CHAPTER  FIFTEEN:  Wake Me Up When September Ends

Here comes the rain again, falling from the stars

Drenched in my pain again, becoming who we are

As my memory rests, it never forgets what I lost

Wake me up when September ends

~ Wake Me Up When September Ends ~ Green Day ~

“It’s nice having someone to talk to.” Lily commented. It was the day after we heard about David’s family, and he hadn’t returned to school yet. “Can I ask you a question?” We were walking through the soggy, cold grounds together. I had only agreed to come because Perry was being unbearable to be around- throwing herself into her studies and trying to pretend she was okay with everything even though she wasn’t. I was sure she was going to be, soon, but until then I didn’t feel like watching the pained effort she was making to look normal.  Alice and Frank were being Alice and Frank, and talking to Lily was like a healthy dose of regularity.

“Sure.” I said.

“Does Perry hate me?” This was not what I’d been expecting and I whipped my head round to look at her. She’d ducked her head to hide her face behind her long red hair.

“No.” I answered.

“Are you sure?” Lily insisted.  The truth was, I wasn’t sure, but I didn’t want to tell her that.

“Not as far as I know. Why?”

“I don’t know. I suppose because I’m stepping on her territory a bit with David. I am aware of that, you know.” She smiled uneasily.

“She said her and David are just going to be friends. She says they never work out as a couple and it wasn’t meant to be.” I told her honestly, recalling my conversation with Perry at lunch the day before.

“Oh,” Lily actually looked relieved. “I was so worried! I mean, I like David a lot, but I didn’t want to upset Perry or anything. Only she gave me a weird look earlier when I saw her…”

“She’s in a weird mood.” I told her. “Don’t worry.”

“Okay.” Lily breathed. After a quiet moment, she spoke again, “James still hasn’t asked me out.”

“He hasn’t asked anyone else out either.” I reminded her. “Not after that date with that Hufflepuff girl.”

“Still.  I don’t think he likes me anymore.”

“I don’t know.” I shrugged, but then I remembered my conversation with Sirius beside the lake what seemed like a million years ago even though it was only a few weeks. “I think he still cares.”

“I don’t know if I want him to. I never would’ve had such a good chance at being happy with David if he’d been bugging me the whole time. He scared all the other boys away before.” I recalled James hexing any boy who came within a mile radius of Lily in previous years.

“I think he’s just gotten better at controlling his jealousy, maybe.” I suggested. “And if you don’t want him to care, why are you talking about him?”

“Well, aside from arguing, we used to kind of be friends. Kind of. Anyway, now he treats me like a stranger, and it’s weird. I thought we could at least be… friends.” Lily shook her head. “This year’s been so different.”

“Yeah, it has.” I agreed. “Not always for the best.”

“There you are!” Alice shrieked, bursting into the dormitory. I looked at the clock; it was almost midnight. “Where else would I be?”

“Oh.” Alice blushed. “I guess so… anyway…”

“Merlin’s beard! What is wrong with you Prewett? Some of us are trying to sleep.” Winnie had ripped back her hangings to glare at us. Well, Alice had been loud, but I hated when Winnie was rude for no reason.

“Well, at least it’s not beauty sleep, seeing as it’s you.” I retorted. Perry would’ve been proud of that one- where was Perry, actually? I glanced at her empty bed. Alice followed my gaze, and grabbed my wrist, dragging me out of the dormitory. She shut the door behind us.

“That’s what I came to tell you! Perry’s in the Hospital Wing!” Alice cried, her big round eyes bulging out at me.

“What?” I gasped, “Why?”

“She was duelling Snape! He said something to her about- about Remus.” I stared.

“About Remus?” I repeated. “What- how did this even happen?”

“I don’t really know. He ended up Stunning her and Madame Pomfrey gave her a Sleeping Potion as soon as she came round.” Alice explained. “But Frank was the one who caught them and put a Shield Charm between them- Snape got the Stunner through at the last second. Frank just said he heard Perry telling Snape to stop saying things about Remus and then- well, that was it.”

It took me a long time to digest this information.

“What’s Snape been saying about Remus?” I wanted to know. I was completely out of the gossip loop- I never seemed to have time for other people’s dramas on top of my own these days.

“He’s been saying- saying he’s a werewolf.”

A/N: Another chapter up! A very short one, I know, but quite an important turning point in the story again :) so, please review! I'd really like to know what you think :)
