Shall I set the scene for you? Or more importantly should I set the girl?
Her name is Cora Greengrass and she is the bane to my existence. The perfect little rich girl, Straight O student, perfect hair - Malfoy’s cousin and most importantly Slytherin’s keeper and captain:
Today was the game of the season. The most anticipated game: The Quidditch Cup.
What makes it even better? Good old house rivalry between the God-almighty Gryffindors and the nasty slimy Slytherins. The school was going mad due to the brotherly rivalry, but I didn’t care about Albus, no he wasn’t my problem... my problem was the annoyingly cocky captain and she was going down.
We were going to win today. We had to. I’d made the team practise hard over the year, 5am training sessions. Practise four times a week. I booked the pitch whenever I could. The complaints from the team were enough to rival Great Aunt Muriel’s how that bat was still alive is beyond me, Freddie says she’s like dementor but sucks the life out of young people and harnesses it for her own. Mum says she’s going to out live us all. I just think she’s living on borrowed time.
The game was in three hours, I was already up sitting at the Gryffindor table awaiting for my team's arrival. I wasn’t nervous, not at all and that definitely isn’t my leg shaking. I had complete faith in my team they are the best Gryffindor have ever seen. There was no doubt about it.
They had me James Sirius Potter as their beloved Captain and the house’s favourite chaser, Adam Wood and Jennifer Haddock as our other two chasers. Freddie Weasley and Michael Thomas as the beaters (the pair rivalled Fred and George so I’ve been told - and even from old footage it's been proven). Hugo Weasley as our keeper (Ron was so proud when I made that decision last year, the kid deserved it, he’d improved drastically over the summer) and last but not least little Lily Potter as our star seeker. We were a force to be reckoned with, but so were the Slytherin’s, even though I don't like to admit it.
Hugo was the first to descend down to dinner, he looked as green in the face as the Slytherins banner’s that hanged around the room. I smiled at him supportively. “How you doing?” I asked.
“I feel queasy,” he squeaked as he held his stomach tight.
“Eat something, it’s just the nerves. Come on Hugo you’ve been ace all year, you can’t let me down now... not when the cup is in our reach.”
“I’m just scared I’ll let you down.”
“You won’t. If the ball even ends up in your end it will be the fault of us, as long as you do your best I can’t ask for more. You’re one of the best keepers I’ve ever seen,” (minus Cora but he doesn't need to know that). “You’re better than your Dad you know by miles, Dad tells me.”
“Are they coming to see this game?”
“I believe so, as long as everything is ok and quiet at work.”
“Who’s your dad supporting?”
“He said he’s not picking teams, because that means choosing between sons, but me and Al both know he’s rooting for Gryffindor how could he not, it would be blasphemy if he didn’t. Betraying his own house, it’s almost unheard of,” I laughed. Hugo was scoffing on sausages, he seemed to have gotten over his minor stomach pains.
I sat there looking at the doors of the Great Hall, watching as the rest of the Hogwarts student body swarmed their way in. The Slytherin Team came in all together already all suited in their uniforms. They had smug smiles written across their faces as if they’d already won. The only person missing from their little club was the captain herself, maybe she was sick. One can only hope.
I looked over at Albus who seemed to be keeping it altogether like me. Which means on the inside he’s either about to throw up, or jumping off the ceiling in excitement. I can safely say I have a mixture between the two. I was nervous, hell why shouldn’t I be? It was the last match of the season everything depended on this. Rose said the world would still go on, but she can’t talk she’s biased, especially since she announced she was dating that slime ball Malfoy. Now that’s what betraying your own house is called, not to mention family. I looked over at the slime ball too, he was grinning from ear to ear, laughing at a joke Albus had just told. Their bromance made me feel sick.
The rest of my team decided it was finally time to show their faces. Freddie looked like he’d just woken up, there was a huge drool stain down his quidditch robe. He smiled lazily at me as he sat down and piled up his plate. Lily was bouncing up and down, her eyes darting from every inch of the room taking in her surroundings. She was taking this to the next level serious, because at the end of the day this game came down to two Potters, Al and Lily only one of them could catch the snitch and Lily wasn’t going to let it be Al, not again. Not after he caught it earlier this year, she never let me hear the end of it. They fell out big time after that, well when I say fell out Lily wouldn’t talk to him at all, saying he should have let her win. If it wasn’t for the fact she was a bloody good seeker I would have kicked her off the team for being such an annoying whiner.
Haddock looked like her completely mellowed self, I don’t know how she stays so relaxed, this was her last year. She told me she needed that cup, if there was any chance of her getting signed next year. She was a brilliant chaser and with all the talent scouts coming for today’s match I had no doubt she’d get signed. I was still shocked that I made Captain over her two years ago. I was Gryffindor’s youngest Captain, put in place in fourth year. We’ve won the Quidditch cup once before and we will win it once again. I’m making that promise to myself.
Wood and Thomas were laughing away I had no idea what they were laughing at but I’m glad they’re in a good mood. They have a better chance at playing at their bests.
Greengrass still hadn’t made an appearance. She was probably going to make a drastic one, she always does. She loves to show off and show how much better she is than everybody else. She’s been my number one competition since we started Hogwarts. I made the Gryffindor team in first year, she made the Slytherin team in first year. She became Captain in third year (I still don’t know how she did it) I became it in fourth year. Quidditch isn’t even the beginning we’ve always been arguing, fighting, duelling even our grades are one big competition. With me beating her by one mark in our Defence against the dark arts exam last year. She was fuming when she found out, the same way I was fuming when she bet in potions by two marks. Like I said we don’t get along.
I watched as the Slytherins made their way out of the Great Hall, still no captain. How did she even make Captain when she doesn’t even show up to support her team through bloody breakfast. Unbelievable, she’s probably in her dorm applying makeup making sure she looks perfect for the game to impress the spectators.
“Come on then team let’s go!” I shouted down the table they all nodded and we walked out of the hall, cheering followed us from the rest of the Gryffindor House - and the rest of the houses (minus Slytherin obviously). I felt like a God, like the whole world was resting upon my shoulders. It felt great, scary but great.
We walked down to the pitch, Freddie and Wood were singing “Weasley is our King!” the song originally created for Uncle Ron, I saw a blush on Hugo’s freckly cheeks, he and I both know depending on how he plays this game will depend on which song the crowd plays. I knew he was nervous but we all are. I finally spotted Greengrass, she was already on the pitch, doing laps on her broom. The bloody nerve the show off! I hope she falls off and injures herself, the stupid wench. We walked down to the pitch, we got there just as she landed. She looked over for a second, we looked at each other, emotionless. Before we both looked away and went to our own changing rooms.
I walked into the changing room the guys had already spread themselves amongst the benches. Freddie and Thomas had gotten their bats and were now mindlessly chasing each other around the changing room, trying to whack each other. I wasn’t in the mood for their shenanigans today. We needed to be serious. The team were awaiting their pre-match speech and I was going to give it to them.
“Ok team listen up!” Freddie and Thomas stopped and immediately sat down. Oh the wonderful voice of power. “Today is an important game. For years and years we have been at war with the Slytherins, we haven’t let them go easy before, so we’re sure as hell aren’t going to let them do it now. I want the best performance you’ve ever given out there, so what if this isn’t your last year? You impress the talent scouts now, they’ll keep their eye on you next year and the year after that. We need to win that cup today and keep it out of the slimy Slytherin’s hands. We’re going to win and we’re not going to take no for an answer! Who’s with me?”
The rest of the team cheered. We were in the mood to win, and that’s what we planned on doing…
I heard the first whistle signalling for us to do our introductory lap around the pitch. We were first, only alphabetically sadly, due to the fact the Slytherins and we were on exactly the same points entering this match. It really was the decision maker, anyone could win. The anyone being Gryffindor.
“AND NOW WELCOMING THE GRYFFINDOR’S QUIDDITCH TEAM!” Ashley McDonald shouted (and yes he is a boy) he’s from Hufflepuff and believe it or not his number one dream is to be a Quidditch announcer. Good luck to the bloke.
“WITH THEIR CAPTAIN JAMES POTTER AND HIS FELLOW CHASERS: THE BEAUTIFUL JENNIFER HADDOCK!” she unprofessionally stuck her middle finger up at him.
“LOVE YOU TOO BEAUTIFUL. AND NOT FORGETTING ADAM WOOD!” the crowd cheered, I guessed Wood’s Dad was here he never misses a game.
“FREDDIE WEASLEY AND MICHAEL THOMAS AS THEIR BASHFUL BEATERS!” again cheers “HUGO WEASLEY AS THE GRYFFINDOR’S KEEPER, AND NOT FORGETTING THE LOVELY LILLY POTTER AS THE STAR SEEKER!” I swear I saw Lily blush at that. We smiled and waved while we took our lap around the pitch. We hovered in the middle awaiting the Slytherin’s entrance.
“AND NOW WELCOMING THE SLYTHERINS!” there was hisses and cheers mixed within the crowd, glad to know the Ravenclaws and Hufflepuff’s had our backs. “WITH THEIR FIESTY KEEPER AND CAPTAIN CORA GREENGRASS, HOPING TO WIN HER THIRD QUIDDITCH CUP!” yeah well I’m hoping to win my second, when was that announced ay?
“WITH HER BEATERS RYAN FLINT AND SKYLAR ZABINI” there was cheer then only from their fan club, they weren’t that good looking “THE CHASERS: CLAIRE SANDERS, ADAM HORNBRIDGE AND SCORPIUS MALFOY” again they were met from not needed cheers.
“AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE REASON THIS GAME HAS THE POTTER FAMILY ON EDGE. ALBUS POTTER AS SLYTHERINS SEEKER! ONLY ONE POTTER CAN CATCH THE SNITCH BUT WHICH ONE WILL IT BE?” I could see Al cringing at the use of his first name. I laughed to myself.
The Slytherins joined us hovering. Cora and Me were directly facing each other. Waiting for Madam Hooch to give us the go ahead.
“CAPTAINS SHAKE HANDS!”
I begrudgingly shook her hand. “Good luck Potter,” she said I couldn’t tell whether she was being sarcastic she had her serious quidditch face on. Yes I’ve noticed her Quidditch face how I could not; I have to see it whenever I shoot.
“You too,” I said although I didn’t mean it.
“I WANT A NICE AND CLEAN GAME, DO YOU HEAR ME?”
We nodded. She blew her whistle signalling for all to get in to position, I stayed put as Malfoy replaced Greengrass, she took hers by the hoops. Hooch blew the whistle a second time, signalling the beginning of game and the release of the balls.
The game had started.
“AND THEY’RE OFF! POTTER GETS THE FIRST HAND ON THE BALL, BUT WAIT NO MALFOY SNATCHES IT BACK OFF HIM. WE’RE IN FOR A GAME HERE PEOPLE!” that git, I swore under my breath and tried to catch back up with him.
“MALFOY IS ON HIS WAY TO THE GOAL POSTS, HE SHOOTS, NO WAIT HE PASSES TO SANDERS WHO SCORES. SANDERS MAKES THE FIRST GOAL OF MATCH. IT’S 10-0 TO THE SLYTHERINS!” fuck. I watched the goal before my eyes, Malfoy made it look like he was shooting right hoop, so Hugo marked it, the last minute pass made it impossible for him to save. The jammy git. Greengrass had her tactics worked out, I’ll give her that.
“HUGO PASSES THE BALL TO HADDOCK AND THEY’RE BACK OFF. HADDOCK PASSES THE BALL TO POTTER WHO HEADS STRAIGHT TOWARDS TO THE GOAL, HE’S ABOUT TO SHOOT. DAVIE HITS A BLUDGER STRAIGHT AT HIM KNOCKING THE BALL OUT OF HIS HANDS AND STRAIGHT INTO THE HANDS OF HORNBRIDGE!” shit that hurt. I shook it off nothing was broken at least I hoped not.
“Where were you?" I shouted to Freddie who was now batting the bludger at Hornbridge but was diverted by Zabini.
“WOOD TAKES CONTROL OF THE QUAFFLE, HE PASSES IT TO HADDOCK, WHO PASSES IT BACK. WOOD SHOOTS! GREENGRASS BATS IT AWAY BY THE TIPS OF HER FINGERS. I BET THAT HURT. POTTER CATCHES THE FALLEN PASS AND SHOOTS AGAIN. HE SCORES!! IT’S 10-10 GRYFFINDOR HAVE MADE THEIR FIRST GOAL!” I smirked at Cora who set her jaw determinedly at me. She meant war and we were going to bring it.
“GREENGRASS PASSES IT TO, MALFOY, WHO NARROWLY AVOIDS A BLUDGER, THEY’RE WILD TODAY. HE PASSES IT TO SANDERS, WHO PASSES IT BACK. MALFOYS KICKS THE BALL IN TO THE MIDDLE HOOP! I REPEAT HE KICKED THE BALL INTO THE MIDDLE HOOP. THAT’S GOING TO HURT IN THE MORNING!”
“Stop showing off Scorpius!” Cora warned.
“LOOKS LIKE MALFOY IS IN TROUBLE WITH THE CAPTAIN. BUT ITS 20-10 AND SLYTHERIN ARE IN THE LEAD!”
The game carried on for what felt like hours, the score was 160-90 Slytherin were winning. We were getting tired we all were but there was still no signs on the snitch.
“GREENGRASS SAVES ANOTHER GOAL. THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE TODAY!” yeah she is don’t remind me, she’s even harder to score past than I remember. I’d scored six times, each she only missed by a mm.
“WHAT’S THIS THE SNITCH HAS BEEN SPOTTED. BOTH POTTERS ARE HEAD TO HEAD. THEY’RE DIVING, GOING AT GODLY SPEEDS, THIS IS DANGEROUS BUT NONE OF THEM ARE PULLING UP. BOTH DETERMINED TO GET THE SNITCH. LILY PULLS UP AS HER BROOM BECOMES UNCONTROBABLE- ALBUS CARRIES ON. HE MAKES A ROUGH LANDING ON TO THE PITCH AS HE EVACUATES HIS BROOM STICK. THE BROOMSTICK HAS SMASHED. HE JUMPED OFF SECONDS BEFORE THE IMPACT, IS HE OK?” all eyes were on Al, I flew straight to him, the idiot would never give in his dives would be the death of him. I watched as he miraculously stood up, looking uninjured from such a dangerous fall. He held his hand out, flexing the golden snitch.
“HE’S CAUGHT IT! I REPEAT ALBUS POTTER HAS CAUGHT THE SNITCH. THE SLYTHERINS HAVE WON! 310-90! GREENGRASS HAS SECURED HER THIRD QUIDDITCH CUP!”
And that was when my whole world crashed and burned. We had lost. Gryffindor had lost the world cup, to the Slytherins. I, James Sirius Potter had lost to Cora Greengrass once again. The Slytherins were cheering hugging their captain, I couldn’t hear anything, I’d drowned out everyone and everything: We’d actually lost. We walked back to the changing rooms, depressed, our spirits broken.

That was the memory that has been haunting me throughout the summer holidays. I vowed never again will I lose to Cora Greengrass. Dad said this year is going to be special like no other, it’s my last year and quidditch is all that is on my mind. School starts tomorrow, and I promise this year we’re going to win it.
