Merlin, please tell me this is a cruel joke. A cruel, evil, terrible little joke that was being played on me.
I doubled checked the lock on the bathroom door. It was still locked. Granted, a simple spell could open the door if anyone wanted in desperately.
I went back over to the sink. This couldn’t be happening to me. I tapped the muggle pregnancy test against the sink, as if to change it from positive from negative. It didn’t. I threw the test across the room.
“God damn it.” I cried out, sinking against the wall.
Why me? I wasn’t a bad person. I made one mistake. One little drunken mistake and it ends up screwing up my life. I wasn’t a perfect child but I wasn’t terrible. I didn’t deserve this.
“Alexia? Are you in there?”
Oh God no. Of all the people to knock on the door, it was Rose. Granted, I am locked in the dorm bathroom she uses. And that she’s one of my best friends. But, I can’t let her see the muggle test. Rose isn’t dumb, she would figure it out. That I slept with her cousin. The Weasley family was very…very protective of their relatives. I wasn’t ready to die yet.
“Nope.” I said
I jumped up and crossed the bathroom to grab the pregnancy test.
“Alexia, you can’t keep me out.” Rose said.
I only had a few seconds. I shoved the test in my back pocket and quickly put my school robe on to cover it. I wiped any tears away. I could try to fool Rose. Maybe just this once, it’ll work.
“Alexia sweetie, what’s wrong?” Rose asked when she got in the bathroom.
Damn Rose and her brilliantness. Granted my eyes were bloodshot but still. This isn’t fair.
“What’s wrong?” Nothing is wrong Rose. Why would you think something was wrong?”
I was a shit liar when it came to Rose. I just couldn’t lie to her for some reason.
“Really?” She asked, looking around the bathroom. “Ah hah! Would this have something to do with your state of panic?”
She held up the box that had once held the muggle pregnancy test. You got to be kidding me. How could I forget to hide the box? Merlin, could I get any more stupid?
“You’re pregnant, aren’t you?”
I looked down at the floor. How long would it take for her to figure out who the father is? Or should I just tell her and suffer the punishment?
“I’m so sorry Rose.” I cried, sinking back against the wall.
I pulled the test out of my back pocket and handed it to her.
“Who?” She asked.
“It was an accident Rose.” I cried. “You know I can’t stand him. We were drunk. I didn’t mean to.”
“Holy fucking Merlin. You’re carrying James’s baby.”
All Hell is going to break lose.
Rose didn’t have time to kill me. If she did, she would’ve been late to class. Instead, she demanded I go down to the hospital wing to make sure I was pregnant and it wasn’t some mess up in the muggle test. The last thing I wanted to was go to the hospital wing. Pomfrey would tell McGonagall and she would tell my parents. I wasn’t going down to the hospital wing. I stayed up in my bed all day, only venturing out for lunch.
“Did you go to Pomfrey?” Rose asked during lunch.
I shook my head no.
“Why not?” She demanded.
“I can’t.” I said. “She would tell McGonagall and McGonagall would tell my parents.”
“Alexia, you’re going to blow up like a balloon. Everyone is going to find out eventually.” Rose tossed back.
She was right. I was going to turn into a balloon. If I'm doing my math right, I’m probably around three months. Potter and I got…together around June. So either three or four months. Yeah, I was too stubborn to take a test earlier. I just wanted to think that my period got jacked with stress or something.
“Come on.” Rose said. “We’re going to the Hospital Wing. Right now.”
What? No way. This isn’t fair.
Rose grabbed my hand and led me out of the Great Hall. I did not want to do this. I hate Rose for making me face the truth. She led me into the Hospital wing and gently pushed me onto a bed. Then she went in search for Madam Pomfrey. I stared at the wall.
“Miss Montez, this is very unexpected from you.” Pomfrey said. “Lay down.”
I did. She pushed my shirt up and squeezed some cool gel on my stomach. It was the stuff they used in muggle ultrasounds. Pomfrey placed her wand in the gel and mumbled a spell. I looked at my belly. It was glowing.
“Pregnant.” She said. “Four months and one week along.”
Today was October 15th. A week ago would’ve been October 8th. Four months from the 8th was June 8th. That was the date of conception.
“I would say your due date is around March 10th.” Pomfrey said.
She wiped the gel off my stomach, cleaned her wand off, and placed it back on my stomach. A beating sound filled the room and a picture glowed above my belly.
“Right there is the baby.” Pomfrey pointed out. “What you hear is his or her heartbeat.”
“Wow.” I whispered.
I was kind of glad Rose brought me down here. If she didn’t, I would’ve never heard my baby’s heartbeat or seen him/her. Pomfrey pulled her wand away again.
“Miss Montez, you know I will have to inform the Headmistress of this.”
All my anger at Rose came back in one giant wave. I knew this would happen that Pomfrey would have to tell. I’m doomed now. My parents will yank me out of Hogwarts and never let me see the light of day again.
“Also, you’ll need to take these.” She said, handing me a pamphlet and a bottle of vitamins. “Folic Acid. It’ll help the baby. Make sure you eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Lay off the sweets and caffeine.”
I looked down at the pamphlet. It talked about teen pregnancy and how to handle it. I never thought I would be one of those girls who got pregnant at sixteen.
“Miss Montez, may I ask who the father is?” Pomfrey asked.
“Um…I haven’t told him yet.” I answered.
“Miss Montez, if he’s a student at this school, I need to inform the Headmistress of it.”
I looked at Rose and then at the floor. You got to be kidding me. Now I got to tell Pomfrey that I got knocked up by James Potter, by a stupid and arrogant little git.
“Potter.” I said.
“Oh dear Merlin. Harry’s going to have quite a fight when he learns Albus got a girl pregnant.”
“Not Al.” I said.
Dear Merlin no. Al is one of my best friends. He’s going to be pretty pissed when he finds out I got knocked up by his brother.
“James Potter?” She asked.
I nodded. It makes sense she would assume Al. We’re the same age and close friends. Our friendship could look like a relationship to some people. Now James Potter, bet no one expected that. We were always at each others throat, ready to gouge each others eyes out or something. No one would’ve expected us to shag and me to end up pregnant.
“Yes, James Potter.” I said.
“Alright.” Pomfrey said. “Ill inform the Headmistress. I would suggest you tell Mr. Potter before she does. Here.”
She handed me some pictures. I smiled down at the moving little blob. That was my baby.
“Come see me in two weeks, okay?”
I nodded and got up to leave. Rose followed behind me.
“You have to tell him now. McGonagall is only going to give you a day or two before she brings in Aunt Ginny and Uncle Harry. And Aunt Ginny is a Weasley. She’ll destroy James.”
I looked down at the ultrasound picture again.
“He has free right now, right?” I asked.
“Okay, you go to class. I’m going to go find him.” I said.
This just sucks.
