“Don't go, please, not yet anyway,” she pleaded, her voice trembling beneath her. He stared into her brown eyes as he reached for her hand. Her soft hands that were trembling at his touch.

“I have to go, time ceases to stop just because we will it so,” he told her, his long shaggy red hair falling in front of his face. She reached up to move it back and she couldn't stop the tear that rolled slowly down her pale cheek. They were sitting in a clearing, both knelt on the soft grass facing each other. It should have been a happy time, the moments they spent together alone were rare and far between but this moment was anything but happy. Godric was leaving, for what Rowena didn't know but she knew that it would be dangerous and she couldn't help but be worried. He had told her a thousand times she needn't worry, he was a skilled fighter but she couldn't help it.

“Please, just wait until the sun has risen, the danger is less in the dark,” she pleaded, her tone couldn't mask how desperate she sounded but at this point she didn't care. She had been trying to persuade him not to go for weeks now, even months but to no avail.

“The quicker I leave, the quicker I can return. Will you wait, if I am gone for summer and winter?” She managed a smile then, she could hardly believe he thought he had to ask. They had been seeing each other in secret for close to two years now and she couldn't imagine life without him.

“Nothing but death could stop me waiting. My heart belongs to you and only you,” she told him as he stood up and she quickly rose to her feet as well, almost stumbling in her haste. The sun was rising behind her and she could feel the first rays of heat reflecting off her back and hair. It was times like this she wished her hair wasn't black, wasn't so long.

“Fear not my love, dry your eyes for I shall return someday. Take this,” Godric reached for her hand and pulled it to his lips before pressing something into it. He took one last look at his beloved before turning on the spot and disaparating out of the clearing. As she watched him go, she unclenched her hand and inside was his plain gold ring, decorated with red.

Then the rain fell.

Years had past and Rowena had felt every minute of them. She had waited a year, then another year and with each passing month she became more and more depressed. The hope inside of her had been fading until now it was gone, a mere memory of what could have been, what things had been like. The clearing had been her only escape, she would sit there with her long black hair flowing down her back. Her dress fanned out around her and she would remember, all the while staring at his ring; the ring she had placed on a chain around her neck and never removed. It was the only thing she had left of him, the only item that proved he was real and not just a figment of her imagination. As the years had passed she spent longer in the clearing until one day she never left. She had cut off all contact with the outside world and a couple of well placed spells had ensured she was comfortable in the clearing, or her home as she now thought of it.

Until one day things changed.

That day had started out like any other, Rowena had been by herself in the clearing, reading one of the books she had with her. She was too engrossed in the book to hear the faint crack that she would have recognised as the sound of someone disaparating and then the crunching of the forest floor as someone made her way towards her. It wasn't until the air surrounding the clearing started to ripple did she look up; someone had set off the intruder alarm. Graciously she got to her feet and drew her wand, she wasn't good at fighting but hopefully it wouldn't come to that. A shadow appeared on the floor and Rowena adjusted her position so she could she who was coming before they saw her. A boot stepped into the clearing, a dirty boot that looked as though it had once been gold. It triggered a memory off in Rowena's mind but she couldn't quite place it, it just looked familiar. Another boot joined the first, this one just as messy and as her eyes moved upwards she couldn't help the gasp that escaped her lips.

“Hello?” The person called out and Rowena could feel her eyes filling with tears, how long had it been since she had heard that voice.

“Godric?” She called out as she stood up and faced him, the tears not yet falling. Neither of them spoke, each was momentarily stunned and words failed them. They had been waiting for this day for so many years and each was afraid that they would ruin it by speaking. Taking a hesitant step forward Rowena opened her mouth to speak but words failed her. Godric was, here. She couldn't believe it and apart from being covered in a layer of dirt and some extra scars he hadn't changed a bit.

“I told you I'd be back,” he half smiled at her and she took that as an invite to rush forward before landing in his arms.

“It's been so long but I said I would wait and I have,” she told him the tears now falling freely. He wrapped his arms around her and just held her, he had missed her. “I have your ring,” she told him and she leaned her head back to remove the chain but he stopped her. His hand felt warm against hers.

“Keep it, it suits you more then it ever did me,” he told her and she smiled, meeting his gaze as the chain fell back down onto her chest. Letting go of him, she sat back down on the grass and he followed, pulling her closer.

“You were gone for so long?” The words suggested a statement but her tone suggested a question.

“I was trapped, unable to leave but it was you I thought of with every passing minute. Nothing could have stopped me,” he stroked her hair and she closed her eyes, there fingers entwined with one another.

“Is the next time so far away? Will it be for as long?” She whispered, her voice almost breaking but he shook his head.

“Forever I am here, only you can send me away,” he told her and she smiled as she realised what that meant. No more worrying, no more waiting; it would just be them.

“Never,” she breathed and they said no more falling into a peaceful slumber.

It was only when a bird song echoed throughout the clearing that Rowena woke and at first she didn't recall any of the night before but as she felt her fingers locked with another’s it all came flooding back and she smiled. He was hers, and they could finally start living. Careful not to wake him she stared up at the sky and watched as the blue night sky began to disappear as the red sunset rose. The two colours, side-by-side representing the end of one thing but the beginning of another, more beautiful thing and Rowena couldn't remember a more enchanting sight.
