Shit! That blood traitor Weasley HAD to ruin everything!! Luckily Hermione thought fast.
"Malfoy! Give me my book! Let GO!"
She yanked on her book, making it look like she had ripped it out of my hand. I muttered a quick shield charm for her, then shoved her over.
"It's my book, Mudblood. But you can keep it. Now it's...contaminated." I arrogantly said with a smirk. I sauntered away, heading to my dorm. Weasley got in my face and yelled at me.
"Cockroach! Leave her alone!"
I ignored him and left. I really hoped she got that I was acting. The look of pain and misery on her face as I shoved her down was almost unbearable. She was acting too, I hoped, as the look of pure unadulterated rage that came after was a bit scary. I heard her screaming at Weasel to leave her common room, and never look at her again. It was funny! I still felt bad for shoving her though.
Soon I got tired, and prepared for bed. I took my usual 30 minute shower, and got into my nightwear. I climbed under the covers and tried my best to chase down sleep, even if for only an hour, but to no avail. My brain just kept going and going. I fell asleep after about 2 hours of just laying there. My dreams reflected my thoughts: jumbled and chaotic. I woke up at about 4 in the morning, way early for me, to the sound of my door creaking. In the doorway was Hermione in her pjays. She snuck in, placed an envelope on my nightstand, and went to leave. I snuck an arm around her waist and pulled her into the bed with me.
"And what do you think you're doing in MY room at this late hour?" I asked teasingly. She picked up the envelope and threw it at my face, laughing the whole while. I guess she wasn't mad at me. We wrestled around for a minute as I tried to pin her down and tickle her, and she tried to escape the bed. She finally got away, and sat on the edge of the bed. I waved the letter at her.
"And what is this?"
She said, "Well, I was sorry for snapping at you and glaring while Ronald was here. He's dating the Gossip Queen, and that would be top of the charts. I didn't want people to assume too much, or anything like that. So I wrote you a letter. I figured you could read it when you woke up, and then you'd understand."
I smiled. "It's fine. I was worried you'd be mad at me for shoving you. Im glad you're not." I pulled her down next to me on the bed. She was soft and warm in my arms, and smelled nice. Hermione smelled like a mix of strawberries and citrus, but today she had a faint hint of chocolate.
She lay down beside me in bed and all I could think about was her. She was truly beautiful, and I was regretful for missing out on 3 years worth of this. I think I fell asleep because the next thing I remember was groggily feeling her shake me and tell me to get up. I got up and took my shower, then let her take hers. We prepared and got ready for the day before us. Neither of us knew what the Weasel had told everybody, so neither of us knew what to expect. She and I agreed to just play along, whichever way he decided to tell the story. I didn't like that very much, but I saw why we agreed to it.
We walked into the Great Hall about 5 minutes apart, me first. The second I walked in, all eyes were on me. The girls, all the girls, even some Slytherins, were glaring at me. The Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw boys seemed to all be glaring too, with the Slytherins looking proud and impressed. I went in and sat in my usual spot next to Blaise. He and I talked through breakfast, and I managed to extract the whole story of what Weasel had told everyone.
According to him, I was attacking Hermione with my bare hands, and shooting spells every once in a while. I had her trapped on the ground, but she shot an amazing spell and blasted me backwards, then ran for her room. Once I left, he went up to talk to her, and when he found her nude she screamed at him to get out; that's why she's mad at him. What a load of bullshit. I had known the story would be bad, but not THAT bad. Blaise told me he didn't believe the rubbish, that he knew I had let Hermione leave because if bruises showed then I'd be screwed. I felt nauseous.
Everyone gasped as Hermione walked in on Weaselettes arm. She was walking shaky and slowly, but managed to get to her seat in time to hide her face. She looked at me from across the room and looked away again quickly as I saw her . That's where it clicked for me. She was pretending I had hurt her, so maybe she didn't have to answer too many questions. She was smart, but there was one flaw in her plan: Hermione was a fireball. There was no way in hell that she was just gonna bow her head and take this. I had to get the message to her somehow. I decided to take the initiave. I strolled over to the Gryffindor tad and plopped myself down right next to her. I put my arm around her and smirked.
"So Mud-Girl, how's the face?"
She looked up at me with hurt in her eyes. God, I hoped that was fake. "Fine thank you!" She shoved me backwards off the bench. I grabbed onto the back of Weasels robes to stay up, forcing him on the ground. Hermione glared at me. "Malfoy, just go. Nobody wants you here. Leave."
I knew it was fake. I told myself that a hundred times. And yet, it still left a empty slot in my heart. She glanced at me, and I realized that my robes had vanished. I was in my underwear standing next to the Gryffindors. I made a hasty retreat to the dorm for a second pair, then headed to class.
Draco pulled me in closer and hugged me tight, and proceeded to snore. He was asleep. I escaped and sat next to him. He looked so.. Peaceful. All signs of worry or stress were gone, and he smiled. Genuinely smiled. I had only seen him do that twice. He was beautiful. The way he slept, in a loose fetal position with both hands beneath his head, was positioned just perfect to slide into, and become wrapped in his warmth again.
My wand woke me up when it was time. I in turn woke up Draco. We talked for a bit and decided to go with whatever Ronald had told everyone about what had happened last night. He walked into the Great Hall first. I waited a couple minutes, then followed. All eyes were on me as I took my spot between Ginny and Harry. Ron sat on the other side of his sister. I tried my best to play the role of pathetic injured me, even glancing at Draco in fear every couple seconds.
I almost fell over in shock when Malfoy wrapped his arm around me and took a seat next to me and Ron, as Harry had left minutes before. He said something mean and smirked at me, and I knew he was trying to get me to fight a little. I said something real mean, and pushed him udown. He pulled himself back up by pushing Ronald down. Ron muttered a jinx beneath his breath, and made Malfoy's robes disappear. I could have punched Ron right there, although Draco did look pretty good with no robes on. Malfoy left quickly, and I scurried off to my first class, Arithmancy. I was gonna have to sit with Draco, so it might be fun. And I liked Arithmancy.
