Friday, before dinner ended, I nicked a goblet from the Great Hall. I ran with it under my robes back to the common room where Cal was supposed to be waiting with the polyjuice potion. Everyone was at dinner, so this was the perfect opportunity to break school rules. Whoa! Look at me! I’m such a rebel.
I ran up the earthy passage and into the common room. Cal was standing there with a cauldron full of Polyjuice potion, looking extremely uncomfortable.
"Let’s just do this so I can put this back. I feel so wrong.” Cal kept switching feet as if he was getting ready to run at a moments notice.
"Sure, put down the cauldron and we’ll get started.”
Cal carefully placed the cauldron on a coffee table and backed up. I ladled the potion into the goblet I nicked at dinner and placed one of Rebecca’s hairs into it. The potion fizzled and turned a soft gold. Figures that the golden girl’s polyjuice potion would be gold.
"How did you get the hair?” Cal asked.
"With no help from you that’s how.” I shot back before tipping my head and downing he potion.
I gagged and willed myself not to throw up. It tasted bloody awful! But it was affective. I felt my body stretch and become taller, felt my face become rounder, and felt my arms grow longer. When I thought the transformation had finished I straightened up and ran a hand through my hair. It ran through my fingers in long, smooth tresses.
I laughed, and Rebecca’s voice echoed around the room. “It worked!” I looked at Cal who stared dreamily back at me.
"I know this is weird because you’re really Beth, but I really want to kiss you right now.”
I pulled a face. “Ew. Cal, no.”
He frowned, “don’t say that with her face.”
"Okay,” I dusted myself off, “how do I look?”
"Beautiful,” Cal said in that same dreamy voice.
"Okay, you’re officially creeping me out. Where did Rebecca say they were meeting?”
"She’s meeting him in the shortcut on the first floor. You know that one behind the statue of a wizard?”
"The one that goes from the first floor to the third floor?” Cal nodded. “I hate that one!” I complained. “I mean seriously! It’s all bookcases from room to room. First you have to climb a bookcase, then you have to jump from bookcase to bookcase, then you walk through a hall full of bookcases. You’d think it was designed by Hermione Weasley or something.”
Cal pursed his lips. “I feel so conflicted because the words you’re saying are so Beth, but you look like Rebecca. I hate and love you at the same time.”
"What?” I gaped at him. “You better be kidding!”
Cal laughed. “Of course I am! Now go and I’ll distract the real Rebecca.” Cal nodded solemnly, “It’s a hard job, but someone’s gotta do it”
I rolled my eyes, “Okay see ya.”
I ran down the dirt path, out of the trick door, and down towards the short cut. I quickly found the statue of the wizard and snuck behind it. The room following it was all but empty. The only thing present was a bookshelf. I knew from experience that you had to climb it to get to the balcony above.
"James?” I called out. No response. “James!” I snapped.
"Merlin!” James’ face appeared on the balcony. “You don’t have to snap at me! What’s gotten into you?”
Oops, that’s right. I’m Rebecca and the word patience is actually in her vocabulary. “Sorry, I’ve just been stressed about N.E.W.T’s,” I lied.
James still didn’t look convinced. “Here I’ll come down-“
"No, that’s dangerous. I can come up.” I walked up to the bookcase and began to scale it one shelf at a time. When I was at the top I scrambled onto the balcony where a stunned James stood waiting for me.
"What?” I asked, straightening out my skirt.
"I didn’t know you had the upper arm strength to do that.”
Damn it, another slip up. “Yeah, there’s a lot about me that you don’t know. So where are we going to talk? In the next room?”
James jolted in surprise. “You knew there was a next room?”
Gah! Why do I keep doing this? “Yeah, Beth told me about it.” I covered smoothly. Score one for Beth’s awesome cover skills. James motioned with his hand and we began to walk towards said room.
He grinned, “Did you say Beth? How is she?”
"Sh-she’s good. But aren’t you two talking again?” Why the heck didn’t James just ask me how I was doing? Why did he have to go through Rebecca?
"Yeah, but I feel like our relationship is so fragile. I’m a little scared to say the wrong thing.”
"How would asking how I- she was doing be saying the wrong thing?” I was worried that James might have caught my slip up.
He only chuckled and said, “Well, you know Beth.”
What did that mean? I forced myself to laugh. “Yeah, that Beth. What a character.” A pretty freaking awesome character if I do say so myself.
James gave me another look. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
"Yeah I’m fine. Gosh Mr. nosey pants.” I tried to sound more like Rebecca that time, but I’m afraid I failed. But James wasn’t accusing me of being an imposter so I’d say I’m still in the green.
We came to the second room that was nothing but row after row of bookcases. To get to the third room you needed to climb up and jump from bookcase to bookcase before hoping up onto a balcony that led into the final room. James and my brothers had shown this to Al, Cal, Rose, and I in our second year. They tried to convince us that this was an affective short cut to the third floor. I however thought (and still think) it’s mental climbing so many bookcases.
"So, what do you wanna talk about?” I started off awkwardly.
James huffed, “Rebecca, I’m sorry but I think we should-“
"Break up?” I finished for him, smiling kindly. “Figured as much. Can I ask why?”
"Uh… sure. It’s because I’m still-“
"Hooked on Beth?” I finished again, hoping I was right. This would be pretty pointless if I weren’t. I continued nonetheless. “I kind of figured. You never snogged me in the hallway like you did your other girlfriends.”
James smirked. “We didn’t snog period.”
My heart felt ten times lighter. They never snogged? Oh thank Merlin! Why am I so elated in hearing this? Does the thought of James kissing another girl bother me that much? Why am I even asking myself that? Of course it does!
But James said snog, he didn’t say kiss. What if they kissed on one occasion but never actually snogged? I needed to take a chance and find out. “Yep.” I said, trying to sound casual. “Never kissed, not even once.”
James grinned and shook his head, “No we didn’t.”
Oh thank Merlin! I wanted to do a little happy dance. Instead I began to climb the bookcase in front of us. I don’t know why I did it. Maybe I was just so happy I needed to move around and do something. Or maybe I just wanted to get a little further away from the world with James. Or perhaps I just like climbing things… don’t judge.
"What are you doing?” He asked.
"Climbing the bookshelf. Don’t look up my skirt!” I added hastily.
"No worries there.” James held up his hands.
Well that’s insulting. Wait, I'm still Rebecca. So that’s a good thing… right? Ah! This is getting really confusing. Why did I ever decide to do this in the first place? Oh that’s right! I have question I wanted to ask him.
I reached the top of the bookshelf and pulled myself up, dangling my feet over the edge. “James, there is something I want to ask you before we break up.”
"Okay.” James said from the ground. “Shoot.”
"Why did you go out with me when it’s obvious you still fancy Beth?”
"Ah.” James ran a hand through his hair. “Now this is a conversation that needs to be held face to face. Hang tight until I get up there.”
I waited, watching James scale the tall bookshelf. I tried not to pay too much attention to his muscles flexing underneath his shirt, but darn it he’s doing it on purpose! James finally made it up to the top and sat next to me on the dusty upper shelf.
"Rebecca, if I tell you something can you promise not to tell Beth?” James started off.
I paused before saying, “Sure but why?”
"Because I shouldn’t be the one to tell her this, her brother should.”
My heart picked up speed. Which brother? What did he do wrong? How was he involved in our break up? “Oh… okay.” I said, a little unsure now.
James was about to speak but something stopped him and he quirked his head to the side. “Rebecca, is your hair starting to curl?”
"What?” I frantically felt my hair, and low and behold a springy curl was beginning to form. I had to get out of here. I stood up. “Yeah, it’s a new beauty spell I’m trying. What were you saying? You should probably make it fast though, it’s almost curfew.” I threw out wildly. Not the best excuse but I’m desperate.
James was still staring at me, confused when another voice echoed from the first room. “James? Hello?”
James’ head whipped towards the sound. “Rebecca?” He called out.
A few moments later Rebecca crawled onto the balcony. “What are you doing up here? You know I can’t climb to save my-“ Rebecca’s voice died almost immediately upon seeing me.
"Who is this?” She asked. She didn’t sound nearly as freaked out as I thought she would.
"That’s what I’m trying to figure out, too.” James turned back to me.
"This is awkward.” I said, rubbing my neck.
Realization had just dawned on James’ face when I decided to run. I jumped with skill from bookshelf to bookshelf, but unfortunately so did James. When I was nearly at the balcony, my foot slipped and I stumbled. James took advantage of my mistake and grabbed my foot. I yanked it free and kept running. I was the first one to the balcony, swinging over the ledge with such skill that only ten years of hockey could give me. I sprinted through the third room, which was pretty much just a hall with bookshelves shoved up against the walls.
I was able to get some decent headway as James was swinging himself onto the balcony. He caught up fast, but not before I darted out of the room and down the hallway. James burst through the hidden door right as I turned the corner, my now blonde hair streaming behind me. I could hear him calling my name, but I didn’t look back.
