To say I was happy would be a lie. To say that I was smiling would be the truth. I’m smiling but I’m not happy. I’m dead inside. And no one can save me.

I was walking down the hallway like I usually do. Books in hand, wand at the ready. I was walking towards my Charms class, avoiding everyone like the plague. Or maybe they were avoiding me, I’ll never know. Ever since Viktor left me I’ve been an emotionless shell of myself. Harry and Ron don’t even look at me even more without grimacing. Ginny will talk to me every once in a while but not often. I tend to mope by myself.

I was walking through the door when I bumped into someone.

“Pardon me,” I said quietly. I looked up and saw the cold, calculating eyes of Draco Malfoy. He just sniffed and walked the other direction. I wasn’t even worth a snide comment from Draco Malfoy anymore. I sighed and walked to my seat, not at the front of class, but in the middle.

Harry and Ron walked in with Ginny and Neville. Neville gave me a smile and a wave and sat down with the others.

Charms went on slowly. I took my notes, asked my questions, and waited for class to be dismissed so I could work on my homework. I might be a shell of myself but my academics still come first, no matter what. Professor McGonagall has asked me time and time again if I’m alright, but my homework kept coming in and getting exceptional marks so surely nothing could be wrong. She eventually dropped it but she kept watching me like a hawk.

I went to the Gryffindor tower and sat in one of the comfy chairs and started studying the material needed for my essay when I heard loud footsteps, a slam, and then my book was knocked out of my hand.

“What in the bloody hell is your problem?” I screamed, and then looked at who it was. It was Harry.

“What is wrong with you?” I yelled.

“No, Hermione, what is wrong with you?” Harry yelled back. “You haven’t even tried to communicate with us for the last three months. Not once. Ever since Viktor left you for that other girl you’ve become a ghost. Guess what Hermione? He’s not coming back. So it’s time to move forward and forget it.”

“Why do you even care?” I whispered, tears dripping down my face. His words stung.

“Because we love you.” Harry whispered. “We’re your friends. And we love you. We want you to come back to the land of the living. Viktor Krum is the last thing or person that you should be worried about. He’s scum, and that’s all he’ll ever be. You’re better off without him.”

“I loved him, Harry. I gave myself to him. The only part of me that no one else can ever have ever again.” I said that part so quietly I didn’t think he heard me.

“You never told us that…” Harry ran his hands through his hair. “Hermione… there will be other first times. And they will be more special than what Viktor Krum could ever give you.”

I sighed and picked my book up. “I have homework, Harry.”

“That’s another thing. There will always be homework. Please come and hang out with us. We’re begging you.”

“We?” I laughed. “Ron and Ginny won’t even look at me anymore. I got a wave from Neville.”

“We miss you, too. Even if it doesn’t seem like it.” Ron said, walking from behind a pillar. Ginny and Neville and Luna followed.

I burst into tears and ran to Ron and gave him a hug. He wrapped his arms around me and held me tightly. “I missed you so much, it hurt.” He whispered. “I just wanted you to know that.”

I felt hands being placed on my back and I knew that with their help, I could come back, and I could heal.

4 months later and I’m back to being my normal self. Sometimes it hurts when I think about Viktor but my friends and family have helped me come back.

Summer break has come along and I’m staying at the Weasley’s as my parents are staying in Wales with some friends for a month.

“Hermione? Are you decent?”

I pulled my shirt over my head and buttoned my jeans.

“I am now, come on in.”

Ron walks in and smiles.

“You look pretty today,” he said with a toothy grin. I blush. “How about we go for a stroll?”

“Sure,” I say. He holds his hand out and I take it.

We’ve been doing little things like that. Holding hands when we’re together, he puts his arms around me when I’m cold. I think he likes me and I think I like him back. But we’ve been friends for so long that it could get… weird. I’m willing to take that leap though.

We walk far out into the woods, talking about everything and nothing. About Harry, and his blossoming romance with Ginny. About Neville and Luna, and of Bill and Fleur. We get to the most beautiful meadow, full of lush green grass and beautiful trees.

We sat down across from each other and were silent for a few moments. The sunlight hit his face and made his red hair glow, making him look very handsome and thoughtful. He looked up at me suddenly and reached his hand forward.

“Hold still,” he said quietly. He brushed a lock of my hair that was in my eyes back and cupped my head in his hand. “You’re beautiful. This sunlight makes you look radiant.”

My heart leapt. “I was just thinking the same thing about you.”

His face got closer to mine. “I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time…”

He brushed his lips with mine. His lips were soft, molding into mine as our tongues danced. His hands ran up and down along my back bringing me closer to him. I pulled at the hemline of his shirt and untucked it, and Ron looked up at me, breaking our kiss.

“Hermione,” He breathed. “Are you sure?”

“I have never been more sure about anything in my life. I love you, Ron Weasley. And I trust you.”
