"It’s Mr Jacobs-he’s Lucius." Hermione gasped for breath as the wind was knocked out of her.
"Mr Jacobs? Are you sure?" He furrowed his eyebrows.
"I'm pretty sure of it. We have potions tomorrow, if I can get close enough I’ll have another look and then we can look at his desk or something?" she put her face in her hands.
"Alright, c’mon, let’s get to bed." He put his arm around her and led her to his bedroom.
"I was thinking, I can quickly make a potion that will make us telepathically connected before class, so if we need to talk about anything we can. Its only temporary, but it will last for class?" Hermione asked..
It was now morning, and they had both risen early to revise, when the idea popped into Hermione’s head.
"If you want, but how are you going to make it?"
"Well, I know which ingredients to use and I know the instructions. Maybe I can imagine them here and they’ll show up?" Hermione closed her eyes, and did so. "Apparently it works." She said as many vials appeared in front of her.
She quickly went up to her bedroom, and appeared back with a cauldron.
"You have a cauldron?" he raised an eyebrow.
"Obviously! How else would I practise potions?" she gave him a who-do-you-think-I-am? look.
"Work your magic"
Hermione started pouring many different vials and after a while of mixing, mini explosions and a lot of steam, Hermione turned to Draco, handing him a pin. "I need you to pinch your finger and put in a drop of your blood in, I'll do the same."
She pricked her middle finger with the pin, and let a drop of blood drop into the cauldron, causing steam to flare out.
"Are you sure it’s safe?" Draco peered into the cauldron cautiously.
"Yes, I spoke to Dumbledore before you woke: he said its completely safe."
"Alright." He took the pin and copied Hermione’s actions.
The potion turned a deep purple in colour, Hermione poured some into two tiny vials and gave one to Draco.
"Are you sure you want to drink it? We will be connected via our minds, so you can’t hide anything" she smirked.
"I'm sure, anything to stop Lucius." He poured the contents of the vial down his throat and Hermione did the same.
Draco closed his eyes, a headache appearing. He reopened them and saw pain etched on Hermione’s face.
She opened her eyes, and saw a white thin whispery line from her head intertwining with another thin whispery line from Draco’s. They finally connected, and flew back to each other.
‘Hermione? ‘ Draco furrowed his eyebrows.
Hermione jumped. "I guess it works." She smiled. "It’s hard to do, to make that potion.’’
"Alright, alright." He smirked. "C’mon, time for breakfast."
"Don’t forget, you can’t sit with us still, I hate you, remember?" she smirked.
"Oh yes, shame. Looks like I’ll have to talk to you via our minds. You go ahead, Ill speak to you there." He opened the portrait. "Go on."
"Alright." She went on her tiptoes, and kissed him lightly on the cheek before walking away.
’BOO!’ Draco thought, making Hermione jump.
"Yes?" Hermione carried on walking, then turned left into the Great Hall.
"Nothing." Draco smirked to himself as he left the common room.
Hermione sat down at the table. Looking over, she saw Lavender with her tongue down down Ron’s throat.
"I see they’re back together then Gin?" Hermione asked the girl sitting opposite her.
"Yep. That’s’ all they ever do in the common room." Ginny said with a face of disgust.
Hermione jumped. ’I keep forgetting you’re here. Anyway, you’ll see when you come in.’
‘I gathered! Alright, I’ll be in, in a second.’
"What’s wrong, Hermione?" Ginny raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, nothing." She looked over to the door and saw Draco walk in.
’Oh, that is disgusting.’
‘ I know. ‘
Hermione started pouring cereal into her bowl.
"So Hermione, have you spoken to Malfoy yet?" Ginny asked.
"Only civilly now."
Ginny beamed. "That’s better than nothing!"
"Do you still like him?"
If only she knew. "Yes"
‘Only she knew what?’
"Have you told him?"
‘She asked me if I still liked you.’
"No, I don’t think I will."
‘What did you say?'
‘I said yes’
"Because I don’t know if I want to or not." Hermione sighed.
Hermione snorted. ‘Nice?’
"Mione?" Ginny raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, I was just laughing at Ronald." The two girls turned to look at Ron who had food smudged across his forehead.
Ginny burst out laughing, "Ron, you have something on your forehead."
Ron wiped the back of his hand across his forehead. "Thanks."
‘What did you expect me to say? ‘
"Guys, lets get to class." Hermione got out of her seat and the others followed.
‘Forget it. We’re going to potions now.’
‘Alright, were leaving now. Try and get close enough to him to look into his eyes.
"Harry, you don’t have to stand right next to me." Hermione said, nudging her friend in the side, smiling.
"I know, I'm just worried."
"I know, but I'm fine. I can handle myself." She smiled.
They walked into potions and Hermione took a quick glance at Mr Jacobs' desk.
Didn’t see anything that you described. It’s all just a mess’ .
’Yes, take a look when you walk in.'
Hermione took her seat, and watched as Draco came into the room, looked at the desk and took his seat next to her.
’Damn. Alright, now one of us is going to have to get close enough. He won’t do anything in here, too many witnesses, and by the time he obliviated everyone’s memories, someone would have noticed.’
‘That’s true. Alright.’
"Alright class, you are free to go over any potion that you want in preparation for your exam. Don’t forget, in your exam, you will only have an hour and a half to prepare and create your potion, so don’t pick one that is too long." He turned back to reading a book.
We have to act like we are being civil to each other. That’s what I told Ginny.
"Granger, while you’re getting your ingredients, get mine too." Draco said aloud, then added, "please."
"Fine." Hermione rolled her eyes and walked over to the shelf.
As she was collecting different ingredients, she saw that Professor Jacobs was walking over to the shelf she was standing in front of.
"Ahh, Hermione Granger, I see you’re making Veritaserum. Am I correct? he said, peering at the the vials.
"And Mr Malfoy is making the same I presume?"
"Yes, he said it was easy for him to make."
‘I said you’re making the same as me, Veritaserum, as it was easy for you to make.’
"Ah. Mr Malfoy is a smart lad, I'm sure he will manage perfectly." He smiled at Hermione.
Hermione finally took her eyes off the shelf, and looked into Mr Jacobs eyes. Grey, Stony grey.
’It’s the colour.’
"Anything else Miss Granger?" he shifted his tie back up and raised an eyebrow.
"Um. no sir." She nodded and walked back to her desk.
‘Are you sure? We can’t go accusing teachers.’
’Shall I tell Harry?’ Hermione thought to Draco while starting on her potion.
’I think that’s best.
I’ll go tell him now.’ Hermione put down her vial and walked over to Harry slowly, trying not to catch the imposter’s eye.
"Harry, can I talk to you for a moment?" Hermione pulled him away, a calm look on her face.
"What is it?" Harry furrowed his eyebrows.
"It’s Mr Jacobs, don’t ask me how I know, but I know. Bring the rest of the order to our common room tonight straight after the last class." Harry turned and looked at Mr Jacobs, who was staring at them, lips pursed.
"Okay. Don’t keep looking at him. He’s looking at us."
"Alright, now laugh when I walk away."
"Bye Harry." They both laughed as she walked back to her seat.
’Did you tell him?’
’I told him to bring the others to the common room after last class.’
’Uh, great, another evening with scar-head and Weasel.’
‘Hey! Don’t be harsh. Call them by their names.’
‘Fine, Potter and Weasley.’
‘That’s good enough.’
The two carried on making their potion, when an idea struck Hermione.
’Draco, look at what we are making. What if we accidently put some in his pumpkin juice, then ask him some questions?’
Draco turned and looked at Hermione wide-eyed,
’Isn’t that illegal?’
C’mon, like you haven’t done anything illegal before! It’s necessary…’
‘Yes, but it’s you, Hermione! You don’t do wrong!’
‘Sometimes you have to do the wrong thing, to do what is right.’ She looked at him, raising an eyebrow.
’I'm done; want me to put a bit in a vial?’
Hermione took in a deep breath. ‘Yes.’
She watched as Draco poured a drop into a vial and quickly walked over to Mr Jacob’s desk while he was talking to Harry. Harry saw Draco walking to his desk, raising an eyebrow, he looked at Hermione, but she simply nodded at Mr Jacobs and made an action with her hand, to keep him talking.
Draco managed to make it to the desk and he quickly poured the clear liquid into the pumpkin juice, tucked the vile into a robe pocket and made his way back to Hermione, who nodded at Harry.
"I’ll stay behind after class, asking him if he knows any potions that I could use to protect myself...I’ll bring it up that way." Hermione said, barely above a whisper.
"Okay, class finishes now anyway."
As soon as Draco said this, Mr Jacobs returned to his desk, taking a sip of his pumpkin juice before telling everyone to bring a vial of their potion to the desk on their way out.
Hermione held back and slowly poured some of her concoction into her vial. She waited until everyone was out of the room before taking it to the desk.
"Ah Miss Granger, that’s perfect, thank you." He smiled, as she put down the vial.
"Professor, can I ask you something?"
"Yes?" he sat down, taking another sip of his juice.
"Well, I was just worried about this whole Lucius situation. I was wondering if you know any potions that I could use to protect myself."
"Ah. I'm afraid, that’s more spells than potions. Although I do wish there was a potion for that, it would be a pleasure to do so, but I'm afraid there isn’t. Why are you so worried about Lucius? You’re a smart young woman, you would be able to defend yourself."
"But we don’t know who it is! It could be anyone!" Hermione watched him carefully, he showed no suspicious signs.
"It could. But I know one thing is for sure, it’s not me!" he winked, "Right, off to class Miss Granger, I don’t want you getting into trouble!" he ushered her out the room.
"Okay, thank you anyway Professor." She smiled, and walked out of the dungeons.
She closed the door behind her, deflated.
If it’s not him, then who is it?
‘Its’ not him?’ Draco’s thoughts sounded panicked.
’Oh, I forgot you were in here, no its not.’
She turned the corner and saw Draco leaning against the wall, he turned his head after hearing movement and saw Hermione.
"What do you mean it’s not him?" he looked at her wide-eyed.
"It’s not. I'll show you and the others the memory later" All of this figuring out was tiring her, Hermione thought it would all stop when Voldemort was killed; she was quickly being proven wrong.
The day passed by slowly, all day Hermione kept going over their suspicions, going over what Mr Jacobs had said to her and who else it could be, but she came up with nothing and that is what bothered her the most.
"There has to be something I'm missing! She said as she slammed her door shut, she had just spent the last twenty minutes lying on her bed, going over the day’s events.
"I'm sure you will figure it out soon. You always do." Harry said; the rest of the order had arrived not long ago.
"I know, but it’s frustrating. I’ve gone over everything and it all leads to a dead end." she said as she sat down next to Ginny.
"What actually happened?" Ginny asked.
"You can see the memory; I found a pensive last month while tidying." Hermione walked over to the book shelf and pulled down on a certain book, the book shelf swung open and behind, was a variety of different flasks and on the very top shelf, was a round silver pensive, similar to the one Dumbledore owned. Hermione reached to the top shelf, picked it up, and spun it, so it gently hovered over to the coffee table. Hermione put her wand to her temple, and focused on the memory and soon felt it being released from her mind. She opened her eyes and saw a silver whispery line hanging on to the tip of her wand. She carefully put her wand above the basin, and flicked it. Everyone bent over, as they saw the memory turn to black.
Hermione watched as one by one, they entered the memory. It was a weird feeling, everyone watching something that is in your mind.
It was another five minutes before everyone came back,
"I just don’t get it. It would have made sense if it was him, with the whole eyes thing but it’s not" Harry trailed off.
Hermione crossed her arms in frustration. "What are we going to do now?"
"I have no idea, but let’s get going to dinner." Ron said.
"Alright, I’ve just got to meet Blaise." Draco said, he had started to sit with them again as he realised he got on with Harry better than he cared to admit.
They all left the common room and started to walk back when Hermione gasped.
"What? What is it?" Neville raised an eyebrow.
"I forgot my wand."
"I’ll come with you Hermione." Harry started to walk back with her.
"No, no it’s fine. Our common room is just around the corner, Ill be five minutes, wait for me here." She smiled, and started to walk hastily back to her common room.
‘You forgot your wand? Clever.’
‘My mind is on other things at the moment.’
‘I know, me too, obviously, but your wand?’
‘If you think so. Go talk to Blaise.’
Hermione reached her common room, rushed in and picked up her wand and put it in her robe pocket. She left, and started walking back to the group, she turned a corner and was faced with something on the wall opposite her. She walked forward to the other end of the corridor, and started to read the red letters.
I know you’re looking, but where is wrong.
Here in this riddle a clue lies, open the riddle and you will find me.
Unravel my secrets and find me by ten, Granger.
Or I will pick your friends off.
One, by, one.
"What does this mean?" she spoke out loud, not wanting to let Draco know.
She muttered the riddle a couple of times over, and ran back to the common room,. She quickly grabbed a piece of parchment, a quill and some ink and wrote down the riddle, and sat down re-reading it.
"There’s a clue in this riddle. What could it be?" she quickly recited it a couple of times, and got up, sighing, knowing she had to meet Harry and the others again.
As she walked, she remembered something. "Riddle. Tom Riddle? What if it has something to do with Tom Riddle? Secrets!" she gasped, "He’s hiding in the chamber of secrets! I need the password!"
"So what’s going on with you and Hermione?" Blaise asked, as him ad Draco walked to the heads common room.
"Uh nothing at the moment."
"Do you miss her?"
Draco didn’t reply, he thought he heard Hermione.
"Draco?" Blaise raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, what?" he focused back on his friend.
"I said do you miss her?" They entered the common room and sat down.
Hermione ran through the corridors, she wanted to see Lucius, she could handle herself. She eventually reached the girls bathroom, and ran down to the sink which Ron had taken her too the previous year. She hissed, hoping it would open the chamber and it did. Hermione smiled as she only copied what Ron had done the previous year. She went down, and ten minutes later, she found herself in the chamber.
She looked around and saw the familiar snake heads, when a figure stepped out in front of her.
"Ahh, Granger you came." He smirked.
"Yes." She faced him, frozen.
"I’ve waited for this moment for a long time."
"You’ve changed." Hermione tried to stall him.
"Excuse me?" he stepped a couple of paces forward.
"You never use to be like this, wicked and nefarious, yes, but not mad.
"The war changes people, and I have a right to be mad. A FILTHY MUDBLOOD LIKE YOU with my son."
Hermione truly looked at Lucius, his hair was scruffy and frizzy. He had a rough stubble which was growing out of control and his face had grown sunken. His eyes moved around frantically, trying to figure out what Hermione was doing.
‘’Lucius, you cant help…who you like.’’
‘’Yes, you can!’’
‘’You don’t have to do this! You can go back to Azkaban, maybe be Narcissa?’’
‘’How do you know about Narcissa?’’ Lucius pointed her want back at Hermione.
‘’I’ve been there, I’ve seen her.’’
‘’YOU’VE BEEN TO SEE HER?’’ Lucius’ face went bright red with anger, ‘’IM GOING TO KILL YOU!’’
"Do it then, kill me." She opened her arms, surrendering herself.
"Not just yet." He let out an evil laugh. "No, you will suffer first.
"STUPIFY!" she aimed at him, and ran, she ran as quickly as she could, out of the chamber and back out into the bathroom.
She looked around back to where she came from and heard a loud, angry scream. She started to run back to her common room- no one without the password could get in. She heard him behind her; she shot back defence spells, just as she saw a green flash miss her by millimetres.
She soon reached the common room, and quickly said the password, "Dumbledore, STALL HIM!" she said as she climbed through the portrait hole. She ran into the common room and doubled over in pain, one of the spells had hit her, and now the back of her leg was bleeding badly.
She heard shouting coming from Draco’s room, she limped up the stairs and was about to barge through, when she heard what was being said.
"I said do you miss her?"
"Yes I do. But I'm not going to do anything."
‘’That you two are back together.’’
Draco frowned, "How?" Draco’s heart sped up.
"It’s obvious, the way you too look at each other. Do you love her?"
"What did you just ask me?"
"I asked if you loved her?"
"I'm not going to answer that." Draco furrowed his eyebrows, and stared out his windows, resting against the window sill.
"You do though, admit it!" Blaise smirked.
"NO!" He turned around, angry at Blaise for asking him.
"Why not?" Blaise was thoroughly confused as to why he wasn’t admitting it.
"I don’t understand!"
"BECAUSE THE LAST TIME I ADMITED I LOVE SOMEONE, SHE DIED. I'M NOT LETTING HERMIONE DIE!" he turned back around
"HA! You do!" Blaise grinned.
"YES! Is that what you wanted?"
"Why do you even care?" anger was still burning through him.
"So I can tell Lucius if the girl doesn’t surrender herself."
"What?" Draco asked, and walked forward to Blaise.
"You heard me."
"How long has Blaise been dead Kleydor?" Draco stood back, finally realising who was standing before him.
"He died in the war. His body was never found, I got rid of it particularly well, I thought it would be the perfect person to interpret."
The person who stood in front of Draco was changing shape. The man who now stood, was at least six feet tall, he had dry black hair that was down to his ear lobes. His eyes were brown something about him screamed evil.
"All this time you made us believe Blaise was alive." Draco showed no emotion, his face was fixed like stone.
"Ahh and the Dark Lord thought I wasn’t good enough for anything. If only he knew what I was going to do now." He laughed, it was the cruellest laugh Draco ever heard, in his opinion, it was worse than Voldemort's.
"STUPIFY!" Draco shouted at Kleydor, and Kleydor flew back, knocking his head on Draco’s drawers. Kleydor slumped to the ground, knocked out.
Draco doubled over, when he heard his bedroom door burst open, he stood back up, and saw Hermione enter the room.
"Hermione, what’s wrong?" Draco saw the cut on the back of her leg, and quickly healed it.
"It’s Lucius, I found him, he’s coming here. He was in the Chamber." Hermione doubled over, in pain from being shot with many spells.
"Wait, what chamber?"
"Of secrets. He was in the Chamber of Secrets. I went there, he said he would start killing people if I didn’t go." Hermione managed to say in between breaths.
Draco shook his head, confused.
"How did you know?"
"It doesn’t matter now, he’s coming here. I went there, I managed to stall him slightly and get away. He’s coming."
Draco looked at her, towards the door, then back at Hermione. He put his hands on her cheek, and kissed her like it would be the last time he would be able to do, he quickly pulled back.
"I won’t let him win, good always defeats evil. Let Potter and the rest know with a patronus."
Hermione sent her patronus, and then turned back to Draco after hearing a blast at the common room painting.
"He’s here." Draco whispered.
The pair stood by the door, armed with their wands, when Lucius strode into the common room.
"Ahh Draco, I see the little Mudblood told you of my plans." Lucius smirked.
"Leave her alone, kill me, not her. Leave Hermione alone."
Hermione winced. No!
‘I have to. I can’t let you die. Without you, I am nothing.’
"Ahh, son, I don’t think I will be doing that Lucius started walking towards them, wand out.
Draco and Hermione backed into Draco’s room and stood by the window.
"What are you going to do first?" Hermione asked.
"This." Lucius flicked his wand, and sent Hermione flying to the corner, she couldn’t move.
Draco looked in horror at Hermione, then he looked back at his father. "NO!" Draco pointed his wand at Lucius.
"I dare you." Lucius let out a laugh.
"I will, I swear. You have caused too much stress, upset and anger this year. I will finish you off personally." Draco heard Hermione wince.
"I want to kill the mudblood, I dont want to have to kill my own son as well."
"WHY? WHY DO YOU WANT TO KILL HER?" Draco shouted.
"SHE DESERVES TO DIE. ALL MUDBLOODS DO. SHE TAINTED YOU, FROM THIRD YEAR SHE HAS DONE SO."
"LET HER GO, KILL ME INSTEAD. JUST LEAVE HER BE!"
"I will have no son of mine date a mudblood, or did you forget what I did last time?"
Draco flinched. "No, I won’t let you repeat history!"
"Oh, I will." Lucius laughed.
Draco acted quickly, ''STUPIFY!'' but instead of Lucius flying back, Draco's wand backfired, and he flew back instead, hitting his head on the window.
'Pathetic, his own wand backfired on him. I didnt even have to do anything myself.'' Lucius laughed.
Hermione watched the events happen in front of her, she saw Draco lying on the floor, so helpless.
‘Draco, Draco can you hear me?’
‘Yes.’ She heard him, but he was faint.
‘Im coming, stay awake.’
Hermione mustered all her energy and summoned all of the magic inside her, she screamed, releasing out her magic, freeing her from her body bind hex.
She took a deep breath, "STUPIFY! PETRIFICUS TOTALUS!" Hermione screamed at Lucius. He flew back, and was now lying by Kleydor’s side.
Hermione looked at Lucius, and then ran over to Draco.
"Draco, Draco!" she held him, and put her hand behind his head, she felt something sticky. She pulled her hand back, and saw blood.
"NO! No, no, no." Hermione looked at him.
"Hermione..." Draco opened his eyes, "Hermione, listen to me." He watched as Hermione started to cry, "Hermione, did you hear the conversation between me and Kleydor?" his voice was faint, barely above a whisper. Hermione nodded, sniffing. "Hermione, I love you. I’ve loved you for a long time. I'm sorry I never told you before." His breath got heavier.
"Oh Draco, I love you too." She laughed and looked back down at him, his eyes were closed, his chest rose and fell but didn’t rise.
"Draco? she shook him, eyes wide and tears started to fall, but he didn’t respond. "Draco?" she put his head back down and put her ear to his chest and listened for his heartbeat, but she couldn’t hear it. ‘’No, Draco please wake up, please, please wake up.’’ Hermione’s eyes started to sting, tears building up in her eyes, "NO, I WILL NOT LET YOU DIE, I JUST GOT YOU BACK!" She put him flat on the floor, and put her hands on his chest, above his heart, and started pressing down in threes. "Draco, Draco wake up."
She pulled her hands back and put her head back to his chest, nothing. She put her lips to his, and gave him mouth to mouth. Again and again she blew into his mouth, hoping and praying to hear his voice once more.
She pulled back, all the air in her was gone, she had no energy left. She looked at the lifeless body in front of her, and screamed,
"WHY?" she started to sob. She looked at Draco once more, mustering all the energy in her, and formed a fist with both her hands. She positioned her hands above Draco’s heart once more, and slammed down on his chest, hoping the momentum would help. She looked at him, nothing.
She closed her eyes, when she heard a gasp and some coughing, she opened her eyes and saw Draco’s chest rising and falling.
"Thank Merlin." She took his body, and wrapped arms around him, holding him, letting her tears fall.
Madame Pomfrey rushed over to the bedside where Hermione, Harry, Ginny, Ron, Neville and Luna stood by Draco.
"What is the damage?" Hermione said, taking Draco’s hand.
"I'm afraid dear, that he has swelling on the brain, so we had to put him in an induced coma until the swelling has subsided. We don’t know how long it’s going to take. It could take days, weeks, or even months. Im sorry dear."
