Hey readers :) Sorry for the long wait but I'm back! Be sure to read the A/N after the chapter. A warning, this chapter isn't as long as usual at all but that's explained in the A/N.
When the song is mentioned in the chapter, do listen to it and let it play with the text- it's a lovely song and one of my favourites and the lyrics actually really amazing (: And read the text slowly don't rush it- stop in places where it requires- try and meet the music with the text.
Hermione pushed behind her chair and placed her plate in the sink before moving past Draco to go help Aaron get dressed for his outing with a couple of kids from the neighborhood. Before she could manage getting past him, his arm shot out and he grabbed her wrist.
She stopped dead in her tracks but refused to turn around to look at him.
"Granger, can you please turn around?" He asked, his voice soft and tired.
She didn't respond. She didn't know how to. She didn't know whether she wanted to. This whole situation was frustrating her! It was angering her! It was... confusing her. And she didn't like it at all.
"Granger, please", He said.
"Let me go, Malfoy", She said and to her immense shock, her voice cracked and broke.
She heard him push his chair behind and stand up, his hand still holding her wrist lightly.
"Tell me why you're avoiding me like plague since morning. What did I do?" He asked.
She blinked back tears. "I dont know what you did. Just let go of me. I need to think."
"Think about what?" He asked, a little nervous that she was on the verge of crying.
"Everything. Im so tired..." She admitted, a tear falling down her cheek. She wiped at it hastily.
"Did I do something wrong? Did I say something wrong? Im sorry I didn't dance with you last night, I really am. I was- I dont know what came over me." He said, trying to turn her around but she wouldn't budge. "Is that why you left last night?"
"I was tired so I left", She choked out.
"I'm sorry", He whispered. "Please just talk to me again."
"Im talking to you right now", She said, refusing to look at him while tears streamed down her cheeks for no apparent reason.
"Not like this. I mean talk properly. I only have you in this Other Reality, Granger", Draco said. "I- I cant afford to lose you."
"Oh so you want me because there's nobody else?" She spat bitingly.
"That's not what I meant!" He exclaimed. "And will you turn around? Im tired of talking to your back!" He grabbed her shoulders and spun her around. She wiped her face with her sleeve and looked at him.
"Are you sure that's not what you meant? You seemed pretty content without my company last night."
He took a step behind and an expression of hurt crossed his face. "I'm sorry about last night. I wanted to dance with you, I did. But I couldn't-"
"Couldn't what?" She asked, anger in her voice. "Im sick of this! Im sick of being here! Im sick of trying to be someone else! Im sick of feeling so helpless! Im sick of you! I just want to go home!" She closed her eyes and took a steadying breathe. A warm hand came to cup her cheek but she didn't open her eyes. Draco moved his thumb across her cheek, wiping away her tears.
"I know. I know you do. I know you're tired. But-" He stopped mid-sentence as she shook her head and stepped away from him.
"But we're stuck here. I dont want to be stuck here anymore", She said, taking another step behind. "I just want to go home." She turned and walked away from him. Draco sighed and ran a frustrated hand through his har while sitting down. How was he going to make it up to her? It wasn't like he could just go back in time and ask her to dance and make the night special for her.
He sat up straighter. That's it!
* * *
"Aaron!" Hermione called, looking into his room and seeing it empty. Where was that boy?! "Aaron Malfoy, you come here this instant!" She was about to call for him once again when Draco's deep voice stopped her.
"He's gone to Ginny's for the night."
"Why would he-" She froze where she was on the top step of the stairs as she looked at their living room. The light had been turned off and candles floated around. Draco stood at the foot of the stairs, a nervous expression on his face.
"Too cheesy?" He asked.
"What- Why- What-" She stuttered. What the hell was going on...
"The only way to make it up to you would be giving you the night you deserved. The night I messed up for you." He waved his wand to the left side and music began playing. Hermione's breathe caught in her throat as she recognized the song almost immediately. It was "Look After You" by The Fray.
"Dance with me?" He asked as she took a step down. He held his hand out to her and she looked at it wearily.
"I- I dont know- I mean-"
"Just dont think so much. It's a simple yes or no question and I really hope it's not the latter you answer with", He said, his eyes pleading with her. She walked towards him and took his hand in answer. He led her backwards to the center of their living room which he had cleared and pulled her into a dance embrace.
"I'm sorry", He whispered. She didn't say anything and instead rested her head on his chest.
"I'm wearing all the wrong clothes for a situation like this", She said softly, smiling slightly. She was dressed in black capris and a white three-fourth sleeves top. He wasn't any better- dressed in beige shorts and a light blue polo.
He chuckled and it reverberated through his chest. "That's all you have to say?"
"I forgive you", She said, her grip tightening around his neck and on his hand as he moved in a circle.
"I can't believe I actually did this", He said, laying his cheek against the top of her head. "I've never done something so bloody cheesy and romantic."
"Romantic, huh?" She teased but her stomach did a flip when he said the word. Was he trying to be romantic?
"You know what I mean", He said. "It's completely un-Draco. It's something more Weasley."
She laughed against his chest. "I didn't know Draco and Weasley were adjectives."
He smiled. "I've really never done something like this."
"Thank you for it, it's perfect." She said.
They just moved in silence for a few long seconds, drowning in the music until Hermione spoke.
"I'm sorry about what I said earlier. They way I acted, that is." His eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. She had only spoken her mind.
"I'm tired, yes. But I'm not sick of being here. I'm not sick of you..."
"I know". She raised her head and narrowed her eyes at him.
"Someday your head is going to burst with that oversized ego of yours", She said, shaking her head.
He smiled at her cheekily. "Sorry."
"Anyway, as I was saying- I'm only tired. I do want to go home but in a way, this has become home. Our home. I never thought this would ever be possible. And if it would be, that I would- that I would actually like it."
"Me neither", He said softly. She looked at him and saw honesty in his eyes. He actually liked it here? With her?
"Do you think this Other Reality is real?" She asked and they stopped moving but didn't step away from each other as they music went on.
"I honestly don't know", He shook his head. He then asked her something that made her freeze. "Do you want it to be?"
She looked up to meet his eyes and they were boring into her with an inexplicable intensity.
"Do you?" She answered the question with her own.
He shrugged. "I wouldn't mind."
Something happened with her heart right there and she found it difficult to breathe for a few seconds. His voice echoed in her mind. 'I wouldn't mind.'
"You wouldn't mind spending the rest of your life with Muggleborn know-it-all me?"
He looked into her eyes and asked, "Would you mind spending the rest of your life with arrogant pureblooded me?"
She smiled softly and admitted, "I wouldn't mind."
"This is weird", He said as they resumed moving with the music.
"Very", She chuckled. "But it's a nice kind of weird."
"A nice kind of weird?"
"Yes. A weird that I've gotten used to. A weird that I dont mind at all. A nice kind of weird."
"It explains us perfectly."
"It does, doesn't it? We're a Nice Kind Of Weird."
"I wouldn't have it any other way." He said, bringing his face close to her's and leaning his forehead against her's. Her breathe hitched in her throat and her heart was thundering so hard against her ribcage, she wondered if he could hear it.
What was he saying? What was this?
"Stop thinking so much. Just enjoy the moment, will you, Granger? It's not everyday I go out of my ways just to gain forgiveness."
"You're doing this only for forgiveness? Not because you want to?" She asked, closing her eyes.
"I'm doing it for both", He said. "You're making me soft, you know that?"
"Is that a good thing?"
"You tell me?"
"I like it."
"Then sure, I guess", He said, his eyes closed as well.
"If somebody had told me a few weeks ago that I would be standing in the middle of my future home's living room dancing with Hermione Granger in my arms and our kid in Potter's house, I would've suggested that they go check their heads in the St.Mungo's mental ward."
"Do you regret wishing for what you did?"
"I wouldn't want any other answer."
A thought suddenly struck her and her eyes flew open. "Malfoy, you wished that I had a child that ended up wanting to kill me..."
He opened his eyes and took a deep breathe. "I feel so stupid. Why did I even have to open my mouth that day?"
"I thought you didn't regret wishing."
"I don't regret being sent here- I regret what I wished for you. You dont deserve the things I said."
"But what do you think it's about? The child thing? What do you think will happen?"
"I dont know... But whatever happens, I know that we'll make it through it. No matter what."
"You have a lot of faith in us."
He leant his head once again against her's and they closed their eyes. Hermione sung along with her favorite line of the song- "What's mine is your's to leave or take, what's mine is your's to make your own." She smiled and then asked, "How did you know I liked this song?"
"I had a little help from Ginny", He said, grinning sheepishly though she couldn't see.
"This really couldn't have been more perfect", She said, sighing contentedly.
"We couldn't have been more perfect", It slipped out of Draco's mouth before he could stop it, before he could even think. Hermione's eyes opened and she looked at him but he had his eyes still closed, as if he hadn't said anything out of the ordinary. Hermione swallowed hard. What was going on? She knew one thing for sure and it involved feelings and the boy standing in front of her.
She let her eyes drop shut again and pushed away all thoughts from her mind, intent on enjoying the moment. She was able to push away her thoughts but not the fluttering feeling in her heart.
Wow. I'm so sorry for one, the late update and second, the short chapter. I had a bad writer's block for a while and have been going through a difficult time so I really am sorry guys. By the way, I had a phenomenal song suggestion from one of my reviewers- Tanya- the song is Gone Away by SafetySuit and it's absolutely AMAZING and fits The Other Reality so perfectly, I can't stop listening to it.
The song in the story as mentioned was, Look After You by The Fray.
So that's it for this round and what do you think of Hermione's development, in fact the whole development in their relationship? Is it finally getting somewhere?
