The train stopped abruptly, and without a sound from the brakes, with only a ‘ding’ of the train’s bell alerting the students of their arrival. The transporting of students from the train, to Hogwarts itself, had been a recurring tradition of the past several centuries. The returning students, years 2-7, would ride in special flying carriages straight to the castle, to prepare for the feast. The first years, however, were separated from everyone else and journeyed in rowboats to the castle.
“Alrigh’ firs’ follow me now.” Came a loud, kindly voice out of the crowd. Albus, immediately recognizing the voice of Hagrid, a family friend, and the father of his best friend Thor, and ran over to him.
“Ah! There you go Albus. Just follow Thor now, down to the boats you go.”Albus looked over to his right, and spotted Thor walking down a path leading to a large lake.
A minute later, when Albus caught up with Thor next to a large crowd of rowboats, bobbing up and down with the waves, he heard Hagrid call, "You lot be in the firs' boat with me." Albus looked at Thor, and then they both scrambled for the front seat. As everyone else arrived a minute later, Albus sat panting, in the back of the boat.
The boy that was with them on the train, known to Albus as 'Blondie', climbed into their boat. "All aboard?" Asked Hagrid. " Right then, next stop Hogwarts."
Once the boats set out, the boy looked up at Thor, and Albus, and asked weather they knew an Albus Potter. “That’s me.” Replied Albus, which got a look of surprise from the boy, who then looked up and grabbed something from his pocket. “Some strange bloke asked me to give you this. But it won’t open until next week, I tried, and it said it would unlock a week after the Welcoming Feast.” He handed Albus a envelope. “My name is Scorpious by the way, Scorpious Malfoy.” Scorpious then went back to staring into the dark water.
Contemplating the strange delivery, Albus didn’t realize that they had arrived at Hogwarts until a loud gasp went up from the crowd of first years. “It’s beautiful!” Murmured Albus to himself as he gazed wonderingly at the castle. Beautiful it was, with large towers crafted out of white marble, it was the definition of a castle.
“Welcome new students!” Came a high pitched voice from Albus’s right. Albus glanced over, and noticed a short wizard, standing near a door that sprouted from the castle wall. “ Welcome to Hogwarts! I am Headmaster Flitwick. In just a few moments, you will fully join the Hogwarts family, as you will be sorted into your house. Your house will be like your family, and the other houses will be your neighbors. Please follow me into the Great Hall, so we can begin the ceremonies. When I call your name, you will walk forward, and don the sorting hat.”
A puzzled murmuring went up throughout the crowd of first years. Nobody had ever heard of a sorting hat. How exactly were they supposed to fight it?
Headmaster Flitwick returned, and beckoned for the first years to follow him into the Great Hall. As the first years turned through two gigantic double doors, they received a welcoming cheer from the returning students, who wished to begin their feast.
“Quiet down, quiet down.” Headmaster Flitwick exclaimed. “ We are here to sort new students, into their new homes. As you all know, I will call off the names of the new students, and they will walk forward and place the hat on their head. It will then decide where the student belongs. Shall we begin?”
A large cheer rose from the students, and the Headmaster stepped forward and called “ Alston, Ernie” A boy shuffled out of the crowd of first years, and nervously approached the sorting hat. All of the first years, were also nervous, knowing that they could be next. Ernie placed the hat on his head, and immediately it shouted, making the first years jump back in surprise, “Ravenclaw!”
The first years grew less nervous as the process repeated over and over again. It wasn’t that bad after all. All you did, was approach the hat, and then when you put it on, wait a second and then sprint to a table assigned to you. In fact the remaining first years, and remaining students were bored, and beginning to doze off. Albus was just getting into a daydream, where he was attacked by a mad screaming hat, when he heard the Headmaster yell, ‘Potter, Albus”. Albus moved slowly up towards the hat, and placed it on his head. All at once he was enveloped in a quick rush of his memories. The hat then declared loudly, “Gryffindor!”. Albus shouted in delight, and then hurried over to join his brother James at the Gryffindor table. All in all, it was a dream come true.
