Chapter 6

Kailey Nielson sat down at a table in the three broomsticks that her friends from school, Samantha, Kristen, and Kim, were already sitting at. This wasn’t their usual place for them to get together, but the double homicide at The Leaky Cauldron the night before made the four girls change the location. Even though they were pretty certain that the attackers wouldn’t come back, they didn’t want to take any chances.

“Hey Kailey,” they chorused, and she smiled in return, glad to see them all.

For a while they talked about their good days at Hogwarts. It was hard for them to believe that it had been four years since they had graduated. They were now living successful, happy lives. Kristen and Samantha even had families. They all cracked a smile when they discussed that terrible quidditch match. They found it laughable that after all that had happened between James and Kristen, they were still able to love each other and raise two wonderful children.

“I can’t believe that Hannah Longbottom and Rolf Scamander were killed last night,” Samantha stated, changing the topic and causing a somber mood to fall over the four of them.

“My sister was in the pub when it happened,” Kristen replied, shuddering at the thought, “She could have been killed along with them.”

“That would have been extremely unfortunate,” Kailey said, “Wasn’t she with Lily Potter and Hugo Weasley at the time?”

Kristen nodded, glad that none of the three had been injured or killed. Lily was her sister in law and Hugo was her cousin in law. It would have been awful if anything had happened to any of the three. They were barely eighteen years old!

“Not that I want them dead, but why do you think the attacker didn’t go after them?” Kim asked, “After all, they are related to some pretty powerful people.”

“The attacker must have been on a mission to kill Hannah and Rolf,” Samantha replied, “The killer went in there, accomplished their mission, and then left before they could be caught or identified.”

“Why would someone want to kill Hannah and Rolf?”

“Maybe because they’re married to Neville and Luna, two important war heroes,” Kailey guessed.

“I don’t understand why anyone would want to cause Neville and Luna suffering though; they’re the nicest people I’ve ever met,” Kristen stated.

“Maybe they didn’t get a good grade in Herbology,” Kim suggested.

“That still doesn’t explain why they’d want to make Luna suffer,” Samantha argued, “I’m sure most of the people who have had Neville since he started teaching don’t even know Luna personally.”

The four of them sat in silence for a few minutes, trying to think of possible reasons why a person would go after Rolf and Hannah. It was difficult to think of many plausible reasons.

“Do you think one of the former death eaters is committing the crimes?” Kristen asked, “They lost a lot after they lost the war, and a good way of making war heroes suffer is killing the ones their close to.”
“Wouldn’t most of the death eaters be too old now to go into a pub and murder people?” Samantha asked.

“They could have one of their kids do it. Those kids of theirs still have a lot of hate towards the Weasley family.”

“Then why didn’t they target someone that was close to Harry?” Kailey asked, “After all, he was the one that actually brought Voldemort down.”

“Maybe he doesn’t want attention to turn to him,” Kim suggested, “After all, people would freak out a lot more and search for the killer if someone like James Potter had been murdered instead of someone like Rolf Scamander.”

Kristen flinched at Kim’s words. She didn’t want to think of James being dead. They were married and had a wonderful pair of twins, Chase and Kelly. They were living happy, successful lives. The last thing that James and Kristen needed was a psychotic murderer out for revenge on their family.

“Maybe the killer is just getting started,” Samantha stated, “They could be working their way from friends of the family to people really close to Harry.”

Silence filled the room as all four of them thought the exact same question that could very easily eat them alive. It was Kristen who finally voiced it.

“Then who is going to die next?”
