Perfect! I thought. I will be able to tell Hermione how I feel during one of these ‘Mingle Sessions.’ As I walked back to the common room with Hermione at my side, we passed Weasel and Lavender. As we got closer to them we could hear their conversation.
“…glad that you’re not with that know-it-all Granger. Aren’t I a much better girlfriend, won-won?!” Lavender was jumping up and down.
I looked at Hermione and she was glaring at them. I had never seen her so mad. Before I could say anything she marched over to Lavender and Weasel and starting shouting.
“Lavender, you daft dimpo! You could never be a better girlfriend than anyone! Especially not me! Now, I advise you to not gossip about me when I’m not around!”
And just when I thought she would turn around and leave, she didn’t something very out of character. She punched Lavender in the face, just like she punched me four years ago. Then she turned, grabbed my wrist and pulled me to our common room. It felt rather nice having her hold me but she let go as soon as we were at the door.
Hermione : : :
I let go of Draco hand and climbed through the portrait hole, furious at Lavender yet kind of giddy that I actually punched her. I took a seat on one of the couches by the fire place, I knew he would be listening.
“Why did I do that? It was so stupid! I’m going to get a detention for sure!” I was sure I would be getting Dumbledore’s owl at dinner tonight. I then felt Draco sit done beside me and put his arm around me. Something I didn’t expect him to do.
“It actually wasn’t stupid. She deserved it and I think it was great.” I heard him say to me. “Why don’t we go to library and read?”
Oh my god! I haven’t been to the library yet! “I would love that.” He took my hand and led me out the portrait hole and to the library. We sat and read for hours, even through lunch. By the time we were done it was dinner time and we went down to the great hall and sat in the same spot we did for breakfast. We talked for what felt like only minutes but when I looked up, the great hall was practically empty. I couldn’t fool myself, I really like Draco Malfoy. I don’t know if he feels this way though, probably not.

Just as we were about to round the corner to where our common room was located I heard the unmistakeable voice of Crabbe.
“Draco! Haven’t seen you since school started, mate. Where you been!?” While he said that last part he looked over at Hermione. “C’mon, man, we gotta go play some jokes on the oaf, Hagrid. Just like old times.”
Crap! What do I do? I can’t ruin my rep! “Uh, yeah. I’m in.” Was all I could say, I couldn’t turn him down.
“Umm, Draco,” Hermione said, looking at me like I was crazy. “We only have 20 minutes until 7:00. You’ll get detention if you’re out that late. Besides, I thought you and I were going to start planning an activity for this weekend. We are head girl and head boy you know. I thought you said you and Crabbe weren’t friends anyways."
Oh shoot! Crabbe looked at me with an is-it-true expression on his face. “I, you know, figured we weren’t that close, Crabbe, but we’re still buds. And can’t you just start planning, Hermione? You are the smart one."
“Fine! I’ll start myself, but you will help me!” and with she turned and stalked into the portrait hole.

Who does Draco Malfoy think he is? I thought he was maybe beginning to like me! Guess not! Well, he’s not getting off the hook easily. I sat down at a desk in the common room and started writing down ideas for the weekend. By the time 7:00 rolled around I had figured we should plan a welcome back ball. Just as the clock stroked 7:00, Draco climbed through the hole.
“How’s the planning, Granger?” he asked as if he hadn’t just blown me off.
“Well, for your information, I decided what we should do and when we should do it. Now you have to figure out the rest!” I said in a superior tone. “Because you just blew me off for that pea-brain, Crabbe!” That’s right. He won’t get away with this.
“You know I couldn’t just turn him down! He would ruin my rep! He would tell people I am spending time with you!” he retorted.
“Well if spending time with me is such a hassle then maybe you shouldn’t hang out with me anymore! I would storm off to my room right now, if we were allowed!” I can’t believe he just said that! I don’t want to fight with him.
Draco : : :
“Hermione, I’m sorry I didn’t mean that.” I told her quietly, “If you’ll forgive me, I have something to tell you.”
“What? What could you possibly want to tell me?”
We were standing so close that if I took one step we would be touching.
“I love you.” I confessed to her. I figured now was as good as any. I should start the year off with a bang. I looked at her trying to figure out what she was thinking. She was staring at me with her mouth open, shocked. “I don’t care that you’re a Gryffindor or that we were enemies for so long.”
Hermione : : :
What did he just say? He loves me! Oh my god! “I-I Love you too.” And as I said it, I realized it was true. I did love him. He was gorgeous and really quite nice; he has some flaws but who doesn’t? Before I could say anything else, he closed the space between us in one stride and crushed his lips to mine. He curled his hand around my waist and I wrapped both my arms around his neck, I had to stand on my tip-toes, he was so tall. We broke apart and smiled at each other. He was the first one to speak.
“So Granger, what is your brilliant idea for this weekend?” he asked while smiling.
“Well,” I started while walking to the couch and sitting down, “I think we should throw a ball. Dumbledore says we need to get people to mingle more so I figured we could make it mandatory for all students.” I looked at his face and he didn’t seem to object so I continued. “But you don’t have to take me as a date, if you don’t want to ruin your bad boy rep. I understand, we could just …” I couldn’t finish my sentence, he cut me off.
“Hermione, stop,” this was the first time he addressed me as Hermione instead of Granger. “I would be stupid not to want to take you as a date. I don’t care if it ruins my rep, I don’t even want that rep anymore. Weasel was stupid not to fight for you. So if you’re okay with our relationship going public then so am I.”
By the time we were done talking about plans for the ball it was approaching 9:00. We both decided to get some sleep, after all, we have classes tomorrow.
