Hailey looked back at Jason. She'd missed him so much but she couldn't deny the pain in her chest at Sirius leaving her. The problem was that that was exactly who Sirius was and deep down Hailey knew that. He just hooks up with girls and then leaves.
Sirius stormed into the griffindor common room, plopped down onto the brown lounger he always sat on and let out a loud huff. Begrudgingly he pulled out his transfigurations essay.
Remus and James who were sitting on a couch nearby apon hearing Sirius became curious.
"Should we say something?" James asks Remus, "I mean Padfoot never does his homeowork especially not transfigurations."
"That's more your area of expertise," Remus responded sort of backing away, "You are his bestfriend," He added for extra convincing.
"Oh but Moony you're so much better at this kind of stuff," James adds and in the distance Lily calls for him, "and plus me lady's calling." and with that James fleed the scene."
So Remus being the nice guy he is decided to approach Sirius. He went and sat on the chair beside Sirius in silence since he had no idea where to begin.
After a minute or so Sirius asked rather rudely, "what do you want?"
"I just want to know what's up with you." when Sirius didn't answer Remus continued, "You've been ... Well different lately and I wanted to know why and maybe I could help out?"
Sirius took a moment before saying, "It just really sucks that love doesn't exist." With that the portrait hall opened and Hailey walked through it. She found Sirius and walked over to him. She kneeled down beside his chair and said, "Sirius you didn't have to storm off like that. You-"
But she was cut off by Sirius. He was furious with her. He stood up out of his chair and yelled, "AS IF I WANTED TO STAY AND WATCH YOU AND WOOD MAKE FACES AT ONE AND ANOTHER!"
"WELL YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BE SUCH A DRAMA QUEEN!" Hailey screamed back, now also on her feet.
"HOW AM I A DRAMA QUEEN-" Sirius began but was cut short by Hailey screaming, "YOU'RE THE ONE WHOSE ALWAYS RANTING ABOUT LOVE DOESN'T EXIST AND JUST BECAUSE I HAVE IT AND YOU DON'T YOU'RE BEING ALL BITCHY!"
"I'M BITCHY?!? YOU'RE THE BITCH HERE!"
"IS THAT THE EXTENT OF YOUR VOCABULARY? MAKES SENSE SINCE YOU'VE NEVER WRITTEN AN ESSAY IN ALL YOU LIFE."
"ARE YOU SERIOUSLY YELLING AT ME FOR NOT DOING MY HOMEWORK?!? YOU'RE SUCH A NERD!"
Their yelling match went on for a while until they both stormed off into their dorms. The rest of the common room who had just witness yet another Sirius Hailey fight were gossiping their ears off. This had been their first fight since they'd tried to become friends. What happened? Remus in particular was pondering that question. He thought he would just stay out of it until Sirius settled down.
Turns out Sirius didn't settle down for a good week. He was temperamental about every thing. He was knocking kids over in the halls and he was late to every class. But after a week James decided to talk to him. But the one thing Remus had noticed was that Hailey was not upset at all, Jason Wood had come back to visit and they were being the same Hogwarts it couple. He and James wondered if the two things had a connection so James got up his courage and approached Sirius by the river.
Sirius looked up at James and tried to play it cool, "Hey Prongs what's up?"
James decided he'd just get straight into it, "What happened with you and Hailey?" The question took Sirius by surprise. When he didn't answer James thought he'd continue, "You two were getting along so well. What changed?"
James waited a couple of seconds for Sirius' response, "Do you want the story I should tell you or the real one?" this wasn't the answer James was expecting but then again James had no idea what to expect so he asked for the real story.
"It's really long though-" Sirius began, "I've got time," James cut him off. And with that Sirius began his story a story James was the first to year a story that Sirius was scared to tell but he did and James listened. At the end of it James finally understood, Sirius really liked her and wanted her back though he hadn't said that.
It was James' turn to talk now, "So why don't you just ask her to be your girlfriend?"
"I was going to ask her that last week, but then Wood showed up." Sirius sulked.
"That doesn't mean they're dating again." James was trying so hard to find a silver lining.
Sirius on the other hand was just stating the facts as they were, "I'm pretty sure they are." He said and pointed to a tree behind James' head. When James looked over he say where Sirius had been staring for most of their conversation. Hailey and Jason were hooking up.
Sirius stood up and yelled "GET A ROOM!" before storming off back into the castle.
Hailey looked up at Sirius' little act and turned to apologize to Jason, "I'm sorry Jay I don't know what his deal is-" but the thing was Jason knew and he'd known it for a while, he saw the way Sirius looked at her when he'd been at Hogwarts and how it still hadn't changed. He had always tried to ignore it, but he couldn't do that anymore.
"Hailes look you know I love you and I always will," Jason started and Hailey looked petrified she knew how this statement would end, "but I won't be able to come visit again for a while and I think it's best of we find someone else to spend our time with. I know we said that we could make this long distance work, but I don't think we should anymore."
Hailey had tears in her eyes, the saddest part of it was she knew he was right. But she couldn't bring herself to say anything, to protest to tell him she loved him to tell him about her and Sirius. So she didn't say anything and he leaned forward and kissed her on the forehead and left the Hogwarts grounds. She just sat there staring at where he had just left. A few moments later Remus was walking through the grounds, saw her and decided to swoop in.
"I don't know what I did." Was all she could think to say when Remus sat down beside her.
"What happened?" Remus had talked to James about Hailey and Sirius, but James had said that the Sirius problem was a family thing.
"Jason just ... I guess he just... broke up with me ... so real this time though." Hailey continued to stare into the distance.
"I'm so sorry," Remus was almost shocked, this wasn't the news he was expecting, he thought he'd hear Sirius' name in her snetence "Maybe it's for the best, now you can be ... free."
"I guess you're right," Hailey finally turned to Remus and continued, "You always are Reem." And with that she slowly got up said she'd see him around and headed back to the common room.
When Hailey entered the common room the first thing she noticed was Sirius sitting in his lounger. When he saw her he scrowled, "Did Wood decide that you weren't really that great of a kisser?"
She was rather annoyed with his comment but she wasn't in the mood to fight with him. She'd just lost Jason and didn't want to lose Sirius too so she decided to just ignore his rudeness and said, "He just broke up with me."
Sirius didn't react at all, he simply replied "Didn't he already do that? Didn't you move on or did you just need his permission first."
"I guess, but now it's real," Hailey was glad Sirius wasn't yelling at her, but she was starting to get annoyed with his tone. He however was beyond pissed off with her so he abruptly turned towards her.
"SO YOU WERE STILL TOGETHER WHEN YOU KISSED ME!" He yelled at her. The entire common room went silent and looked over at the pair of them, they wanted to hear the rest of the story.
"ARE YOU SERIOUSLY COMPLAINING?" She snarled back at him.
"ME COMPLAINING!! YOU'RE THE ONE ALWAYS CALLING ME A SLUT AND IT TURNS OUT YOU AREN'T THE PURE PRINCESS YOU ACT LIKE!"
"PURE PRINCESS?!? Really Black an alliteration?"
"And that's why you deserve that nickname-"
"Because you're an idiot-"
"I'M NOT THE IDIOT WHO CHEATED ON HER BOYFRIEND-"
"YOU'RE THE ONE WHO ALWAYS CHEATS!"
"I'VE NEVER CHEATED-"
"MAYBE THAT'S BECAUSE YOU CAN'T KEEP A RELATIONSHIP LONGER THAN ONE NIGHT!"
"No need to be jealous Rogers. It's not my fault I'm better in bed and you're now a single virgin"
"MAYBE IF YOU DEFLATED YOUR HEAD YOU SEE WHAT AN IGNORANT TOOL YOU ARE!"
"NOW YOU SOUND LIKE EVANS, GOD PICK A PERSONALITY WOULD YOU"
"BLACK MAYBE YOU SHOULD TAKE A PAGE FROM JAMES' BOOK!"
"I don't really want to be whipped thank you very much"
"I COULD WHIP YOU SO HARD-"
"Damn that's hot. See I know you want me-"
"WANT YOU! WHO WANTS AN ARROGANT JERK?!?"
"You did last week." And with that Sirius walked off into his dorm. Leaving Hailey in a fit of rage on the couch. That's when the murmurs and rumors started. Hailey could hear bits and pieces of it all "They kissed?" "No I think they slept together" "She wouldn't" "But he was totally her rebound" "they were hanging out a lot" "But he said she was a virgin" "Beats me" Hailey couldn't take it anymore so she stormed off into her dorm.
The noise level in the common room was so high nobody noticed when head girl and boy walked in. Except Melanie Forester, she saw the red hair and wanted to be the first to ask her about it. She made a b-line to Lily and abruptly asked, "So what's going on with Sirius and Hailey?"
Lily slightly take aback by the question just crooked her head confused. James on the other hand had to act casual and looking at Lily he realized she didn't know anything about it. Melanie knew she's hit the gossip jackpot so she added, "Oh you didn't know they slept together?" And with one simple comment the gossip mill spiraled out of control.
Hailey sat on her bed in a fit of fury, but also feeling the a bit of a loss. She sat there thinking almost peaceful until Lily cam storming through the door.
"YOU DID WHAT NOW?!?"
Hailey just looked at her. She had no idea what Lily was talking about exactly since there were a couple of things Lily didn't know and Hailey wasn't about to spill without her being specific.
"Don't look at me like that! I was just informed that you SLEPT with BLACK!"
Now this wasn't what Hailey had expected, she almost laughed out of shock but decided that wouldn't help calm down Lily. So all she could say was, "Lily I didn't sleep with him..." she kind of left it hanging because they had gotten pretty close to it. Lily noticed and gave Hailey a look that screamed "SPILL" So she did Hailey told her all about her "relationship" with Sirius. She told her about how he made her heart skip a beat, and how she thought it wouldn't last bit wanted it too. She explained that that was the reason she ran back to Jason because she'd thought they would last. Finally she told Lily that Jason broke up with her and that's why she'd snapped at Sirius.
After a short pause Lily realized her story was over and she should probably say something so she did, "You should probably apologize."
Hailey knew Lily was right but she still didn't feel like she was at fault for this fight. It was his fault he started it. "Potter has gotten to you hasn't he? You want me to apologies to Black for a fight that he started!" Hailey asked almost sarcastic.
"Hailey don't be childish-"
"I'm not being childish I'm being hurt!"
They looked at each other for a second and then Lily said, "Just take the high road it's a lot easier." With that their argument ended and they changed the topic. Lily had known she was right about them since she was never wrong but she did have a clue as to how it would play out.
Across the tower Remus had busted the door the same way Lily had.
"WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME!"
Sirius knew there were a lot of things he could be referring to so he said nothing. He was too angry at Hailey to use his common sense on this one.
"DON'T PLAY DUMB WITH ME! YOU KISSED HAILEY!"
This got Sirius angry he couldn't see why his friend was siding with the enemy. So he yelled back, "MOONY YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND YOU CAN'T BE JEALOUS OF-"
"THIS ISN'T ALWAYS ABOUT YOU! I'M NOT JEALOUS BUT I DO CARE ABOUT HAILEY AND I DON'T WANT HER TO GET HURT AGAIN!"
Sirius just stared at him. He took a moment to regain composure and when he was finally calm he told Remus, "You still don't trust me. I haven't hooked up with a girl in months-"
"you were hooking up with Hailey-"
"I was going to ask her to be my girlfriend today. Like publicly." Sirius announced taking Remus by surprise. There was silence as the words set in. Sirius stared down at the flour and Remus stared open mouthed at him. This was a first. They sat in silence until Sirius stood up and muttered, "Not anymore."
The next morning when Sirius left his dorm he was attacked my a swarm of girl. They were like paparazzi asking him every question about Hailey. He was so angry he tried to answer every question in a way that would bother Hailey the most. He was in such a fit of rage until he saw her come out of her dorm. Hailey and Sirius shared a look, partly apologetic, partly full of hate, partly annoyed, partly exhausted and partly just happy to see each other. That look before anyone could have seen it. Melanie notice Hailey and took the opportunity to ask Sirius loud enough so that Hailey could hear. "Did you sleep with Hailey?"
Sirius thought about it for a second he knew Hailey would be furious if he said yes and that made him want to. But he also knew that she would never forgive him and he couldn't do live like that. After a few more seconds of thinking, he made a decision and answered without any emotion in his voice, "No, we were never a thing I just kissed her once when I was drunk."
Hailey let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding in. She was so relieved Sirius had covered it up, but she couldn't just forgive him like that. She looked over at him and he saw in her eyes relief and hurt, anger and thankfulness. It was a look he could never forget because it scared him beyond belief and kept him sane at the same time. Little did he know that he would be receiving the same look a mere fifteen year later.
~flash forward fifteen years~
"Remus I understand that the order must met somewhere secret, but why of all the secret places in the world did they have to choose ... this?" Hailey Wood felt very uncomfortable where she was sitting, cobwebs hung above her and the scent of dust and moldy woods hung in the stuffy room. It was places like this she had specifically been avoiding for the past decade. Their were to many bad memories associated with 12 grimmauld place. The only thing keeping Hailey from leaving was Remus' company, though I pained her to admit she had missed him.
"The others should be arriving soon, and we won't be here for long." Remus reassured her. He look at the Hailey in front of him, remembering the Hailey he knew so well he realized how much she'd changed. Over the years she had lost the glint of joy in her eyes and her smile wasn't as wide as it had once been. However she was even more beautiful than she had ever been, the years had been good to her. Hailey looked at Remus noticing the white hairs he had growing in and regreting not getting together with him for the past decade. They both sat in a comfortable silence for a couple of seconds when a familiar voice interrupted it.
"So I don't even count as a person anymore? Or were you just pretending I wasn't here?"
Hailey froze. Remus felt very awkward he tried to formulate a respond but didn't know what to say. Hailey focused on her breathing and once her heartrate had slowed down she slowly turned around to look at the man the voice belonged to. It was then that they shared the same look, Sirius recognized it and felt the same contradicting feelings. They continued to stare at one and other in amazement.
