I know that we have had our differences in the past and that those differences may be very difficult to overcome, but I think that maybe we can be more than just pen pals. I will try to be your friend now and when we get back to Hogwarts. Ron is upset with me, but he can get over it. Harry says that he understands where I’m coming from on this. I can bear to be seen with you, so your hope is well founded. I think if you just try to talk to Harry and Ron they will see that you are trying to change for the better, and it will make it easier for them to forgive you. For now you can count me your friend. Hope to see you in Diagon Alley when we go to get our supplies.
I had put a lot of thought into my very short letter to Draco that night. I wanted to let him know that I was there for him if he ever needed me. What I said in the letter was very true. There was over six years of hostilities to overcome, but I believed, as I do now, that we could get past them.
I know everyone is very eager to hear exactly when I figured out I was falling in love with him, but bear with me. It is a long story after all. No, it wasn’t just an out of the blue thing. It took time.
After I had sent my decision to Draco, Ginny came into the room. I could tell by the look on her face that she had something very important to discuss with me. I braced myself because I was sure that she was going to start defending her brother to me, but she surprised me.
“Hermione,” she started. “I want to let you know that I am there for you no matter what you decide. If being friends with Draco Malfoy is important to you then I support your decision.”
“Thank you Ginny,” I said, still on guard. “That means a lot to me. Really it does.”
“I know,” she said smugly. “It may take a while for the boys to come around on this, but you have my support.”
“Again, thank you.” I said. I was relieved to hear her words. I felt my heart swell with emotion because I had at least one of my friends on my side.
“If you want to, you can write to Draco and let him know that I will try to be his friend, too,” she said.
I knew from my experience that Ginny had had to search deep inside herself to come to this decision. This wasn’t a friendship that was entered into lightly. I got up from my seat at the small, rickety desk and hugged the redhead in front of me.
“Thank you,” I said thickly. “And I’m sure Draco will thank you, too. I’ll write to him when his reply comes.”
“Okay,” was all she said. She turned to leave the room right then. As she was walking away, she said, “Ron and Harry don’t know about this. Please just keep it to yourself right now. I want to make sure I can be friends with him before I come out and announce it.”
“Your secret is safe with me,” I told her as I turned out the light and went to bed. The day had been emotionally exhausting.
The next morning I woke up to an owl tapping on the window of the room I was in. I recognized immediately as Draco’s, so I got out of bed and let the owl deliver its letter. When the owl didn’t leave right away I knew he was waiting for a reply, so I tore the letter open.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I means a lot to me that you would even consider being my friend. I know we have a lot to overcome, but I believe we can do that. I’m sorry if this is causing problems with your other friends, but I will try to prove myself honorable and trustworthy when the school term starts. By the way have you received your letter? My just came this morning, so maybe you’ll have yours today. Let me know when you intend to go get your supplies and I will meet you there. Oh, and congratulations on your award. If you don’t know what I’m talking about read the Daily Prophet this morning. Thank you again.
I read the letter twice, trying to commit it to memory. Of course at that moment only two things stood out. One, my Hogwarts letter and two I was mentioned in the Daily Prophet as getting some kind of award. I looked at Draco’s owl and said, “If you will wait until after breakfast I will reply.” The owl just hooted as though it understood and would be glad to wait.
