakened by it.

He turned and saw his best friend’s face, the tears stains that rested on his cheeks. He wanted to comfort Sirius, just as Sirius wanted to comfort him, but it seemed impossible. James walked past him, Sirius gently clapping him on the back, making him pause so Sirius could hold him.

It had been 3 days and yet he still felt numb, he hadn’t cried, he hadn’t spoken, hadn’t let Lily near him.

James pulled away and turned, walking away from the resting place of so many brave souls. James disapparated quickly to his childhood home wanting to be alone, unable to help the feeling of anger at his father’s death that was filling him. One moment they had sat there by his mother’s bed as she faded away, then merely a few hours after he had lost his mother he found his father, still sitting by the bed holding her hand, gone.

James walked to the paintings of his parents, still unable to comprehend that they were both gone from his life. He knew now that they had been buried that the portraits that had sat still for the last couple of years since they had been painted would come alive.

‘Mum, Dad,’ James said gently as his parents eyes slid open.

The way you move is like a full on rainstorm
And I'm a house of cards
You say my name for the first time, baby, and I
Fall in love in an empty bar

‘James…’ Lily whispered as she watched from the shadows as he spoke to his parents desperately. She delicately stepped forward, her bare feet making no sound as she approached her boyfriend. She locked eyes with his mother, who smiled warmly, her eyes full of love as Lily slipped her arms around his waist.

She felt his tense back relax, as he breathed in her familiar scent. As she squeezed him against her momentarily, before resting her head on his back, for the first time since his parents’ deaths, James Potter cried, in the arms of Lily Evans.

‘James,’ Lily whispered as she moved onto her tiptoe to kiss the back of his neck, showing him that she was there and that she loved him.

James turned within her grasp, swallowing sharply as she brushed her fingers against his damp cheeks.

‘I know that everything seems a little lost but it will be ok. I promise, I’ll help however I can.’

‘You just did,’ James said taking her hands in his. As he looked at Lily, the devotion evident in her eyes as she smiled supportably, an idea began to appear. How had he not thought about it before?

James looked back over at his parents, at the smiles that now expanded across their faces as Lily squeezed his fingers gently.

‘I love you, Lily,’ James said gently before hugging her tightly to him.

‘I love you too.’

And in that moment James felt security rush through him, his parents gaze upon his back, he knew as long as he had Lily Evans in his arms he was safe.

He knew right then and there that he wanted her in his life forever and waiting wasn’t an option anymore.

And you stood there in front of me just
Close enough to touch
Close enough to hope you couldn't see
What I was thinking of

‘Prongs how are you?’ Sirius asked gently looking at his best friend the day after the funeral for the Potters.

‘I’m ok, you?’

‘Me too.’

‘I need your help though.’

‘With what?’ Sirius asked looking at James carefully before grabbing a bag of muggle chips from the kitchen cupboard.

‘I want to propose to Lily,’ James replied pulling out the small velvet box.

‘Yeah, it’s the perfect time.’

‘You’re just out of school, mate, you guys are living together, why not wait?’

‘Because she is everything,’ Sirius smiled gently at his best friend seeing the sudden light that filled his features in speaking of Lily in such a way.

‘I know,’ James smirked at Sirius realising that he was trying to get him to focus on the power that Lily had over him and how it made him feel.

‘So how do you want to do it?’

‘I don’t know something simple maybe.’

‘What about a muggle hot air balloon ride at sunrise?’

‘I like it,’ James said smirking as he clapped his brother on the back.

Drop everything now
Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain

James sat wringing his hands, looking at Dumbledore fearfully.

‘What do you mean; you don’t know where she is?’

‘She never made it to her shift last night and no one has seen her today.’

‘Then where is she?’ James said standing up, knocking the chair he had been sitting on backwards. And then he remembered the promise they had made, that if ever they were in trouble they were to meet at Lily’s parents’ house after it was safe to come out.
‘James…’ Dumbledore said urgently.

Without another word James flew into the green flames, glancing momentarily at Dumbledore before he was whisked back to the house he shared with Lily. He disapparated quickly arriving in an alley off Spinner’s End, his heartbeat pounding against his eardrums as he prayed with everything he had that she would be here.

James looked around urgently, his wand gripped in his pocket. He looked up as raindrops splattered against his face, mixing with the panicked tears. His eyes looked around, taking everything around him in before spotting a distant light moving towards him.

He had never felt sicker than he had in the moment when Dumbledore had summoned him to his office at Hogwarts to tell him the news of Lily’s disappearance.

'Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
Get me with those green eyes, baby
As the lights go down
Something that'll haunt me when you're not around

He walked tentatively towards the light, his hope rising ever so slightly as he spotted what looked like red hair glowing in the wand light.

‘Lily?’ James cried, feeling emptiness well up inside.

‘James?’ He felt love wash over him as he heard her voice forcing him to run towards her. His feet pounded against the concrete path, his wand placed back into his pocket carefully.

‘Lils!’ James yelled, excitement etched in his voice as Lily fell into his arms. He held her close to him as he spun her around, her feet off the ground, her wand in hand lighting up their faces.

‘I knew you’d remember,’ Lily said sobbing gently as her feet touched the ground again. James placed his hands gently on either side of her face as he kissed her deeply.

‘What happened Lils, where’d you go?’

‘I was being followed, and then on my way to St Mungo’s last night they came out and fought me and I got away but there was still someone following me so I disapparated all over the UK until I finally lost them somewhere in Wales and I could make it here safely.’

‘Oh god, I’m so sorry I wasn’t there…’

‘It’s not your fault,’ Lily said closing her eyes as she hugged him, her head resting on his chest as he stroked her back gently.

'Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
So reach out open handed
And lead me out to that floor
Well, I don't need more paper lanterns

She pulled backwards, opening her eyes and looking at him carefully her bright emerald green eyes captivating his attention away from his terrified thoughts. His thoughts could now drift to the arrangements he had been making at the time of Dumbledore’s patronus, for that perfect proposal, wondering if it was a sign that it shouldn’t go ahead.

Lily flicked her head to one side still feeling as though eyes were upon her not knowing that Severus Snape was now watching her after having heard about the events of last night. James held the edges of her face in the palm of his hands, as he leaned forward kissing her forehead, his mind on nothing now other than the beautiful eyes that could grip him so quickly it seemed impossible.

Lily leaned forward in James’ arms and kissed his neck gently, feeling his pulse beating against her lips. He quickly found her lips, kissing her tenderly before pulling away and taking her hand, squeezing it gently.

‘Let’s go home,’ James said as he started walking, Lily’s hand still firmly in his arms as he disapparated

Take me down, baby bring on the movie star
'Cause my heart is beating fast
And you are beautiful I could wait patiently
But I really wish you would

James woke up early, stretching, rolling onto his side, looking down at Lily, sleeping. Her red hair was sprayed out on the pillow, her lips parted as she groaned softly rolling over, bumping into James.

‘Morning beautiful,’ James said softly kissing her forehead. ‘I love you Lily.’

‘I love you too, James.’ Lily said gently as she pulled him close, kissing him deeply. She pulled on his arms until he was lying on top of her. She winked at him, cheekily grinning, her green eyes alive. ‘You always have my back.’

‘Of course,’ James said kissing her again and holding her tightly against his body, feeling a security that only Lily could provide.

‘You give me hope,’ Lily said as she kissed his neck.

‘You give me laughter,’ she said nibbling on his lip.

‘You give me strength,’ Lily mumbled rolling so she was on top of his body, straddling the love of her life.

‘You give shivers, that I’ve never felt before,’ Lily said as she removed her singlet, pulling James up so he was sitting up, his skin against hers.

‘You give me everything I could want and more. Now prove it,’ Lily said laughing as James moved quickly so she was lying back on the bed, grinning from ear to ear.

‘Oh I’ll prove it,’ James said as he growled kissing her neck as Lily squealed happily.

Drop everything now
Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain

‘No, none of them are good enough,’ James said slamming his fists into the glass cabinet, frustrated.

‘Come on, mate, we’ll find the perfect ring,’ Sirius said yawning, bored.

‘Nope, it’s useless!’

‘Let’s go get a drink and start again,’ Sirius suggested and James nodded defeated.

They sat down at a muggle pub, ordering their drinks and some food. They ate and finished a few drinks, just chatting easily, Remus Lupin joining them after a little while.

‘Have you thought about designing it yourself?’ Remus asked, staying calmer than Sirius as James complained about not been able to find the perfect ring.

‘Designing it?’

‘Yeah, then you get exactly what you want.’

‘Hmm, that could work,’ James said beginning to look excited. ‘Ok I’ll see you lot later.’

‘I can’t believe he’s proposing to her already,’ Sirius said exhausted by his friends antics.

‘I’m not really surprised, he finally won her, he’s not going to let her go easily,’ Remus said easily.

'Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
Get me with those green eyes, baby
As the lights go down
Something that'll haunt me when you're not around

James had spent hours drawing and had finally come up with the perfect ring. Something he could be proud to give Lily Evans, the girl he never thought he would be able to call his.

It was 2 o’clock in the morning and James finally left Potter Manor heading to his and Lily’s home. He tip toed into the room, stripping off his clothes and diving under the blankets. James felt a weight lift as he pulled Lily close against him.

‘Hey, I was wondering where you’d gotten to,’ Lily said as she mumbled sleepily.

‘I’ll always come home to you, my darling,’ James said kissing the back of her neck before closing his eyes and breathing in her beautiful familiarity.

'Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
I run my fingers through your hair
And watch the lights go out
Just keep your beautiful eyes on me

James woke the next morning, quietly leaving the bed, smiling to himself as he watched her sleeping. He busied himself in the kitchen, making a range of foods hoping they tasted alright.

‘What are you doing?’ Lily asked leaning against the door frame, smiling, running her hand through her hair, sending it billowing down her back.

‘Lily!’ James yelled, his face frustrated as he knocked the glass of orange juice off the bench. ‘Go back to bed!’

‘Let me help you.’

‘No, bed!’ James yelled distractedly. Lily chuckled as she walked from the room. She set herself up, grabbing a book, glancing at the clock.

20 minutes later James appeared tray in hand.

‘Hello there handsome,’ Lily said as James placed the tray in front of her, climbing into bed beside her. ‘Wow, look at all this.’

‘There’s coffee and juice. Toast, eggs and bacon. Pancakes with either maple syrup or pieces of banana and honey. And of course baked beans.’

Lily beamed leaning to the side and kissing James with every emotion she felt for him.

‘You still manage to astound me every day.’ And they ate it all enjoying the peaceful moment they had amongst the horrible war that as raging up around them.

Gonna strike this match tonight
Lead me up the staircase
Won't you whisper soft and slow
I'd love to hate it
But you make it like a fireworks show

‘I have to pop out, sort a few things out, but relax, put your feet up and I’ll see you this afternoon.’

‘Ok baby,’ Lily said kissing him hard on the mouth before turning towards the filling bathtub, book in hand.

James changed quickly, heading out of the house and towards the best jewellery store he could find. He handed over the design and the price that they wanted, not caring about the money at all.

‘We’ll have it ready for you in a week.’

‘A week?’

‘Yes, Mr Potter. You’re ring will be perfect if we can spend the appropriate time on it.’

‘Ok, thank you.’

James relaxed slightly turning getting ready to prepare the rest of his perfect proposal.

Drop everything now
Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain

James took Lily’s hand leading her from the car, smiling at the movement of her eyeballs as she excitedly waited for the big reveal. James and Lily pulled up to a stop.

‘Can I open my eyes now?’

‘Not yet,’ James whispered as he kissed Lily’s cheek gently. ‘Open.’

Lily did as she was told, her emerald green eyes seeming to explode as she took in where she was. She turned her mouth open in awe. They were standing in a field, flowers surrounding them wherever she looked.

‘Oh my god,’ Lily said exhaling heavily. She spun around her eyes trying to take everything in. She turned breathing heavily, looking at James who seemed nervous. ‘Baby?’

James looked at her for a moment, silently looking at her emerald green eyes alive and dancing as her smiled expanded across her face. He slipped his hand behind her neck, pulling her face closer to his. He watched as her hair tickled at his fingers, her lips parted slightly.

'Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
Get me with those green eyes, baby
As the lights go down
Something that'll haunt me when you're not around

James took her hands, breathing deeply, his eyes staying on hers as he got up the nerves to start.

‘Lily Evans, you are the definition of perfection, everything about you; your stunning eyes that I can see clearly even when I close my eyes, your insanely gorgeous hair and brilliant laugh, you’re such a kind and amazing person and I count myself lucky every moment since you entered my life. I love you so much and desperately want to wake up by your side for the rest of my life, spoiling you at every chance I get.’

Lily was breathing heavily to equal the man before her, Tears filling her eyes, a smile creeping at the corners of her mouth as he got down on one knee, turning her hand over.

‘Will you marry me, Lily and wake up in my arms every morning of forever?’

Lily beamed, happy tears filling her eyes as he slipped the ring he’d thought so hard about onto her slender finger.

‘Of course,’ Lily said tilting her head to one side as tears trickled down her cheeks. ‘Yes, I’ll marry you, every day.’

‘Oh thank you,’ James said relieved as he picked her up off her feet, spinning her around. Lily’s feet found the ground again, leaning in to kiss her new fiancé.

Lily looked down at her finger and gasped. It was the most incredible piece of jewellery she’d laid her eyes on. It was a silver band with two separate bands twisting their way around one another until they came together at the top on either side of a shining square diamond.

‘You make me so happy,’ Lily said holding the sides of his face gently in her soft hands as she leaned forward kissing the tip of his nose before kissing him on the mouth.

‘You make everything make sense, Lils.’

'Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
Sparks fly, baby smile, sparks fly

‘To James and Lily!’ Sirius yelled, the pub full of all their friends and mentors, Order members and family.

‘To James and Lily,’ they chimed watching as James looked down at the girl beside him, his eyes solely on her.

Sirius watched and smiled, he understood now why his best friend had proposed. He loved the girl in his arms like no one could understand. He grinned hoping that the happiness that they caused everyone around them to have stayed strong through this war, giving them the strength to fight for the fabulous people they shared their lives with.
