Background:   Font color:

"Mr Malfoy?" Draco gazed out of the charms classroom lazily."Mr Malfoy!" it was such a clear day outside, the sky was crystal blue, the grass blew ever so gently in the breeze yet he was stuck in charms.

"Ouch!" he shouted as Hermione nudged him sharply in the ribs with her elbow, he followed her eye line towards Professor Flitwick who was now staring down at him from his very high chair.

"I said what spell did I just demonstrate?" he asked impatiently.

"Sorry, I'm not certain sir,"

"Well pay attention more closely for the rest of the lesson please," Draco scowled and turned back to the window. How could he pay attention? It had been three days since he and Hermione had returned from Malfoy Manor and three days since their conversation with Salazar Slytherin. He sighed and thought over the night.

“Let the boy open it,” said a voice from the portrait. Hermione and Draco both looked up to see Salazar Slytherin standing alone watching them with cold eyes. They looked at each other before Draco took a deep breath and sat the book in his lap. As he untied the ribbon a silver light twisted around his wrists. A shiver ran up his spine before warmth engulfed him throughout his veins. He gently took the corner of the leather to open the book. It opened effortlessly in his lap with a burst of more silver light.

“You are the one Draco Malfoy,” Salazar Slytherin smirked.

"What do you mean, the "one”?” Hermione asked frowning.

"For nine hundred and eighty years I have waited for this moment to come. You are the one that is spoken of in the prophecy of course," he said

"What prophecy?" Draco asked setting the book aside.

“The Malfoy Prophecy of course, don't tell me you haven't heard of it!" Salazar almost laughed.

"Well of course, but it's just a rumour, an old story told to the Malfoy children," Draco frowned.

"Wait a minute what is this prophecy, if there even is one?" Hermione interrupted, sceptical of Salazar’s input. Salazar rolled his eyes and recited it perfectly.

" He is the one with the power,
The one of the flames,
The snake shall cower,
At the Malfoy’s name,
Born in the darkness
Whole with his light
Only the one with the brains
Will give him insight
Only with her can his power be true
Only with him can her brain give the clues
Together they are joined
Together they shall fight
And only together can the light beat the night."

" It's a load of rubbish, it's been told to every Malfoy child and never has it come true," Draco scoffed.

"But what exactly does it mean?" Hermione asked.

"My daughter married a Malfoy and it means that only the chosen Malfoy can end the Slytherin line which is symbolised by the snake in the prophecy," Salazar explained.

"But there are no Slytherin heirs that are alive so the prophecy can't be true," Hermione told him in her know it all way.

"None that we know of Miss Granger but that does not mean that there are none." Salazar replied. Draco sat and thought over the many times he had been told the prophecy, his parents it had seemed were willing him to believe it, to understand it. Then it came back down to one thing. The book. Salazar caught on to what Draco was thinking and began to explain.

"The book was passed down through every generation from the first known Malfoy until it came into my hands. I found that the information in it would permit the chosen Malfoy to learn to control his powers that lie in his blood to kill my bloodline. Naturally I put the book into safe hiding until you two unfortunately fell upon it. I cannot change prophecies or destinies and it seems this is no exception," The Slytherin founder scowled.

"Who was the first Malfoy? And what is this book exactly, I’ve never seen it before,” Hermione pressed for more answers. Draco rolled his eyes; of course if anybody knew what the book was it would be Hermione seeing as she practically lived in the library.

" Canicus Malfoy was the first recorded Malfoy and he was one of the many undiscovered elementals,"

"An ELEMENTAL?, he's related to an ELEMENTAL?!" Hermione shouted before Draco covers her mouth with his hand.

"Do you want all the others to hear us? What’s an elemental? And why is it getting her so damn excited?” ,

"It MEANS that he had extra powers, fire, air, water or earth but these were powers that would have come naturally to him without a use of a wand or spells. How you cannot be excited I do not know, the powers are extremely rare" Hermione explained quickly before Salazar could.

"Correct Miss Granger. Canicus was a fire elemental, one of the first unrecorded and he passed down that book to his children with the hope that one of his descendants would also be an elemental. For many years it remained unused in the Malfoy family until my daughter married into the Malfoy family. A travelling seer told her that bad things would come of Slytherin and Malfoy blood mixing and then placed a curse in the book before the prophecy was made. It allows only the Malfoy with the elemental power in his blood to open the book and end the Slytherin line.,"

"So what you're saying- "

"is that Draco is the next"

"Malfoy elemental?" Draco finished.

"Correct," Salazar nodded.

He stared at the clouds that were slowly forming in thin wisps against the blue sky. Him, an elemental. He had spent the rest of the evening with Hermione reading through the book. She had been a quicker reader than him and often wanted to turn the page earlier, typical. By three o'clock in the morning they had finished the book and sat down in silence. It contained diagrams, explanations and a Malfoy family tree up until Salazar had the book. He was the first Malfoy elemental descendent in nearly one thousand years and yet he didn't even know what it was he was destined to do. The Prophecy referred to the defeat of the snake, the Slytherin heir but after Voldemort there were no others. Then there was the part referring to another person with brains that was needed to help him. Could that be Hermione? Or some other witch maybe a Malfoy cousin?

Hermione watched Draco’s brow furrow, clearly in deep thought. She didn’t need to ask what about because the same topic had been on her mind for the last three days. He should be happy to have that power yet he was worrying as was she over whether the prophecy was entirely true. Nobody knew of a second Slytherin heir so where were they supposed to start? Hermione knew where she would have gone. She had attempted countless times to persuade Draco to go and speak to Miss McGonagall and Dumbledore but he straight out refused. They might know something, but neither of them would find out unless they spoke to the headmistress. Hermione sighed and looked out of the same window as Draco. Shadows fell underneath the trees surrounding the lake but there was no mistaking the red head that she saw sat on the grass. She sat alone for a few minutes before Hermione saw another figure join her. Draco seemed to be watching them as well as he squinted his eyes in attempt to see who was with the red head.

“Class dismissed!” Professor Flitwick called and Hermione instantly jumped out of her chair to the window. Her nose almost touched the window as she narrowed her eyes against the sun.  Draco joined her and looked out of the window with curiosity. The couple leaned into kiss before they stood up and began to walk towards the school. Hermione gasped.

“Is that Ginny?” Draco asked with his mouth open

“And is that-“

“Blaise,” Hermione grinded her teeth together. She stormed out of the classroom towards the entrance hall. If Harry wasn’t going to confront her then Hermione would. She saw the couple enter the school laughing but just as Hermione one was about to shout a hand covered her mouth and pulled her into an alcove. She struggled to break free but the person still held her against them strongly. Ginny and Blaise walked past the alcove without a glance and Hermione began to scratch at the hand covering her mouth. The laughter died away and she knew that she had lost all hope of catching up to Ginny. She glared and bit the palm of the hand.

“Ouch! Merlin Hermione you didn’t have to bite me!” she heard the male voice. She turned around and came face to face with Draco.

“You saw them! Why did you stop me!” she shouted and hit his chest multiple times with her fist. He didn’t complain, he just stood there rock solid sucking the small amount of blood from his palm. “She’s cheating on my best friend! He should know who with!” she made a move to punch his chest again but he grabbed her wrist.

“Exactly, Potter should know. Don’t you think you should tell him first before you go around cursing people? It’s best if you just talk to the people that need to know these things,” he said calmly. She glared at him in the dim light of the alcove.

“You bloody hypocrite!”

“Excuse me?” he asked unaware of how this had anything to do with him.

“ It’s best if you just talk to the people that need to know these things,” she mimicked. “Miss McGonagall is somebody that needs to know about your...thing! So why won’t you just talk to her?” she challenged. He had walked right into this one.

“Well that’s just....You see....It’s a completely different situation!” he whined.

“Oh no you don’t! Elemental powers are much more serious that a cheating girlfriend! Now if you won’t go and speak to the Headmistress then I will!” she stomped her foot. Draco didn’t even think girls did that, especially Hermione.

“I know you won’t betray my trust Hermione so I’m certain you won’t say anything,” he smirked.

“Oh yeah? Then you don’t know me” her mouth set in a straight line. He laughed at her serious face before walking away.

“I’ll see you in Genealogy!” he called to her. She mumbled to herself about what he had said, won’t say anything, sure I’ll prove you wrong Draco Malfoy she thought to herself. It wasn’t exactly betraying him, it was all for the better in the end. She nodded to herself and headed towards the Headmistresses office.

Draco sat down in the common room for a break before Genealogy started in the afternoon. He sighed and rested his head in his hands. His life was a chaos right now, school work, prefect duties, the fundraising, the Malfoy Estate and now a prophecy supposedly come true because of him.

“Why me?” he mumbled just before the portrait opened and Blaise walked in with a grin.

“Alright Draco,” he nodded before heading to the fridge, Draco watched him sit down with a Butterbeer.

“You idiot Blaise,” he shook his head.

“What did I do?” he asked unsure. Draco looked at him and contemplated telling him.

“Ginny?! Of all the girls you go for Potter’s girlfriend!” he began to raise his voice.

“YOU KNOW?!” Blaise shouted. “Look man you can’t tell Ginny you know or Harry or anyone!” he began to pace around the room.

“Well that’s your problem Blaise, Harry already knows Ginny is seeing somebody else behind his back,” Draco tried to say calmly.

“WHAT?! No I would be dead if he knew,” he collapsed on the sofa.

“After a lot of bribery Hermione finally told me that he saw you two but he didn’t know it was you. Hermione and I however saw you both quite clearly this morning so if I were you it would be Hermione I avoid,”

“I’m dead; this is the end of my life. Draco tell my parents that no matter how much we argued I loved them really,” he sighed and groaned into a pillow.

“Sorry mate but this is your problem,” Draco patted his back and sat down next to him.

Just do it Hermione, she thought to herself as she stood outside the entrance to the Headmistress’ office. But what if Draco had another reason for not wanting Miss McGonagall to know? What if he didn’t want to have anything to do with her after this? No, she thought. This was for his safety as well as others if there truly was another heir of Slytherin in the world. She took a deep breath and walked into the office. She instantly sought out Dumbledore’s portrait for a reassuring face and was not disappointed as he beamed down and greeted her. Unfortunately Snape was also occupying his own portrait as well.

“Just a moment Miss Granger,” the Headmistress said as she finished writing a letter. Hermione took a seat in front of the desk and waited patiently. “Now then what can I do for you Miss Granger?” Hermione took a deep breath and began to explain. She was stopped several times by the Headmistress telling her to slow down and breath. She didn’t know how long she was in there but it seemed like hours. Hermione left out the fact that she had Salazar Slytherins journal, she didn’t want it to be taken from her. After her explanation nobody reacted, all the portraits were silent until Miss McGonagall spoke up in barely a whisper.

“Professor Dumbledore could you please visit you portrait in the corridor and see if you could get a student to go directly to the Great Hall. They are to ask Professor Periwinkle to allow Mr Malfoy to visit me at once,” Dumbledore nodded and left the portrait, next to him even Snape was speechless.

When Draco had not seen Hermione enter the Great Hall for Genealogy to say he was worried was an understatement. Hermione never missed classes and he hadn’t seen her since they witnessed Ginny and Blaise. So when a second year Hufflepuff ran into the hall saying Draco was needed immediately in the Headmistress’ office he began to panic. He half ran to the office and up the stone steps before he burst into the office.

“Hermione! Are you okay?! What’s wrong?! Why weren’t you in class?!” he panted. He looked at her sat in the chair and noticed that nothing was physically wrong. He looked at the portraits and the headmistress straight faces and then back to Hermione.

“I’m sorry Draco,” she whispered and he thought he saw tears beginning to glisten in her eyes and then he realised.

“You told them?! How could you Hermione?!” he shouted but regretted it. The tears began to fill her eyes as sadness and fear crossed her face. “I trusted you not to tell anybody!” he sighed as she sniffed. “It was my secret Hermione!” and that did it as the tears began to fall down her face. “Oh come here,” he gave up and pulled her from her chair and into a hug. “You always were too stubborn for your own good, I should have known you would say something eventually,” he stroked her hair as she cried into his shirt.

“Don’t hate me,” she whispered.

“Hermione I don’t hate you, that’s absurd,” he chuckled. He was suddenly aware of the eyes watching them, some with sympathy and others with shock at their closeness. Snape cleared his throat from his portrait and Hermione eventually pulled away, drying her eyes.

“Mr Malfoy I understand why you may not have wanted to share this information but it is of the utmost importunacy that we research this matter,” Dumbledore’s portrait said.

“What do you mean by, “research this matter”?” he asked.

“Yourself and Miss Granger are going on a mission with the Order members,” Snape said bluntly. Hermione and Draco looked at him in shock, never before had the teenage order members been allowed on missions, even Draco knew that from the press.

“You will both be visiting the Department of Mysteries, undercover, where you will be searching the newly restored Prophecy room. You are to search for the second half of a prophecy....the second half of the Malfoy prophecy,” Dumbledore finished.

“SECOND HALF?!” Hermione and Draco shouted together.

“You heard correctly, it is Dumbledore’s belief that that was only one part of a prophecy. You will also no long be attending Genealogy in the Great Hall. Instead you will both be coming here to research the family history of Voldemort and the rest of the Slytherin family trees. Mr Malfoy you will also be spending some of that time learning of your elemental powers,” The headmistress told them both. Hermione sat in silence thinking over everything that had been said, this was all going to be dangerous she just knew it.

“I hope you understand that nobody can know about any of this. As far as everybody else is concerned you are both doing extra credit work, you may leave. I understand this must be all very overwhelming,” Dumbledore smiled with his twinkling eyes.

Hermione and Draco left in silence both too shocked to say anything. A mission with the order, but why were they going? Hermione walked along the cold corridors deep in thought. The next few months were going to be hectic. She still had the Casino night to organise and now this. So much for her final year being only about her school work. Now she was amongst more drama and mysteries. Next to her Draco was thinking along the same lines. His family leaving had been a big enough problem and now he was facing a new family inheritance, a new and rare power. He sighed and walked through the portrait after Hermione. Going back to the common room was a bad idea. All the Genealogy partners sat working on their family trees and the minute Hermione saw Ginny and Blaise laughing, she burst.

“Hermione-“ Draco began reaching for her arm.

“GINEVRA WEASLEY!” Hermione shouted at the top of her voice.

“Oh dear,” Draco whispered and he noticed Blaise’s face pale if that was possible. Ginny just looked shocked.

“What’s wrong Hermione?” She asked confused.

“WHAT’S WRONG?! I’ll tell you what’s bloody wrong!” she began walking towards her with her wand out just as Harry stood up.

“Hermione, please don’t unless you know who it is then don’t say any-“ Harry began but Hermione cut him off.

“Oh I know who it is Harry! I SAW who it was,” she growled and Harry’s face seemed to drop.

“What is going on?!” Ginny raised her voice.

“How could you Ginny? How could you hurt Harry like this? And of all the people you choose that Slytherin?!” Hermione shouted nodding towards Blaise.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ginny said innocently.

“Blaise?” Harry whispered, the hurt clearly written across his face. The other Seventh years and Luna looked thoroughly confused. “I knew you were seeing somebody behind my back but...him?” he asked.

“What the bloody hell is going on?!” Ron interrupted.

“I’ll tell you what is going on? Your darling sister here has been cheating on Harry with Blaise!” Hermione growled.

“No, you’ve got it wrong! Ginny wouldn’t do that! Would you Ginny?” Ron looked at his sister and was shocked. Blaise held her hand tightly as the tears began to fill her eyes.

“Harry I’m so sorry,” she began to say but Harry didn’t seem to be fully with it. He shook his head in disappointment and walked as if in a dream, or in this case a nightmare, up to his room. Ron went after him whilst Ginny ran from the room with Blaise following her. The others soon departed the room after the drama. No doubt Pansy would be discussing the dramatic events with Hannah and Padma. After some soothing words to Hermione, Draco headed up to his room to try and get some sleep whilst Hermione did the same.

Hermione woke up suddenly to the sound of somebody walking around the Head boy and girl’s common room. She glanced at her alarm clock; 3:15. It couldn’t be Neville, somebody was in the common room uninvited. She looked around her in alarm, unsure of what to do. She grabbed her wand, slid out of her bed and snuck towards her door. She took a deep breath and walked into the pitch black common room. She stood silently listening to the heavy breathing of somebody walking around.

“Who’s there?” she asked shakily. She walked forward straight into somebody, before she could scream the lights came on and there stood Draco with very ruffled hair, tired eyes and a blanket wrapped around him. “You almost gave me a heart attack!” she whispered, not wanting to wake Neville.

“Sorry,” he mumbled .

“What are you doing here?” she asked and sat down on the sofa.

“Ron has been the up since midnight yelling at Blaise, I can’t handle it Hermione! I need sleep!” he groaned and collapsed down next to her. “Can I sleep on your sofa?” he asked, already drifting  into sleep. She chuckled at the sight but found herself yawning as well.

“Don’t be silly you can have my bed, I’ll sleep on the sofa,” she whispered as she rubbed her eyes.

“No you’re being silly,” he said sleepily with his eyes closed.

“Not,” she replied.

“Fine, neither of us will sleep in your bed,” he sighed and pulled her towards him. Wrapping the blanket around them both they fell asleep.
