I looked at the face Rose made. It was shock, sadness, anger, and even a little fear mixed in. I couldn’t help but feel some of the same things, the sadness and the fear. Fear of life wouldn’t be with Rose. I mean, she was practically my sister. We bonded. A lot. I wasn’t quite sure I was ready to give that up. We had one hell of a friendship. Sure, we quarreled quite a bit, but we always made up within 48 hours. I loved her like family, and she loved me the same way.
Then the tears started to fall from her face. First very slowly and hard to recognize, but then large drops of water were spilling from her eyes. I immediately enveloped her in a hug. It’s what a best friend would do. She sobbed in my arms for 20 minutes before pulling away from my embrace.
“If we aren’t friends, we shouldn’t be hugging” she said very blandly. It was those words that made me truly realize what was happening. I might never speak to Rose Weasley. She started to turn away, but I grabbed her hand.
“You know what?” I said, “Only remember half of what I just said. We can’t speak to each other as long as Vivian’s around. Our friendship is worth more than this girl. I think we should clearly still be friends. I value your friendship. If it’s okay with you, I would love to meet you in secret. We could meet as often as you want. We’ll go into the Room of Requirement and just talk. Vivian would never know. I’ll tell her I’m bathing in the Prefect’s bathroom or doing patrol. She actually thinks I’m patrolling now.”
I said this all very fast. I was scared that she wouldn’t have understood me and I’d have to repeat it. I could see her processing the words that had just come out of my mouth. She started to nod, the squealed.
“Oh Scorpius! I was so scared I would never get to talk to you again! I thought our friendship was over! I thought you’d let Vivian control you, but you proved me wrong! Just like you did in first year! I thought you’d be a bad kid but you weren’t!” She said this even faster than I did, but I could still understand her. It was like a special connection we had.
“I’m still going to date her, but I didn’t want to have to choose between the two of you. In fact, there’s no way I could choose.”
“There’s no way I could ever make you pick” she said, and then she did something totally unexpected. She kissed me on the cheek. It was quick, but my cheek burned as soon as her lips brushed it. I found myself blushing. I, Scorpius Malfoy, the guy who always keeps his cool, had a pink twinge on his cheeks. But that was nothing compared to Rose. Her entire face was a deep maroon. I smiled slightly. “Well, I’ve still got half an hour to kill, wanna have our first secret conversation?” She simply giggled and led me to the Room of Requirement.
“Okay, favorite color?” I asked her. “Olive green.” She replied. “I have little specks of it in my eyes and I really like them. What’s yours?” “Orange” I answered. “It’s fun, bright, and happy. And you asked the same question back, so it’s your turn.”
Rose and I had been playing the questions game for ten minutes, and realized how little we knew each other. Every question so far had been trivial, though. I decided I wanted to ask more than that. Rose seemed like someone who was more than just a face, and I wanted to get to know her. And apparently, she did too.
“Have you ever had sex?” she asked me. “No.” I answered, and she gave me a look. It was an ‘I know you’re bullshitting’ look. “Well I mean I’ve received a hand job and a blow job before, but never all the way. Have you?” I got another look. But this was more of an ‘are you kidding?’ look.
“With the zero boyfriends I’ve had since fourth year? Definitely.” She said sarcastically. “Just making sure.” I said with a wink. “Umm… why haven’t you had any boyfriends since fourth year?” She frowned. “Nobody’s ever asked me really. Except for Steven Kearns, and I’d never say yes to that.”
“The really ugly, nerdy, Head Boy asked you out?” I asked in surprise. “Yeah, last year.” She said laughing. Steven Kearns was one of those boys that spent all of his free time in the library. No wonder he gets such good marks.
“Your turn” Rose said. “Umm, who do you like?” I asked. What a typical question. “I don’t really pay attention to boys. James and Al make sure of that. But I don’t know, I feel like I’m too good of friends with possible candidates. And this might sound weird, but most of my cousins are better looking than quite a few of the guys here. And I’d ask you, but the answer would obviously be Vivian. So how about this: how have you and Vivian dated for so long?”
Oh no. This is the one question I had been hoping Rose wouldn’t ask. But, as fate would have it, she asked. I wasn’t quite sure I could tell her the truth. You see, my dad and Vivian’s mom have been friends for a long time. After a one night stand had gotten Vivian’s mother Millicent pregnant by Blaise Zabini around the same time my mum was pregnant with me, Millicent and decided to keep the pureblood family line going. So they arranged for me and Vivian to date all through Hogwarts, and then get married. This upset mum quite a bit, and her a dad had a huge row about it. My mum wanted me to date and marry whoever I wanted. But dad won the argument, so I’m stuck with Vivian. She’s still really into the relationship, but I’ve resented it since third year. I couldn’t tell Rose this, though. It’s a very big secret. Very hush-hush.
“Umm, we both really like each other?” I told her, but the words sounded bloody fake coming out of my mouth. I received the ‘quit bullshitting’ look again. “C’mon, Scorp.” You and I both know that’s not true. I can tell by the way you said it. So what’s really going on?” The way she said it sounded like she was genuinely concerned, not just looking for gossip. So, figuring she’d keep the secret, I told her the whole story.
“Oh Scorp,” she said while hugging me, “I’m so sorry you have to deal with that. I wouldn’t be able to do it if it were me. Have you even looked at another girl wanting to be more than friends?” I thought about for a second, then realized that no, I’ve never even thought about dating anyone else. Vivian would have my head. Frankly, I’m surprised she let me stay friends with Rose for so long. “No.” I answered.
“That’s too bad,” she said. “Aren’t our teenage years supposed to be about having fun? Goofing around with the opposite sex? Pretending like we knew what we were doing in those broom cupboards even when we didn’t know shit? Have you ever had an experience like that?”
What, did she think I was as innocent as a first year? Didn’t I just tell her that I had received both a hand job and a blow job? Granted, both were from Vivian and neither were very enjoyable (I don’t find her attractive, how could I enjoy them?), but Rose made it seem like I’d never even had an enjoyable snogging session (I’d had one with Vivian in second year).
Okay, so maybe I hadn’t done as much as most guys my age. But it’s not like I’m one of those ‘no touching until marriage’ people. But Rose’s speech made me wonder where Rose would have learned what that was like. “How would you know?” I asked her.
She gave me a saucy smile. “Let’s just say I’m not the only one who has fumbled around in a broom cupboard, Scorpius.” I chuckled. “Hogwarts should really lock those things.” I told her. “Who’d you go in there with?” “Cameron Walker.” She answered nonchalantly. “Cameron Walker?!? The tool?! The guy who only did one night stand before he met Laurel?! That Cameron Walker?!” I never knew that Rose was into the one night stand deal. Even if I was single I wouldn’t be into that. But whatever. The heart wants what it wants, I guess.
“No, the other Cameron Walker.” Rose replied sarcastically. “But no, really, we did spend one night in there together when I was in fifth year.” “How far did you go?” The question slid out of my mouth. I didn’t mean to ask it. It’s none of my business, really. “He fingered me.” She answered with a straight face. She didn’t seem really ecstatic about it, but she didn’t seem like she regretted it either. It just happened to her, I guess. I nodded.
“Whose turn is it anyway? You know, for the game?” Rose asked me. “Umm… I don’t know.” I answered truthfully. We had both just asked questions and I wasn’t keeping track. “You can go.” Rose told me. I decided. That this was the best time to ask the question that had been burning inside of me since we first started the game.
“Why’d you kiss me on the cheek after I told you my decision about the whole deal with Vivian?” I asked her. Hey, I was curious!
“Well…” she said as she carefully chose her words. “When you first told me that we couldn’t be friends, I thought about what life would be like without you. But then you said we’d still be friends, and euphoria came over me. I was so happy. And I guess I was so happy that you’d do that for me, I got carried away”
“I see.” I said, and I nodded. “My turn.” Rose said. “Why haven’t you stood up to everyone and broken up with Vivian if you weren’t happy with her?” She seemed to know this was making me uncomfortable. Damn, how could she know I didn’t want to talk about it? “Because my family would have my head on a platter. They’ve planned my whole life out for me. I’ll marry Vivian, get a respectable job at the Ministry, and have pureblood children. There’s no Plan B, that’s just how my life will be. If I try to rebel, there will be severe consequences. As much as I’d love to dump Vivian, there’s no way out.”
Rose gave me a mischievous grin. “What if she’s the one who dumps you, though?” “Fat chance that’ll ever happen. She’s head-over-heels in love with me.” I told her matter-of-factly. It was true! She follows me around like a lost puppy most of the time! “But what if she caught you cheating on her?” Rose asked me. “If you could get me out of this, I’d always be grateful. What do you have in mind?” I asked eagerly.
I heard the clock in the Room of Requirement strike one. Vivian would be wondering where I was. Of course, I had to leave just as Rose offered me this amazing idea. “I better go.” Rose told me. “Dom’s probably up wondering where I am. And no one wants to deal with a cranky Dom in the morning.” “Same for me except with Vivian.” I told her. We both got up to leave.
As we exited the Room of Requirement, Rose turned to me. “Scorp,” she said, “If I were you, I’d figure out who I fancied before Vivian dumps you. Once you’re single, girls will probably slip you love potions like it’s their job. See you tomorrow night at midnight right here to plan your getting dumped?” I nodded. She started to walk away.
I thought about what she had just said. I decided to start looking at girls like potential girlfriends. And since Rose was the only girl with me at the time, I started with her. So when she turned around for one last wave, I took in her beauty. And man, was she beautiful. Add that to her killer personality and the way I felt when she kissed me, and I’ve got the perfect girlfriend.
Wait a second. Did I just use the word girlfriend while thinking about Rose Weasley? Do I fancy her? I knew the answer to both of those questions was yes. Oh Merlin.
