George paused outside the Seventh Year Girls’ dormitory. He had no idea what he would say to her. He loved her so much and part of him just wanted to burst into the room and tell her everything she meant to him and then never let her go.
Just as he prepared to knock he couldn’t help overhearing their conversation.
“Stop moping, Hermione,” he heard Ginny say.
“Can you please make up your mind? Between you and your brother I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing,” Hermione said exasperatedly and George couldn’t help but smile just at the sound of her voice.
“You’re going to have to specify which brother,” Ginny said. “I kind of have a few.”
“Fred. He’s telling me to quit the act and openly admit I love and miss George with all my heart and then you’re telling me to stop being sad. What am I supposed to do?” she asked and sighed.
“I didn’t say don’t be sad, I said don’t mope. You sitting there feeling sorry for yourself isn’t going to help. You said you know where he is why don’t you go get his sorry butt and drag him back here,” Ginny told her.
“Um he ran away because of me. I doubt he really wants to see me,” Hermione said and George frowned.
“He didn’t run away from you,” Ginny told her softly. “He’s just confused.”
“So I’ve been told,” she said.
He waited another few minutes debating what to do but finally the need to just see her again won.
He knocked on the door, his heart pounding in his chest so much that he had to look down and make sure he couldn’t see it through his jumper.
“Come in,” Ginny called and he pushed the door open and stood in the door way.
“Hi,” he said breathlessly.
Both girls looked at him with wide eyes and Hermione had to blink several times to make sure he was still there and she wasn’t just imagining it.
“George,” Hermione breathed. Her voice had sounded more like a whimper than anything else.
She stood staring at him blankly and slowly a smile formed on her face and it grew wider as she watched him. He found himself grinning back at her. She strode towards him but as she drew closer something seemed to dawn on her and there was a dangerous flash in her eyes. She stopped before him not hugging him as she had expected herself to do only a second ago.
“Don’t you dare smile at me, George Weasley!” she screamed at him, rage and hurt burning in her eyes all of a sudden. “You have some nerve to walk in here like that you idiot! Who do you think you are?” she yelled and shoved him in his chest furiously.
“Hermione...I...” he began with pleading eyes and reached out for her.
“Don’t touch me!” she shrieked her voice shrill. “Don’t you ever touch me! Why don’t you just leave again? Well? I wish you would! I hate you! You know that? Hate. You have no right to just walk back in like that. Get away from me,” she screeched at the top of her lungs as angry tears spilled from her eyes and she pushed him again but more forceful this time. Once he was clear of the doorway she slammed the door shut with so much power that it rattled.
George gaped at the door in front of him. Whatever it was that he had expected when he saw her that was definitely not it. Tears stung at his eyes and his chest pained him suddenly, he never wanted to hurt her.
“Hermione!” Ginny yelled. “What the hell was that?”
“I don’t know,” Hermione groaned. “He left Ginny...how am I supposed to just forgive that?”
“Hermione,” Ginny murmured softly as she hugged her best friend who had begun sobbing. “You need to talk to him.”
“I know,” she nodded and she wiped her eyes furiously with the back of her hand. Ginny said no more but walked across to the door and opened it slowly.
“It’s so good to see you,” Ginny breathed as she hugged her brother tightly.
“You too, Gin,” he mumbled into her hair before letting her go. He held her at arm’s length for a moment and she smiled sadly at him.
“Just talk to her,” she whispered before disappearing down the stairs.
George watched Hermione for a moment, standing just outside the door. Bravely he took a few steps forward until he was stood in the room less than two metres away from her.
“Hermione I...” he began but she launched herself towards him before he could finish.
She began pounding her fists into his chest in a powerful anger that seemed to use strength from deep inside her. “You idiot! You stupid, inconsiderate, selfish idiot! How could you? How could you leave? You are so thoughtless and insensitive!” she screamed continuing to hammer her fists against him allowing the tears to stream down her face as she did. “You left me! You walked right out and you didn’t even look back! I’ve been crying myself to sleep because of your pathetic, insensitive stupidity!” She continued yelling insults at him and it wasn’t long before her energy began to drain and both her and George could feel it as the punches softened and became less frequent. “You don’t care! You pretend you do but you don’t! You’re just a horrible, thoughtless idiot,” she shouted though her voice cracked towards the end as she landed her last punch and slumped against him in desperate sobs so he was supporting her weight.
She cried harder into his chest, “I missed you so much.” She spoke with a small, weak voice that was below a whisper and it could only show how fragile she was on the inside. He could feel her entire body trembling and the heartache and complete misery building within him made him shake with the effort not to break down too.
“I missed you too,” he murmured into her thick curls and inhaled deeply. He had even missed the way she smelt. “Hermione,” he whispered and pulled back enough to see her face. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Hermione looked up at him having finally stopped crying. “I think maybe we should sit down,” George told her and they sat on the edge of her bed.
“George I don’t know if I can do this...” Hermione admitted moving to stand. “This is just too much for me and I- I don’t know if I can handle this. I’m sorry but I think it’s my turn to walk away,” she said and stood but hesitated when he placed a warm hand on her arm.
“Hermione please,” he begged. “Just hear me out.” She sighed and bit her lip but allowed him to continue and sunk beside him.
“I know what I did was wrong and by now you know why I did what I did and we both know my confliction doesn’t justify the fact that I left,” he said. “The truth is I was scared and I ended up hurting you, the person I care most about and there is nothing I regret more than that,” he told her earnestly. “Ron came to see me earlier and he said that he wanted us to be happy. And Ron was the only thing stopping me from just being with you.”
Hermione looked up at him with eyes filled with tears but there was hope behind them. “I love you so much Hermione and I know I hurt you, more than words can say and more than your actions can show. I acted like an idiot but if there is any way you can forgive me, there’s nothing more I want than to just be with you,” he spoke with so much emotion, anxiety and hope.
“What are you saying, George?” she asked softly and he could feel more than hear the hope in her voice.
“I’m saying that I’m in love with you Hermione and all I can do for now is hope and pray that I didn’t miss my chance because you are the only thing I’m certain that I want for my future,” he told her seriously. “And if I’ve messed this up I will never be able to forgive myself.”
When she didn’t speak he hesitated before continuing. “I know I shouldn’t just expect you to forgive me and I know that all the trust we had between us, even just as friends may be gone now because of me and that kills me inside. But I just want the chance to rebuild it. To show you that you’re everything I want and need to be happy. I want to make you smile every single day and I want you to feel loved and I want you to know how much you mean to me and how irreplaceable you are. I never want to hurt you again, Hermione, and I swear I never will. I’m saying all of this now and I know that they’re just words but I want to prove it to you. I’ve said everything I wanted to say and it’s not what I think you want to hear but what I feel and what I want you to know. Words can’t express what you mean to me but there are three that sum it up pretty well,” he told her aware that by this point he was rambling.
George spoke slowly and clearly stressing ever syllable of the words he spoke with all his emotions pouring into them. She needed to know and to understand and until she did he wouldn’t be able to rest. “I love you.”
“George,” she whispered breathlessly as every emotion she had ever felt towards George battled against the resentment and hurt from the past few weeks.
“Yes?” he asked and the optimism shone in his eyes. She leant forward and pressed her lips against his own softly. Just as she began to pull away a warm hand placed itself on the side of her face gently and held her there as he kissed her back. When they finally pulled apart she noticed George’s teary eyes and smiled.
“I love you too,” she told him tenderly.
George took both of her small hands in his own and smiled at their warmth. “I’m sorry,” he told her once more. “I promise you I will spend the rest of my life making these two weeks up to you.”
“Kiss me again and we’ll call it even,” she told him playfully. He leant forward and brushed his lips against her own and grinned at her.
“Finally,” he mumbled as he took in the sight of her flushed cheeks and the way her deep brown eyes glittered. “I waited too long for this.”
“It was worth the wait,” Hermione assured him as he rested his forehead against hers before pulling her into a hug.
“Don’t expect me to ever let go now,” he chuckled.
“I would never ask you to,” she smiled and he stood, offering her a hand. She took it and he laced his fingers through her own as he pulled her up only to wrap his arms around her once more. “I’m sorry for attacking you,” she mumbled and suddenly any anger she had held had melted away and she could barely remember a reason to be mad at him. None of it mattered anymore. He came back. For her. He came back for her and the thought made her feel weightless.
“I may have deserved it,” he said and tucked a loose curl behind her ear. “Gorgeous.” Hermione blushed and smiled shyly at him.
“So tell me,” he said trying to sound as casual as possible. “Does this mean you’re my girlfriend?”
“No I just want to be friends that’s why I kissed you and told you I loved you,” Hermione said sarcastically.
“What? Really? Because I thought we could just get married right now,” he joked.
“Let’s not get too carried away,” she laughed and hugged him.
“How can I not? I have the most beautiful girl in the world in my arms,” he told her.
“Alright you can stop the charm now, I already agreed to be your girlfriend,” Hermione said.
“The charm doesn’t come with an off switch ‘Mione,” he chuckled. “Plus I don’t remember you saying you would be my girlfriend. I remember a much uncalled for, sarcastic response.”
“Well maybe you should ask again then,” Hermione suggested and there was a playful air to her voice.
“Hermione Jean Granger I love you with all my heart. Will you be my girlfriend?” he asked her.
“Hmmm I’m not entirely convinced you want me to be,” she smirked. George smiled and shook his head at her, dropping to his knees in front of her.
“I’m on my knees,” he said and gestured to himself. “And there’s nothing I want more than for you to be mine. Please say you’ll be my girlfriend?”
“God George, there was no need to beg. The answer was always going to be yes,” she said and smiled down at him, ruffling his hair. George took her hand and kissed the back of it.
“No gesture is too much for my angel,” he said and winked at her not moving from his knees.
“Oh get up you clown,” she laughed but blushed all the same. “I reckon there are some people that we have to talk to.”
“I suppose if we must,” he joked as she tugged him out of the room.
“Alright wait here’s what we’re going to do,” George whispered to her before they rounded the corner into the Common Room. He briefly explained his elaborate scheme and Hermione laughed and nodded.
“You’re so bad George Weasley,” she chuckled and nudged him playfully.
“Ready?” he asked her.
“Ready,” she laughed and took a deep breath to compose herself and stormed into the common room.
“I told you to stay the hell away from me!” she screamed at him as he followed her.
“But please Hermione...” he began.
“Do you really think I care? Do you think sorry makes up for the fact you left me?” she yelled.
“You’re lucky I haven’t killed you yet,” she shouted. “You’re just a careless jerk coming back in and expecting me to just be happy!”
“Hermione calm down,” Fred said and leapt to his feet to stand between Hermione and George.
“Stay out of this Fred,” she snapped at him and pushed him back stepping closer to George. She raised her hand and slapped him across his face making it look and sound harder than it actually had been.
“Hermione,” Ginny gasped as George clutched the side of his face looking at her in shock. The entire common room fell silent.
Neither George nor Hermione could hold back at that moment and burst out laughing.
Fred seemed to be the first one to catch on and his eyes widened in shock. “You were joking...” he mumbled. “You idiots! You made up!” he yelled and shoved them both playfully before hugging them.
“Who knew you two could act so well,” Harry chuckled and hugged them both too. Whilst hugging George he whispered a warning, “You ever hurt her again and I swear to God I will kill you.”
George had never really been intimidated by Harry. Ever. But he did not doubt for a second what Harry would do to protect Hermione. “Never. I promise,” George told him genuinely.
“I can’t believe you guys did that,” Ginny exclaimed. “I thought you really hit him!”
“She did, what are you talking about?” George chuckled. “And it really hurt.”
As talking resumed in the Common Room George and Hermione looked over to Ron. Hermione bit her lip and glanced anxiously at George who nodded at her and she walked towards him. She took his hand from where he was sat and pulled him up.
“Thank you,” she told him and tears threatening to fall from her eyes as she pulled him into a tight hug. “You will always be my best friend and my brother.”
“I’m sorry for everything I’ve done,” he told her but didn’t let go. “I want you to be happy now.”
“I am,” she told him sincerely and pulled back and held George’s hand. “Happier than I’ve ever been,” she said though more to George than Ron.
“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” the chants started in the common room and Hermione blushed and laughed. She wrapped her arms around his neck as his made his way around her waist. They smiled at each other before leaning in and pushing their lips against each other. The Common Room erupted in cheers and applause and the couple pulled apart, laughing and smiling. There was a collective ‘aw’ from the room and Hermione sighed contentedly as George hugged her.
“Finally,” Fred grinned watching the couple as he put an arm around Angelina.
“Double wedding?” Angelina asked jokingly.
“Wouldn’t that be funny,” Fred smiled at the thought just happy that his twin was happy. “It would be too soon for them though.”
“At least they’re together now,” Angelina said.
“I think we’ve been waiting for it as long as they have,” Fred chuckled as they watched them.
So...? What did you think? Sorry again for the wait but it really was out of my control and I know that if I had written in that period the quality and content really would have suffered. I hope you enjoyed the chapter and I can't wait to hear from you all.
Thank you so much for reading and all the lovely reviews so far! Jenna :)
