When Fred saw Hermione’s heart break right in front of his eyes, he felt his heart break too. He hated seeing her so upset. He just wanted to grab her, hug her and tell her how much he loved her.
As Fred ran up the stairs, he knew everyone was watching him. He didn’t care though; he knew they would be okay with everything.
When he reached the door to the girl’s dorm, he quickly knocked on the door softly so that the steps didn’t turn into a slide.
“Go away” came the muffled voice of Hermione.
“Hermione it’s me, Fred. Can I come in?”
“I said go away. I don’t want to see anyone.”
Fred ignored her and walked in.
Hermione was lying on her stomach, on her bed, hugging her pillow tightly. Fred walked up to her bed and sat down on the end, looking at Hermione.
They sat in silence for several minutes; the only sounds heard were those of Hermione’s sobs. After a while she stopped crying and sat up. Her eyes were red and puffy, her hair was sticking to her face and she was trying desperately to un-stick it.
She looked at Fred, studying his features.
“What?” he asked, with a smile.
“Nothing, it’s just…” she trailed off, slightly blushing and smiling.
Fred moved closer to her on the bed. He knew why she was staring; he had done the same thing to her that morning. He slowly leaned in and kissed her. Hermione was surprised but kissed him back for a few seconds before pushing him away.
“I’m sorry Fred. Can you please just go” Said Hermione, tears beginning to appear in her eyes.
Fred wanted to stay but he knew that if he wanted things to stay normal between him and Hermione he would have to leave. He slowly got up and walked to the door, closing it softly behind him. As he turned to walk down the stairs, he saw George and Ginny waiting for him.
“Well mate, how did it go?” asked George.
“Well, we kissed for five seconds then she pulled away and told me to leave” Fred replied, wondering what on earth he was going to do now.
“Obviously you’re not a good kisser” said George with a smirk on his face.
Before Fred could reply, Ginny pushed in. “What? Why?”
“I have absolutely no idea. I leaned in and kissed her, she kissed me back but then pushed me away and told me to leave.”
“And you just left? You didn’t even ask why or what was wrong?”
“I didn’t want to push it. I didn’t even tell her how I feel” replied Fred, looking back the dorm door.
As the door shut behind Fred, new tears began to stream down Hermione’s face. She still wasn’t even sure why she was crying. It didn’t make sense that Fred kissing her would make her cry like a baby, and yet here she was crying into her pillow because some guy kissed her.
Ten minutes past before she pulled herself together and got up. She tied up her hair and washed her face and slowly walked to the door. As she turned the door knob, she felt her heart pound in her chest.
As she descended the stairs, she heard the voices of her friends below. She stopped just before the door and listened. The only voices she heard were those of Harry, Neville, Ginny and Lavender.
“Hi guys” she said as she walked in and sat down on the chair next to the fire.
Harry, Neville, Ginny and Lavender exchanged looks before reciprocating the greeting.
Hermione looked at them as they went about their business. She was waiting for them to say something, but nothing came. They sat in silence for ten minutes.
Just when Hermione was about to ask Ginny if she still wanted to go and hang out, the portrait hole swung open and Fred, George and Ron entered. They were laughing and smiling until Fred saw Hermione. Then awkward silence filled the room.
Fred and Hermione stared at each other. Everyone else looked from each other to Fred and Hermione. The room froze.
Suddenly, out of nowhere and breaking the silence, Angelina came running and laughing through the portrait hole.
“Why didn’t you guys wait for me?” she asked, trying to catch her breath.
“We thought you were still behind us.” Said Ron.
“Yeah, you should have yelled out, I would have stopped.” Replied Fred as he put his arm around Angelina.
As Fred did this, Hermione’s heart broke a little.
“Oh Hermione, I heard about Viktor. I’m glad you put him back in his place. It’s a good thing he is leaving at the end of the term. How are you feeling” Angelina asked.
Hermione took a few seconds to respond, trying to piece everything together. “Yeah I’m fine thanks. Hopefully he doesn’t ask Dumbledore if he can stay longer” she said as she looked from Fred to Angelina.
Suddenly, Hermione caught George’s eyes. He looked at her with sympathy and regret. She tried to decipher the look but couldn’t work it out. Before she could say or do anything, Ginny spoke up.
“Well now that Viktor’s gone and you’re feeling better Hermione, do you want to go and hang out?” asked Ginny.
“Um, yeah okay.” Replied Hermione as she broke away from George’s face.
When Ginny and Hermione reached the Black Lake, they sat down under a tree. They sat in silence for a few moments before Ginny piped up.
“I know Fred likes you. And I know you like him back. And I also know you are wondering about what just happened.” She said.
“Is he back with Angelina?” Hermione asked.
“I don’t know. After Fred left your dorm he said he needed to clear his head. George and Ron followed him. As he walked out the portrait hole I heard him say something about regretting kissing you”
“I don’t regret it.” Hermione said, staring out at the smooth black lake.
“Then why did you push him away?” Ginny asked with a tone of sympathy and curiosity.
“I don’t know. I just felt like I was going to cry, but I don’t know why. I’m over Viktor and I have these feelings for Fred that are confusing the crap out of me. I just…”
Ginny put her arm around her best friend and rested her head on Hermione’s shoulder.
“I’m sure he just resolved his friendship with Angelina. He still has feelings for you. He was so upset when you got back with Viktor, that’s why he was acting so weird. That’s why he yelled at Viktor. That’s why he spent the night sleeping in the corridor. That’s why he kissed you.”
“Then why do I feel like he is back with Angelina. Why do I feel like he broke my heart?”
“I had no idea that you felt like that about him Hermione”
“Neither did I.”
The girls sat together in silence for a while. The sun was beginning to go down and the Forbidden Forest cast shadows across the grounds. Slowly, Ginny and Hermione wandered back to the castle for dinner.
When they entered the Great Hall, they noticed that Fred and Angelina were sitting further along by themselves. Hermione paused for a second and Ginny gave her a comforting look.
They sat down and began to fill their plates with food. Hermione didn’t eat though. Her mind was racing. She pushed her food around the plate with a fork as she looked from her group of friends to Fred and Angelina.
“I’m going back to the common room,” she said as she stood up. “See you guy’s later”
As she walked off everyone exchanged looks of worry and sympathy.
“What are we going to do now?” asked Harry.
“Yeah, Fred is now happy but Hermione is miserable” said Lavender.
“About that, what happened when Fred went for a walk?” asked Ginny, looking between George and Ron.
“We still have no idea.” Said Ron as they gazed down the table to Fred and Angelina.
