My and Harry’s birthdays were approaching quickly, which meant that the party was too. I spent the majority of my time trying to talk Sirius and Remus into letting Draco come.
“I refuse to have a Malfoy in my house!” Sirius would always exclaim.
Remus, on the other hand, always took the logical approach. “Natalie, this is the headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. Draco is not part of the Order, and by letting him come here on any circumstance, we would be violating the Secret-Keeping.”
I was in my room writing my daily letter to Draco. I wanted to tell him about the party, but I knew if I mentioned that he wasn’t allowed to come, he’d be annoyed and find a way to come. Even though I didn’t really like my godfather’s decision, I wasn’t going to go against him. Again, my letter was vague. I couldn’t tell him where I was or most of what I was doing because it would violate the Secret-Keeping. I felt really bad because I usually told Draco everything and his responses were always questioning why I was being so vague. He thought I didn’t miss him and was just writing to not be rude. That wasn’t the truth, though. All I wanted to do was to spend time with him.
The day of the party arrived, and I was less than thrilled. Harry knew something was wrong, but didn’t say anything. Fred and George, on the other hand, did.
“What’s got our Nat’s wand in a knot?” George asked.
“Yeah Nat, be happy! We’re having a party!” I tried to smile, but it came out as a grimace.
We made our way to the kitchen and found Mrs. Weasley making a small brunch, which was unusual. “Good morning dears! We’re going to eat a small meal this morning because of the party later.”
“Mum…” Ron whined.
“Ronald Weasley, don’t you whine at me!” He cowered back into Hermione and she laughed.
“Oh Ron!” she said. “It’s not going to kill you to not stuff your face for once.” He smiled sheepishly at her and rubbed her arm before sitting down. Hermione’s face turned crimson.
“They are so hot for each other, but don’t want to admit it.” Ginny stated. “Come on, let’s eat.”
After breakfast, the twins disappeared. They were probably off preparing whatever it is they were planning for the party. Honestly, it scared me. I knew what the twins were capable of and every year their pranks got bigger and bigger. They’ve been developing more products that did more destruction as well. I snuck up to my room and saw Draco’s owl, Ammon, sitting on my desk.
I keep sending you letter after letter telling you what I’ve been up to. Why can’t you do the same for me? Is everything alright? Are you okay? You know how I don’t like being kept in the dark so why do you insist on doing just that?
I also wanted to wish you a happy early birthday. I am going to Rome with Father, Mother, and Trixie in two days, and won’t have access to Ammon or any other owl. I know you’re going to say that you can send Hedwig, but I’d advise you not to do that. Father has business to do in Rome and he said he’d rather not be disturbed by owls flying back and forth. I’m sorry, love.
I’ll be back in England in a week and a half, so we won’t be able to talk again until we get on the Hogwarts Express. Maybe then you could tell me how your summer’s been?
I miss you terribly.
I smiled sadly. I was happy he remembered my birthday, but I could tell that he was sad and frustrated about having to leave and my letters. I sighed, scribbling a response to remind him that I loved him and to say thanks for the birthday wish. I also said that I would tell him what I could on the train.
There was a knock at the door. “Nat?” It was Harry. “Are you alright?” he asked. He walked into the room and sat on my bed. “You’re usually the perky one on the day of a party, and today you’re not. Is there anything you want to talk about?”
I joined him on the bed and laid my head on his shoulder. “I just wish…”
“That Malfoy could be here?” he finished for me.
“Yeah, but not just that. We’ve been writing back and forth since that day I saw the boggart, and my letters have been vague. I can’t tell him a lot because Remus says that it would give away the secret of the Order. He’s upset and I can’t do anything to fix it or reassure him in any way.”
He gave me a hug. “I know it’s hard, but we’ll be going back to Hogwarts and then you can see him again.”
I smiled. “Thanks Harry.” I started to get up off the bed, but he grabbed my wrist.
“When did you see a boggart?”
“It was nothing.”
“Nat…” he warned.
I sighed. “Fine, I’ll tell you. I was cleaning one of the rooms with Fred and George and a boggart came out of a drawer of a desk. It went from the form of Draco to you.”
“So, you fear me and Malfoy?”
“It wasn’t you guys, it was what you said.”
“What did the boggart say?”
“Harry, please don’t worry about it. It’s fine and I’m over it.”
“Nat, I want to know.”
“I promise I won’t.”
“You never keep your promises.”
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Look, do you have to keep bringing up what happened last year? I thought we moved on from that.”
“We have but it’s not like it still doesn’t hurt sometimes.”
He abruptly stood from the bed and went towards the door. “Fine, if you want to be like this, then I will not even try to help.”
“Harry, please don’t be like this; especially on the day of our birthday party.”
He turned around and looked at me with pleading eyes. “Then tell me about what the boggart said.”
I sighed. “It said that you don’t love me and don’t want me as a sister.”
“Oh, Nat…” he said as he came up to hug me.
“Save the speech Harry. I know.” He chuckled.
“How do you know that I was going to go into a long speech? Maybe I just wanted to give you a hug.” I giggled.
“Harry, I know you. You were going to give me the ‘I’m your big brother and will always be here for you’
“Come on, let’s get downstairs. People are starting to arrive, and the twins are getting antsy to do whatever it is they have planned.”
Mrs. Weasley had a huge feast prepared and all the guests had started to arrive. Moody, Remus, Tonks, and Kingsley were among some of the Order members that were invited.
Halfway through dessert, which consisted of a giant birthday cake and ice cream, fireworks of all different colors started to erupt in the kitchen. Fred and George shouted, “Happy Birthday, Harry and Nat!” as they ran through the house being chased by their mother who was absolutely furious; screaming about how they were being reckless and could have hurt someone.
It took Mr. Weasley grabbing her around the waist and saying, “Love, it’s some birthday fun. Let it go,” for her to calm down.
We all laughed until tears came from our eyes and I ran to hug the twins. It was one of the most fun birthday parties I’ve had. The only thing was at the end of the day, I wished Draco was there to celebrate with me.
A/N: Sorry for the long update! I’m trying to make a smooth transition from summer to when school starts, so I’ve had some trouble writing lately. Also, if this is getting tedious for you to read, I’m sorry. In the next chapter, they go back to Hogwarts so there will be a change of scene and Draco and Nat will be together again. Yay! Please read and review! It means a whole lot when you do!
