Rachelle and I are in the Gryffindor common room, attending the usual party that takes place after a victory. She initiated our snogging session on the couch in front of the fireplace, but I wasn’t complaining. Well, until Albus interrupted us.
“James!” he hisses loudly.
I try to ignore him, but the kid is too bloody impatient for his own good, “James Sirius Potter!” he hisses even louder, “If you don’t stop kissing your girlfriend, I’ll tell her about last Christmas,” he threatens.
That was enough to make me stop. I pull away from her and glare at my little brother, “What are you even doing here? Who let you in?” I ask him.
He ignores me, looking pointedly at Rachelle. She blushes and gets off the couch, “I’m going to try one of those pastries you brought from your uncle’s shop,” she mutters, about to leave.
“You don’t want to try those,” I warn her.
She rolls her eyes at me, “Stop being such a stiff, James.”
I stare at her in shock. I have never been called stiff before, maybe I won’t say anything about Uncle George’s joke products, “Never mind,” I wave her off and she leaves in search of that pastry.
“She’s delightfully judgmental,” Albus says as he falls down into her vacant spot.
He looks better. Lily is with Dad until he deems her well enough to come back to Hogwarts. Something really put her into a shock, but she won’t tell anyone. We’re hoping that our dad will find out and let us know, but that’s a shot in the dark. My dad is known for being secretive, “It’s an adorable quirk she possesses,” I respond, “What are you doing here?”
“I’ve come to tell you the news. Rose is dating Daniel Thomas,” he tells me, waiting in anticipation for my reaction.
I shrug, “Okay.”
Albus’ frown deepens, “Is that all?”
“Is what all?” I ask him.
He rolls his eyes, “You’re not even going to burn the school down in search of the bloke?”
“I thought you said not to do that anymore?” I question him, eyebrows rising.
He shrugs, “This time is different.”
“It just is.”
“Well that clarifies everything, thanks Albus. Let me grab that pitchfork that I keep stashed in my closet, and we’ll go rampaging after the kid,” I glare at him.
His eyes brighten, “Seriously?”
“No, Mum took my pitchfork away years ago, Albus.”
“You’ve got to have a torch somewhere, right?”
I ignore this question, “Why in the name of all that is holy, do you want me to attack this bloke that Rosie’s dating?”
“Because she shouldn’t be dating him,” he simply states.
“Al, I’ve met Daniel. He’s actually quite the gentleman.”
“How would you know that?”
“Mum sent me to those etiquette classes after I turned Great-Aunt Petunia’s nose into a snout.”
“Come on, James,” he pleads with me, “Why don’t you want to chase Daniel off?”
I counter, “Why do you want me to?”
Albus huffs and gets up from the couch, “Forget it. This was a waste of time.”
I grab his arm, “Albus Severus Potter, you tell me what’s going on now, or else I will personally see to it that Dad figures out exactly who it was that burned a hole in his favorite robes.”
Albus’ eyes widen in shock, “You wouldn’t dare.”
I shrug, “Try me.”
He sighs and sits down again, “There’s something you need to know.”
Fifteen minutes later
“Scorpius, you bloody git. Get your arse back here!” I scream after the boy.
I throw a curse at his back, but it misses and hits a large vase, sending it crashing to the floor. He turns the nearest corner, and I follow him meeting Charlotte and the Galatians. Scorpius hides behind Leo and I narrow my eyes on him, “You imbecile!”
I hear Leo whisper something to Ellie, but I ignore it. Scorpius is going to pay.
“Perhaps you’re being rather rash,” he squeaks, crouching lower behind Leo.
I growl, “Leo, if you know what’s good for you, you’ll move away from the blonde twerp.”
Leo doesn’t hesitate to move and Scorpius whimpers after him. Ellie, however, steps in front of him, blocking him, once again. She folds her arms across her chest, “Potter, what do you think you’re doing?”
I roll my eyes, “Target practice.”
“Don’t pull that dung, here. What is the cause of this chaos?”
I ignore her question, “Galatian, if you don’t move, I’ll make you move.”
Her scowl deepens, but she doesn’t move. Charlotte and Leo look on the scene in complete terror as I lift my wand, “I’m not kidding. Move or be moved.”
She lifts her own wand, “Not without a proper explanation.”
I cringe at how fit she looks standing up against me and defending the git, “This is between him and me. Just. . .trust me on this, okay Galatian?” I plead with her.
Her eyes widen, but she doesn’t back down, “This is irrational, Potter. Just tell me why you feel the need to blast him to the other side of the castle.”
I close my eyes and sigh. She rejects everything I do, doesn’t she? I hear Malfoy’s terrified voice speak from behind her, “Er, if you don’t mind, could you please tell me why I’m being attacked?” he asks me.
I open my eyes and glare at him while Leo shakes himself out of his trance and joins his sister, “James. . .I’m sorry, but Ellie’s right. You’re being irrational,” he says, holding his own wand up.
We stare at each other, “James!” a voice comes up from behind me and a body tackles me to the ground.
I groan as Albus pulls my wand from my hand, “Woah, let’s just calm down, eh James?”
“Allie-bear?” a terrified Scorpius runs and hugs Albus, “I thought I was a goner for sure.”
“We all thought that,” Leo grumbles, putting his wand away again.
I rub my head from the impact, “Er, Al, you said-”
“I know what I said, James,” Albus dismisses me and tries to push Scorpius off of himself to no avail.
Ellie walks over and holds her hand out for me. I grasp it and she helps me off the ground, “What’s going on?” she asks me, dusting off my robes.
“Oi! You two stay there, we’re going to go, er, do something. . .else,” Scorpius says, grabbing Leo and pulling him away.
Albus rolls his eyes, “Smooth, Scorp,” he calls after him and turns to Charlotte, “you better come with us.”
Ellie and I stare after them as they leave us. What the hell is going on?
Ellie turns on me and frowns, “You still have to explain why you were about to blow Scorpius apart.”
I shake myself out of the daze and frown, “Albus said that Scorpius and Daniel are betting on who can snog Rosie the most. The bloody git ran away as soon as I saw him.”
“What? Why would Albus say something like-” she cuts herself off, her eyes widening in comprehension.
“Galatian...what did you come up with just now?” I ask her.
She just shakes her head, “The secret mission,” she whispers.
She looks up at me, “Scorpius figured something out last week and now he’s trying to make my life a living hell,” she moans and crumbles to the ground.
I shift my feet awkwardly before crouching down next to her, “Am I allowed to know what he figured out?”
She laughs an empty laugh, “You’re the last person that should know.”
I sigh. I’m really finished with her cryptic messages. I slump against the wall and stare at the ceiling to pass the time. I wonder what Rachelle’s doing? I bet she’s puking all over the common room right now.
“James?” I look over and see Ellie staring at me.
She blushes and looks down. Man, she’s so beautiful, “May I ask you something?”
“Maybe,” I sigh.
She smiles, “Well, I’ve kind of noticed that you. . .don’t smile anymore. Why is that?”
I scratch my forehead, “Yeah. . .I won’t answer that question.”
She looks up in surprise, “What?”
I shrug, “It’s not like you’ve been so keen on clearing up my own confusion, why should I go out of my way to help enlighten you?”
Her eyes widen and she runs a hand through her hair before sighing, “What do you want to know?”
“Really? Just like that? You must really be curious about my face,” I tease her.
“So what if I am?” she responds.
My mouth falls open in shock. Is Elizabeth Galatian really flirting with me? No. . .I must be dreaming. I reach over and pinch her. She screams, “Ow!” and slaps my hand away, “What was that for?!”
“I guess I’m not dreaming,” I murmur to myself.
She laughs, “James, you’re supposed to pinch yourself.”
I beam, “You called me James!”
She smiles at me, looking me straight in the eyes. I shift around, a little unnerved by the staring, “Er, so I was wondering what you meant when you said that Scorpius figured something out. It kind of sounded serious,” I blush and scratch the back of my neck.
“Anything but that,” she pleads with me.
How could I deny that face? God I’m a mess around this girl, “Oh yeah, okay sure. Er, why is it that you’re never in the hospital wing when I go to visit you?”
She pouts and folds her arms across her chest, “What?” I ask her.
“You ask really. . .problematic questions, James,” she sighs.
I stare into her eyes, trying to figure her out. I’ve never realized just how. . .secretive Ellie really is, “Fine,” I fall to the ground.
“What are you doing?” she asks warily.
I roll over to her, “I’m obviously dying, Ellie,” I pout at her.
“Oh, sorry. I thought you were just being a spaz, but I guess I was wrong,” she teases, poking my stomach.
Oh man, I’m so ticklish there. I try to keep myself from laughing, but a small chuckle escapes. Her eyes widen and her face breaks out into a huge smile. Oh no. . .that look is entirely alarming, “Ellie. . .” I warn, but she ignores me and attacks.
I’m a genius. I’m the epitome of brilliance! Man, I should look into a profession as a matchmaker or something. Really, I bet the two kids are snogging right now. Ellie owes me big time.
Leo breaks his arm out of my grasp and rubs the tender spots where my fingers left marks, “Er, Scorp, what the hell is going on?”
Albus and Charlotte are walking just behind us, “My brilliant plan, that’s what’s going on,” I reply, smiling at him.
“Care to explain more about this brilliant plan?” Charlotte asks when we reach an empty classroom a good distance between us and the lovely couple.
I drop into an empty desk and put my feet up, “I can’t say anything.”
“But Albus obviously knew what was going on,” Leo huffs, sitting down next to me. He doesn’t like being in the dark about things.
Albus frowns and sits down in the desk in front of ours and turns to face us, “Well, Allie-bear already knew,” I explain.
Charlotte stays standing just beyond the threshold of the classroom, “The professor doesn’t live in here!” I call to her, “I know, it’s confusing, but they sleep in their own dormitories.”
She shakes out of her daze and walks over to our group, sitting next to Albus, “I know,” she curtly replies.
“Well I didn’t know until last year when Leo crushed my dreams,” I huff, still upset about that.
Charlotte cringes at my words and nods. I turn to Leo, who’s red in the face, “Anyways, so yeah, I’m not allowed to tell anybody, but Allie-bear already knew,” I say, returning to the original topic.
He doesn’t respond, but, instead, stares at the ground.
I pout and turn to Albus, “Are you mute?” I ask him.
“I didn’t know I had the option of ignoring the rubbish that spews from your mouth,” Albus responds, chuckling lightly to himself.
I throw my hands up in defeat, “I’m not going to sit around and take insults. I’m a genius!”
He shakes his head at me, “You came up with one good plan, that doesn’t deem you a genius. In fact, I’m pretty sure that you’re insane. Actually, I’m a hundred percent certain that you’re insane.”
I gape at him and turn to Leo, “Did you hear what he,” I point at Albus, “said to me?!”
Leo looks up, his eyes glazed over, “What? Oh yeah, Albus be nice to Scorpius,” he waves us off.
It’s Albus’ turn to look confused, “What’s wrong with you, Galatian?”
Albus frowns and looks between Charlotte and Leo, his eyebrow raising. I catch his eye and raise my own eyebrow, nonverbally asking him what he figured out. He points between the two and makes kissy faces. I cough to cover up my laugh and grunt my understanding, “Well...there’s some hefty tension in this room, isn’t there?” I announce, wiggling my eyebrows at Leo.
His eyes widen in panic and he jumps up from his chair, “I’m not entirely sure what you mean, Malfoy.”
Charlotte looks up at his sudden movement, “Where are you going?” she asks him.
Leo looks over at her, “I’m not going anywhere.”
“You got out of your chair.”
He points at me, “Scorpius' stupidity is rubbing off on me.”
I protest, but the two ignore me, “Too late for that,” Charlotte jabs.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he crosses his arms across his chest.
Charlotte rolls her eyes, “The meaning is obvious, Leo.”
Albus watches the fight, a smile creeping onto his somber face. He’s a strange one. Leo runs a hand over his face and grunts, “It’s not that obvious, Hastings.” I cringe at the surname.
She stands up and crosses her arms across her chest, “What, do I need to get you a dictionary?!”
Leo blinks in surprise at this statement and I hold back a laugh. That’s Leo’s favorite insult, “Er, dictionaries can’t decipher indirect insults,” he stutters out.
“See? You understood the meaning.”
“Of course I understood it, I just wanted you to say the insult to me, directly.”
“You’re so,” she waves her hands in front of her, “frustrating.”
“And you’re so,” he mimics her hand gesture, but he frowns, unable to think of anything.
Charlotte narrows her eyes at him, “I’m so what?” her voice is threatening.
He sighs and collapses in his chair, “Cute.”
Charlotte’s mouth falls open, “What?” she croaks in surprise.
“Cute,” Leo repeats, looking her in the eyes, “You’re adorable.”
James clutches his stomach in a snorting fit as he pushes me off of him, “Ellie,” he gasps between chuckles. I didn’t know he was so ticklish. It’s adorable.
I stare at him. He’s laughing. He’s really laughing. It seems like forever since I’ve last seen his eyes twinkle like that. I watch his shaking figure a few moments before scooting closer to him, grabbing his face in between my hands, and pressing my lips against his.
He stiffens in shock before smiling against my lips, causing a wave of shivers to run down my spine, and moving his own lips against mine. I allow my hands to run through his soft hair and his hands cradle my face, deepening the kiss.
I pull away after a few moments gasping for air. James stares at me, face flushed and smiling. The twinkles in his eyes are dancing in the brown depths, “Ellie...”
His voice pulls me back to reality and I quickly move away from him. I kissed James. Oh no. . .oh no no no no...I kissed James. What is wrong with me?! I bite my lip to keep from crying and he sits up, staring at me in confusion. Of course he’d be confused. I basically attacked him! I’m a monster.
“Woah, are you okay?” he whispers, moving to me and wiping a treacherous tear off my cheek.
I need to get out of here. I scramble off the floor, stumbling a little as the blood rushes to my legs. James watches me warily as I clear my throat, “Have a lovely evening, Potter.”
The last of his smile falls and he nods his head at me, “Same to you, Galatian.”
I walk away, tears falling down my cheeks.
