“Hey Athena, do you want to share this carriage with us?” Bradley asked, holding the door open as I climbed in.

“Do you guys mind?” I noticed she was eyeing me.

“Of course not.” Smiling, I offered my hand to her, and helped her into our carriage. I knew that I should at least try to be nice to her, after all we were going to be sharing a dormitory for the rest of the year. Although, I’m not exactly one to give people second chances. So if she does anything, let’s just say we won’t be best friends.

When we were finally all in, James pulled the door shut. “So do any of you play quidditch?” Athena asked.

“Yeah, I play beater with Freddie here on the Gryffindor quidditch team, and Aspen, James and Louis are our chasers.” Bradley told her.

“Was. I was your chaser. I suppose you’ll have to find someone else now that I’m starting my treatment and everything.” The carriage got uncomfortably quiet after that.

Athena finally broke the silence, “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay, you have to give up some things when you’re fighting for your life and all.”

She smiled, “Well, if it means anything, I think you’re really brave for everything you’re going through.”

“Thanks Athena.”

“So, do you play quidditch, Athena?” Danny asked.

“Yeah, quodpot is more popular in America, but Salem had a team, I played chaser and sometimes seeker if our seeker was sick or whatever.”

“You should totally try out to take my spot on the team, Gryffindor needs to win the quidditch cup this year and were not losing just because my stupid cancer back.” James smiled and wrapped his arm around me.

He kissed me on the forehead, “That’s my girl.”

“I swear, you two care more about bloody quidditch than you do your own freaking lives.” Dom shook her head, “Bloody crazy, both of you are.”

“Love you too Dom!” She stuck her tongue out at me. Oh well.

“So what do you all do at Hogwarts besides studying and everything?” Athena asked as she tucked a piece of her golden hair behind her ear.

“Well, it’s second term in Newt year, so we won’t do much besides class, studying, eating, sleeping and breathing.” Ally told her, “But we go to the village every two months or so, and when it gets hot we go down to the lake and the beach. Sometimes we have snow ball fights on the ground, and of course quidditch matches. Although, I am afraid we will be studying a lot.”

Athena frowned, “That sucks. In America we have exams that are like Newts, but they’re not as big of a deal, we had our huge exams last year. So I get to do it all over again, yay!” I smiled at her sarcasm. I could like this girl.

“We’re here.” Bradley announced as our carriage screeched to a stop. No shit, sherlock.

“Piggy back ride?” I put on my most innocent smile and batted my eyelashes at James.

“Fine, only cause I love you.”

“Love you too!” I pecked his cheek and climbed onto his back. He just laughed and ran across the courtyard, attempting to escape the huge downpour of rain. It didn’t really work, seeing as we walked into the great hall soaking wet. We really should start using ‘impervius’ in these situations. Yet, no, were all stupid as bat shit.

“Accio James Potter’s towel.” James said, flicking his wand. It took about thirty-seconds, but soon James was giving his towel to me to dry my myself. Not that it helped much because I was basically soaked to the bone, but it was a nice gesture.

Our carriage was one of the first to reach the castle, so it was a while before everyone was sitting down. “Settle down everyone!” Professor Longbottom called out, “Please, settle down. Well, welcome back to Hogwarts everyone. I hope you all enjoyed your holiday. I am pleased to announce that we have two new students joining us from Salem Witches’ Institute in America. Athena Singleton is in the Gryffindor house, while Erin Rockridge is in Hufflepuff house. I’m sure you will all welcome them kindly and be sure to warn them about Peeves.” We all grinned at that. Ally’s dad really is an awesome headmaster. “I’m sure you’re starving because none of you had any candy on the train,” I smiled at his sarcasm, “So go ahead and dig in.”

Food appeared on the glistening golden plates, I practically knocked over two first years trying to get a grilled cheese. “Aspen, stop scaring the youngins!” Louis exclaimed.

“Fuck off Louis, I do what I want!” I told him as I chewed my mouthwatering, warm, cheesy, flakey, unbelievably wonderful grilled cheese.

“You are disgusting, Aspen Powells.”

“Aw, thank you Louie!” I kissed him on the cheek and he laughed.

“Oi, mate, don’t go stealing my fiancée.” James grinned.

“Wait, you two are engaged?” Athena asked.

I nodded, “Yeah. See?” I extended my hand and showed her my ring. It still felt foreign to me, but it was spectacular. I adored gazing at the emerald stone surrounded by glistening diamonds. It made me feel as if I was Cinderella and I was finally going to the ball.

“That thing is freaking gorgeous!” She exclaimed, “Damn James, you have good taste.”

“Actually, the credit goes to my grandfather. He bought the ring and proposed to my grandmother with it, because of her emerald eyes. That’s why I wanted to give it to Aspen, because of her eyes.”

Athena grinned, “You two are so cute.”

“Thanks.”

“So, I got my class schedule. Do you want to see what classes we all have together?” We nodded, “I have potions first with Professor Slughorn. That’s odd, you have to call your teachers ‘Professor’.”

“Yeah, do you not do that in America?” Louis asked.
Athena shook her head, causing strands of her honey colored hair to fly. “No, we just called them ‘Mrs’ or ‘Mr’ so and so.”

“Oh, we did that in my muggle primary school. I just didn’t think they did it in the wizarding community.”

She shrugged, “Maybe it’s an american thing.”

Later on that night, after dinner, all nine of us were walking up to the Gryffindor common room. Athena was amazed by Hogwarts and kept asking how the staircases move-to which I responded, “Magic”-or where the other common rooms where.

“Here we are, Athena, this is the fat lady-”

“Aspen, that’s so rude!” She exclaimed.

I laughed, “No, that’s her name. She is the painting that you give the password too, to get into the common room.”

“Oh, hi. I’m Athena.”

“Is someone going to give me the password or not? I don’t have forever you know.” The fat lady spat.

“Actually, you kind of do.” Ally pointed out.

“Shut it Bambi!” I looked back at Ally, she actually kind of did look like Bambi with her eyes. They were huge circles of brown that you could practically fall into. “Well? Are you going to give me the bleeding password?”

“Order of the phoenix.” I told her, she swung aside and let us in. “Welcome to your common room!”

“Whoa.” Athena whispered. I knew what she meant, I remember the first time I stepped into this room. First of all, I was like ‘Dude, so many places to hide so I can get away with stuff!’. Although, the room really is amazing, the vibrant colors make you feel alive and the fireplace has you feeling secure. I love fireplaces.

“I know.” I grinned to myself.

“This is awesome, my favorite color is red!” Athena cried.

“You’ll fit in here just fine.”

That night, all four of us girls were up in the dorm, listening to music on Ally’s wiz radio. “OOOOOOOHHHHHH MY SOUL IS BEING TORN APART, JUST LIKE A HORCUX’S START!” Dom sang along.

“Dommy, I love you, but please shut up. You sound like a dying hippogriff.” You know what my oh so dearest best friend did. She fucking threw a pillow at me. Bitch.

“I freaking hate you!” I cried out.

She rolled her eyes, “Like hell you do.”

I smiled to myself. Athena had taken the bed next to mine-Roxy’s old one-and was currently hanging up a poster of a person in quidditch robes I recognized at once. She was my hero after all. Basically the best female quidditch player ever. Ariel Singleton, an American seeker nearly three decades ago. Even though she wasn’t a chaser I worshipped the woman!

“I like your taste.” I smiled, pointing at the poster. “I haven’t met a lot of other people that support people who haven’t played for three decades.”

“Well, she is kind of a legend in America. Plus, my mum is Ariel Singleton.”

My jaw dropped, “Are you serious?” She nodded. “That’s awesome.”

“Yeah, it’s the one thing we can always discuss not matter what.”

I nodded, “I wish I had that with my family. They don’t really get quidditch, so I have to basically say that my favorite sport is football otherwise my brothers will slaughter me.”

Athena smiled, “How many brothers do you have?”

“Seven.”

“Wow. I’m an only child, my father died while my mom was pregnant with me and she has always said that he was her one true love so she can’t be with anyone else. I personally think it’s just an excuse. Yet, I’ve never been in love.”

“Yeah, I guess you have to be in love to know. If I ever lost James, I can’t imagine ever loving someone else like I love him. But speaking of boys, any of the guys here caught your eye?”

“Um, well, there was this guy with a blue and bronze tie that I saw at another table. He seemed about our age.”

“So he’s a Ravenclaw. What did he look like?”

Athena thought for a second, “Dirty brown hair that’s straight, grey eyes, tall.”

I tried to picture all the Ravenclaw boys faces. There was Tommy Boot, who had curly dark brown hair. Then there is Zander-ugh-who has dirty blonde hair but huge brown eyes, so it couldn’t be either one of them. Next were the identical Scamander twins, both had light curly blonde hair and shocking blue eyes. Finally, Joey Corner. Dirty brown hair, tall and those grey eyes. Holy shit, Athena likes Joey.

“You like Joey?!” My mouth hung open.

“What, is he like a bad guy or something?”

“No! No, of course not! He is basically the perfect guy for you. Joey is really nice and funny and smart not to mention head boy. Although he doesn’t play quidditch, he loves watching it. Plus, he can tell what your thinking and he isn’t too bad on the eyes.”

“He sounds perfect.”

“Well, people call him the Hogwarts golden boy.”

“Whose the golden girl?”

“People say it’s a toss up between Dom and I, but I don’t care about that stuff.”

“ASPEN! IT’S TIME TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL WING!” Dom called from the bathroom. I almost forgot that I started my treatment tonight. All of my friends were going with me until curfew since I had to stay there tonight.

“Do you have your stuff?” Ally asked, glancing at my bag. I swear, those two are practically my mother. Since I was only going there for one night, I was only bringing a tooth brush, my uniform and a few magazines.

“Yes mummy dearest.”

Ally rolled her eyes, “Athena, do you want to come with us?”

“Where?”

“We’re going to the hospital wing, since Aspen starts her treatment tonight.”

“Um, if you guys don’t mind I still have to unpack, so I’ll stay here.” I nodded, cancer could freak people out sometimes. They treat you differently. Personally, I hated it. I’m dying, and I’m not afraid of it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to give the fight of my life.

Yet, just because I’m dying doesn’t mean people should change the way they act around me. I haven’t changed my personality, or the way I act. So, why do other people get to change themselves for me? I never ever wanted that. My favorite thing about myself is the way I act, it gave me confidence. Why couldn’t other people just act like themselves?

That was my least favorite thing about cancer. I could deal with the pain. I could deal with the confusion. I could deal with not knowing what lyes ahead. I could deal with depression. But people tailoring themselves around my cancer? I despised it.

“Well, I’ll see you in the afternoon classes tomorrow.”

“Okay, good luck Aspen!”

“Thanks.” I waved to her as we left the room. Athena seemed nice overall, but I wasn’t going to be pumped if she took my spot on the quidditch team. It’s not that it’s her, it’s just I don’t want give up my spot. Quidditch is one of my favorite things to do, and it won’t be easy to leave it behind.

When we reached the common room, two of Al’s roommates wolf whistled at me. I looked down at myself. I had forgotten to change out of my after shower clothes. A pair of cotton pajama shorts and a tight red tank top. Oh merlin.

“Merlin, keep it in your pants.” Dom snapped, “She’s engaged and her fiancé will beat the crap out of you.” The boys’ eyes widened, and they ran out of the room. That’s what you get for messing with Dom’s best friend.

We went to get the boys, who we found talking in very hushed whispers, and they wouldn’t tell us what they were talking about. Which is kind of scary, ‘cause you never know what is going through those boys minds.

“So how are you feeling about all this?” Victorie asked me as I sat down on one of the beds.

“Okay, I mean, I hate to have to go through this again. Cancer treatment is really draining, but I’m glad I can have it here, with all my friends.” I smiled at the people surrounding me.

“That’s good. Are you ready for the needle?” I nodded, “Okay, one, two, three...” A sharp needle pinched my skin. I was so used to it, it didn’t hurt anymore. I hated being used to pain.

James squeezed my hand, which made me feel a little better. I just felt safer when he was round me. I could feel the medication being pumped into my veins, slowly crawling up them. I shivered.

“You okay?” James asked.

“Yeah.” I replied drowsily.

“Aspen is going to fall asleep within the next few minutes, you might want to say your goodbyes now.” Victorie warned. She was getting blurry.

Dom nodded, “I’ll see you tomorrow, A. Love you.” She gave me a weak smile.

“Bye, little A!” Freddie grinned.

“Good luck!” Bradley whispered.

Louis smiled at me, “I’m sure you’ll do great.”

Finally, Danny and Ally waved goodbye. Leaving just James, Vic and I. “Can I stay with her a little longer?” James asked hopefully.

Victorie sighed, “I guess. Just be in your common room by curfew or Neville will have my head. He already thinks Teddy and I favor you all too much.”

“Feel free to keep favoring us.” Victorie laughed and left for her office. “How are you feeling?” James asked warily.

“Sleepy.” I mumbled.

James smiled, “Well in that case, sleep tight my little A. I love you.”

“Love you too.” Were the last words that rolled off of my tongue before I fell asleep.

Author’s Note:

Oh my god, I’m so sorry it took me so long to post this! I had a surgery a few weeks back, so I haven’t really had time. So I finally sat my self down to finish the story. I’m really sorry if it’s not up to par! Although, I hope you guys liked it! Question time:
