Chapter 16

Savannah and Hugo sat in his apartment talking. They were both worried about the recent conversation at the Burrow. Neither of them wanted to die, but unknown to her, Hugo was hoping even more that she wouldn’t die. He didn’t think he could live with himself if Savannah Wood died.

He had been in love with her for almost five years. Even when she broke up with him and dated guys like Daniel Grant, he still loved her. He never thought there would be a day when he didn’t love her. Sixteen years in the future, when she was married and had kids, he was sure he’d still love Savannah. Yet, she would still not love him, and that broke his heart.

Now, however, her existence was being put into question. He did not know whether she would live or die. Hugo knew that just by being friends with him, Savannah was putting herself into harm’s way. He couldn’t imagine how much more danger she’d be in if she was dating him.

“You look extremely worried,” Savannah noticed.

“That’s because I am,” Hugo replied, not looking at her.

“Are you worried about the killer who is murdering your family and their friends?”

He nodded, looking at his hands. He couldn’t stand the thought of never hearing that sweet voice of hers again. He could feel himself shaking. He could feel his stomach churning. The mere thought of losing Savannah made Hugo a nervous wreck.

“Me too. Kristen’s part of your family now and you and Lily are my best friends,” Savannah replied, “I really don’t want to lose any of you.”

“Do you think that you’ll be targeted?” Hugo asked, forcing himself to look at her.

“Possibly. However, I think that I’d probably be a low priority on their list.”

“It depends on who they’re trying to make suffer.”

Savannah looked at him for further explanation.

“Well, if they wanted to make Kristen suffer, they’d probably target you because you’re her sister. If they were trying to make Lily suffer, they’d target you because you’re her best friend. If they were trying to make me suffer, they’d target you because I lo-“

He stopped in the middle of his sentence. He had almost told Savannah that he loved her. That would not go over well, especially since she had been dating Daniel Grant for a year and a half! He hoped that he hadn’t ruined everything. However, looking at Savannah’s face, he could tell that the Ravenclaw had noticed how he stopped his sentence short.

“What were you going to say?” Savannah asked slowly, “Why would they target me to make you suffer?”

At this point, Hugo was done caring. One of them would probably be dead soon anyway so it wouldn’t be awkward for long. He just knew that he didn’t want to die without Savannah knowing that he loved her after all this time. He grabbed her head and pressed his lips to hers, hoping it would be similar to the kiss he had during the final quidditch match of their third year. However, this time, she quickly pulled away, an angry look on her face.

“What the hell Hugo?” she asked angrily, “I have a boyfriend!”

“I love you Savannah!” Hugo exclaimed, “Always have, always will! I can’t die without you knowing that!”

“You don’t even know that you’re going to die! You know that I don’t love you! I never did!”

He paused for a second. Had she really just said that she never loved him? After everything they had gone through, had she truly never loved him?

“Then what do you call our relationship that we had during third and fourth year?” Hugo asked, his voice rising even more.

“I fancied you! I really did! I didn’t love you though!” Savannah replied, “I was fourteen years old!”

“I was fourteen years old and I loved you, Savannah! I’m eighteen and I still love you!”

They were both standing by this point.

“Well, I don’t Hugo Weasley! I love Daniel! Nothing you say or do is ever going to change that!” Savannah exclaimed before leaving the apartment, slamming the door behind her.

Hugo looked at the door for a couple minutes, hoping that Savannah would come running in again. But she never did. He sat on the couch, putting his head in his hands. How could he have been so stupid to think that she might actually love him back? He had seen all the times that Savannah had spent with Daniel. He remembered the heart wrenching feeling when he first realized that she was in love with Daniel. Why did he think that the possibility of losing each other would make her change her mind? Tears ran down his face as he mumbled one thing over and over again.

“I lost her.”
