Chapter 20 : Books

Background: Font color:
"Shoot." She had gotten used to talking out loud: it made it feel less lonely in the common room.
She put down the mug and reached out for her wand, and realised it wasn’t there, it was in Draco’s room. She sighed and got up to get her wand.
She walked into Draco’s room and looked around but couldn’t see it anywhere. She checked in his drawers, inside his wardrobe and in the bed. She looked down and saw the end of her wand so she bent down to pick it up, when she noticed a book. She picked up her wand and the book, but it wasn’t the book, it was the photo album she had given him for Christmas.
You didn’t take it with you? Wh-why? Why not? I thought you would have taken it with you. She picked it up, and sat on his bed, she opened the first page, there was a note,
Hermione, I hope one day you will find this when I'm gone, and find out how much you meant to me, -D
Hermione breathed in and turned the page, she saw what was there previously, but then as she turned the pages, she saw pictures of her and Draco together; pictures she didn’t know had been taken. One of her and Draco at the ball before that awful night and, right at the back, tucked in with the letter he had written in third year, was a picture of her, the morning after they had first spent the night together. Underneath the picture was a word, one word she had only heard from a man who had undying love, a word that meant too much if used in the correct way, and from the person that mattered the most.
It was written in Draco’s handwriting. Always. It echoed in her mind and she soon drifted off to sleep, one hand on her necklace, one on the album.
Soon enough, he got to the common room, and looked nervously at the old Headmaster before entering the common room,
"Hermione?" Blaise looked around; he saw both Draco's and Hermione’s doors were closed. He wondered which she was in.
Blaise looked at Draco’s door and decided to go to his room first. He climbed up the stairs and gently pushed open the door, he peered in and saw Hermione asleep on Draco’s bed.
He sighed, and walked up to the bed, he gently shook Hermione awake, and Hermione turned and opened her eyes to face Blaise.
"Zabini? What…how did you get in?" She sat up on her elbows, pushing her hair out of her tear stained face.
"The…the password, you told me the password a few weeks back."
"Oh, right," Hermione got up, "so"
"Oh right, yeah, we were wondering if you would like to come to Hogesmeade with us?"
"Err…no, not really. I need to go over some charms again, I couldn’t quite get the knack of them last time."
"Hermione that’s bullshit."
Hermione was shocked at his bluntness. "No, no it isn’t."
"Hermione, you are coming with us, like it or not." He raised an eyebrow.
"Fine, but not for long." She got up. "One second, let me freshen up."
"I’ll be waiting."
Blaise headed to the common room, and Hermione walked into the bathroom. Five minutes later, she re-appeared looking better than she had done, but she still looked very ill.
"C’mon Granger, off we go." He walked behind her, and started to push her forward, leading her out the room, Hermione not arguing.
They met Harry, Ron, Ginny, Luna and Neville out by the main doors,
"Hermione! How are you feeling today?" Harry asked, walking forward to embrace his friend in a hug.
"I'm okay. Just a bit tired, that’s all." She smiled weakly.
"Are you sure?" Ginny asked.
"Shall we go then guys?" Neville asked?
Nods of agreement were shared and they started to walk.
"Err, Harry, are we still going to go the bakery for out lunch, as its, you know?" Ginny asked Harry, this catching Hermione’s ear.
"I don’t know, do you really think we should be going? I suppose it would be okay if Luna and Neville went, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for them to go."
<i>What are they talking about? As it’s what? Oh, yes, its Valentine’s Day isn’t it?
"Guys, you go to the bakery, its fine, I’ll walk around with Ron and Blaise if that’s alright with them?" The boys nodded in agreement.
"No, Hermione! I shouldn’t have said anything!" Ginny mentally kicked herself.
"Ginervra Molly Weasley, you go on this double date, or I will hex you into oblivion!" Hermione smiled, properly for the first time in a month, and Ginny knew it.
"Thank you Hermione!" she hugged her friend as they arrived on the outskirts of Hogesmeade.
"It’s not like you haven’t been there for me, hell, you even asked McGonagall to stay in my common room. It’s the least I could do." She shooed the two couples away and turned to Ron and Blaise.
"Ron, where’s Lavender?" Hermione furrowed her eyebrows.
"Erm we broke up, I called it off." Ron shuffled nervously.
"I just didn’t feel that way anymore." He mumbled.
"Well, as long as you’re happy Ron." She hugged him, "right, butterbeers?"
The three walked into The Three Broomsticks, took their places and received their butterbeers that they had ordered when they had gone in.
"So, Blaise, is there anyone that you would have wanted to spend this day with?" Hermione asked, not wanting to bring up a certain someone.
"Err, yes, but there is no way its ever going to happen, she’s taken" Blaise looked down, trying to avoid Ron’s watchful eye.
"Whos the girl?" Hermione asked.
"No one you would know, she doesn’t go here." Blaise said quickly.
"Ahh, that’s a shame!"
"How are you Hermione? How’s…everything?" Ron asked, taking another sip of his butterbeer.
"I'm…fine actually, well, not fine, but I'm coping. I'm getting use to the fact he’s not there anymore, but I’ll be fine in the end." She smiled.
"Sure? Hermione, when was the last time you ate?" Ron furrowed his eyebrows, Blaise turned to look at her.
"I’m not sure. I can’t remember the last time I ate. I’ve just been revising a lot I suppose." She shrugged, not wanting to admit she had been so busy wallowing in self-pity, that she didn’t have time to eat.
"That’s it, you’re going to eat, were leaving now." Blaise got up, pulling Hermione with him, Ron following, not liking the thought of Blaise holding Hermione’s hand.
Hermione pulled away her hand and followed after the two boys, when she noticed a new book shop had arrived. "Oh, guys I'm going to be five minutes in here, I’ll meet you outside the bakery." She smiled, and quickly rushed into the bookstore.
The bookstore was filled with books that ranged from hundreds of years old to brand new. The inside was a warming colour, with comfy sofas to curl up and read on. Little enchanted fires had been enchanted on the tables by the sofas, to keep the customer warm, and they wouldn’t get out of control.
Rows and rows of books filled the tiny shop. Hermione wondered if they had the element book she had been looking for. She kept looking until she had found three different books. She settled down into one of the sofas and began reading, forgetting about Blaise and Ron. It was another thirty minutes before they popped into her mind.
Blaise and Ron! Oh crap, I didnt meet them! Surely they will understand!
She got up, paid for her books and walked out of the shops, immediately missing the smell of the bookstore, it had always been a favourite of hers.
She carried on walking, her head down not wanting to be noticed by anyone, when she walked into someone hard, dropping her books.
"Oh, I'm…I'm sorry! I should have looked where I was going!" Hermione bent down to pick up her books, not wanting to show the stranger how embarrassed she was. She felt the stranger bend down and saw them pick up two of the books, while she got the other one. She stood back up, and looked at the stranger, when she dropped the books once more, this time in shock. The stranger was Draco.
Hermione took a step back, he bent down and picked the books up again, Hermione not saying a word. She looked at him, he had scratches down his cheek, a scar on one of his eyebrows and his face was slightly sunken.
"Hermione I-" Draco handed her back her books, but Hermione interrupted him,
"I thought you might want this back," she put her hands to the back of her neck, and unclasped her necklace, she put it in her hands, ready to give it back to him, "here you go." She prayed her voice wouldn’t break.
"Keep it Hermione." He closed her open hand, "Hermione, I'm so so-"
Once again, Hermione cut him off. "It’s fine. It’s always been fine, I understand. There’s no need to apologise." This time, it broke.
She looked up at him, avoiding his eyes and turned and walked away, taking deep breaths as she went.
After about five steps, she remembered the album in her bag. She stopped and reached in her extendable bag and pulled it out. She could feel the tears stinging her eyes, she turned and walked back.
"I thought you might want this too..." she placed it in his hands, a tear escaped and she quickly wiped it away, hoping he didn’t notice, but was sure he did. With that, she turned and walked in the direction of the bakery, trying to hold back the sobs that had built up in her throat.
I don’t know what I'm even doing in Hogesmeade, why am I in Hogesmeade? Maybe to see Hermione again? That’s it, but I doubt I’ll run into her, I wish I would though. It’s been just over a month, if I see her, she might see me, and I can’t do that to her.
His thoughts were stopped when someone much smaller than him walked into him, dropping her books.,
"I'm…I'm sorry, I should have looked where I was going."
He bent down to pick them up, when he saw the bushy-haired person who had bent down to pick them up. He quickly grabbed two of the books, and stood back up.
Please don’t look up Hermione, please don’t
She looked up, Draco mentally smacked himself. He had a million thoughts running through his head,
"Hermione I-" but he was cut short by Hermione,
"I want to give this back."
What’s she doing? She’s not giving back the necklace is she?
"Here you go."
She unclasped it, and was ready to give it to him.
I want you to keep it, don’t give it back. "Keep it Hermione." He touched her hand, feeling a million electric shocks go through him, and shut her hand around the necklace, "Hermione, I'm so so-" but yet again, he was cut short by her.
"It’s fine. It's always been fine, I understand. There’s no need to apologise."
Its not fine Hermione, it’s never been. Yes, you understand, but I wish there was nothing to understand. Oh how I wish I could take you in my arms and call you mine again, especially on this day, of all the days.
He looked back down at her and she looked up. He knew she was trying not to meet his eyes, and before he knew it, she had turned to walk away.
Draco stood there, as he watched Hermione walk away, then she stopped, pulled something out of her bag, turned back again and began walking towards him, hope built up in Draco.
"I thought you might want this." She placed the album book he had left back in Hogwarts, into his hands, he looked at Hermione, and saw a tear roll down her cheek, and he felt his heart break. He looked down at the book in his hands, then back up, to see she was walking away.
Draco closed his eyes, and made his way back up to McGonagall to tell her the news, clinging onto the book, as it was the last thing Hermione had touched.
"Hermione? Hermione what’s wrong?" Ron said, as Hermione arrived at the bakery. She looked down and the tears escaped her eyes.
"I" she took a deep breath, "I saw Draco, I saw him, he’s here." She sat down in the booth, Ron and Blaise looked at each other. Ron took hold of Hermione’s arm, and Blaise’s shoulder, and apparated them to the closest they could get to Hogwarts
