It’s been year since Hermione accepted my proposal and now the day has finally arrived: our wedding day. Hermione spent months working hard with my mother and her mother to organise our special day. Originally Hermione wanted my input but over time came to accept the fact that I’m just no good at that sort of thing and as long as we got married I was happy. I did however get to plan our honeymoon which we’ll be spending in Paris. I know it’s cheesy but being magical it’s not exactly difficult to travel anywhere if we really want to.
You’re probably wondering how our friends and family took the news – Mother was the first to know and as you can imagine was ecstatic when I told her that I was planning to propose to Hermione. Blaise spent the first five minutes after we told him saying “I knew it!” Hermione’s parents were happy for us; Mrs Granger was so happy that she was crying for ages and kept gushing over how beautiful the engagement ring looked but Mr Granger simply hugged Hermione, patted me on the back and told me to look after his little girl. Potter and Weasley... well I don’t think I’ll forget their reaction for a long while.
We had gathered our family and friends in the manor dining hall for a meal so that we could break the news to everyone at the same time. Once we had finished our meal, Hermione and I stood up to get everyone’s attention. I could tell Hermione was nervous so I put my arm around her shoulders and gave her a gentle squeeze. We had decided that Hermione would tell them as she wouldn’t be as blunt as I would be.
“Um...everyone...as you have probably guessed we have called you all here for a reason. Draco and I have some big news...we’re engaged.”
The reactions then played out as I mentioned earlier whilst Potter and Weasley stared at each other, shocked. Eventually Weasley spoke up but wasn’t hiding his anger very well.
“Hermione, can we talk outside? Now?”
“Uh, sure, just give me a moment.” We had been expecting this but we knew they had to be told otherwise it would be worse if they found out another way. I gave her a reassuring hug. They went out into a corridor but it wasn’t long until we could hear their conversation and all those still in the dining hall stopped to listen.
“Why him, Hermione?! You can do so much better than the amazing bouncing ferret!”
“Draco is the best thing that has ever happened to me and I’m not going to give him up just because you don’t like him. Ronald, you and I both know that we would never have worked; you’re too much like a brother to me. You need to let me go. Now unless you have anything else to say I’m going to go back.”
“But Hermione you’ve been dating him for less than a year! Don’t you think it’s a bit sudden?!”
“I understand that to you it may seem sudden, Ronald, but I love him and nothing is going to change that! I don’t see a reason why I shouldn’t marry Draco.”
“Hermione, you’ve only just left school!”
“So?! Harry has been planning to propose to Ginny for ages and she still has a year of school left to go!”
“Is that true, Harry?!”
“Ron, this isn’t about Harry. I’ve made up my mind and you’re not going to change it.”
“Hermione, while I don’t agree with Ron about the age thing, I do think it’s a bit sudden especially as you weren’t even friends for very long before you started dating but if he makes you happy then I’m happy.”
“Thank you, Harry. That means a lot.”
“What?! You’re taking her side on this!”
“I’m not taking anyone’s side. Hermione is like the sister I never had and I’m not going to lose her just because I don’t agree with every single decision she makes. Just let it go!” There was a pause and a thud (which later Hermione told me was caused by the muffliato and petrificus totalus that Potter shot at Weasley when he tried to tear the Manor apart in his anger) “I’m sorry, Hermione, I’m gonna take him away to calm down. He’ll come around eventually. I really am happy for you.” We then heard the crack of apparition.
[End of flashback]
Weasley did eventually come round which leads to where we are now. Blaise is my best man (He’s my best friend and I would never dream of giving the opportunity to anyone else) but Hermione insisted that Potter and Weasley supervise him to make sure that he doesn’t screw up any of his duties. To be honest I’m not surprised; he does have a habit of causing trouble. I’m currently stood at the altar waiting for Hermione to arrive but I can’t help thinking: What if she doesn’t turn up? What if she realises she can do better? Maybe I should cancel the wedding to save myself the embarrassment.
The panic must have been showing on my face because Potter walked up to me, put a hand on my shoulder and gave me a determined look.
“Don’t back out of this now, Malfoy. She loves you with all her heart so don’t you dare break it or you’ll have me along with a lot of other people who love Hermione to deal with.”
“What if she realises that she can do better than me? I’m not perfect. She deserves better.”
“Look, Malfoy, the fact that you realise that you’re not perfect and you think that she deserves better is part of the reason that you are perfect for her. Besides, despite how you see her, Hermione isn’t perfect either.” I glared at him but he ignored me. “She has a mean temper and she’s stubborn as hell but it is part of what makes Hermione who she is. I know I didn’t approve of you before but even I can see you’re perfect for her. You’re intelligent, you have a sense of humour, and you’re willing to do anything to protect her... I could go on but it’s hard enough for me to be saying this.” He patted me on the back and went to sit back down.
Maybe Potter’s right... any minute now the love of my life is going to walk through those doors. Who’d have thought that Potter would be talking sense into me at my wedding... to Hermione Granger of all people!
Finally the doors opened and the piano began to play. It wasn’t long before I forgot about everything that was going on around me as Hermione walked in on the arm of her father. She was beautiful; far more stunning than I had ever seen her. Her hair was up but a few curls framed her beautiful face. Her white dress was simple but stunning – just like Hermione; she was never one for extravagance. It was a halter neck and clung to her curves. It was made of a silky material but seemed to shimmer in the light adding an ethereal look to her already angelic features. I was completely blown away by her appearance and she knew it. When she reached the altar she was absolutely beaming at me and broke my reverie by saying:
“Fancy seeing you here.” I smiled back at her.
“I wouldn’t miss this for the world.”
Once the ceremony was over and all of the guests had convened in the manor ball room, the time came for our first dance. Whilst the wedding was being planned, Hermione had introduced me to muggle music. There was one song that when I heard it I knew it was perfect for our first dance as it summed up how I felt about Hermione. As we danced slowly I sang along quietly so that only Hermione could hear me.
As the song drew to a close Hermione smiled up at me.
“I love you, Draco Malfoy.”
“I love you more, Hermione Malfoy.”
AN: I know I don’t normally put Author’s Notes at the end but I didn’t want to give anything away by putting this at the beginning. I’m sad to say that this fic is coming to an end. There are two chapters left including the epilogue.
