I continued screaming, I just couldn't stop. Even when I heard footsteps coming up behind me even when I heard people gasp and felt someone wrap their arms around me, trying to soothe me.
I screamed and stared at Pansy's hanging body. Her eyes rolled back in her head. I couldn't believe it.
"Please stop screaming." The person who was holding whispered.
I'm not sure why, but I stopped screaming like they asked. I turned to face the person. I was shocked in finding out it was Draco.
I hugged him, looking over his shoulder and saw Granger, Potter and Longbottom looking from Pansy's body to me. Did they think I killed her or something?
"I-I d-didn't..." I couldn't finish my sentence. I choked on my words.
"Someone should get Bennett." Draco said.
"Ginny already went." Potter said blankly.
A few moment later, Bennett and Ginny arrived. Bennett, like the others, looked at me and then at Pansy's body.
"Ms. Hartley, what have you done?"
"Tell me what happened again." Bennett said.
"I was on my way back to my common room when I ran into Pansy. She said she knew who the killer was, but she couldn't tell me there, so she told me to meet her on the seventh floor at 7."
"And at what time did that happen?" He asked.
"Around six." I answered.
"What did you do for that hour?"
"I went to the common rroom and waited until about 6:55. You can ask any of the Hufflepuffs that were there." I said.
"And upon arriving on the seventh floor...?"
"She was already dead." I whispered. "All I could do was scream. The others showed up right away. I think she told everyone to come to the seventh floor. She was going to tell us all."
"And that's it?" He asked. "You didn't see anything suspicious?"
I shook my head. "Nothing."
Bennett sighed. "Well then I guess you're free to go Ms. Hartley."
I got up. "And just you know, I'm willing to help with your little investigation." He said.
I nodded before walking out. Everyone was out there.
"What happened?" Longbottom asked.
I shrugged. "I just told him what happened."
"The killer knew that Pansy was going to tell us who they were. They killed her because of it." Granger said.
"How did they know though?" I asked. "And how did they manage to get to her?"
No one seemed to have the answer. "And they had to have been there minutes before I was too." I said.
"Same with us. I think after she saw you, she came to us. The killer got her between that time and the time that you showed up." Potter said.
"I told you this was bad news." Draco said to me.
"The killer would have came after us eventually anyways." I said. "If anything, this just sped things up."
"Either way, now the killer is coming after us now. I don't want any part in this."
"You don't have a choice, Draco." I said. "Now that the killer is coming after us, we have to stick together. It's too much of a risk to be alone."
Draco nodded, realizing that I was right. "Well then we need to figure this shit out. I'm not going down the way Pansy did."
"We're going to find out who it is. That's a promise." I said.
The days passed, nothing happened. No more killings, no one claimed to know who the killer was. Everywhere I went, people were staring at me. It had gotten around that I had found Pansy dead. Some people think I actually did it.
Me and the others weren't pretending like nothing changed anymore. We had decided that since the killer clearly knew what was going on with us anyways. Bennett was helping us out too. He thinks we have a better chance at finding the killer than he did. I'm not sure why though.
"Draco, did you ever see anyone when you went down to the kitchens to get food?" I asked.
It was just me and Draco sitting near the Black Lake. We had been spending a considerable amount of time together since starting the investigation. I'd be lying if said I didn't enjoy it a bit.
Draco shrugged. "There were still a few people out when Blaise and I went down. It wasn't past curfew yet, so..."
I sighed. "Damn it. I thought maybe you saw someone who could have something to do with Ron's murder."
"Is that all you think about lately?" He asked.
I nodded. "Pretty much. I mean, I'm living in fear that Bennett will decide I most likely killed Ron and stop the investigation and send me to Azkaban."
"Really?" He asked surprised. "You don't seem scared."
"Well, I have a reputation to uphold, I'm not supposed to act scared. I still have to be a badass." I said.
"You're not a badass." Draco said. "I'm a badass. You're a rebel."
I looked at him amused. "Oh? And suddenly you know me, do you?"
"Of course. I know everything." He smirked. I grinned.
"Oh yeah? What's my favorite color?" I challenged.
"Green. But not any green you like dark, deep green. Kind of like an emerald green." He looked at me so intensely, it gave me chills.
I stared at him. "How the hell do you know that?"
"I know everything." He repeated confidently.
"Okay, so who killed Ron?" I asked raising my eyebrows, knowing I had stumped him.
"Fuck you, Hartley." He said before laughing.
"No, fuck you for not knowing who killed Ron." I giggled. The craziest thing suddenly ran through my mind. I wouldn't mind fucking Draco...
I was walking down the hall. It was the longest hall I had ever walked down. It just kept going on forever. Like there was no end.
Suddenly I heard footsteps behind me. But everytime I turned around no one was there. I heard the footsteps getting closer. I started running. But it was the hallway wouldn't end. It was as though I was running in place.
A cold icy hand touched my shoulder. I turned around and there stood Ron. Much paler than usual and blood dripping down his head where he had been hit.
"Ron?" I said in disbelief.
"Skyler." He said blankly.
"You're dead." I pointed out. He nodded.
"Yes I am."
"Do you know who killed you?" I asked immediately. Again he nodded. "Can you tell me so we cam end this investigation?" He shook his head.
"I can't tell you who." He whispered.
"Why not?" I asked.
"I cant tell you who." He repeated.
"Can you at least point me in the right direction? Is it someone I know? Someone you know? Someone close to you?"
"Someone unexpected." He said, his voice barely above a whisper. He started to back away from me.
"No, wait." I protested. "There has to be more."
"Be careful, Skyler. I don't want you to end up like me." He said, his voice sounding so far away.
"Ron, wait!" I pleaded. But then he was gone.
I shot up with sweat dripping from my forehead. I was breathing heavily. It was just a dream. But it had felt so real. What if part of it was? What if Ron really had come to warn me?
"Someone unexpected." Those words rang in my ear. He had looked so sad when he said it. But then again, he was dead. I would be sad too I suppose. But this didn't help me at all.
Later that day I sat in the library. I had been replaying my dream over in my head, just in case I missed something. Just in case there was a clue to who the killer was.
I had told the others, in hope that Ron had visited them in their dreams too, but he hadn't. Why me? Was it because the whole thing was meant to be pinned on me?
Suddenly Neville sat down next to me, startling me out of my thoughts. It looked like he had news.
"What is it?" I asked quietly. "Did you figure something else out?"
He merely pushed a piece a paper over to me and then walked away, looking a tad nervous. I looked around before opening the paper.
Meet me on the third floor tonight at 9:00. We need to talk
So he did know something. I checked my watch. 7:12. Tons of time to kill. What was I going to do?
"Hartley, surprised to see you here." Draco's voice said as he sat down.
"Surprised to see you too, Malfoy." I said, grinning.
"What was that whole thing with Longbottom about?" He asked.
"He just wants me to meet him at nine." I shrugged. "No idea why."
"I think he fancies you, personally." Draco laughed slightly.
"He's not my type at all." I said, grimacing slightly. "And honestly I don't think I'm his."
"You're practically everyone's type." He stated. I raised my eyebrows.
"And what's that supposed to mean?" I asked.
"It means different kinds of guys might find you attractive." He said like it was no big deal.
"Well, I wasn't aware of that." I said.
"That's because you don't know everything like I do." He winked. Me heart was beating faster. Draco Malfoy just winked at me. Many times I had seen him wink at other girls, but never at me. But now he had.
I didn't expect it to feel like that. "Something wrong?" He asked.
I shook my head. "Nope, just that you're wrong and you don't know everything." I laughed.
Time seemed to fly and before I knew it, I was leaving Draco and going to meet Neville. I was wondering if he really did fancy me. That would be awkward.
I turned the corner and gasped. Neville was on the floor on his back and someone dressed in all black stood over him. The killer. They had their hood up and I couldn't see their face. But when they heard me, they reached into their pocket and threw something down. Suddenly everything went black.
A/N: I am having tons of fun writing this. Mostly cause I know the killer is! Any ideas? Thanks for reading. :)
