Chapter 2 : No really, what house am I in?
Rating: MatureChapter Reviews: 1

Background:   Font color:

A/N:  Okay, so for this one, when someone is saying something and signing at the same time, I'm going to write, "S&S". I just wanted to tell you so you weren't confused and so I don't have to type, "said and signed" all the time.

We followed Professor McGonagall into an enormous hall that had a ceiling that was made to look like it was nighttime. The hall was full of tons of people, all sitting at four tables parallel to each other. Ghosts were mixed in and among them, sticking out like sore thumbs. There was also another table at the front that was full of teachers.

Students were turning to get a look at all of us as we passed them.

Professor McGonagall led us in front of the teacher's table where there was a stool. On top of that stool was a pointed wizard's hat. The hat was patched and frayed and very dirty.

What do we have to do? I wondered as we crowded around the hat.

Then the brim of the hat opened up and looked like it was moving. Harry immediately started signing for Jem and I so that we could understand what was going on.

Basically, the hat told us about the four houses and how he'll see everything in our heads when we wear him, and how we shouldn't be afraid 'cause he's a thinking cap.

When it was done, Professor McGonagall called out, "Abbot, Hannah!"

A girl with blonde pigtails walked up, sat down, and put the hat on. There was a pause, and the hat spoke again.

Harry told Jem and I that it had sorted her into Hufflepuff. I watched her as she went and sat at a table that was cheering and clapping.

The sorting went on and on. We saw Malfoy get sorted into Slytherin, and Hermione got sorted into Gryffindor.

Then I saw Professor McGonagall say, "Potter, Harry!"

I turned and saw the whole hall had burst into speech, talking amongst themselves. I watched as Harry sat down on the stool and the professor put the hat on his head. For some reason, it seemed to take his longer than the others, but then the hat yelled out a name- by this time I could tell what the hat said- Gryffindor!

I saw Harry grin and go sit at a table that was cheering uproariously.

"Potter, Hollie!" I saw Professor McGonagall call out. Jem squeezed my hand before I walked up to the stool.

I sat down and the hat fell onto my head. I waited, but nothing happened. I waited some more.

Then the hat was whipped off my head and Professor McGonogall motioned for me to get down.

"What house am I an?" I asked, standing up.

The professor smiled at me kindly and pointed to the Gryffindor table. I nodded and walked down the steps while everyone in the hall stared at me, nobody applauding except for Harry and Ron and a few other redheads.

I sat down in between Harry and one of Ron's twin brothers. The other twin was across from me, next to Hermione.

I watched as Professor McGonogall called, "Spinnet, James!"

I crossed my fingers as Jem stepped up to the stool and put on the hat. After a minute, I saw the hat yell, "Gryffindor!"

I clapped my hands and waved Jem over as he took the hat off. He grinned and came to our table, sitting in between Hermione and Ron's brother.

Then we watched as Ron was sorted into Gryffindor also. Dumbledore said some strange words and then food appeared in front of us magically.

Jem and I grinned at each other across the table and we all piled food onto our plates.

I turned to the twin next to me. "You're George, right?"

He smiled. "Yep. I am."

"And you're Fred?" I asked the boy sitting next to Jem.

"How can you tell us apart?" Fred asked, grinning crookedly.

I shrugged. "When you're deaf," I S&S, "you tend to become really good at looking at things and noticing differences."

Jem signed something quickly and I laughed.

"What did he say?" Hermione asked curiously.

I tried to stop laughing. "He said that our eyesight is so good that we can spot shoes on sale and assholes from a mile away."

I shook my head, grinning, and kicked Jem under the table as he laughed at his own joke.

Harry tapped me and pointed to a boy on the other side of Fred.

"Seamus, right?" I asked him.

He nodded. "So you couldn't hear what the hat was saying?"

I shook my head. "I can't hear people talk let alone an old hat." I S&S.

Jem nodded and pointed at himself, showing that he couldn't hear the hat either.

"How are you guys going to be able to follow in classes?" Hermione asked me.

I signed it to Jem, then S&S, "We can read lips, so that should work for now." I shrugged. "We can't have interpreters follow us everywhere. It's a pain in the ass."

Jem nodded in agreement and then I saw Harry and everyone but Jem and I stiffen.

"What's wrong?" I asked them.

Then I felt something hit the back of my head and turned around to see that Malfoy and his gang were laughing and making faces at me, yelling. They were too far away for me to understand what they were saying, but I got the gist.

I rolled my eyes and turned back around as my friends stared at me.

Harry tapped me on the shoulder. "You okay?" He S&S.

"Seriously? You think I'm gonna let an idiot like him get to me?" I signed back. "Please, give me some credit."

Harry didn't seem fully convinced, but he let it rest. I looked down at my plate and found I wasn't very hungry anymore.

Jem knew what was going on and wasn't eating much anymore either. Hermione started talking to Ron's oldest brother at Hogwarts, Percy, and Harry was talking to Ron.

Then George tapped me. "Hey Hollie, what is the sign for friend?" he asked.

I held up my hands and wrapped my index fingers around each other like a knot. "This is how you say friends." I said as Fred, Seamus, Neville and Dean watched.

"Do you want to be-" George then made the sign for friends.

I grinned. "That would be great, George."

George grinned back. "Do you like Quidditch?" he asked me then.

I shrugged. "Never seen it before. I don't even know what it is."

George put a hand to his heart. "Hollie, you're killing me."

I grinned. "So what is it?"

George started explaining me the rules when everyone turned to the front.

I looked over, a little confused, but then I saw Dumbledore standing up and I knew that he was making a speech. I saw him say that the forest is forbidden to all students. He also said that the third-floor corridor on the right was off limits unless you wanted to die a painful death.

I saw Harry laugh, but I watched George and Fred, who looked surprised.

"Is he serious?" I know Fred said something, but I couldn't read his lips because he was turned away, craning his neck to get a better look at Dumbledore.

I put my head in my hands and stayed that way until Harry tapped me.

"We're singing." he signed.

I shook my head and put my head back in my hands.

I felt a light kick under the table and looked up at Jem.

"You OK?" he signed.

I shrugged. "Just realizing how hard this is gonna be. It's not our school at all."

Jem nodded in agreement.

Then everyone started getting up. We all stood up and followed Ron's brother Percy out of the Hall.

Harry tapped me on the shoulder. "The password is Caput Draconis." he said clearly.

I nodded and signed it to Jem. We all reached a portrait on the wall of a lady who was rather large. Percy spoke to her and the portrait swung outward to reveal a large room with a fireplace and tables and chairs.

Percy turned and I saw him say, "Girls are on the left, boys on the right. You all are at the very top. Now I suggest you get to bed. You've got a big day tomorrow."

I rolled my eyes. Jem grinned and gave me a hug before going to the boys' staircase.

Harry hugged me also, signing, "I love you" before heading upstairs.

I walked up the girls' staircase while yawning until I reached the very top. Inside were five four-poster beds.

I went and sat one. I yawned again and then jumped when someone touched my back.

I stood up and turned quickly to see a girl with wavy brown hair. "Lavender, right?" I asked shakily.

The girl nodded."Yeah, um, you're on my bed."

I looked down and saw a trunk that wasn't mine and gasped.

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I didn't think! God, I'm so stupid."

Lavender held up her hands. "No, no, you're fine. I was telling you, but I don't know if you heard me-"

I walked over to the bed with my trunk on it, saying, "I can't hear you. I'm deaf."

I saw Lavender's eyes widen. "God, I'm sorry!" she said.

I shook my head. "It's fine. You didn't know."

Lavender nodded and we both got ready for bed as Hermione and two other girls also got ready. I climbed in my bed and fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

I woke up the next morning and started getting ready. I was brushing my hair when I was tapped on my shoulder. I turned to see one of the other girls from my room. I smiled.

"Hi," the girl said, waving. "I-my name is Courtney McKinnon." I could tell that she was shouting.

"I'm deaf, Courtney. Yelling won't make me hear you."

Courtney held up her hands. "I'm sorry. What's the sign for I'm sorry?"

I took my right hand in a fist and rubbed it in a circular motion against my chest.

Courtney mimicked me. "I'm sorry, Hollie. I just wanted to introduce myself."

I smiled. "It's nice to meeet you." I S&S.

Courtney mimicked my hand motions again. "Right back at you."

I grinned and grabbed my bag, putting my brush down.

Hermione came over then. "Do you guys want to go to breakfast now?" she asked, looking at me so I could read her lips.

I shrugged. "Sure. Let's go."

We all walked out of our room and downstairs to the common room. I spotted Jem and waved him over. I didn't see Harry or Ron anywhere.

"Good morning!" I signed to Jem.
He grinned. "Excited?" he signed.

"Just a little bit." I signed, grinning.

Then I realized Courtney and Hermione were just standing there. "Oh, this is Jem. Jem, this is Courtney. And you remember Hermione from yesterday." I S&S.

"Good morning." Hermione said, waving.

Courtney was watching my hands. "I'm sorry, Hollie, but what was the sign you did for Jem's name?" she asked curiously.

I smiled and put my right hand in the letter j. Then I brought it back to the left side of my chest a few times. "It's the sign for joy. Because he's always joyful even when nobody else is." I S&S.

"Do you want to go to breakfast with us, Jem?" Courtney asked, using the sign for Jem.

He grinned and nodded.

"Let's go." I said, pointing to the portrait hole.

We all climbed out and started walking down the hallway.

"Is this the way we're supposed to be going?" I S&S as we walked.

Courtney and Jem shrugged, but Hermione nodded. "Yes. I read Hogwarts: a History over the summer and I know exactly where to go to get to classes and everything."

"I'm sticking with you!" I S&S, laughing.

Jem smiled as Courtney and Hermione laughed as we walked down a marble staricase. Then we crossed the main hallway and entered through the big doorway into the Great Hall with the four tables.

We all walked over to the Gryffindor table and sat down next to Harry, Ron, Fred, George, Seamus, Dean, and a few other people I didn't know.

I grabbed some pumpkin juice after waving across the table at Harry, who looked really tired. Then I was tapped on the shoulder and turned to see Professor McGonogall.

"Er...good morning, Professor." I said, wondering what was wrong.

"Ms. Potter, I wish to speak with you about your schedule." Professor began, moving her lips so that I could see. "I know that you speak, but I still wasn't sure if you wanted to take classes with your classmates."

I tilted my head, confused. "What do you mean?"

"Well, for instance, Mr.Spinnet has opted to take upper-level nonverbal classes."

I turned to look at Jem. "Seriously? You can't even try?" I signed, feeling hurt.

Hermione looked jealous of Jem and he started to explain, but I turned back to Professor McGonogall. "Thanks, Professor, but I can follow along just fine in normal first-year classes."

She nodded. "Then I shall see you in Transfiguration this afternoon. Have a good morning." Professor McGonogall turned and swept away.

I went back to my breakfast, but wasn't very hungry anymore. I felt a tap on my shoulder and looked up. It was Hermione.

"We should go so that we're not late for Potions. It's our first class today."

I forced a smile and nodded. "Okay."

I grabbed my bag and stood up.

Jem put a hand on my arm to stop me, but I jerked away from him. I wasn't sure why this was making me so upset. I mean, he's never spoken much before, so why should he start now?

I tried to shake it off as Courtney, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Seamus, Dean and I all walked to class with Hermione leading the way so we wouldn't get lost.

They were all talking, but I didn't even try to work my way into the conversation and just walked with them to class.

When we got there, we all filed in to a row of seats. I saw Slytherins behind us, including Malfoy, and rolled my eyes at Courtney.

She shook her head and shrugged as we sat down.

I got out parchment, set it on my desk, and then reached back down to the bottom of my bag for my quill. Hard as I tried, I couldn't find it. Then my fingers brushed against it and I pulled it out of the depths of my bag and turned to the front of the room.

That was when I realized that Snape was right in front of my desk, yelling.
