Disclamer: I do not own the characters of my story except for a few originals. The rest belongs to the lovely J.K.Rowling
Weeks had passed since the ball and James found himself being more depressed than ever. He acted normal around his friends and others, but in reality the idea of Lily and Cal was killing him. It wasn’t that her dating was upsetting him, he learned to accept that, but Cal Foster was not to be trusted. There was nothing more that he wanted than to tell Lily this, but he knew she would not believe him.
Few people knew that Cal and James had a past; in which they were long-time enemies. Their families had a long history and as such James would never learn to accept Cal. He was concerned that Lily was falling for this man, when in the end he was destined to hurt her. In fact it was Cal’s assertiveness in only stabbing other’s in the back that had led to the two of them being enemies. There had been a time when James had trusted Cal to be there for him, only to have to see his true colors. James had relied on Cal to explain to a court what occurred one evening when James was attacked, yet Cal stayed quiet. At first he thought the boy was just nervous, but later James learned he was being selfish. Cal did not speak merely because he did not want to risk his status, no matter if James was hurt or not.
School was coming to a start soon and James was actually beginning to dread the start of the new term. Yesterday Lily had Cal join his family for dinner and it was announced that the bastard would be entering Hogwarts for his seventh year. Sure he had been going to Hogwarts for the past six years, but it had been rumored he was leaving.
James wasn’t entirely certain however if the anger he was feeling at the present time was due to Cal, or merely due to his lack of saving Lily. He was disgusted that he had even told Lily he hoped Cal made her happy. Why had he even said something like that? He had seen her smiling and didn’t want to ruin that moment, but if Cal was dangerous what did it matter.
Sneaking out of his bedroom, James carefully climbed over Sirius and Remus, hoping that neither of them would hear him up. The last thing he needed was a serious talk with Moony, telling him he needed to get over Lily. He knew he should but it seemed impossible when he was so deeply in love with her.
Walking downstairs, James made his way to the kitchen wanting to drown his current sorrows in a bowl of cereal. Yet, it seemed as though the world had a different plan for him. Sitting at the table was the angel of his dream, but next to her was the one person he wanted to hurt the most. Scowling he grabbed himself something to eat and made his way to the opposite end of the table. What did she see in him? He knew Cal was working her and was shocked that Lily couldn’t see it himself. There had been several times he tried to tell her, only to be cut off by someone else.
His mind wandered back to a few days ago, the conversation he had had with Cal about Lily. Pain gripped at his heart as he thought about the way his angel was being used by such a heartless bastard. Lily deserved someone that loved her for who she was. She needed someone to support her, who would allow her to grow and would sometimes give her some constructive criticism. Instead she was with Cal Foster, a man James was surely certain would bring her down, and no matter how much he tried to help her everything seemed to fail. His mind wandering back to that day he was angered at the bastard, Cal’s words ringing in James’ ears.
James had been planning the annual first day prank with the Mauraders when he heard the doorbell ring. He planned to ignore it, figuring that someone else would get the door, but when it rang again he had to excuse himself and grab the door.
He wished he hadn’t.
On the other side of the door, with his usual fake grin was Cal. Quickly James went to close the door, remarking, “You are not welcome here.”
In a swift moment Cal had broken past James a smug look on his face. He sauntered around the Potter’s grand entrance, making his way to the middle of the room, directly under the chandelier. Pulling out his wand he managed to extract a single crystal from it, before holding it up for James to see.
“Isn’t it funny that Lily’s eyes sparkle the same way as this crystal when I enter the room. Yet, when she sees you they seem to flash red. You lost Potter. Lily is mine and you will never have her. What’s even better is the fact that she thinks I love her. How wrong she is,” then the bastard smiled at the anger James was displaying. “No I do not love her. Yet I do love the torture you will have to endure as you watch her with me. Her brightness will be diminished and there’s nothing that you can do about it.”
James went to reach for his wand, pointing it at Cal with a menacing look upon his face. He was about to hex Cal when Lily entered the room.
“POTTER! WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?”
He had tried to explain what had happened but Lily had only taken it as jealously. Her normally emerald eyes had flashed red and she slapped him, accusing him of taking out his anger on an innocent human being. He wanted to explain to her that she was so far from the truth, yet she would not listen.
His heart ached each time he saw her with Foster. There were so many times that he wanted to save her, to show her how love was supposed to be, but something seemed to be pulling him back. Part of it was Lily herself and another part, the deeper part, was his desire not to ruin her happiness. True he knew that it was false happiness but it seemed wrong to interfere when in the past he had rarely seen her smile.
He knew that he had to find a way to tell Lily the truth, but how he was not certain. It was times like this that he normally would go to Remus and ask for help, yet Remus was unstable at the moment as the full moon was coming. Another possibly would be her best friend Mia, yet she hated his guts on the grounds of her being loyal to Lily. That and lately Mia Leroux seemed more prone to snapping than normal.
James was beyond lost at what to do. Entering the kitchen he sighed grabbing a bowl and filling it with cereal. Grabbing milk from the fridge he contemplated what he should do, how he could convey his concern to Lily. Absentmindedly he poured his milk onto his cereal, or at least so he had thought.
“Ummm, Prongs? Might I ask why you are pouring milk all over the table?” Sirius’ voice broke through James’ thoughts.
Looking down James saw the sopping wet mess he had created and sprang into action. When he sat back down he tried to avoid Sirius’ eyes, but found that he could not ignore his best friend.
“Seriously mate, what is bothering you?” Sirius asked, concern etched on his face.
It was then that James broke down and explained to his best friend what had been going on in his mind throughout the past week. He explained the confrontation he had had with Cal and the fact that the bastard was only using Lily. During his rant he watched Sirius for some sort of reaction, every now he would see Sirius’ eyes flicker with rage, but quickly this seemed to be masked. Overall he appeared to be rather calm regarding the whole situation, which shocked James a bit.
Once James had finished Sirius spent a moment thinking on exactly how to break to his friend what he believed he should do. He knew James might not like his response, but it was something he needed to hear. “Mate I know this may be hard to hear, but I don’t think there is anything you can do. Lily has made her choice and you must accept it. I realize that Cal is using her but Lily is smart. She will realize this in time and she will decide to get even. From what I have seen between her and Cal she doesn’t really love him. Sure he makes her happy but I can tell it’s not enough. You need to allow her to learn this on her own; let her discover herself. By allowing her this you might be rewarded.”
James found himself seething at the seams, but he took a deep breath hoping to calm down. It worked, but barely. “How? How do I stand by and watch her make such a choice, knowing that she might get hurt?”
“You stand by her, waiting to support her when she is ready for your support. It made be hard but it must be done.”
James nodded. While he might not like the idea it seemed like the most sensible thing to do. “I’ll do it for her. However, if he hurts her then I will make him pay. She is my everything and always will be.”
