Chapter 14 : My Slytherin Side
| ||Rating: Mature||Chapter Reviews: 4|
Background: Font color:
It was long past dinner and I was waiting in the common room for a missing Cal. Where could he be? He was here all holiday, it’s not like he could have gotten lost. Okay, yes I know I got lost on the way to transfiguration that one day and didn’t find my way back until dinnertime, but that was different. I was in first year.
There was a loud bang and the sound of running footsteps up the tunnel. I sat up in my beyond plush seat. “Cal?” I called.
He leapt into common room, dancing, twirling, and finally ending in an unsteady pirouette. “Oh, Merlin! That was awful!” I complained loudly. “A professional dancer should never have to see something as sad as that. Just claw my eyes out now!”
Cal snorted, “You’re hardly professional.”
I stuck out my tongue. “So why were you AWOL, Cal? Where have you been?”
Cal beamed at me and stood up straighter, “You may now bow down at my feet.”
I shook my head, “No, thanks.”
Cal sighed. “That’s too bad. I guess I won’t put your name on our finished polyjuice potion.”
"What? You finished it?” But that means... “My hair is saved!” I cried out, falling to my knees. “Gone are the days of a tangled frizzy mess taking residence on my head!” I crawled over to Cal and grabbed his knees. “You are my hero,m Mr. Cal Heith!”
Cal nodded. “This is true.” He helped me stand up. “But I have better news!”
"We have no more potions lessons for the rest of the year?” I asked hopefully.
"No, stop interrupting me!” Cal said annoyed. Well, excuse me Mr. Grumpy Pants. “So this whole holiday I was working on the potion, right? Guess who was helping me?” I only stared at him. “Why aren’t you guessing?” He asked.
"Oh, I’m sorry. Am I allowed to talk now your highness?” I asked sarcastically.
Cal huffed in irritation, “I’m not gonna tell you what happened if you keep being a smart arse.”
I gave an irritated huff of my own, “Fine. Was it-“
"Wrong!” Cal cut across excitedly.
"You didn’t even let me-“
"Sh! Let me finish!” Cal cut across again.
I am about five seconds away from bitch slapping him.
“Okay,” Cal said with a stupid grin on his face. “It was Rebecca!”
I was about to gasp in shock but Cal plowed on. “She was helping me work on it all break, and we spent a lot of time together.” Cal lowered his head a little and shot me an if-you-know-what-I-mean look.
"Did you two kiss?” I asked eagerly.
Cal scoffed, “No she has a boyfriend. Rebecca isn’t that kind of girl. But she kept dropping hints that they were going to break up. But I mean I knew that, everyone has been talking about it for weeks.”
My jaw hit the floor, “How are you more in the loop than me?”
"Because I’m friendly,” Cal answered simply.
"I’m friendly, too!” I argued back.
"Beth you hate almost everyone in this house.” Cal said matter of factly.
I snorted, “Oh, yeah. “
"Do you want me to finish my story and get to the part involving you or not?” Cal asked impatiently.
"Fine, fine. What happened next?”
"Well, she’s also told me that she thinks James still fancies the pants off of you.”
I gave a semi-shrug. “I figured as much.”
Cal’s smile fell into a look of question, “Why?”
I sighed, “Over the holiday, Al and Erik locked me into a room with James and we kinda, sorta, almost kissed.”
Now it was Cal’s jaws turn to hit the floor. “You what?”
"It’s okay because I smacked him in the face!” I added hastily.
Cal huffed, “I hope you at least apologized.”
I held up my hands, “Of course mum.”
Cal’s grin returned. “So what are you gonna do?”
"Oh, come on! You’re Bethany Heart! What happened to body checking... head checking and whatever else kind of checking there is?”
"Head checking Cal? Really?”
Cal shrugged, “I don’t follow hockey.”
I rolled my eyes, “I can’t do anything about it Cal. If it’s meant to be it’ll happen.”
Cal stared at me in silence. “You’re never this patient.”
"Well, I’m trying to turn over a new leaf.” I know I’m mature right? My mum would be proud.
Cal shook his head, a smirk on his face. “But it’s gotta be eating you up, not doing anything.
I pursed my lips, “Don’t tempt me Cal.”
"Don’t you think things would go along much faster and much smoother if you took them into your own hands.”
"My… previous track record… would suggest… no.” Yeah, Cal was definitely asking for a smack in the face.
Cal raised an eyebrow, “Beth?”
I let out a scream of frustration. “Okay, yes! I do want to take things into my own hands! Yes, I am getting impatient!”
"What are you going to do?” Cal yelled in an attempt to get me pumped.
I put a finger on my chin in thought and began to pace back and forth. “What I really wanna figure out is why James dated Rebecca in the first place. But how can I get him to spill the beans?”
Cal shrugged. “Ask him?”
I laughed and placed a hand on Cal’s shoulder. “Oh, silly, innocent, precious, little Cal. That’s not how I work.”
I turned away from him and back to my pacing. “He might not tell me, but he would probably tell Rebecca.” Cal raised his hand. “The court recognizes council member Heith.” I pointed to him.
"Rebecca told me that she and James were gonna have a talk this Friday. Maybe you can eaves drop?”
"Nice idea but we can do better!” I said. “What if I get caught? What do I say? No, we need to one up this plan.” I stopped and quirked my head to the side, a slight smirk playing at my lips. “Cal, you said our polyjuice potion was finished correct?”
"Yeah.” Cal said a bit unsurely.
"And it was done correctly?”
Cal nodded triumphantly. “Got the A okay by Slughorn himself… why?”
"I’m thinking I dip into our finished product and show up as Rebecca.”
"Whoa, Beth this is mental! Forget Gryffindor or Hufflepuff you should by in Slytherin.”
I grinned, “You flatter me, sir.”
Cal shook his head. “What I don’t get is how you can think of something as diabolical as this, but still can’t come up with plans of revenge.”
I opened and closed my mouth for a bit. “Shut up!” Smooth, brain. “Now, can you give me some of Rebecca’s hair?” I held out my hand expectantly.
Cal looked at it confused, “What?”
"I need you to give me some of Rebecca’s hair so I can turn into her!”
Cal snorted, “Do you think I have a collection of her hair or something? I don’t care who you are, that’s extremely creepy. “
I scoffed, “Yeah, I know right.” Note to self, dispose of my collection of James’ hair. “Well how else are we gonna do it?”
"You live down the hall from her.” Call pointed out.
"And you’re secretly watching her sleep,” I agued back.
Cal pointed at me. “Touché.”
"Whatever, let’s just go to bed and see what we can come up with tomorrow.” Cal and I parted ways and I went to my dorm room. When I got there, everyone else was asleep. I started to get ready for bed, still thinking of my devious, Slytherin like plan when there was a soft knock on the door.
Rebecca popped her head in. “Hey, I see you’re still awake.”
Well, speak of the devil! “Yeah, do you need something?”
Rebecca opened the door all the way and took a step inside the cozy burrow like room. “I was just wondering if we could talk.”
I frowned slightly, “Sure, what’s wrong.”
She took a seat on my bed and sighed. “It’s James. I’m almost positive we’re going to break up, but I’m not sure if I should try and fix it or not.”
"No.” I said automatically. Rebecca frowned. “Oh, what I meant was… uh… if you’re having these feelings and you don’t know if it’s working, why keep trying?” Not really, I just don’t want you anywhere near him. I love Rebecca, I do. She’s a sweet girl and my friend. But she’s also with the love of my life.
Rebecca nodded slowly, “I guess you’re right.” She spotted the brush in my hand. “Do you think you can brush my hair? I didn’t have time tonight, I was up late studying.”
I shrugged, “Sure, why not.” I crawled onto the bed behind her and began to brush out her long russet colored hair.
"Can I ask you something else?” She asked as she pulled up her knees.
"Sure!” I separated one particularly nasty strand from the rest and began to brush with particular vigor.
"Why did you and James break up in the first place? He said you were growing apart, but from what I could tell you two looked like peas in a pod.”
I froze for an instant before brushing through Rebecca’s hair one last time. “Yeah, you’re going to have to take that up with James. I’m not quite sure what happened either.”
Rebecca turned to face me, running her fingers through her hair. “I may just do that. We’re going to have a talk this Friday.” She pulled out a few loose hairs and dropped them on the ground. “Eh, I’m shedding.”
Annoyance bubbled inside me. I hated when people just dropped their hair on the ground. At least have the decency to throw it away. I mean what kind of person- wait a minute! My eyes widened and I zeroed in on those few brown strands siting on the floor. I also became hyper aware of the brush sitting in my hand, filled with beautiful, beautiful strands of hair. Okay… that was a bit creepy.
Rebecca sighed, “Anyway, better get some sleep.” She hopped off the bed. “Got N.E.W.T’s in a few weeks.” She left the room.
I grabbed the strands of hair off the floor and pulled them out of the brush, placing them into a pile on my bed. My precious… my precious. I do believe this new Slytherin side and I are going to get along swimmingly.
I am SO sorry for the wait! There is litterally a list of excuseses but I won't bother you with it. But maybe with the holidays coming up soon I can update more. Gosh.. I hope I didn't just jinx that.
