A/n very blackinnon heavy this chapter, hope you enjoy (and I know, another long update… I’ve really struggled to find the time)
“I cannot believe you did not check the time!” Marlene whined five minutes later as they paced quickly down the corridors in the dead of the night, the corridors filled with shadows and only the sound of snoring portraits could be heard.
Rolling his eyes, Sirius gave her the infamous Black smirk “How is this my fault exactly?”
“You should have checked the time” Marlene replied back over her shoulder like a five year old having a temper tantrum “If we get told of for going out after hours I will not stop to curse you to hell and back”
“Don’t worry, old Minny’ll only give us a detention and maybe deduct a few points at the most, if we get caught and thankfully I’m here so we won’t” Sirius laughed trying to catch up with Marlene who was now halfway down the corridor ahead of him.
“That is alright for you to say, you get detentions every other day!”
“Hey! No fair. Why are you so eager to get away from me anyway?”
“I do not like being out after dark”
“Why?” Sirius asked interested. He knew for sure that a twelve year old Marlene used to follow them out of the common room, wondering where they disappeared to under the invisibility cloak when they ventured of to the kitchens.
“stop” Marlene suddenly whispered as he was just about to turn around a corridor but was caught around the stomach by a sudden arm “There is voices” she shivered abruptly, peering her head around the wall.
“Remus” A voice that, to Sirius, sounded strangely familiar “As much as I hate to admit it, Potters right, you can’t keep running off whenever Peter mentions something, you know him, he’s a blabber mouth, doesn’t think before he says anything.”
“Lily please you don’t understand”
“Don’t understand?” Lily said in a tone that suggested she was not impressed. From around the corner Sirius could just picture the eyebrows raising “Remus… I- I do know what you... uh… are”
There was a moment of stunned silence. Sirius looked down at Marlene who seemed confused but was listening intently.
“You do?” Remus questioned.
“Well yes, I mean I’ll be honest I first got the idea from Severus, but I thought he was mad, I kept trying to tell him that you were just visiting your gran in hospital. I mean who would believe that, but I still read into it, and the more I noticed the certain traits you have and your physical appearance I started to wonder that what he was saying was true, then I mentioned it to Marls. Also, I figured that the whole Black drama was related”
Marlene was quick to look up at him trying to think back to the obvious conversation her and Lily had, but couldn’t so instead gave him a questioning stare “what happened?” She mouthed “Is Remus ok?”
Sirius hadn’t really planned on Marlene finding out the whole story of what happened to Snape, it seemed like there was no point, and what would happen if Marlene stopped talking to him to? Who would he hang around with now, with the shortly approaching Christmas holidays it was unlikely that he and James would make up by then, and by the sounds of it Remus was still angry.
“I’m a monster Lily”
“No.” Lily stated firmly “despite everything, you are not a monster”
“Sirius made me feel like one, I could have killed Snape” Remus let out, a little whimper escaping his lips while Sirius closed his eyes not daring to look down at Marlene’s face, who he could only guess was the look of shock.
“I don’t know what Black was thinking sending Severus after you, he was foolish” Lily said in a matter-of-fact tone “but it wasn’t your fault it was his”
“I’m a werewolf Lily!”
In a swift move Sirius covered Marlene’s mouth with his hands to stop the gasp escaping her lips, gently pulling her back around the corner and into the shadows, out of sight.
“Marls…” Sirius began when he was sure no one could hear or see them.
“W-Wha-Why-uh” Marlene just about spluttered out, speechless, unsure of what to say “Why did you not tell me!”
“It wasn’t my secret to tell” Sirius let out as Marlene’s hands made contact with him, slapping him all over “ow, ow! Marlene!”
“You sent Snape straight for Remus when he was a werewolf, you fish-head! How could you?”
“Now, when you put it like that it does sound bad!” Sirius tried to calm her down, to make it seem less worse than it actually was. He didn’t want Marlene to hate him to.
Marlene’s face shifted from angry and opened mouthed to disappointed, her eyes burning into his “Why Sirius?”
“I-I don’t know” he shifted uncomfortably, stepping back as far as possible until his back hit the stone wall, he wanted to desperately get away.
“You knew” It wasn’t a question “and you still sent him anyway”
She began to turn away from him until Sirius caught her quickly “Please don’t hate me”
“I do not hate you” Marlene answered, tilting her head a little as though the idea of that was completely bizarre “Why would you think I hate you?”
“I don’t know” Sirius shrugged “James and the other lot do”
“No they don’t”
“Really, cause it bloody well looks like it” Sirius looked down soberly, refusing to stare her in the eyes while Marlene did the exact opposite.
“They are just upset with you, what I said before in the library still stands, they will forgive you. You were just an idiot, I think even you can push your ego aside on that one and agree with me” laughed Marlene.
The two stared at each other tenderly “We all make mistakes” Marlene sighed looking off into the distance before snapping out of it “Come on, we better get back to the common room. Corridors at night give me the creeps” breaking the silence and started to walk down the corridor while Sirius narrowed his eyes suspiciously until he realized just what was wrong.
“You’re still scared?” He said suddenly moving closer.
“The attack, on you and Mary”
“What about it?” Marlene said emotionless, though couldn’t mask the little shiver that escaped her.
“You don’t like to be out at night”
Marlene paused for a minute, not sure what to day but shook her head shortly “I am just scared of the dark” She defensively said, turning her back away from him again “Now can we please just get back to the common room”
“You weren’t scared when you were younger”
Marlene opened her mouth in disbelief “What makes you think that?”
“Oh come on! I noticed you, Mary and Lily wondering where we marauders went after hours. Following us” He teased, smiling a little “Did you ever actually figure out where we went?”
“Maybe” She played a long, eyebrows raised and her teeth biting on her tongue teasingly.
“Are you going to answer my question?”
“What question?” Marlene replied as though she couldn’t remember a thing.
“You’re still scared?”
“Can we not talk about this now” Marlene snapped turning around and darted down the corridor, refusing to turn around again. Sirius stood rooted on the spot, testing her “are you coming or not?”
“Depends, on whether you’re planning on talking or not”
Suddenly she came to a halt, he knew she wouldn’t go all the way up to the Gryffindor common rooms without him; she was an open book to him.
“Fine!” she said her back still turned on him, though Sirius couldn’t miss the cracked voice and the unmistakable sound of struggling to keep tears back “Yes, I am still afraid, and I have every right to be, Hogwarts is meant to be the safest place in the wizarding world, I mean, what if…” She slowly turned around, her eyes glistening with tears as she tried to steady her breath “what if Lily and Remus hadn’t turned up. What would have happened? Mary is so frightened she had to go home to muggle parents who can hardly protect her against magic, we could have lost Mary that night, And what happens when we leave school, where do we go? I do not want to be thrown into the middle of a war as soon as we do! I could not even stop a bunch of teenage wizards torturing Mary, what am I going to do in the real world, when we have to fight. So no I am not scared but completely terrified instead, and I am a cowered for being so”
Sirius stood awkwardly in the middle of the corridor whilst Marlene wiped her eyes on the back of her sleeve, though couldn’t stop the tears streaming down her face. He had never been good at comforting people, he’d always left that up to Remus. He wasn’t even sure what to say.
“um, you’re not a coward”
She began to giggle, her eyes still glazed with tears however “You really are terrible at reassuring”
“Come on, let’s go back to the common room” He smiled, breaking the distance between them and putting an arm around her as the two walked down the corridor together “We wouldn’t want you scared M.M.”
“Shut up you fish-head”
“What’s with calling everyone a fish-head?”
“I’m scared of fish too” She replied seriously, having to bite her lip to stop herself from laughing.
Sirius couldn’t help but chuckle at that.
