Professor Longbottom has really been piling essays on us. I’m in the library, trying to research as much as I can on devil’s snare. Not doing so well so far.
I rub my eyes and place my head on the table.
“The wolf could be chasing a squirrel very close to a cliff’s edge,” I let myself think.
I jolt up and shiver. The moon is shining so bright that, even now during the afternoon, it’s visible. I’m going to be sick.
“Hey Leo, you’re looking worse,” Charlotte sits at my table and watches me.
“This essay is putting me in my place,” I smile at her and lie easily.
She snags my essay and reads through the paragraph that I have, “This is awful,” she concludes, pulling out a new parchment, “Here, grab these books from the herbology section,” she scribbles onto the parchment and hands it to me.
I thank her and scratch the back of my head before getting up to search for them.
A particularly large, blue textbook jumps out at me as I look through the section, I crouch down to look through it. My itching eyes have a hard time deciphering the words, so I shut them.
Case 4523: Berlin 1998, wolf ran over by a truck. Muggle driver safe, wolf deceased. Register number 753, Scott Yale.
Images of case reports flash through my mind.
Case 4524: Madrid 1998, wolf discovered on beach shore. Muggle witnesses-memory erased. Register number 934, Katherine Gates.
Case 4525: London 1998, wolf killed by electric fence. No muggle witnesses, one wizard witness. Register number 522, Mason Pits.
I stumble onto the ground and moan.
Case 6227: Atlanta 1881, wolf discovered in a tree. Muggle witnesses memory erased. Register number 512, Thomas Hue.
Case 6228: Madagascar 1881, wolf poisoned by berries. Muggle witnesses memory erased. Register number 483.
“Leo? Are you alright?” Charlotte crouches next to me.
Case 437: Romania 1215, wolf discovered pierced with arrows. No muggle witnesses, two squib witnesses. Register number 58, John Bates.
I sit up quickly and throw up.
“Oh no,” Charlotte groans, stroking my hair with her cool fingers and looking around for someone to help, “Lily!”
I hear shuffling feet, “What the hell happened?”
“I don’t know, I was checking on him and I found him like this,” Charlotte’s voice raises as she begins to freak out.
“Calm down,” Lily commands and places a hand on my forehead, “he’s going to be fine. Listen to me, calm down! Are you calm?”
“Y-yes,” Charlotte stutters.
“Okay. Now levitate him with your wand, we’re going to take him to Madam Pomfrey,” Lily’s confident and calm voice startles me from my mute state.
“Lily,” I moan, “I’m fine.” I push myself up and stare at her.
“Are you sure?” she asks, looking me over, brow furrowed.
I nod my head.
“Okay. . .take it easy,” she whispers as I shakily stand up from the ground.
Charlotte cleans up my mess with a wave of her wand and I stare at her.
She’s, frankly, a mess: her hair has fallen out of her ponytail, her lipstick is smeared from her nervous habit of biting her lip, and she’s slouched over on the floor.
I walk over to her, lift her off the ground, and hold onto her.
“I’m okay,” I tell her before letting her go.
Lily looks on the scene and smiles when I turn to her, “Could I talk to you for a minute?” she asks.
“Sure,” I say and follow her outside the library.
“I was actually looking for you in the library, where’s Ellie?” she asks as soon as we’re out of hearing range of our fellow students.
“She’s in the hospital wing,” I answer, confused. Lily hates Ellie.
She looks up at me quickly and widens her eyes, did I say something wrong?
“Okay,” she replies and turns on her heel towards the library.
“Where are you going?” I ask her. Lily doesn’t generally go to the library. She’s starting to freak me out.
“But you don’t go to the library,” I tell her.
She shrugs and leaves me.
Maybe I’m imagining this all? I am sleep deprived, plus I just had an episode in the herbology section.
“Leo!” Charlotte runs and catches up to me, my bag and her own bag in her hands, “What did she want?”
“Just some homework help,” I don’t know why I’m lying.
Charlotte hands me my bag, “You should go to the hospital wing.”
“No, I’m fine, really. I just get queasy whenever I think about. . .plants.”
“Yeah, they’re disgusting.”
“Yup, have you seen Scorpius today?” I change the subject.
“Yeah, him and Rose were hugging outside, I didn’t want to disturb them, so I came here.”
That’s weird, Scorpius can never say anything mildly coherent when he’s around Rose, and now he’s hugging her? Why is everyone acting so strangely? Ellie will be back soon, maybe her “being sick” is throwing people off their game.
We are walking, aiming for nowhere in particular.
“How is Ellie?” she asks me.
Case 773: Luxemburg 1611, wolf found cut open. 5 Muggle witnesses, memory erased. Register number 634, Patrick Hardings.
“I’m not entirely sure.”
Charlotte raises her eyebrow, “Haven’t you been visiting her?”
“Er yeah, but we haven’t really talked about her well being.”
I shrug, “Never came up.”
Case 2521: Wales 2000, wolf found at bottom of cliff. One wizard witness. Register number 2551, Bailey Waters.
“What did you two talk about?”
I stop walking, causing her to stop also, “The usual. Look, I have quidditch practice soon, I’ll talk to you later, yeah?”
She frowns, “Okay.”
I nod and start to leave, but Charlotte grabs my arm.
“Leo, are you and Lily getting back together again?” She’s staring at the ground.
I smile, “Not in this lifetime.” Laughing, I break from her grasp and walk away.
She smiles and waves as I leave to find Scorpius.
Once again, I’m stuck in the quidditch stadium, reading as the Slytherin team preps for their game next Saturday.
How did I get here? It’s a long story:
“Oi, Al!” Scorpius slams into the seat next to me on the bench and grabs a plate full of chicken.
Scorpius smiles, “I just saw the coolest thing, ever.”
“Did you now?”
“Yes! You know Daniel Thomas? Well, I was walking to Herbology when I witnessed our own, Rose Weasley hex the kid to the ground!” he announces.
Ugh, Scorpius probably peed his pants in excitement.
“I nearly peed my pants in excitement!” he continues to shout at me. A few older boys looked on the scene in amusement.
And then he probably hugged the living daylights out of her.
“I marched right up to her and hugged the living daylights out of her!”
He’ll mention how she swooned under his touch.
“I swear to you, she swooned at my touch.”
Then he’ll tell the truth and briefly mention how she really probably ran away from him in terror.
He frowns, “She had to go to class and didn’t say much to me, but it was awesome anyways!”
I shrug, “Sounds like a typical exchange. Did you happen to pick up on why she cursed Daniel?” I ask, the only part of his silly story that caught me by surprise.
“I heard her shout ‘Bloody Idiot’ before the hex, but I didn’t really hear anything else.” Scorpius stuffs a chicken leg in his mouth.
Poor Rose, she’s had it rough lately. She honestly really liked Gary, even though I told her about his past relationships. I found out about the two of them through an accidental encounter. They were snogging in the history section of the library when I wanted to read up on the founding wizards. They looked like they were eating each other’s faces. Disgusting.
“What are you doing after dinner, Allie?”
Avoiding the history section in case I encounter another secret flame, “Probably the charms assignment.”
Scorpius scoffs, “That’s not due for two weeks.”
I shrug, “It’s best to finish it now.”
“No more nerdy talk! You are coming to quidditch practice with Leo and me!”
I groan, there’s a chilly wind now that summer is over, plus Leo swears a lot whilst flying around for some weird reason.
Instead of protesting, I respond, “You sure do shout a lot when you’re happy.”
“I shout all the time, now get up! I miss Leo!” he exaggerates his yelling.
“Keep your pants on, Malfoy,” I stand up and pull my satchel over my head.
We are walking towards the Slytherin common room when we both hear rustling from a broom cupboard. Must be a snogging couple, or a weird cat. Scorpius winks at me and nods his head at the door. He wants to open it and embarrass the couple.
“No, let’s go get Leo. He looked like he was going to topple over today,” I tell him and try to pull him away.
He frowns, “But Allie, it’ll be fun!”
“Stop calling me Allie, it’s weird.”
“Not unless you let me open the cupboard door.”
“Fine, geez, you’re like a kid on Christmas day, opening presents,” I grumble, but let him go.
True to my description, he skips to the cupboard and throws the door open, revealing an embarrassed pair of Ravenclaws.
“Lame!” Scorpius shouts back at me, “It’s no one I know.”
He skips back and we continue our journey to the dungeons, Scorpius flinging doors open in hopes of catching another couple.
We reach the common room and separate: Scorpius goes to grab his quidditch gear while I talk to Angela Towers, a blonde girl our age. Leo walks in, his appearance alarming, and smiles when he sees me.
“Oi! Boy genius, who are you flirting with?”
Angela rolls her eyes and flips him off before joining her friends in their dormitory.
He frowns as he watches her leave, “She’s a feisty one.”
“One, we weren’t flirting and, two, you’ve snogged her before,” I explain to him, “Go grab Scorpius so we can go," I add.
“You’re coming?” Leo asks excitedly forgetting about Angela. Why he’s so excited is beyond my understanding, I don’t do anything but sit and read.
“Yeah, I’ve got nothing better to do.”
“Yaaayyy!” Leo screams, startling a first year. Scorpius runs from our dormitory and joins in the screaming. The two, still screaming, drag me to the field.
“I need new friends.” I voice out loud as I watch Scorpius hit Leo with his broomstick.
Funny story: I had a lot of free time on my hands this past weekend, so I created a “Meet the Author” page (It’s not really that funny)!
Basically, you can read stuff about me and comment with questions. It’ll be exciting (warning: not really that exciting)!
I mostly want to hear from my readers and see how you guys are responding to my characters. I’ll give you ten soapman333 points if you go and check it out. What would you do with those points? Good question. Just click on my name and then click on the link on my page.
Review and let me know how you like Albus’ ability to predict what Scorpius will say :)
