Lily came running into the common room, holding a piece of parchment and screaming at the top of her voice. Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at her.
Alice had managed to give Al a black eye and a nose-bleed after Transfiguration, and we were in the common room after dinner. The purpleness around his eye had gone down slightly, but his nose was all puffy and red and ugly. Nadine was cuddled up with him in their armchair and I was on the sofa with Rose and Molly. Alice had gone off somewhere with Ethan and Brandon was sulking over in a corner. Dom was sitting on the arm of the sofa on Molly’s side, applying makeup. James was stretched out on the rug in front of the fire and Hugo was leaning against the arm of the sofa, looking bored.
When Lily came bursting in, we gaped at her. She leaped onto the sofa and started bouncing around and I think she broke one of Rose’s fingers when she jumped on them.
“GOOD NEWS GUYS!” she hollered, shoving parchment in Molly’s face. “READ IT!”
Molly cleared her throat. “Dear Lily and anyone else affected by the profanity ban, I am hereby lifting the ban from you as I think you’ve learned your lesson.”
“Ugh, finally!” James sighed.
“Oh, wait, there’s some more – Except James, who is a – whoa – and needs to control his mouth. Lots of love, Mum. Bad luck, James.”
“It’s all your fault, Geli.” James snapped, glowering at me.
“How come?” Rose asked, massaging her fingers. Lily looked at her apologetically and sat on the floor next to Hugo.
“Wait, wait, wait,” Al cut in, before I could say anything, “when was Geli making you swear? I mean, some people swear when they’re having –”
“Me and James never had sex, okay?” I interrupted.
Al held up his hands, “Hey, I’m not saying you did,”
“Yes, you are! Remember that stupid thing you said this morning about us? And now? For God’s sake, you are so immature! You need to grow up and stop being such a –” My voice caught in my throat and I tried to hold back tears. It wasn’t because of Al being an idiot. It was because my mother had said the exact same thing to me not long after I got my Hogwarts letter.
“Such a what?” Nadine said. “Aw, poor Geli can’t think of a comeback!” She started to cackle with laughter, but Rose, Molly, James, Hugo, Lily and Al were looking at me closely. When Nadine realised nobody was laughing at her dumb joke, she stopped snorting. “Ugh, you’re not seriously falling for her little crying act?”
I glared at her. I hadn’t told her about my parents, and I obviously wasn’t going to.
“Oh, come on!” Nadine said. “What a horrible little actress you are.”
I stood up. “I’d be careful about what you say,” I snapped before marching out of the common room.
Damn Nadine. If she and Brandon hadn’t arrived, none of this would be happening.
“Geli,” someone called. “It’s okay.”
Rose pulled me into a tight hug.
I sniffed. “It’s not. Everyone thinks me and James are doing things secretly.”
“No! Well, not really, but we’ve never had sex, I swear. And then, what I said to Al – my mum, she said that to me and I hate her but I don’t and I wish she was here, but I don’t and I really want to see Luca but I’ve not seen him in years and I don’t think I can cope with Nadine and Brandon here and –”
“Shh, shh, it’s okay,” Rose said, pushing my face into her chest and stroking my hair. It would have been nice, except for the fact that she was stroking me like best friends do, even when it’s supposed to be serious. I sniggered, then burst out laughing. I hugged her tightly. “Just ignore the shit Al comes out with. I think he’s jealous.” She quickly looked round to see if Ginny would pop up anywhere. “Wow. I guess Aunt Ginny really was serious about lifting the ban.”
“I’m glad,” I said. “Now we can properly fuck shit up.”
“Well, it’s good to see you back to normal. Shall we go back?” She took my hand and started dragging me back towards the common room without waiting for an answer.
“Ah, the actress came back,” Nadine chided once I’d sat back down. I ignored her.
“Where’s James?” Rose asked casually.
“He went up to the dorms,” Al replied. “Hey, Geli, maybe you should go and see if he’s okay and then you can start doing the shit you do up there.”
As Rose suggested, I ignored him too. I bit back a sarcastic retort and instead shot him the finger.
“Jealous of what, exactly?” I hissed to Rose.
She rolled her eyes at me. Rude. “You’ve been snogging James a lot recently. I think he’s figured something’s going on between you two. He so likes you.”
“That’s not an excuse for acting like an arsehole.” I reminded her quietly.
“I think James is waiting for you, Geli,” Al prompted. I glared at him.
“I don’t give a flying pig’s arse.” I snapped.
“That’s not a very nice thing to say about your sex buddy,” he went on, shaking his head and smirking.
“Rose,” I whispered, squeezing her fingers, “can I punch him? I mean, just a little bit?”
She studied her cousin carefully. “Be my guest.”
“Hey Geli,” Al said, “are you thinking about the last time you –”
Before he could finish, I went up to him and smacked him right across the face. The red mark on his cheek added to the purple bruise around his (amazing, gorgeous, beautiful) eye and the red swell on his nose.
“Fuck you, Albus Potter. I know you fancy me, but at the moment, I’m not really feeling it.” I slapped him again, stepped on his toes and ran up to the girls’ dorms. I crawled onto my bed and rolled onto my stomach.
“Since when does Al fancy you?” Nadine roared, bursting in.
“It’s none of your business,” I said to her.
“It is, seeing as I’m his girlfriend!” she shrieked at me. “Answer me, you bitch!” She grabbed my hair and pulled, hard.
“Piss off!” I screamed, kicking her in the gut. She let go of my hair and landed on the floor.
“WHOA, WHOA, WHOA!” Rose, Molly, Alice and Dom came bursting in. Dom came over and patted me on the back while I massaged the roots of my hair.
“Don’t you dare touch Geli’s hair. Ever.” Dom growled. I don’t know why, but Dom really likes my hair and gets really offended when people mess with it.
Oh, we learned that lesson years ago. I think Louis still has the scars.
James, Al and Brandon peeked in. Brandon made a disgusted noise and flounced off. Fine, go then! Bitch, I don’t need you!
“What just happened here?” Al asked, raising his eyebrows at me. I glared at him.
“Your psychotic girlfriend here decided I wanted my hair pulled out.”
“She told an absolute fucking lie down there!” Nadine screeched, pointing at me accusingly. “There is no way you would fancy that skank, right?”
Al pressed his lips together and stared at the floor. I tried to stop myself smirking at Nadine.
Yeah, bitch, that’s right.
Nadine gasped, then picked up a high-heeled shoe and threw it at Al, who dodged it just in time. “I cannot believe you! You actually fancy that slut?”
“I think you’re the slut around here, Nadine,” I interrupted, smiling at her sweetly. She looked like she wanted to strangle me. She turned back to Al.
“We are SO through, Albus Potter!” She charged right past them and out of the dorm. A few seconds later, I heard the portrait hole slam shut and the Fat Lady said something like,
“Well, really! How extremely rude and uncivilised of you, young lady!”
“Uh … I should probably go after her or something,” Al said, blushing. Dom, Rose, Molly, Alice and I glared at him and he hurried off.
“Are you okay?” James asked me. I nodded.
“Yup. I’ve had more than enough experience dealing with psychopathic bitches.” I reassured him, looking pointedly at the girls.
Rose, who was nodding in agreement, caught me looking and said, “Hey! I’m not a psychopathic bitch! That’s Dom.”
James laughed. “Well, I think that’s enough weirdness for one day. Night.” He smiled at me and left.
I quietly slipped out of my uniform and put on my pyjamas before wriggling under the duvet.
“Goodnight.” I said. Rose jumped on me. “Gah! What part of ‘goodnight’ don’t you understand?”
“The ‘goodnight’ part.” Rose said, tickling me. I squirmed and tried to bat her away. “So, Nadine and Al broke up. This could be your chance.”
“Chance to do what?”
“You know, go out with him.”
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, maybe. Goodnight, Rose,” I said again. When she just sat there grinning at me creepily, I kicked her in the stomach and she fell off my bed. I laughed and quickly shut the hangings around my bed.
Ah, weekends. I love ’em.
Not much had happened since Al and Nadine’s breakup, except that Brandon and Nadine would disappear after dinner and not show up until early in the morning. Also, Al and Rose seemed to be plotting something. I wasn’t sure what, but I could only hope it was good.
It was. Sort of. It depends where you stand. And who you are. I mean, if you were like, Professor Longbottom or something, you wouldn’t really care, but I mean, for me it was good. I guess.
So on Saturday, Rose came bounding into the common room and jumped on me. “GeliGeliGeliGeli!” she squealed. “Come with me!” Without waiting for an answer, she grabbed me hand and dragged me out of the common room with her. She wouldn’t tell me anything until we reached a classroom along the Charms corridor.
“Go on in,” she said, prodding me in the back.
I raised my eyebrow at her. “There isn’t some sort of man-eating beast in there that you stole from Hagrid, and you’re going to lock me in there as some sort of revenge because I called you a psychotic bitch the other day?”
“Well, not exactly. It’s not revenge or anything!” She giggled, pushing me more.
“Wait, you didn’t say anything about there not being a man-eating beast. There isn’t a man-eating beast, right?” But she pushed me right into the classroom and slammed the door in my face. “Crap. You are so dead, Rose!”
“I think you’ll be thanking me for this later on!” I heard her say.
“I’m not going to thank you for locking me in a classroom with a bloody man-eating beast!” I shrieked.
“Gosh, I know I’m not exactly the most handsome guy in the world, but I wouldn’t call myself a man-eating beast.” I whipped round.
“Fuck you.” I spat at Al before turning back to the door and pounding on it.
“If you really want to.” He circled his arms around my waist and pulled me away from the door.
“Is this what you and Rose have been planning?” I said, trying to release myself from his grip.
He shrugged. “Perhaps. Maybe we should have a chat before we get down to all the … physical stuff.” He pulled his arms away from me and I shot him the finger before hoisting myself up onto one of the desks.
“So talk.” I said. “Why exactly have you and Rose decided to drag me here and lock me in with … you?”
“Aw, come on, Geli, there’s nobody else you’d rather be in here with than me!”
“There’s nobody else I’d rather punch right now,” I muttered, folding my arms across my chest and scowling at him. “Talk.”
“Okay, fine. So, seeing as we’re both single now, and, y’know, we both fancy the pants off each other –” He winked at me as if to say “Let’s take our pants off!”, which wasn’t going to happen any time soon “– we should hook up.”
I didn’t say anything. He grinned at me widely and gave me puppy dog eyes.
I jumped off the desk and started making my way towards the door. I was nearly there when a pair of strong arms wrapped around my waist and turned me. I found myself very close to Al.
“Pleeeeeeeease,” he whispered, tilting his head close to mine. I rolled my eyes.
“If I say okay, will you stop bothering me?” He nodded eagerly. I could feel sparks again, somewhere deep in my stomach, and soon I could feel the fireworks display and Firewhiskey-fuelled conga party again. Al’s face was getting closer, and my arms were moving of their own accord – sliding up his chest and around the back of his neck. His green eyes had captured me in their grip (can eyes grip you? Like, seeing as they have no hands or anything) and I could feel his breath on my face.
I felt like I was going to explode. When he brought his lips down to mine, I made this weird sound that was sort of between a scream and a sob and pulled him closer towards me.
“ABOUT BLOODY TIME!” Rose screeched, bursting in.
Al smiled and gently pulled away, resting his forehead on mine. “Let’s not tell Nadine just yet.”
“Shit! I need to talk to him!” I touched the tip of Al’s nose with my lips before hurrying past Rose and started my search for James. I found him in the grounds near the lake.
“James,” I said, sitting down next to him, “I’ve come to a decision about that offer.”
“It took you long enough,” he said, rolling his eyes.
I smiled a little, but became serious almost at once. “I don’t think now is the best time. I mean, I’m still kind of getting over Brandon and me and Al – I – I mean, we don’t want them to get even more suspicious. Maybe it’s best if we stay away from each other for a while.”
His face fell. “Well, can I have one more kiss?”
I bit my lip. “Better not. Al’s over there. Don’t want him spreading rumours or anything.” Instead I hugged him tightly and made my way over to Al. “Don’t say anything to James about what just happened, okay? Or you’re dead.”
Al smirked and nodded. He patted my shoulder awkwardly and started making his way towards James.
I couldn’t believe it.
Rose came zooming towards me. She grabbed my shoulders and shook me, bouncing around everywhere.
“Are you drunk again?” I said, rolling my eyes.
“Well, I bet you’re glad you let me take you to that classroom, aren’t you?” she squealed, still shaking me. I gently let myself out of her grip and grinned.
“Very. But don’t go telling everyone.” I warned.
Rose bit her lip. “Ah …”
“Rose! You idiot! Who did you tell?”
“Nobody! I was merely saying ‘ah’ because I was agreeing with you, silly. I’m not that stupid. My mother is Hermione Granger, after all.”
Someone suddenly whacked me really hard on my back. It was James, and he looked very upset. “Time for Quidditch practice, remember?”
I checked my watch. It was nearly ten, so I grabbed Rose’s arm and dragged her back up to the dorms, where I gathered up my Quidditch robes. “You’re coming to the practice, right?”
“Sure,” Rose said, twirling a comb between her fingers and quickly dragging it through her hair. We hurried down to the Quidditch pitch. Most of the team were already on their brooms, waiting for everyone else to arrive. Rose went to sit up in the stands while I made my way into the changing rooms. Alice was in there, pulling her hair into a ponytail.
“Why do you look so happy?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh, no reason.” I quickly changed into my Quidditch robes and I – um – borrowed Alice’s hairbrush to tie a quick plait.
Just as Alice and I were about to make our way onto the pitch when Al came in. He quickly glanced at Alice and winked. Then he grabbed me around the waist and kissed my cheek, tickling me with his fingers at the same time. Then he let go and departed into the bathroom.
“So that’s why you look happy,” Alice said, rolling her eyes. “What happened?”
We walked out onto the pitch and crossed to the broom cupboard. I grabbed my Firebolt and Alice picked up her Golden Bullet.
“Rose insisted I come with her to some classroom, and she locked me in there with him, and then we ended up kissing. Somehow.” I picked at the twigs at the end of the broom. “But don’t tell anyone! Especially not Nadine and Brandon.”
When everyone was gathered on the pitch, James called, “Okay, everyone! Our next match is against either Hufflepuff or Slytherin. It depends who wins the game tomorrow – it’ll probably be Slytherin, so we need to train hard. We’ll warm up by flying around the pitch and then we’ll play a practice game. Five minutes for warm ups, okay? Get going.”
I mounted my broom and slowly rose into the air. I flew steadily next to Alice.
“So are you together then?” she asked me, brushing a stray hair out of her face.
“I don’t know,” I said. “I think so. Does one kiss count?”
“You both fancy each other, so I guess it does,” Alice said. Then she grinned at me and lightly punched my arm. “Well, you finally got your man, eh?”
“Oi!” James barked. “Geli and Alice, could you keep the gossiping off the pitch?”
I realised everyone had gone nearly three times around the pitch and we were still on our first lap. “Sorry!” I called. Alice and I flew quicker. Al came up behind us.
“I’m on my fourth lap and you’ve not even gone around once.” He grinned at us, shaking his head.
“Shut up,” I said, poking him in the side.
“You’re just jealous,” he said, sticking his tongue out, “because I finally kissed the girl of my dreams.”
“Yeah, that’s me, stupid.”
“Who says it’s you? I could’ve kissed the real girl of my dreams on my way down here.” He smirked at us. Alice’s jaw dropped, but I just glared at him.
“I will throw you off your broom, Potter.”
“I’m sure you will.”
“Stop patronizing me!”
“I’m not patronizing you!”
“Yes you are! I hear it in your tone!” He rolled his eyes. “Don’t roll your eyes at me, Albus Severus.”
“I’ll do what I please, Angeliquina.”
“I will punch you in the face. I’m not joking. I don’t care if I fancy you, I will do it.” Al smirked again and flew off. I glared at his back as Alice and I flew after him. James called us down and we landed on the grass.
“Can I ask what you two were so busy gossiping about that you hardly managed one lap of the pitch?” James snapped, looking annoyed.
“Oh, sorry, they were talking about me.” Al cut in, raising his hand. “Because I’m so adorable and they love me so much.”
James scowled at all three of us. “Whatever. Let’s get on with the game. Everyone, get into position. I elbowed Al in the gut and got on my broom. James let out the Snitch and the Bludgers, then, with the Quaffle under his arm, he rose into the air.
Blowing the whistle, he threw the Quaffle at Al. It landed hard on his chest and his face went red, but he quickly regained himself and started flying towards the Keeper, Peter Wood. Us Chasers were practicing our throwing and flying techniques, while Peter was trying to improve Keeping.
Al dodged between Bigfoot Two and Bigfoot One and threw the Quaffle through the left hoop.
“Stay on the ball, Peter!” James called, looking around for the Snitch.
I suddenly found myself in possession of the Quaffle, and I was weaving my way towards the goal hoops when I saw something in the stands. Rose was sitting alone, but she wasn’t watching us. Not far away from her was Scorpius. He was sitting a few seats away from her two rows above, but he was with some blonde girl. They were kissing, and Rose was looking at them jealously. Even from here I could see she was hurt.
Without thinking, I dropped the Quaffle and landed on the grass. I threw my broom and ran up to the stands. I sat beside Rose and slipped my arm through hers.
Ignoring James, who was screaming at me to stop messing about and “get the fudge back on that broom!”, I whispered to Rose,
She quickly wiped a tear from her cheek and nodded. “I’m fine. He – he can be with whoever he wants.”
“I didn’t realise you’d split up,” I said, letting her rest her head on my shoulder.
“He told me he needed some space after … after that thing that happened with Gabbo Goyle.” Rose muttered, sniffing.
“You want me to talk to him? Or … you know … beat him up?” I suggested. “I’d be happy to do either.” Rose giggled.
“It’s okay. Maybe we both need some space for now.”
Scorpius and Blondie got up and left. I noticed Scorpius glancing over at Rose when they passed.
“I think I’ll go now,” Rose said once they’d gone. “I’ll see you later, Geli.”
Before I could say anything else, she’d gone. I jumped down to the pitch and picked up my broom. Everyone else had landed.
“What the hell was about, Geli?” James yelled.
“Rose was upset,” I said, pouting.
“I don’t care! You can’t do things like that when we’re playing!”
“What do you mean, ‘I don’t care’? It’s ROSE! Your cousin? Yeah, she was upset because Scorpius has got himself a new bitch. Not that you’d care, because Quidditch is obviously more important to you than anything else.” I yelled back.
“I didn’t –”
“Fuck you! Fuck Quidditch! You know what, I’m glad I didn’t take you up on that offer. I’m done.”
I found Rose. After I yelled at James, I’d thrown the broom at him, got changed and run back up to the castle.
Rose was in the dorms, lying face-down on her bed, crying her eyes out.
“Rose,” I said quietly, grabbing a tissue from her bedside table. She got up and wiped at her eyes. I handed her the tissue, which she took and dabbed her eyes. “You are not okay.”
“Has Quidditch practice finished then?” she asked, ignoring my comment completely.
Well, that was completely rude and inappropriate.
“Not exactly,” I said. “I quit the team.”
“What? Why?” Rose gasped.
“Never mind. You want to go down to the kitchens and eat our weight in cookie dough ice-cream?” I asked, nudging her and grinning. Rose smiled weakly and nodded. I grabbed her hand and dragged her out of the dorms.
On the way down to the dorms, we bumped into Al.
“Why did you quit?” he asked me while patting Rose on the back comfortingly. At least, I think it was supposed to be a nice gesture. Rose looked like she was about to throw up.
“Because James is an idiot.” I said. “My friends are more important to me than Quidditch. He can find himself another Chaser.”
Al looked at me and Rose, then said, “Where are you off to?”
“The kitchens. We want to drown our sorrows in a sixty-kilogram tub of cookie dough ice-cream.” I said.
“Can I come with you?” he asked eagerly.
I looked at Rose, who shrugged, but she was smiling. “Okay then,” she said.
As we walked, Al slipped his hand into mine and walked close to me, but I saw Rose glancing at our joined hands and sniffing discreetly, so I let go of Al and took hold of Rose’s hand instead. Al raised his eyebrows at me, but I winked at him and gestured to Rose, who was hiding her face behind her hair. I had a feeling she was crying again.
“I don’t want to tickle the pear,” Al announced once we’d reached the painting.
“Why not?” Rose asked.
“It’s wrong! Like, tickling a pear. It’s just … weird.”
“Like you,” I said, stretching out my hand to the pear, which laughed (can pears laugh?) and turned into a green handle. Al tried to look offended, but the sight of hundreds of tiny house elves hurrying up to us and screaming at us in squeaky voices made him smile again. Tiny hands grabbed us and yanked us inside.
Violent house elves.
“What can Jilly get you, sir and misses?” I recognised the house elf who’d given me the tacos and hot chocolate.
“Cookie dough ice-cream,” I said, “lots of it.”
Jilly hurried off and a few more house elves grabbed our clothes and led us to a table. Jilly came back with about twelve other house elves, all staggering towards us under a silver platter with three buckets – and I mean buckets – of cookie dough ice-cream, which they slammed onto the table along with three spoons. “Enjoy!” Jilly squeaked before scurrying off.
I picked up my spoon and tilted the bucket towards me. It was so big I couldn’t see over the top. Rose was looking worried, as if she thought she might spontaneously combust if she had too much, but Al was digging in and he already had half of the bucket on his face.
“That,” I said to Rose, “is extremely childish.” She giggled and dug her spoon into the surface of the ice-cream.
In no time, she had more of it on her face than in her mouth and she was giggling like a drunk person.
Suddenly, the door to the kitchens opened again, and two people walked in. It was James and Brandon, who both scowled at me and Al. They ignored Rose, who was happily scooping away at her ice-cream.
They sat down at our table and some house elves brought them each a bucket.
YAY AN ICE-CREAM PARTY!
The two of them sat opposite Al and I, glaring while they ate.
Finally, Rose spoke up. “You know it’s rude to stare, right?” James shot her the finger, which made me really angry.
“You think you’re so cool, don’t you?” I snapped at him. “Because you’re the oldest, and because you’re the Quidditch captain. First you tell me you don’t care Rose is upset, and now you’re rude to her when she’s pointing something out you’re doing wrong!”
The house elves around us stopped what they were doing and stared at us. Creepy little weirdos.
James narrowed his eyes, then wrapped his arms around his bucket and left, with Brandon close behind. Rose squeezed my hand and smiled. It would have been a “moment”, but her cheeks were bulging with ice-cream and she looked like her old hamster. I loved that silly thing. It died last year (Hugo killed it, but Rose doesn’t know that, so shh!)
Al started snorting into his bucket, and I smacked him on the knee.
Rose mumbled something, but her face was still full of ice-cream, so it came out something like,
“Snoo miffnt smaf tah snoo knat.”
“In English, please,” I said, trying not to laugh at her. She swallowed her ice-cream and said,
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“Hey, it makes me mad when guys are rude to my friends.” I shot Al a look, and he held up his hands innocently. “Speaking of which, I should go kick Scorpius in the –”
“Wait, what did Scorpius do?” Al interrupted.
“The bastard said to Rose he wanted some space after Goyle attacked her, and then he goes off and gets himself a new bitch.” I said, holding my spoon so tight my knuckles went white. Hmm. White looks good on me.
Al looked angry too. He stood up, his eyes narrowed. He looked kind of like Rose’s old cat. I never liked that crazy thing. It used to jump on my head whenever I looked at it and it was always angry. And it looked like it had been kicked in the face by a donkey. It ran away in our second year. I preferred the hamster.
“I am going to look for him,” he said stiffly, “and then I am going to beat him up.”
“So am I,” I said, standing also. I took one last huge spoon of ice-cream and followed him out of the kitchens. Rose scampered behind us saying,
“No, no!” But I think she was enjoying herself, because she was smirking slightly.
When we found him, he was with his bitch. They were in the Transfiguration courtyard snogging in front of everyone.
Al went right up to him and grabbed his collar, pulling him away from Blondie, who screamed,
“Who do you think you are?”
I slapped her in the face. “Get lost, bitch! Who the fuck are you, anyway?”
“My name,” she said, “is Princess Marvell.” She said it like it was some sort of honour or something, flicking her hair over her shoulder and staring at me, trying to psych me out or something. Creepy weirdo. She looked like a house elf.
I ignored her and turned to Scorpius who seemed to be having a staring contest with Al. I stepped on his foot.
“What the HELL do you think you’re doing?” I said to him. “You said you needed space and then you go and hook up with someone else! Who does that?”
He glared at the ground and pressed his lips together.
“Who even is she? Some bimbo you picked up?” No reply. Well, he talks a lot, doesn’t he? “Do you even know what you’ve done to Rose?” I pointed at her. She was looking at the ground, blushing.
Princess Blondie or whatever her name was quietly snuck away. Yeah, you better run, bitch.
“I’m sorry,” Scorpius said finally, staring at Rose. “Princess has liked me for ages, and when she found out we were … taking time apart, she jumped me.”
“Yes! I’m sorry, Rose. I never meant for you to get upset like this.” He took a step towards her and she looked up at him.
“It’s okay,” she said. He wrapped his arms around her. “Just don’t do it again.”
Well, I sure do wish I could be as forgiving as my Rosie is. Unfortunately, I tend to hold lifelong grudges. And I make sure they know. And they will die knowing I still hate them. Yep, that thought makes me happy.
Okay, you’ve probably already booked me in for therapy.
As Rose and Scorpius walked away hand in hand, Al and I sort of stood there awkwardly.
“Bye then,” I said to Rose’s back. She didn’t turn around. Rude.
“Back to the kitchens?”
“I guess so.”
He gently laced his fingers through mine. “You know,” he said quietly, “we have to tell James and the others soon.”
I groaned and pressed my forehead into his shoulder. “Then everything will get messed up and Nadine will probably throw me off the Astronomy Tower.”
Al laughed. “Don’t worry. Nadine can’t do anything to you, or we’ll go straight to Neville, okay?”
I sighed. “Okay. What did you say to James earlier, anyway?”
“Ah … nothing.”
“Al. Tell me.” I demanded.
“Fine,” he said. I have such power over people. I love it. “Imayhaveversoslightlytoldhimthatwekissed.”
“Seriously? That’s why he was being such a bitch before?”
“I guess. Can guys be bitches? Seeing as a bitch is a female dog and all.” I glared at him and he shut up. “But he told me he was fine with it.”
“He would say that,” I said. “But trust me, he’s not.”
“How do you know?”
“Oh, I can tell. It’s a girl thing, you wouldn’t understand.” He laughed and bent down to kiss me again. He suddenly paused and his eyes widened. “What?” I said. He cleared his throat and let go of me. He stepped on my toes lightly and I turned around. “Oh,” I said.
Nadine looked like she was ready to explode. Her face had gone bright red like a tomato and she was standing with one hip to the side as if she’d dislocated it or something. She cracked her knuckles like she was ready for a fight, so I rolled up my sleeves.
“Okay, bitch,” I said, “shit just got real.”
“For Merlin’s sake, Geli, you are such an idiot!” Rose scolded, pressing the ice-pack onto my forehead again.
“Ow!” I winced, scowling at her. “Hey, Nadine started it! Is my nose bleeding again?”
“Well, like the other forty-two times you’ve asked that in the past hour, no.” Still, I checked my nose. You can never trust your best friend, especially if she’s annoyed at you and her name is Rose Weasley.
My nose wasn’t bleeding.
It had been about an hour since I came to the hospital wing with a bleeding nose, a black eye (well, it was more sort of dark purple), six broken fingers and a huge lump on my head. It turns out Nadine can really throw a punch. And she has a marvellous right-hook.
She was unconscious somewhere in the hospital wing. I regret to say it wasn’t me who knocked her out. Just as I was about to elbow her in the ribs and punch her in the boobs at the same time, Albus had the brilliant idea that he should Stupefy her. No, seriously, it was brilliant because I was about to collapse. Just goes to show how extremely fit I am.
“You are such an idiot, Geli,” Scorpius snorted. He was standing behind Rose, who was sat in the chair, and laughing. I glared at him.
“I may be extremely physically unfit, but I can sure as hell kick you really hard if I wanted to.” I snapped. Well, I’m not violent at all, am I?
Al came in, rolling his eyes. “Nadine’s still out cold,” he said.
“Good,” I said. “I hope she falls into a coma.”
Rose looked at me reproachfully. God, why does she have to be so nice all the time? Scorpius stifled a snort and quickly covered it up with a cough and Al smirked.
“Well, we can’t always get what we want.” He came and stood on the other side of the bed, gently touching my forehead with his lips. “James sent Mum a letter about you.”
I groaned. “Oh, no. What did he say?”
“I’m not sure. He wouldn’t show me. He just left for the Owlery. Hopefully we’ll get Mum’s reply by tomorrow.”
“Fuck. If he tells her about me and you, I don’t know what she’s going to do. Start planning the wedding probably,” I sighed.
“And name all our children,”
“And tell us how many we’re supposed to have.”
“Yes, that’s what we’re supposed to do to have children, silly.” I said, grinning. Rose and Scorpius both snorted really loudly and Al glared at them. He glared at me, too, and I stopped grinning.
Molly and Alice came rushing in. “Geli! What happened?” Molly squealed.
“Ah, I got in a fight with Nadine.” I said, trying not to scream as Molly squeezed me so hard I thought I was going to die.
“What happened to her?” Alice asked, squeezing my shoulder lightly.
“She’s unconscious somewhere,” I said.
Alice and Molly noticed that Al was standing very close to me and that his fingers were gently intertwined with mine. Molly made a weird noise and pointed to our hands. Al blushed, and I was about to reply when Madam Pomfrey came in.
“Go away!” she shrieked, ushering them out and beating them with some book or something. “I need to keep her overnight to check she’ll be okay. Now get out, the poor girl needs rest!”
“Bye,” I said miserably as they left. I heard Molly say,
“What the hell was that about, Albus?”
“I can’t sleep,” I said to Madam Pomfrey, “everything hurts. And Molly didn’t do me any favours, bloody idiot.”
Madam Pomfrey uncorked a bottle and turned to me. The bottle was long and grey and had some sort of icky liquid sloshing about inside it.
“This should numb the pain and send you to sleep. Don’t worry, it doesn’t taste of anything.” I took the bottle and peered into it. I raised an eyebrow at the matron and she nodded. So I decided to trust her. Man, was that the biggest mistake I’ve ever made.
Even if I was knocked out three seconds after I’d finished the thing, it tasted so disgusting I wanted to barf it all up again. But before I could register the taste properly, I was asleep.
Damn you, Madam Pomfrey.
As you can probably imagine, this noise woke me up. I picked up my wand with my good hand (the one with four fingers still working)and shone a light over my part of the hospital wing. I couldn’t see anyone, so I just thought it was Madam Pomfrey, doing whatever she does at … four o’ clock in the morning. Yeah.
I put out the light and dropped my wand back onto the bedside table. I rubbed my eyes and lay back down. Bloody hell, I didn’t realise how tired I was.
Just as I was about to fall back asleep, the curtain that separated my part of the hospital wing was yanked aside and someone came in.
As tired as I was, I could tell it wasn’t Madam Pomfrey – it wasn’t even a woman. From the little amount of light coming from the window, I could see it was a man with a short crew cut and he was quite burly. He was breathing heavily and he came right up to my bed and leaned over me. I quickly shut my eyes and pretended to be asleep while the man grabbed my face and turned it this way and that. After a minute or so, he let go of me and stomped out.
I had absolutely no idea who he was. He couldn’t be a teacher or anything. I was really confused, and really scared. I’d have to tell someone about it in the morning.
There was another crash and the man’s heavy breathing quietened down.
But then I thought about something else.
Nadine and Brandon had always made this guy Paul out to be some sort of monster. He’d obviously done something terrible.
What if that was him?
