“Hey Lily-Pad, what’re you doing in my room?” I leaned against the doorframe, and watched my sister turn beetroot.
“Nothing” she mumbled, trying desperately to hide something behind her back.
“Lily…….” I raised an eyebrow. She shook back her hair and stared at me defiantly.
I shrugged and made to go fling myself on my bed, but at the last minute, I lunged. There is a reason I am the best chaser, like ever.
“Why do you have one of my t-shirts?”
“Mom wants the clothes for the wash” she mumbled, staring down at her shoes. She was wearing a pair of Al’s old runners.
“But this is clean?”
“Ok seriously, you’re stealing one of my t-shirts, and you’re wearing Al’s old runners, what’s going on?” I turned to face her.
“Nothing” she pushed past me roughly, grabbed the t-shirt, and thundered down the stairs. As she passed, I got a face-full of red hair that looked as if she hadn’t brushed it in a week.
Realisation suddenly dawned on me.
“Please do not tell me you are trying to dress like that homeless tramp Jade Goyle!” I followed her down the stairs, and into the kitchen.
“James!” my mother snapped. I looked around the kitchen, and who should be perched on top of a counter, but Jade Goyle. Speak of the devil, and the devil shall appear.
“What’s she doing here?” I pointed accusingly towards the she-devil.
“Helping Rose with her Potions” IT answered.
“Well, in case you haven’t noticed, ROSE DOESN’T LIVE HERE” I said slowly.
“I needed to borrow Al’s book” Rose entered the room behind me.
“Since when are you two all pally-pally?” I narrowed my eyes and looked from one to the other.
IT ignored me, and turned to Lily.
“Show me that” IT pointed towards my t-shirt. Lily handed it over. Great, now I’m going to have to burn it. IT held it up for inspection.
“Steal one of Albus’s next time, James wouldn’t know style if it hit him in the face” she winked at me, and swung at the air. Lily laughed obnoxiously loud, Merlin that child is annoying.
“Ready to go?” Rose asked.
She leapt off the counter, and sashayed out the door without so much as goodbye, or kiss my arse. Rude cow.
“Watch out Rose! There’s a reason she never brushes her hair, she doesn’t want you to see her devil horns!” I shouted after them, slamming the back door.
“James!” My mother pointed her wand threateningly at me “Never in my life did I think you would be so rude to anybody! I thought-”
Thankfully, I was saved by the sound of the doorbell. Mom’s rants had a tendency to go on for hours, and hours, and hours. I strode down the long hall, and flung open the door, to let Fred and Chris inside.
“What’s wrong with you?” Fred smirked.
“IT was here” I said darkly, leading the way into the sitting-room.
“I’m guessing ‘IT’ means Jade?”
“Do not say that name!” I shouted, sticking my fingers in my ears.
“Jade! Jade! Jade! Jade!” Fred chanted, bouncing up and down on the couch.
“And this is why I look up to Albus” Lily had entered the room.
“Charming” she death-stared me “But Mom told me to tell you that we’re leaving for the Burrow in a bit, so be ready.”
“Yeah, yeah” I waved my hand impatiently at her. She stuck out her tongue, and stalked out of the room.
“What was Jade doing here anyway?”
“Helping Rosie with her Potions” I snorted.
“Who does Potions on New Years Eve?” Chris exclaimed.
“Don’t ask me” I shook my head. I tried not to think about my cousin, and her swot-like tendencies.
Half an hour later, most of my extended family were crammed into the Burrow’s kitchen. I was smushed up against the sink, but I suppose I was better off than Fred, he was crammed in between the ancient dresser, and Uncle Percy, who, for the record, is the most boring man on the planet. The back door smashed open, and in walked Rose, and unfortunately IT. The biggest surprise had to be that Scorpius Malfoy followed close behind them. I mean, who do they think they are? You know, this thought is just too good to be kept in my head.
“Who do ye think you are?”
“James!” My mother’s voice snapped from somewhere. I think she was standing behind Uncle George.
“Rose” I beckoned impatiently “Come here”
“What?” Rose manoeuvred round Aunt Audrey (she is a big bird!), and clambered over a kitchen chair, to stand beside me.
“Would you like to explain this?” I pointed in IT’s and THAT’s direction.
“Well, Scorpius came with Jades broom so they could both fly home, because Malfoy apparated her to our house. I was just asking her would she like to come to the Burrow when he rang the doorbell. Mom was all for the both of them coming, and I couldn’t exactly say no, now could I?”
“Yes, yes you could have! Its very simple, look, I’ll go tell them to go home right now!”
Unfortunately, Mom had managed to edge around Uncle George, and was standing before me, hands on hips.
“You will do nothing of the sort James Sirius Potter! Now, you going to be perfectly civil while they are here, or else!”
Louis and I had avoided each other since the disaster that was the Slytherin Ball. He shrugged, and loped out the back door. Outside was like a winter wonderland, everything was covered in dazzlingly white snow. We stopped in under a barren, gnarled tree.
“Listen……” I began. I had no idea how to begin. There isn’t exactly a set of guidelines to talk to the guy you fancy, who turned out to be your cousin!
“Look Jade, I don’t want things to be awkward between us. I’m just kind of glad Mr Malfoy stopped us before……” Louis broke off awkwardly.
“Before it was too late” I finished off.
“And anyway, this just means you have to visit my house cousin” he shouldered me playfully.
“Did you tell your Mom and Dad?” I asked.
“Yeah……Mom knew there was something bothering me, and she wouldn’t leave me alone until I told her what. She’s all for getting you and Aunt Gabby to meet up”
“Not likely!” I snorted.
“I wouldn’t be so sure” He pointed towards the garden gate, where two figures stood, both who looked like my carbon copy.
“Mom! I can’t believe you didn’t tell me!” I hissed.
“I knew you’d just tell her Rosie, and we had to make sure she came!” Mom answered from where she was sitting at the table, drinking tea. My mother was addicted to tea. Uncle Harry insists she picked up the addiction while they were on the Horcrux camping trip.
“I just can’t believe it! Jade’s my cousin!” Dominique exclaimed.
“Well, in all fairness, nearly everyone’s related to us in some way” Louis chimed in.
“Not the time for your warped sense of humour Louis!” Dom snapped. “And I can’t believe you’re not shocked by this!”
“That’s ‘cause I already knew, I was there when Malfoy ‘spilled the beans’”
“I can’t believe Jade never told me” We all looked round in surprise. It was the first time since arriving that Scorpius Malfoy had said a word.
“I can’t believe she didn’t tell anyone! It must have been terrible keeping that secret all to yourself”
“Jades a blabbermouth, she can’t keep a secret for her life, she told someone, I just would like to know who” Scorpius stared stonily at the floor. I kind of felt sorry for him, he looked so angry. I walked over to the cupboard, and ignoring my mother’s protests, pulled down a bottle of firewhiskey.
You could have cut the tension in the Weasleys small, stuffy sitting room with a knife. I was sitting in a battered old armchair beside the fire, arms folded, facing my……mother and what must be my sister.
“Erm…..’ello” she said hesitantly, in a heavy French accent. I nodded curtly towards her.
“You, you look so much like me”
“Yeah, well I’ve my Dads temper, so lets keep this quick” I said cuttingly.
“Oh, yes, well I am Gabrielle, and zis eez your sister Giselle” Giselle peeked nervously through her fringe, but shot me a small smile. I couldn’t help smiling back. Gabrielle seemed to think this was an encouraging sign.
“I know you’re probably mad at me”
“Understatement of the century” I growled under my breath.
“And I know your life ‘as been ‘ard”
“You don’t know anything about my life, you chose not to be a part of it” I muttered icily. She carried on as if she hadn’t heard me.
“But if you would just give me a chance-”
This is where I snapped.
“You’re my MOTHER; I’m not supposed to have to ‘give you a chance’! You saunter in here after sixteen years, and expect everything to be fine? You come in here thinking you KNOW me? YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ME! YOU CHOSE NOT TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ME!” I shouted.
“I made a terrible mistake, but you must understand I was young! I was foolish!”
“So that makes it all ok then?” I asked scornfully.
“No! That’s not what I’m saying!”
I ignored her.
“Do you know what it’s been like; growing up knowing your mother didn’t want you? That she left her THREE WEEK OLD DAUGHTER WILLINGLY! Do you have any idea how that felt?”
“I know it’s been ‘ard”
“You know NOTHING! Where were you when, as a three year old, I was spat at in the park because of who my father was? Where were you when I was four, and Dad lost his job, so we had to move down Knockturn Alley? Where were you when I was five, and Dad got sent to prison for attempted robbery because we didn’t have enough money for food? Where were you all through my childhood where I had to wear clothes that were ten times too big for me? Where were you when I was eleven, and Dad got sent to prison for attempted robbery AGAIN because we didn’t have enough money for my school stuff, and he was too proud to ask for financial assistance? Where were you when I went to Hogwarts and I had to put up with people punching me and kicking me because I got put into Gryffindor?” My voice was shaking with barely suppressed rage “Where were you when I was thirteen, and Dad set fire to Flourish and Blotts, and all those people got burned, so as revenge SOMEONE SET FIRE TO MY BED?” I was screeching at the top of my lungs by now “WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I GOT PUT INTO THOSE FOSTER HOMES AND GOT BEATEN UP BY THE OTHER KIDS BECAUSE OF WHO I WAS? WHERE WERE YOU EVERY TIME POTTER OR ONE OF HIS CRONIES PUSHED ME DOWN THE STAIRS, OR THREW MY BROOM INTO A BONFIRE, OR DUMPED MY TRUNK INTO THE LAKE, OR TIED ME TO A TREE? WHERE?”
She just stared back at me, shocked at my outburst. I was panting heavily, my chest heaving up and down. Without realising, I had leapt up off my chair and advanced towards her. Once I had regained control of myself, I spoke again
“I think we should leave it at that” I said in a low voice, turning towards the door.
“Can, can I write to you?” A soft voice said from behind me. I turned around to see Giselle looking hopefully at me with big blue eyes.
“If you want”
“Thank you” Gabrielle answered.
"Only Giselle" I rephrased when I saw her face "For now anyway, we need to, sort some things out before we can get to that"
Without another word, I opened the door of the sitting room, and strode down the hall, into the kitchen, where everyone was sitting there, shell-shocked. Evidentially they had all heard my screaming match as well. Without saying a word, I opened the back door gently, and strode out into the yard. I walked towards the tree Louis and I had stood under a mere twenty minutes before. Even though it was only half-six, it was already beginning to get dark. That was one thing I hated about winter, the light faded so fast, and you were left with nothing but darkness. I clambered onto one of the lower branches of the tree and watched as the clouds my breath made swirled around me in the twilight.
Everyone remained silent. Fleur had gone into the other room to talk to her sister, and like the nosy eaves-droppers we were, we wanted to hear every word of it.
“Qu’est-ce que vous attendez?” Aunt Flours muffled voice said.
“Dom, Louis, translate” James said quickly.
“What did you expect” Dom said quickly.
“Elle est très en colère contre moi”
“She is very angry with me” Louis said immediately.
“N'aimeriez-vous pas être si Maman t'a fait ça?”
“Wouldn’t you be if Mama did that to you?”
They talked for a bit longer, but Louis said it was nothing to do with Jade. I chose this as my moment to slip out into the backyard. I followed the footprints towards the tree, that come spring would be covered in cherry-blossoms. She was sitting on the lowest branch. She didn’t look up when I sat down beside her.
“Was all that stuff you said……true?” I asked quietly.
“You all heard it then” she said nervously.
“It was kind of hard not to Jadie, you were shouting pretty loudly”
“Yeah” she said softly “I guess it all just came out”
“Someone……set fire to your bed?” I said in a half-strangled voice.
“Yeah…..I have a scar on my back where my clothes melted into my skin. Madam Pomfrey got rid of them best she could but…..”
“That’s……sick. Did they catch who did it?”
“No” she breathed softly. My hands balled up into fists at my sides, and I felt my jaw clench. I don’t know why, but someone getting away with hurting her, after everything she’d been through, mad me……furious.
“Are you ok?” she lifted her head and looked at me warily.
“Your lips are blue again” I unclenched my fist, and traced the bottom of her lip with my finger.
“Are they?” she whispered, closing her eyes at my touch.
“Yeah” I leaned in slowly, and kissed her softly on the lips. It wasn’t like that last time. She had been vulnerable last time, but this was on a whole new level. She looked meeker, less-confident, more breakable. I was afraid of hurting her, she felt like a delicate china doll in my grasp. I slid her gently onto my lap. She wriggled closer to me, snuggling into my jacket. I don’t know how long we stayed like this, but to be honest, I don’t care.
We eventually had to go inside. In our absence, it seemed my mother had left, and that George Weasley had succeeded in getting everyone drunk, because he, Ron Weasley and Charlie Weasley were currently singing Odo the Hero in one corner of the kitchen. Hermione, Ginny and Fleur were all giggling loudly at them. Harry Potter had fallen asleep, face down on the kitchen table, and Percy and ‘Little Miss Prim and Proper’ aka Molly, were campaigning against each other over who would become ‘Minister of the Kitchen’ much to the entertainment of the remaining adults. Fred, and most of the others were playing a game of spin the bottle (none of them seemed to realise they were all related), Scorpius and Rose were slow-dancing on top of the table, narrowly missing Harry Potters head by inches, and Lily and Lucy, who were under 16, were sitting on a kitchen counter, laughing their heads off at the scene before them. All of a sudden, Dominique let out an almighty screech.
“It’s almost twelve o’clock! Quick! Everyone out to the garden!”
“Come with me” A voice whispered in my ear. He grabbed hold of my hand, and tugged me towards the stairs
“This is breathtaking!” I exclaimed, looking out across the Devon countryside. He had taken me up to the roof, and we were both perched precariously on the edge. The danger element sort of added to the experience though, in a weird way.
“Count-down’s about to begin” he checked his watch. Echoes reached us from the garden, and I joined in the last three numbers
“Three…..Two…..One…..Happy New Year” I whispered. Suddenly, different Patronus’s shot up into the air, I could see a stag, a horse, a Jack-Russell, an otter, the list was endless. I even saw Scorpius’s fox somewhere in the mix.
“It’s a tradition, everyone has to think of something good that happened in the last year, and cast a Patronus”
“Well, I’d hate to break tradition” I joked.
We both pulled out our wands, and at almost the same moment, murmured “Expecto Patronum”
A sheep-dog and a ram soared into the night sky.
“My memory involved you” he whispered in my ear.
“Ditto” I knotted my fingers in his hair, and pulled him closer, my Patronus glowing brighter the closer I got.
