Chapter 14

Kristen sat in the living room, reading the sports section of the Daily Prophet while Chase and Kelly slept up stairs. She was specifically reading the parts about the Wimbourne Wasps, the team she had been a part of for four years before having to leave because of her kids. Kristen really missed playing quidditch all the time. As soon as her kids were old enough, she planned on getting back into professional quidditch.

James stepped into the room and noticed his wife intensely reading the prophet. She looked happy and relaxed. He knew that what he had to say would crush that mood. He wasn’t exactly sure how she would react; Kristen was one of the strongest people James knew. However, she had never gone through this traumatic situation.

“Kristen, I need to tell you something,” James said delicately, approaching the couch she sat on.

Kristen set the paper aside as James sat down next to her. This was going to be a very awful conversation.

“What do you need to tell me?” Kristen asked, sounding a bit worried.

James’ tone had frightened her. He hardly ever talked like this. Besides, with everything going on, she knew it wasn’t going to be any good.

“It’s about Samantha and Drake,” James replied, almost unable to spit it out, “They were murdered.”

Kristen felt her world shatter around her. Samantha was one of Kristen’s best friends. She was always there for her. It brought back memories of how Kristen had shipped Samantha and Drake for years before they finally dated. The happiness she had felt when the couple first started dating, the honor Kristen felt when Samantha asked her to be her maid of honor at her wedding. The tears that would probably come as the couple was slowly lowered into the ground where they would remain for the rest of eternity. Baby Maddie someday asking why she didn’t have parents like everyone else.

“I’m so sorry Kris,” James said, wrapping his arms around her.

He could see how much this broke her. It caused a tightness in his chest. James had never been terribly close to Samantha and Drake- they were good friends of Kristen’s, not his. However, he had known them and had seen what wonderful people they were. Why was it that good people always died young?

Kristen leaned into James and sobbed. Here she was, the tough quidditch player who at times seemed unbreakable, sobbing into James’ shoulder. It hurt her to realize that she would never see Samantha and Drake smiling back at her.

“What happened to Maddie?” Kristen asked after a while, remembering the beautiful little girl the couple had.

Maddie was the same age as Chase and Kelly; they would eventually all go to Hogwarts together. In her hysterics over the deaths of Samantha and Drake, she had almost forgotten about Maddie. She hoped that she was OK.

“She was alive and unharmed,” James replied, making Kristen feel slightly better, “The aurors found her in the same room with the bodies. Looks like the murderer decided to spare her.”

“Why? Why would this killer, who has been quite successful so far, leave a witness who could possibly identify them?”

“Kristen, Maddie’s only a baby; I highly doubt that she would be able to remember what the face looked like, let alone describe the killer to a sketch artist.”

Kristen sighed. There went the hope that they would find the person who killed Samantha and Drake. Kristen was certain that whoever was behind those murders committed the multiple other murders against the Weasley family and friends. She was itching for justice.

“Why do you think they’re doing this?” Kristen asked, “What terrible things have we done to deserve it?”

James tried to think of a reason. His family was full of very good people. Most people liked them. He couldn’t figure out a reason. He was sure there was some twisted reason in the killer’s mind for committing such terrible acts; there usually was in cases like this. That was part of the problem though; they had no idea what that twisted idea was.

“I have no idea.”
