It had been two days since I had told James and Sirius that I was pregnant. Lily and I had woken up the next morning to the smell of freshly cooked bacon and chocolate chip pancakes. I knew this was Sirius trying to apologize. He eventually got the words out. He really is excited he’s just scared. I understand that I mean I freaked when I first found out. Right now Lily and I have taken over the master bathroom. James is taking her out for a night on the town so we’re getting her all dolled up.
“Lil you look gorgeous will you stop futzing already.”
“I can’t help it Isa. I just get the feeling that tonight’s going to be a big deal and I want to look perfect…”
I zoned out at this point. I just looked out the window and saw the boys playing in the yard. Remus had been avoiding me for the last two days. I was really starting to get pissed. I missed my best friend, not that Lily wasn’t amazing it’s just sometimes it’s nice having a break from all the girlieness.
“Hello earth to Isabella. Are you in there?”
“Yeah. Sorry. I was just thinking about Remus. I hate that he’s avoiding me. I miss him you know.”
“Well then how about this. Sirius is going over to Molly and Arthur’s this evening while James and I are out. And I don’t know where Peter’s gone off to. Why you don’t go talk to Remus? You’ll be the only ones home just corner him. In the meantime big date in less than 20 minutes please you have to help me finish getting dressed.”
“Lils you have the perfect dress and shoes on. You’re wearing the most stunning necklace and earrings we own. Your hair is perfect and your makeup is absolutely flawless. You have 20 minutes to just relax. For once chill. Here let me get you a glass of wine.”
“I don’t want.”
“Lils I honestly don’t care what you want. I’ve been pampering you for two hours now. You’re plucked, buffed, shinned, and made up. I’m pregnant and extremely tired. Tonight I have to go corner one of my best friends and make him talk to me. So I’m going to go pour you a glass of wine since I can’t have any you’re going to enjoy it for me. In just a few minutes James is going to come in here and take you out on an amazing date.”
“Ok ok I get it. I love you Isa you know that right.”
“I know Lils. I love you too.”
Lily and James left for their date and Sirius left for Molly and Arthur’s and Peter is God knows where. I think I’ll read for a few before I corner Remus, hopefully I’ll calm down enough to be coherent. I really hope he doesn’t ignore me. I know he’s hurt, but he’s still my best friend. I don’t know what I would do without him. I guess I’m calm enough to head down.
“Remus open it up it’s me. Please Remus opens the door. Remus I swear If you don’t open the door I’m gonna puke on your front step.”
That did it. “What do you want Isa?”
“What do I want? Are you kidding me? I want my best friend back. I know you know. You’ve been ignoring me ever since we moved in here. Now let me in or are you going to make me stay out here?”
“Fine come in.” He said as he turned his back on me.
“Please Remus. Talk to me. You’ve been my best friend nearly as long as Lily has been. I don’t know what I would do without you. Are you mad because James was the one that told you? Are you mad because I’m pregnant? What? You have to tell me. Please Remus I’m begging you. Do you hate me? Is that it you hate me now?”
“Oh Isa. I don’t hate you. I could never hate you. I’m not mad I’m just in shock I guess. I’m happy for you really. I just don’t know what to say.”
“How about Congratulations? Or how about I still love you.”
“Of course I still love you. You’ve been my best friend for seven years. I can’t lose you. It’s just that…”
Remus broke off midsentence and started pacing. I’ve never seen him like this. “Remus look at me. It’s still me. I’m still me. Just because I’m pregnant doesn’t mean you’re going to lose me. And will you please stop that infernal pacing you’re making me nauseous.”
“Sorry. It’s just everything’s changing so fast. We just graduated and now you’re pregnant and James is asking Lily to marry him.”
“Oh bloody hell. I wasn’t supposed to tell you that. Please you have to act surprised when she tells you.”
“Of course I will. But Remus none of this explains why you’ve been avoiding me. Please Remus. You’re my best friend. I couldn’t bare it if I lost you just as Sirius comes to terms with the fact that he’s going to be a father.”
“You don’t get it Isabella Marie do you? I could never hate you because I love you.”
“I know you do. I love you too. You’re my best friend.”
“No Isabella I’m IN Love with you. I have been ever since fourth year.”
“Oh Remus. I, I don’t know what to…Oh God not again. I think I’m gonna be sick.”
I ran to the bathroom and proceeded to be sick to my stomach. Remus followed me into the bathroom. He held my hair and rubbed my back while I threw up. “Here’s some water Isa.”
“Thanks Remus. I’m sorry I didn’t mean to throw up while we were trying to talk. I can’t help it. It’s just this damn morning sickness.”
“It’s ok I understand. Look Isa I don’t expect you to feel the same way I do. I don’t want this to change anything between us. Please you’re still my best friend.”
“Oh Remus of course we’re still best friends. I just I need some time to think. Ok?”
“I do love you Remus. I just don’t know what to make of all this.”
“Well it sounds like Lily and James are back. Should we go find out if they’re engaged or not?” I asked. Not wanting to go in so we could finish our conversation, but at the same time not wanting it to end for fear that Remus would go back to not talking to me.
“Isa you’re never going to believe the night I had.”
“Lils while you tell Isa all about our night I’m going to floo over to Wormtail’s and pick him up and then swing buy the burrow and pick up the gang. Remus and I will be back shortly.”
“Sure thing sweet heart. We’ll be here when you get back.” James leaned down and kissed Lily on his way out. “First of all, look look look. Look at my ring. James asked me to marry him. Can you believe it?”
“Congratulations Lily. I’m so happy for you guys. Now tell me all about it.”
“Well James surprised me by taking me to this beautiful restaurant in Paris. Can you believe it he took me to Paris? The restaurant was absolutely stunning. The food was beyond divine, but the really special part of the evening wasn’t until after dinner. James took me on a walk down the Champs-Elysees and then over to the Eiffel Tower. Then he got down on one knee with the Tower behind him. He reached into his pocket and took out a little black box and took my hand. He looked deep into my eyes and said ‘Lily I love you. You have brought such joy into my life. Before you I felt like something was missing. Will you make me the happiest man in the world and say you’ll marry me.’ I was so stunned but I knew I wanted to marry him.”
“Oh Lily I’m so happy for you. It sounds so romantic.”
“We brought back Champagne and sparkling cider so we can all celebrate.”
“Actually Lil I’ve been reading the pregnancy books Molly loaned me and the books say that I can have a small amount of alcohol periodically. So I’m definitely going to have a little bit of Champagne. I mean we are celebrating my best friend’s engagement.” Just then the fireplace lit up and out stepped James closely followed by Sirius and the rest of the gang.
“Oh Lily congratulations James just told us the news.”
“Thanks Molly. Here look.”
“Oh James you did great. It’s absolutely beautiful.”
“Great going man. She’s an amazing woman. You do right by her you hear me.”
“I love her Arthur. I’d die before I let anything bad happen to her.”
“Hi beautiful. How are you and our darling baby doing?”
“We’re good. Happily content today although I would love some pudding right now.”
“It just so happens that I bought some pudding yesterday. I’ll go get it for you.”
“Thanks Sirius.” I’m happy that Sirius is being so helpful and loving, but I still wish that Remus would look at me. “I’d like to propose a toast. To James and Lily and the start of something wonderful.”
“To James and Lily” everyone chorused as we all took a sip of our champagne. It makes me happy to look around the room at all of our friends. Lily and James beaming, the kids playing in the corner, Molly and Arthur laughing with Sirius and Remus. The only one that didn’t look happy was Peter. He had been visiting his parents so much lately. I guess none of the guys have been paying much attention to him. I mean Sirius has been so busy coming to terms with my pregnancy and James planning his proposal to Lily. Even Remus has been distracted.
“Hey Peter want to go for a walk with me? It’s such a nice night and I fancy some fresh air.”
“Sure thing Isa.”
“It really is a beautiful night don’t you think Pete?” I asked once we had walked for a few minutes.
“Huh, oh yeah.”
“Ok Pete what’s going on? You’re distracted. You’re sad when everyone else is celebrating. You’re hardly talking to us these days. You were just as excited as the rest of us when we were talking about moving in together now you’re never here. You go home every day. We only see you to eat and sleep anymore.”
“It’s my dad. He’s really sick Izzy. My mum can’t handle him on her own. I’ve been going home to take him to his doctor’s appointments. I help my mum out around the house, cleaning, cooking. My dad can’t bath on his own and won’t let my mum help. I have to do everything for him. I may have to move back home soon.”
“Oh Pete. Is there anything we can do to help?”
“I don’t think so. He doesn’t want anyone to know. He’s an incredibly proud man.”
“Pete I know money’s always been tough for you guys. Is your mum getting by alright? I could loan you some money if you needed.”
“Thanks Izzy. We’re ok for now, but I might take you up on that when it comes time to bury him. Will you do me a favor and not tell the guys yet? I’ll tell them I promise, but tonight’s a night to celebrate. By the way I haven’t gotten a chance to tell you congratulations. You and Sirius are going to make great parents. I’m really happy for you.”
“Thanks Pete. Come on lets go back to the party.”
