“Kat, you exited for this year?” James asks, leaning on my bedroom doorframe. I am Kat (it’s really Kathryn, but I hate that name), Potter. James is my twin brother. Today is September the first, and we’re starting out sixth year at Hogwarts.

“Yeah, I guess, can’t wait to see Sirius and Lily,” I reply. Sirius is our best friend ever, along with Remus and Peter.

"C'mon, you're going to be late for the train!" Mum calls from the kitchen.

"We're coming!" James calls back. I frantically chuck more things into my school trunk. I’m not that good with organization. I quickly check my reflection in the mirror; my dark brown hair up in a high pony tail, with a few curly strands falling down into my face. I don’t know how James and I are actually twins, we look almost nothing alike. He has black hair, I have brown. He has brown eyes, I have blue. He’s ugly, I'm gorgeous. Just kidding! He’s ugly and I'm alright.

James and I run down the stairs with our trunks in tow, only to find our mum waiting at the front door, arms crossed.

"Do you two seriously want to be late for your first day of sixth year?" Mum asks.

"Well, that's not exactly what I planned, but we can always skip a few classes," I say, grinning at my mum's agitated face.

“Now, where are my keys?” Mum mutters. She checks the bench top and her purse, but no luck.

“Just summon them!” I finally say. Mum is a witch, and so is our dad, but honestly, mum hardly ever uses magic. Something about ‘the neighbours getting suspicious’.

“Yes, you’re right. Now where’s my wand?”

“On the counter.”

“Oh, how silly of me. Thank you, James. Accio car keys!”
The car keys fly out of nowhere into mums hands, then we run out the door.

At a quarter to eleven, we arrive at Kings Cross station, walking over to platforms nine and ten. As we walk over, we catch sight of a certain someone with long auburn hair and piercing green eyes. James stares at her for about seven seconds, but then snaps back into reality and heads over to her.

"Hey Lily, how's my favourite little girl?" James asks, placing an arm around her shoulders.

"Hey!" Oh no he didn't. I am his favourite girl. Full stop. End of discussion.

"You too, Kat," James says, returning his attention to Lily as she shrugs his arm off her shoulder.

“Hi Lily,” I say as she reaches over to hug me. “How was your summer?”

“Oh, same as usual, but guess what?” she asks.

“What?” James and I asks at the same time.

“Petunia is getting married!” Lily exclaims. She doesn’t look at all happy for her sister, and I don’t blame her, I’ve heard the stories about Petunia. According to Lily, she’s selfish, cold, mean, obsessive, well you get the point.

“Who to?” I ask in disbelief. I cannot imagine what Lily described at Petunia getting married to someone.

“This slob called Vernon Dursley, comes over all the time,” Lily says disgustedly.

That sounds more like it.

After a few moments of awkward silence, James breaks the silence. "So, have you thought about it?" He asks Lily.

"Thought about what?" Lily asks cautiously.

"Don't you remember?"

Lily shakes her head.

Oh no, he’s probably going to ask her out again. Give the poor girl a break.

"I asked you if you wanted to go on a date with me, and you said 'I'll think about it'. Have you thought about it yet?" James asks, trying (and failing by the look on Lily's face) to lure her in.

"James, I fell asleep on one of the couches in the common room around at two in the morning after studying for my OWLs, so my brain might not have been functioning very well. So, I’m sorry, but for the millionth time, NO!" Lily shouts at him then stormed away.

“Ah, it’s OK, she’ll come around,” I say comfortingly, patting him on the back.

“James! Kat!” a voice came from just behind us. We both turned around to find Sirius running towards us with his trunk banging behind him, which earned some stares from passing muggles. He puts his trunk down and turns to James and practically bounced on top of him. Then he turns to me, but instead I bounced on him.

"Good to see you, Kat," he shouts in my ear.

"Good to see you too," I reply.

In case you’re wondering, no we are not a couple. We are best friends. There is a difference, people!

We get onto platform nine and three quarters, and heave our trunks onto the train with three minutes to spare.

"Hi Remus," I say as we pass Remus in the corridor.

"I'll catch up with you later, got prefect duties," Remus says matter-of-factly, walking past us. “Bye!” He calls over his shoulder

"Hi."

We all turned around to see who was talking to find Peter standing behind us.

"Hi Peter," Sirius says.

"Here's an empty compartment," I say, walking into the compartment on my right. Sirius slumps down on a seat next to the window. James sits across from him, Peter sits next to James and me next to Sirius.

"So, how was your summer, Peter?" James asks.

"Good, not much happened though. You?"

"Good, good. Kat and I didn't do anything, just lazed around," James answers truthfully. We are very lazy.

"You two are so weird," Sirius says randomly. Was he referring to me and James? Surely not. James and Kat Potter weird? You’re out of your mind.

"Who are weird?" Peter asks.

"James and Kat," Sirius says. He was referring to me and James. Go figure.

"And in what way are we weird, may I ask?" I ask.

"You get along."

"What's so weird about that?" James asks.

"You're siblings," Sirius says.

Nah, we’re just identical besties.

"Siblings always fight, but not you two. Take me and my brother for instance."

“C’mon, Sirius, that doesn’t count, you two don’t argue and bicker, you ignore him and Regulus practically disowned you as a brother,” I reason.

“Fine, but normal siblings fight, and you, my friends, are not normal by that standard.” Sirius says.

Well when you say it like that.

"We fight," James says, folding his arms in defence. "Don't we, Kat?"

"Yes, we do."

"No you don't, name one time you've fought," Sirius grins.

James and I mumble for a couple of seconds until I say, "once when I was little James pulled my hair."

Sirius and Peter burst out laughing.

"That doesn't count," Sirius says.

We stay silent, not admitting defeat, but not defending ourselves either.

"Ha! I knew it," Sirius says, obviously happy for being right.

After a while Remus came back, and the rest of the ride to Hogwarts was full of conversations of quidditch and James' obsessive love for Lily.

"Don't worry mate, she'll fall for you some day," I say.

"Yeah, but I want her to fall for me now!" James says as if he is a little boy throwing a tantrum. Which he actually was.

We pulled into Hogsmead station and started to get off the train. We got a carriage to ourselves and stayed silent the whole way to Hogwarts.

When we enter the great hall, we walk over to the Gryffindor table and took our seats, me next to Sirius with James, Peter and Remus across from me. Lily was sitting next to me but further towards Alice, another sixth grade Gryffindor. There was also Jade and Alyssa, but they kept to themselves.

After a bit, they brought the first years in to get sorted. I started zoning out a bit, seeing that none of them were my siblings. I just clap and cheer with the other Gryffindors when someone gets sorted into Gryffindor.

“Kat, Kat you there?” Sirius asks, waving a hand in front of my face. I snap out of my daze and look at Sirius expectantly.

“Food’s here,” he says, pointing to the now full plates in front of us. I look across to James, who is already halfway through his meal.

Wow, that boy can eat.

I pile my plate with chicken drumsticks and gravy, digging in.

“The house elves really outdid themselves,” James says through a mouthful of chicken. “We’ll have to go down and thank them some time.” We always go down to the kitchens for snacks. But it’s not like its mission impossible, the house elves are happy to give us extra food.

When we had finished dessert, the plates started clearing and Dumbledore starts his speech. It was pretty much the same as he does every year – ‘welcome first years and welcome back everyone else!’

“Come on, Kat, let’s go,” Sirius says, tugging my arm. I get up and follow my two best friends up to the common room. Lily was at the portrait of the fat lady, waiting for everyone else.

“OK, the password is humble bee. Everyone, try to remember it,” Lily says, opening the portrait hole, much of the first years amazement, and climbs in.

“Ah, home sweet home,” Sirius says, walking over to our arm chairs. We always sit there; we call it the ‘marauder corner’. Remus, Peter, Sirius, James and I are the marauders. James, Peter, Sirius and I are animagi, which means we can change into an animal, but the reason we did this was because of Remus. He is a werewolf. We nicknamed each other according to what we turn into. Remus is Moony, Peter changes into a rat, so he’s wormtail, Sirius changes into a dog, so he’s padfoot, James changes into a stag, so he’s prongs and I change into a cat, so I’m whiskers.

“Hey,” someone put their hands on my shoulders. I turn around to see Zach Smith smiling at me. Why was this goof smiling at me? Oh, that’s right, he’s my boyfriend. I admit that I have had lots of boyfriends over my years at Hogwarts, but I have never actually felt anything for any of them.

“Hi Zach,” I say, getting up and kissing him. “How was your summer?”

“Good, we didn’t do much though, you?”

“Same, Prongs and I didn’t do anything,” I say.

“Who’s Prongs?” He asks.

“Oh, I meant James,” I cover. Only the marauders new who belonged to each nickname. We still use our nicknames around other people, but they just don’t know who belongs to which nickname.

“Hi Potter,” Zach says.

“Smith,” James addresses coldly. He is very protective of me, and so is Sirius. I’m like a little sister to both of them.

“Kat, if you need anything, just tell us,” Sirius says, shooting one last glare at Zach before leaving. Peter and Remus follow.

“What’s up with you and Black?”

“What do you mean?” I ask defensively. Sirius and I weren’t fighting or anything, so what could be up between us?

“Well, are you friends? Because I’ve noticed you spend a lot of time together,” he asks.

“No, we’re best friends, actually,” I reply.

“Oh,” he says, making a disgusted face.

“Is there something wrong?” I ask.

“No, no not at all. It’s just… nothing.”
I spend ten more minutes with him and then go went back over to Padfoot and Prongs. They are sitting at the seats by the fire, Wormtail and Moony on the ground.

“Hey Whiskers,” Sirius says as I sit on his lap. “How’s Smith?” As he says this I noticed his fists clench.

“Oh, good, had a magnificent summer, oh am I forgetting something? Oh yes, he thinks we’re dating,” I reply acting normally. Everyone around me started laughing, James falling off his chair.

“He actually thought that?” Sirius asks, cracking a smile.

“Well, he asked if we were friends, and I said that we were best friends, and then he went all weird and clenched his fists so I asked him if there was something wrong and he just said nothing.”

“Someone’s jelly,” James teases. “Do you even like him?”

“Well, not really, he’s OK though,” I say.

“I’m going to bed now, I’m pretty tired,” Remus says, getting up and yawning. Peter gets up as well and follows him.

“’Night,” Remus says drowsily and starts climbing up the boys staircase.

“I might go to bed as well,” I say, getting up off Sirius’ lap and hugging him, then James.

“Good night guys,” and with that, I turn and headed up the girls staircase.

“Hi,” Lily says as I walk in through the door.

“Hi Lily,” I say as I slide off my robes and change into my pyjamas.

“Kat, can I ask a favour of you?” Lily asks, sitting on my bed.

“Sure, what is it?”

“Can you ask James to stop bugging me?” She asks pleadingly.

“Sorry, I can’t ask that much of him, he really likes you,” I say, putting a hand on her shoulder. “Why don’t you give him a chance?”

“No way, I will never go out with him! He’s an arrogant, lazy know it all! Oops, sorry Kat, I didn’t mean it,” she says, as I got up off the bed.

Do not talk that way about James in front of me, Lily Evans.

“It’s OK, I understand that you’re used to talk badly about siblings, considering what you have,” I know I’ve crossed the line, but she should have thought about that before she called James an arrogant, lazy know it all.

“Kat…” Alice warns me.

“Just because I don’t have the world’s most perfect sibling, doesn’t mean that you can go around saying that I have the worst! Petunia is getting married for goodness sake! And I don’t see James going around acting like an angel!” Lily shouts at me.

“Well you should have thought of that before you talked that way about James!” I shout back. I storm into the bathroom and start brushing my teeth furiously. I finish and storm back to my bed and dive under my covers.

“Good to be back,” I mutter, rolling over and I fall asleep almost instantly.
