“Bethany Joanne Heart! If you do not get down here in the next twenty seconds we are leaving without you!” My mother screeched from the lower floor. Lovely woman she is.
“Hold on!” I shrieked back. As you can see I take after her.
I threw a few more random articles of clothing into my trunk and slammed it shut. The only problem was it wouldn’t close enough for me to latch it. It was the train station all over again. I threw my self onto my trunk in complete desperation. I buckled it close with one hand and stood up.
I pulled it off my bed and it fell to the floor with an intense bang. I yanked it to the door, huffing and puffing. Man, I can hold off a two hundred pound beater but I can’t even take a two hundred and fifty pound trunk down a flight of stairs.
"Bethany!” My mother roared.
"I said give me a minute!” Okay, this was not working. I opened up my window and lifted my trunk onto the sill. I cast a simple cushioning charm on it and shoved the trunk out the window. It bounced harmlessly in the grass.
With my trunk out of the way, I ran down the stairs to meet my family. My mother had brought in my trunk, and she looked mad. “Bethany, I thought we told you to stop dropping your trunk out of your window!” Her voice gradually rose with her mounting anger.
I steadily backed my trunk out the door, “It’s not like it broke! Plus, I got down here faster!”
Adam put my trunk in the back of the car. “You guys have this conversation every time we go back to Hogwarts.”
"Aw come on mate! It wouldn’t be a trip back to school without Beth throwing her trunk out the window!” My heart jumped as James sauntered up to the car. He shot me a sexy crooked smirk and flashed me a quick wink when Adam’s back was turned.
I bit back a grin and slid into the expanded back seat of the car. I saw Al and Lily run up, ushered by their mother. “Harry had work again,” she explained to my mother.
"So did our dad,” Erik added his trunk to the boot.
"So I guess it’s just us girls today!” my mum said helping Al with his trunk.
Al came around to hop in the car, but James put his hand in Al’s face and shoved him out of the way. He slid in next to me and looked around the car a few times before “spotting” me and giving a jolt of surprise.
“Well hey, Beth! Didn’t see you there.”
“Yeah. Apparently you didn’t see me either!” Al snapped, crawling into the back seat and “accidentally” kicking James in the shin.
“Ow! What the bleeding hell did you do that for?” James snapped. The two began a dramatic slap fight with a lot of flying elbows.
I screamed in shock as one of James’ elbows landed square in my chest. “You hit my boob!” I screamed out.
James turned to me, flushed with embarrassment. “O-oh, Merlin. I’m sorry Beth-“
“Who grabbed my sister’s boob?” Adam came into view, looking furious.
“No one! No one grabbed your sisters-“
“SNEAK ATTACK!” Al cried and wrapped his arms around James’ neck, cutting off his sentence. Adam and Erik crawled in and joined the fight.
I groaned and opened up my door, deciding it better to leave now before I got hit in the chest again. I slammed the door behind me and went to stand by Lily who was waiting patiently outside of the car, glancing over her nails. “Mum.” She called.
Ginny turned away from fitting the trunks in the boot and saw the ruckus going on in the back seat. “Bloody…” She mumbled before climbing into the car. There was a lot of screaming and when Ginny came back out the boys were sitting in a uniform line.
"Get in girls,” she commanded us. We obeyed without any question.
It’s funny how things work out. One minute you’re sitting on one side of the car next to James Potter, the boy you have a slight (and perfectly healthy mind you) obsession with and who also punched you in the heart. The next moment you’re on the other side of the car sitting next to his sister. By the way, when I say you I really mean me.
But the reason it’s funny is because even with James on the other side of the car, I could still feel his eyes on me. I would look over every once in a while and catch his eye. He would give me a slight nod of acknowledgement and a small smirk, and I would blush and look back out the window.
"Good Merlin, just get back together already,” Lily whispered to me.
"It’s not that simple,” I replied softly. “He has a girlfriend-“
"Who he’s planning to break up with,” Lily interrupted.
I turned my head so fast I got a whiplash. “How do you know that?”
Lily shrugged. “I don’t. But it’s pretty obvious that it’s going to happen.”
I frowned. “It is?” “You’re miserable, he’s miserable”
Lily smirked at me. “Yeah, everyone at school is talking about it.”
I paused in surprise before asking, “They are?” Man, how am I this out of the loop? Well, I guess you actually have to talk to people to be in the loop. Wait, does Cal know about this foreshadowed break up? Is that the real reason he’s at school right now, to get in good with Rebecca? I smirked to myself. Cal you are such a dog.
"...I mean I don’t even know how you can stay calm with what the slag did to you.”
"Huh?” I totally hadn’t been paying attention to Lily at all.
She huffed in annoyance but repeated herself anyway. “I was saying I couldn’t believe how calm you are around Rebecca. She says she’s your friend and then goes and steals your man! I would totally hate the bitch if I were you.”
"I don’t hate Rebecca!” I said, surprised Lily would even suggest such a thing.
"Why? You have every right to!” Lily spoke as if I were the one going bonkers.
That is an excellent question. Why didn’t I hate Rebecca? Lily was right- I had every right to. I just… didn’t. The Rebecca I grew up knowing would never do something like that… so why did she agree to go out with James? “I just… don’t?” I answered lamely.
"Whatever. So,” Lily whispered suddenly animated, her eyes ablaze with a new fire. “What is your plan for revenge?”
I stared at her, completely lost. “What?”
"I assume you want to get James back for the arse hole way he broke up with you.”
Uh… “I guess?”
Lily’s grin widened. “Okay, so what are you going to do?”
"Oh, well…” I sat for a few minutes in thought. “Oh! I got it. What if we trip him as he’s getting on the Hogwarts Express?”
Lily blinked a few times, “Excuse me?”
"No, no think about it! Not only will he be embarrassed, he’ll probably hit his chin or something. It’ll be a double whammy!” I grinned, nodding my head in approval of my own plan.
Lily stared at me in silence before saying, “It’s bizarre that you can have the nerve to punch a bloke but can’t even come up with a simple plan of revenge. Maybe you really are a Hufflepuff.”
"Hey… I’m half and half.” I recalled fondly my conversation with James in which he first called me that.
"Yeah, well can I work with the Gryffindor half? Because the Hufflepuff half isn’t going to help me come up with a plan of revenge.”
I huffed, “Lily, I don’t need a plan of revenge. How are we ever going to move past this if I’m so consumed with payback?”
"Yeah, I definitely won’t be able to work with the Hufflepuff side,” Lily said seriously. I shot her a look. “Oh come on, Beth!” She pleaded silently. “We don’t have to make it bad. Just enough to bruise his ego a bit.”
I shook my head, “I don’t know, Lily.”
"Oh come on. Haven’t you ever heard of yolo?”
I quirked my head to the side, “I think they mentioned it on the muggle radio.”
"Okay, what does it stand for?” Lily asked.
"It stands for something? They kept saying ‘it’s a yolo summer’ so I thought it was some type of epidemic.”
Lily snorted, “That actually makes sense. I can see how you thought that. No, I heard the muggle neighbors talking about it. It stands for ‘you only live once’.”
I pulled a face “Where the ruddy hell do the muggles get this stuff?”
"I know right?” Lilly smirked. “Anyway, there is some truth in that. Well, unless you’re Voldemort, but dad took care of that little problem.”
I wasn’t going to stop and correct Lily on her misuse of the word “little”. “So you’re saying we should take revenge because we only live once?”
Lily nodded, “It won’t be that bad, just a little prank. We’re only in school once. Do you want to tell your grandchildren you followed all the rules?” Lily spoke as if there was nothing worse.
Personally, I did want to tell them that. If we didn’t follow rules then all hell would break lose. Still, a little fun wouldn’t hurt. “I guess not… what do you have in mind?”
"Don’t worry,” Lily assured me. “I have the devious mind of Fred Weasley the first in me. I’ll come up with the plan. You just have to help me carry it out.” She gave a malicious smirk and turned back towards the front. Maybe this was a bad idea.
* * * * *
"Kill me now,” James moaned.
We were all about to kill ourselves. We were headed back to school and had managed to cram almost all of us into a compartment. This was a mistake because Rose and Scorpious, as well as Al and Amy were being all coupally and stuff. They were doing that obnoxious thing where they would finish each other’s sentences and then giggle a lot over the littlest things.
"Please tell me we weren’t this bad when we dated,” James whispered to me.
"If we were, may lightning strike me down right here.” James laughed at my joke, but I secretly worried that a lightning strike might come out of nowhere and bitch slap me in the face. I’ll just have to be on my guard from now on.
"Oi! Al! Get a bloody room why don’t you,” James snapped.
Al, who had been giving Amy eskimo kisses, aimed a kick at James. Much like the car ride to the station, the two began to fight.
"Oi!” Lily screamed, effectively stopping all interactions. She stood up. “Knock it off right now or so help me I will pull a mum and raise some serious hell! Do we want a replay of the car ride?”
"No,” Al and James mumbled.
"James, apologize to Al,” Lily commanded.
"There is no way I’m voicing an apology to Al-“
Lily gripped James’ shirtfront in her fist, “Then right one,” she spat through clenched teeth.
James nodded, and Lily shoved a bit of parchment and a quill into his hand.
"Woos,” I murmured.
James shot me a glare.
He scribbled something down on the spare bit of parchment provided by Lily, balled it up, and threw it at Al’s head.
Al caught it, read it, and immediately threw it back. “That’s not an apology James!”
I picked up the paper from the floor and smoothed it out. James’ apology went as follows:
I’m sorry I’m sooo amazing (a lot of people are put off by it at first).
I laughed and tossed it back to Al. “Take it Al, it’s the most you’re ever going to get.”
Al mumbled something and stuffed the letter in his pocket before going back to Amy. Shortly after, the murmur of conversation picked up.
"Hey, what do you mean it’s the most he’s ever going to get?” James turned to me as soon as it was loud enough not be overheard.
I shrugged, “I don’t know, that you’re not really one to apologize.”
"Is this about our break up?” James voice was a whisper now.
My insides squirmed in discomfort. Oh, awkward break up conversations… yay! “No, it wasn’t. But now that I think about it, you never actually apologized.”
James turned to face me completely, “Beth, I’ve been wanting to talk to you, but you keep beating me up every time I try.”
"Yeah, but that’s talking to me James. Not once did you say ‘Beth, I want to apologize’. If you had started off with that, maybe I wouldn’t have smacked you so hard… sorry about that by the way.”
James shook his head, “It’s fine. I deserved it.” He gave a small grin. “I don’t know how much good this is going to do now, but for what it’s worth, I’m sorry for being a complete prat Beth.”
I nodded. “Apology accepted.”
James held out his hand, “Truce?”
I hesitated only slightly, thinking of Lily’s plan for revenge. I grabbed James’ outstretched hand. “Truce.”
Merlin, I must be part Slytherin too, because all I could think was: Now he’ll never see the prank coming.
I know, I know, I'm a terrible person. Who says, "I'll be updating pretty quickly," and then waits a month to do so? It's not my fault I swear! Here I am, minding my own business, and then WAM! school comes and bitch slaps me in the face. Lame.
Anyway, I know this chapter was short, and was more of a filler so I'm sorry for that. But hey, James and Beth have called a truce? Does this piss you off to no end? Does it make you want to do a happy jig? And what about Lily's master plan? Tell me all in the comments!
