Through the Crystal Ball

You couldn’t help but be amazed at how quickly a week has passed with Draco coming every day. Less than two months ago, you would have been shouting death threats at anyone who tried to wake you up earlier than 11:00. Now you were waking up at 6:00 every morning in order to be ready for another tutoring session.

“Great. Now I’m falling for my tutor.” You mumble.

But at least he’s dead sexy.

“No!”

Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.

“Grrr…shut up! it’s not true!”

Yes it is.

“No!”

You know I’m right. You are falling for Draco. Admit it!

“Never! You’re wrong!”

I’m your conscience. I’m always right.

“Ugh. Just – go away, stupid conscience!”

“Talking to yourself, ___________?”

You whirl around to see Draco leaning on your doorframe of your study, a smirk plastered on his face.

“I know, I know. The first sign of insanity is talking to yourself… does that include arguing with your conscience?” you ask, a cheeky grin growing on your face. Draco smirks and rolls his eyes at you.

“Enough, _________.” He says as he saunters over to the desk you are sitting at.

“Now, you know how you told me about all of your interesting dreams?”

You nod for him to continue.

“Well, I think you might be a seer.” He finishes. Your eyes widen considerably. He just shrugs.

“It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. The dreams are all just visions of the future.”

“Or flashbacks of the past.” You add. Draco nods.

“That’s why today we’re going to study Divination. Can you get two cups of tea?”

“Yeah.”

You clap your hands sharply. Immediately, Tipsy comes into the study.

“Tipsy, get us two cups of tea.”

“Yes, Miss Reiley. Anything else Tipsy can get for you?”

“No, that’s fine.” Tipsy nods and snaps her fingers; the teacups immediately appearing on the desk.

“Thanks. You may go now.” Tipsy nods and exits the room. You and Draco drink your tea in silence.

“Alright, when you’re finished, swirl the cup three times.”

You nod and turn the cup. Draco sets down his cup. He then retreats to the armchair where his book bag is lying. He pulls out a large white book and returns to the chair by you.

“Unfogging the Future. The earth’s most dull book full of the barmiest made-up lies ever. But maybe you will actually understand this.” He states. You open it to the chapter of tea leaf reading and skim the first couple of paragraphs.

“Hmmm… can I see your cup?” you ask. Draco nods and hands his cup to you.

You look into the cup and back to the book.

“Blimey. Look at all of this! Okay, you have the serpent, which represents power… there’s a thorn – well, I think it’s a thorn – which is pain. There’s the sun, which is happiness… odd…pain and happiness… are you a masochist? No, don’t answer that… Oh! And the owl, which indicates a search… for something… no, wait- there’s a moon. Maybe… yup. You’re searching for love. How cute. Then there’s the cross which means trials and suffering. You have the acorn which is good health. You’ve got the dragon, which is anger and jealousy. There’s the dagger which is betrayal… and… yeah. That’s it.” You finish analyzing Draco’s cup and turn to look at him to find him staring at you in disbelief.

“Why are you looking at me like that? Did I do something wrong?”

“No, no, no. it’s just, that was more than Trelawney ever told me. Is there a grim in there? That’s what she always told me that she saw.”

You pick his cup back up.

“Yeah, there’s a grim… that would mean death. But no one’s immortal! That would mean that the grim is in every cup!”

“Alright, since you had no problem doing tea-leaf reading, lets move on to palmistry.”

You flip to the next chapter in the large book.

“Let me see you left hand.” You mutter, looking over the chapter. Draco reluctantly sticks out his hand. You quickly glance at a diagram on the page and grab his wrist.

“Alrighty, your life line is pretty straight. That means you have limited endurance. Well, I could have told you that… your head line is relatively long, enabling you to focus well. Whoa- you’ve got a long heart line! No one-night stands for you, Drake. A long heart line means that you expect more when regarding love and relationships…”

“What? Which one’s the heart line?”

You trace the long line stretching across the top of Draco’s palm, smirking at him as he looks from his palm to the book and back to his palm again.

“ANYWAYS, give me back your hand… okay, your fate line is all crooked…that means that you don’t have much control over your life and its circumstances. But it’s pretty long, so that means you can handle responsibility well. And… hmm… you don’t have an Apollo line… so, that’s it.” You finish awkwardly, letting go of his wrist.

“What’s the Apollo line?” You point to a paragraph in Unfogging the Future.

The Apollo Line: Sometimes known as the Line of the Sun, this line measures inner contentment. Not everyone has an Apollo Line, but when it appears it’s a sign of a capacity to enjoy life and derive satisfaction from work. It is believed to indicate good luck.

Draco just stares at you for awhile before shaking his head slightly.

“So, you really think I’m a seer?” you ask.

“No. I KNOW you’re a seer. Your two descriptions were more than Professor Trelawney has ever told me, and this will be my 5th year in her class.”

You’re too shocked to say anything. Draco continues.

“Well, since you have already covered what I was going to teach you, I might as well give you this.” He says, while lazily pulling something out of his cloak pocket and placing it in your hand. You look to find a small glass orb no bigger than your palm. Inside is a milky liquid swirling around.

“Wow. But-” you start, but Draco holds up a hand to silence you.

“It’s a crystal ball. I got in Knockturn Alley. Just think of it as part of your birthday present.” And by the look on your face, Draco smiled genuinely at you – something you had found that he does rarely.

“But- wait… how did – no, never mind.” You sputter.

“I know when your birthday is – you told me the second day I met you. And this is the early part of your gift. I have something for you planned for you later.” He says, winking mischievously at you. You can’t help but grin excitedly.

“Now, let’s think of a topic to concentrate on envisioning.”

“Okay, er… I’m at a loss. Weather?”

“No.”

“Okay, um… friends?”

“Alright, that’s good enough.”

You nod and close your eyes momentarily before opening them and looking into the crystal ball. The liquid in it swirls before creating images right before our eyes.

First, an image of Draco’s head comes into view. It winks saucily at you before disappearing and turning into an image of another boy’s head. He has black unruly hair, a scar on his forehead like a lightning bolt, and large green eyes. He smiles kindly before turning into the grinning image of Faye Parkinson, your best friend before you had met Draco. Soon enough, her image is replaced by a boy with light brown hair down to his earlobes that curled at the bottom and large chocolate brown eyes. The image swirls a final time to disappear and the milky liquid stops churning violently.

You blink once. Twice. Three times.

“Wow.” You whisper softly, turning the crystal ball in your hands.

“That was definitely interesting. I saw only flashes though. There was me, Blaise, and Potter. And a girl I didn’t recognize.”

“Faye. The girl is Faye Parkinson – my only other friend.” You explain. Draco sighs.

“How is it that Potter will be a friend of yours? He’s my archrival.”

“Which one is he?”

“The one with black hair, green eyes and the ugly scar.”

“I know how he will be my friend. I saw it in a dream a week ago.” You say quietly.

You and Draco sit in an uncomfortable silence for awhile before he stands up and looks at you.

“Fancy a walk? We’ve already done everything I was going to cover.” He holds out a hand to help you up. You take it.

“Sure. Let’s go outside.” You say quickly, your hand still tingling where Draco had grabbed it.

You two walk out in silence and towards the lake that was located behind the manor.

You sit on a large boulder beside Draco. You two sit and talk for hours on
end about every random topic – family, friends, school, think you like, things you hate… and Quidditch.

You had hurled a rock in the lake, sending it flying 40 feet in the air and landing with a splash in the lake.

“You’d make a good chaser.” Draco drawled, looking in awe at the distance you had thrown the rock.

“Chaser? You mean, like Quidditch?”

“Yes. Wait- how do you know about Quidditch?”

You shrug.

“One night you had left your book bag so I grabbed this one of the history of Hogwarts and it mentioned Quidditch.”

Draco nodded.

“Maybe you should try out for a position on your house team.”

“Yeah, I’d like that.”

“If you get in Slytherin, you’d get one the team in an instant. Maybe we could even beat the bloody Gryffindors for once.”

Draco then launches into how ‘Potter’ always caught the snitch first.

After his story, or long complaint, you notice that the sun had begun to set.

“Alright, let’s head up. If not, I’ll have Richard to deal with.” You inform Draco. He nods.

“And I’ll have Lucius to deal with. What do you think about going to Diagon Alley tomorrow to get out supplies?”

“Okay, I’ll be ready at 7.”

And as you watch Draco disappear into the emerald flames, you can’t help but look forward to tomorrow.

I’ve found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you.
I’ve found a reason to show
A side of me you didn’t know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you…

Now, did everyone like that chapter? It was mainly to get the point across that you are a seer. Fun stuff, right? The song is ‘The Reason’ by Hoobastank. You see, I was listening to the radio and trying to think of a song for this chapter and it sort of fits. Anyways, I’m feeling like doing something different so I’m going to give you guys a teaser for the next chapter…

Next Chapter: you go to Diagon Alley with Draco to get your supplies; you meet Harry, Ron, and Hermione too… and you get to ogle mindlessly at the broomsticks at QQS. Here’s a sneak peek:

“Drake?”

“Hmm?”

“Tell everyone to stop staring. It’s sort of unnerving.”

You hear him sigh and quickly turn his face up in a sneer.

“What do you find so interesting?” he drawls loudly, sending seething glares at the passersby’s. “Despite what you may think, I do not demand silence upon entry.” He finishes. You smirk.

“Well, despite what YOU think, Malfoy, the people here are allowed to do what they please, even if it means ogling you.” A voice calls from the crowd.

Cool, huh? Chocolate frogs to who guesses the owner of the voice from the crowd…
